Iron Flame Chapter 63
Andarna kills a dark wielder by breathing fire and ripping off his head. This is the first time Violet realizes she has this ability. Andarna’s scales have also turned black like Tairn’s, which surprises Violet.
When General Melgren orders Xaden and Violet to the Vale, they object. Leaving would expose Brennan and the wardstone, and Brennan is their best chance at surviving the battle.
Before Violet reaches leadership, Jesinia intercepts her with a troubling discovery. Warrick’s journal says six contributed to the wardstone’s creation, but Lyra’s journal says seven. Violet suspects what this means but shuts the thought down before anyone connected to her can sense it.
At the gate, leadership has decided to abandon the fortress and use the remaining cadets to slow the enemy while the Vale is prepared. Violet argues that if Brennan has mended the wardstone, she can raise the wards and wipe out every wyvern on the field. Her mother begins to listen.
Then the horde’s leader arrives, and Violet fears she already knows who it is. When Melgren tries to shut down the conversation, Xaden threatens to withdraw his forces entirely. He then walks out to the dragons to buy Violet time and reveals the horde has been waiting specifically for him.
Iron Flame Chapter 64
Violet and Xaden stand outside Basgiath facing an enormous venin army. Xaden tells Violet the venin leader is the one who escaped at Resson. Violet has only enough power to ward one location and forces Xaden to choose between Basgiath and Aretia. He chooses Basgiath without hesitation and tells Violet she’s where he belongs. Violet secures Codagh’s agreement to fire the wardstone, and she and Xaden share a brief, fierce kiss before she runs.
Inside, Brennan has barely managed to mend the stone. Violet confirms it can hold power and begins channeling Tairn’s magic into it. She calls Andarna down and confronts her about what she has pieced together. Andarna admits she’s not a black dragon but a seventh breed, one who waited centuries to hatch specifically for Violet.
Through Tairn’s eyes, Violet watches Xaden lose ground against the Sage. She keeps pouring power into the stone until her body gives out. Violet’s mother kicks her away from it to save her life.
General Sorrengail then turns to Sloane. She confesses to killing Sloane’s mother and to failing to prevent Liam’s death, using both admissions to secure Sloane’s cooperation. She laces her fingers with Sloane’s and gives her own life to power the wardstone. She dies in Brennan’s arms. The wards rise, and a black iron flame burns at the top of the stone where nothing burned before.
Iron Flame Chapter 65
The battle is over. Violet’s mother sacrificed herself, channeling her own life force and her dragon Aimsir’s power into the wardstone to restore Basgiath’s wards. Violet, along with her siblings Mira and Brennan, and Andarna make their way out of the tower in shock.
Outside, the victory celebrations are already in full swing. The wyvern dropped from the sky the moment the wards rose, the venin scattered, and leadership hunts the survivors down. Rhiannon finds Violet, pulls her into a hug, and confirms their squad mostly made it through.
Violet goes to find Xaden at the edge of the ravine. He tells her he killed the venin who had a hold over him, and Violet tells him about her mother. They share the weight of it together for a moment before turning to what comes next. General Melgren wants them to return to Basgiath, and Xaden agrees it makes sense since Basgiath’s wards are now intact while Aretia’s are weakening.
Then Xaden tells Violet she should be afraid of him. When Violet looks at him, she sees a faint red ring around his irises, the unmistakable mark of a venin.
Iron Flame Chapter 66
Xaden is suspended in the air, physically broken after being overpowered by the Sage. The general taunts him and demands he defect, warning that Violet will die if he refuses. Through their bond, Xaden senses Violet is about to sacrifice herself for him. Nearly out of power and running out of time, he finds an unknown energy source beneath him and uses it to hold the general in place.
Then Xaden snaps awake. It was a dream, and Violet sleeps beside him. She’s been crying, and he knows she’s grieving her mother. He tells Violet he loves her, slips out quietly, and makes his way down to the prison cells.
Xaden confronts Jack Barlowe and demands to know if there’s a cure for the power he tapped into. Jack tells him there’s no cure and never will be. Xaden insists he wants no part of what Jack has become, but Jack just laughs and tells him it’s already too late. Xaden has crossed the line, and as far as Violet is concerned, he’s the villain now.
