Iron Flame Chapter 19
Violet and her squad arrive at the flight field, where Major Varrish formally charges Violet with dereliction of duty over Andarna’s absence and orders her to fly to a punishment site. Tairn refuses outright and attacks Solas, pinning the orange dragon by the throat until Varrish admits he has no authority to summon dragons and apologizes to Violet publicly. Varrish and the bleeding Solas leave in defeat, but Violet senses she has just made a dangerous new enemy.
Three nights later, Rhiannon calls Violet out on her growing distance and the punishment she never mentioned. Violet finally breaks, pouring out her grief over Liam’s death and everything she endured beyond the walls. She nearly lets slip something far bigger when Tairn warns her that Varrish has been listening nearby the whole time.
Varrish emerges from the shadows with his guards and searches Violet’s bag, finding nothing. He leaves with a threat, and Violet tells Rhiannon things are far from okay.
Iron Flame Chapter 20
Violet lands at Samara after a flight spent bickering with Tairn about graduation requirements. In the courtyard, Xaden strides toward Violet and tells her she must ask him to kiss her if she wants time alone with him that night. She does. They kiss in front of everyone, and Mira arrives to break it off. Mira has just been stationed at Samara, and Xaden heads off to duty shortly after.
The sisters spar in the gym. Mira warns Violet that RSC’s interrogation phase gets cadets killed, then challenges Violet on her relationship with Xaden. Violet steers the conversation toward the wards, draws out an explanation of how they function, and suggests wyvern might be behind the destruction in Poromiel. Mira chalks it up to Violet not sleeping enough and drops the subject.
Late that night, Xaden gets into bed, and he and Violet talk without fighting for once. Violet admits she nearly told Mira everything and says she’s exhausted by how many secrets she’s carrying from everyone in her life. Xaden responds with unusual openness, telling Violet when he plans to hand off the weapons cache and revealing what the alloy is actually made of. He holds Violet as she falls asleep and whispers that she loves him.
Iron Flame Chapter 21
Violet, recovering from a shoulder injury, keeps her arm in a sling. In history class, Professor Devera announces that a recent graduate named Masen Sanborn died in an attack on the Eastern Wing. Violet immediately suspects foul play, since Masen was one of the riders who flew with her to Resson, and most of them have since died.
During combat challenges, Dain forces Violet onto the mat despite her injury. He pins her down and confesses that he reported the memory he stole from Violet to his father, which set off the chain of events that sent her toward Athebyne. He insists he never knew gryphons were waiting to ambush her. Before conceding, Dain claims it was Violet’s mother who inflicted the hundred and seven scars on Xaden’s back.
Afterward, Rhiannon pieces together that the riders who went to Athebyne are being killed off one by one. She urges Violet to reveal what really happened to Liam’s dragon. Violet refuses and begs Rhiannon to stop asking before she’s forced to lie.
When Violet walks Aaric to the infirmary after he breaks his wrist in a match, she realizes Aaric has already figured out the secret the marked ones are keeping. He tells Violet it was the unusual metal discs on his royal guards’ daggers that first raised his suspicions, and that he came to Basgiath on purpose once he started putting things together.
Iron Flame Chapter 22
Violet wakes from a nightmare in which a venin Sage confronts her in a field, tells Violet there’s no escaping him, and gives her a choice between joining him or dying.
On Saturday, Xaden takes Violet toward Basgiath’s forge, where the revolution acquires its weapons. Along the way, Violet shares what she’s figured out about the wardstone. The First Six who built the wards in Basgiath almost certainly built one in Aretia too, and Violet needs a written account from someone who was actually there.
Violet and Xaden never make it. Major Varrish and Professor Grady are waiting in the stairwell with Ridoc, Rhiannon, and Sawyer already bound and in custody. The squad is being taken for interrogation training. Xaden argues that Violet’s too injured, but Varrish threatens to cancel the following weekend’s leave if Xaden doesn’t stand down. That would mean two more weeks of separation between Tairn and Sgaeyl, which neither dragon can afford.
Behind Xaden’s back, Violet reaches out to Sgaeyl to urge him into relenting, aware that Xaden’s carrying enough contraband to be executed many times over if Varrish chooses to press it. Xaden stands down, furious. As Violet is led away, she slips him a quiet instruction about a page number she needs Jesinia to find in the Archives.
Iron Flame Chapter 23
Violet and her squad are brought to a secret interrogation facility hidden in the cliffside beneath the quadrant. Professor Grady unties their hands and gives them time to eat, using the window to explain the exercise and ask each of them to share a secret.
When it’s her turn, Violet tells the squad something real. Navarrian infantry has been killing Poromish civilians at the border. She also notices the drinks smell like the sedative used before the land navigation course and warns the others in time. They pour it out and agree to pretend they’ve lost their connection to their dragons.
Grady returns to inform the group, with some satisfaction, that the scenario has already started, then hands them over to two unfamiliar interrogators and leaves. Violet is shackled to a chair in the center of the room while the others are chained to the wall. The interrogators hit Violet repeatedly to pressure the squad into talking. When that fails, they turn to Ridoc. The squad holds through hours of beatings and waiting.
Near midnight, the interrogators offer water in exchange for a personal detail about a squadmate. Everyone refuses. Major Varrish walks in, impatient, and announces he has a better approach. He brings Dain into the room.
Iron Flame Chapter 24
As Dain walks in, Major Varrish orders him to use his signet on Violet to pull out her secret phrase and whatever she’s hiding. Varrish sweetens it by suggesting Dain could finally understand why Violet chose Xaden over him. Dain reaches for Violet’s face, then stops. He refuses to interrogate an already injured cadet and walks out. Varrish, visibly annoyed, punches Violet directly in her dislocated shoulder. She blacks out.
Violet wakes to find Nolon beside her. Nolon tells Violet that Varrish has ordered him to keep mending her injuries and returning her to the chair, and that the interrogation has been extended by a full day. He tells Violet she needs to get out, then lures Varrish away from the antechamber by suggesting his help is needed with another patient.
The moment Nolon and Varrish are gone, Rhiannon tells the group plainly that Varrish means to kill Violet. The squad agrees they have to escape. Sawyer melts the door hinges with his signet. They lower the door to the floor, retrieve their weapons from the antechamber desk, and move to the main exit. That lock proves harder, but one of Violet’s daggers grows warm near the handle. Violet brushes her thumb across the pommel and the lock clicks open. Nobody stops to work out how. They run.
Iron Flame Chapter 25
The squad escapes from a cave and runs into Professor Grady outside. Rhiannon demands their patch reward on the spot and gets it.
Back at the war college, the squad learns a second cadet has died in the interrogation assessment. At Battle Brief, every seat has a leaflet reporting that Zolya, a large Poromish city, was destroyed by blue fire dragons with ten thousand dead. Violet determines the leaflet was printed inside Basgiath without any official seal or approval, so it’s either a staged classroom exercise or smuggled news.
Colonel Markham dismisses the leaflet as propaganda and collects them all. He notes that Navarre has never sent a dragon formation made up entirely of blue dragons. Violet recognizes the move as a deliberate shutdown.
Then the real announcement comes. Markham reveals that Jack Barlowe, whom Violet killed during War Games, has been brought back by Nolon after months of mending. Jack walks in, scans the room, and finds Violet immediately. Her squad is convinced he’ll come after her again.
Iron Flame Chapter 26
The cadets absorb the shock of Jack’s return. Violet decides to keep a close eye on Jack rather than let fear take over, and she reminds herself that her signet and combat skills are stronger now than during War Games.
Professor Devera takes the floor with a second announcement. Samara was attacked the previous evening by three drifts, the closest consecutive outpost attack in recorded history. No riders died, but one was severely wounded. As Devera speaks, her hand drifts to scratch the left side of her neck, the same side where Xaden wears his rebellion relic.
Violet understands. She picks up her bag and walks out mid‑session, ignoring Colonel Markham shouting after her. Bodhi follows Violet into the hall and gives her his flight jacket, pointing out she would’ve flown without one. Violet takes it and goes.
Iron Flame Chapter 27
Violet lands at Samara, unable to separate her emotions from Tairn’s. His desperation to confirm Sgaeyl is safe has taken over her mind. Violet sees that the outpost is recovering from an attack. Mira, unharmed, points Violet to the sparring gym.
Xaden is there, completely fine and sparring with Garrick. Relief washes over Violet, then fury at herself for flying eight hours in a blind panic. Xaden ends the session and carries Violet into the bathing chamber, where cold water snaps her out of Tairn’s grip. Violet gets her shields up and takes back control.
Violet and Xaden argue. He fixates on Violet wearing Bodhi’s jacket, and she lays into him about everything she went through to get there. Xaden seems more touched than apologetic. Then he rolls up his sleeve to show a thick, raised scar from a wound that nearly cost him his arm. Violet’s anger drains away. Xaden tells her he would’ve done the same reckless thing if he’d heard she was hurt.
The tension between Violet and Xaden shifts, and they kiss and sleep together. Afterward, Violet asks what they should do next. Xaden offers three options: stay, move to his room, or fly to a rendezvous to drop off daggers. Violet grabs her clothes before he can finish the sentence.
