Iron Flame Chapter 55
Violet confronts Xaden about the deal he made with her mother. He admits he knew she’d figured it out months ago and had been waiting for her to raise it herself, which only makes her angrier. They argue over who’s responsible for the distance between them. Violet points to the secrets he’s been carrying. Xaden insists he would’ve answered any question she bothered to ask.
To drive his point about trust, Xaden turns Violet’s own armoire analogy against her. His shadows drag a dagger out and hold it inches from her face. She yanks it away, and he uses that moment to argue she already trusts him more than she admits.
Violet names what she’s actually been afraid of. She fears he kept her alive and fell for her because of her mother’s deal, not because of anything real between them. She ends the argument by asking about Xaden’s second signet. As a direct descendant of Sgaeyl’s previous bond, Xaden would’ve either developed a second power or gone mad, and he seems sane enough. It’s the first time Violet visibly shakes him.
Before Xaden can respond, Brennan pounds on the door with news that a wyvern horde is heading for the cliffs and Violet is needed to raise the wards.
Iron Flame Chapter 56
The group reaches the wardstone chamber before the wyvern horde arrives. Violet’s corrected translation proves to be the key. The stone requires a representative dragon from each den, and only dragonfire can trigger the runes. Six dragons breathe fire into the chamber, and the wardstone activates.
Violet and Xaden fly ahead to hold the line at the cliffs while the others stay back. As they wait, Xaden reveals what he’s been hiding. He can sense what people are about to do before they consciously form the thought, reading instinct and hidden motive rather than fully formed thoughts. This ability is a death sentence among riders, which is why he’s told no one. Violet is shaken but assures him her love isn’t fickle, and they brace for the fight.
The horde arrives, led by the Sage and a large number of dark wielders. Three wyvern cross the ward barrier and die instantly. The Sage pulls the rest back, and Violet attempts to strike him with lightning but misses.
Back at Riorson House, Mira delivers news that General Melgren has summoned Violet, Mira, and no more than two marked ones to a meeting the next day. Before anyone can process it, Syrena demonstrates she can still wield despite the active wards, which suggests something isn’t working as intended.
Iron Flame Chapter 57
Violet and her riot arrive at Athebyne an hour ahead of schedule and hide four dragons in the surrounding forest to disguise their numbers. Before the Navarrian delegation arrives, Violet pulls Xaden aside and asks if he ever used his signet to spy on her intentions. He admits he did early on but stopped once his feelings for her changed.
The Navarrian group arrives led by General Melgren, with Violet’s mother among them. Melgren is direct and says he’s had a vision of a battle at Samara on the solstice, knowing Navarre loses. He wants the Aretian riders to fight alongside them, and in exchange, he offers to acknowledge their independence and leave Aretia alone. Ulices refuses outright, Brennan formally rejects the offer on behalf of the Assembly, and Xaden backs the refusal. The meeting falls apart.
Violet’s mother lingers after the others leave. She gives Violet a journal written in Morainian, warns her that the wards protecting Aretia are weakening and will eventually fail, and tells her to uncover what Warrick hid in his original research.
On the flight home, Violet and Mira stop to examine a wyvern carcass near their border and find a rune-carved stone inside that’s still giving off energy. A second wyvern revives, and Violet kills it with lightning. They leave convinced someone has given the venin access to runic power and that everything depends on uncovering what Warrick concealed.
Iron Flame Chapter 58
Violet meets Xaden in the sparring gym, and they work through the fallout from his latest revelation. They agree to keep no more secrets and to be fully honest even when it’s difficult. Violet asks about Xaden’s mother, and he tells her she left when he was ten after fulfilling a marriage contract that only required her to stay until an heir survived to that age. He also confirms that Sgaeyl is the only one who’s ever known about his signet, kept hidden since it first appeared alongside his shadows. Violet and Xaden reconcile.
Two days before the solstice, Battle Brief shows enemy forces massed along the Navarrian border near Samara. As the class talks through how the wards function, Violet realizes General Melgren was bluffing at Athebyne. Losing Samara would be damaging but wouldn’t bring down the whole system. What unsettles Violet more is that the enemy hasn’t moved in three days.
Violet finds Xaden and lays out her theory. Samara is a distraction. The enemy is waiting for all border outposts to fall at the same time, and the real target is Basgiath and the Vale. Because marked ones disrupt Melgren’s foresight, he can’t see that attack coming.
Xaden asks Violet if she wants to go back and fight. Violet tells him that doing nothing would make them no different from the people who left others to suffer behind their wards. She says they have to go.
Iron Flame Chapter 59
Violet persuades Andarna to wear a harness so Tairn can carry her to Basgiath. Before they leave, Maren gives Violet a small crossbow with magically rigged explosive arrowheads as a backup weapon.
The Assembly refuses to send help, convinced the real threat is at Samara. Brennan shares their doubts and argues against the mission, but Violet cuts him off. The group launches without him, leaving the first-years behind.
The riders reach Basgiath without encountering a single patrol, since nearly every soldier has been dispatched to Samara. General Sorrengail meets them in the courtyard, hostile at first, but Violet and Mira point out the campus is almost completely undefended and persuade their mother to let them check on the wards.
The general leads them through a hidden tunnel beneath the administration building. In the ward chamber, two guards lie dead on the floor. Jack Barlowe and his dragon Baide are inside, with Baide setting the wardstone ablaze with a strange black fire. Baide attacks and slams the general against the wall, knocking her unconscious. Ridoc raises a wall of ice to shield the group from Baide’s torrent of fire, though the effort leaves his hands badly burned.
Then Jack does something no one expects. He draws his sword and drives it through Baide’s throat. Her blood extinguishes the fire, the wardstone cracks apart, and the wards collapse.
Iron Flame Chapter 60
The wardstone is destroyed, leaving Navarre without magical defense. Jack Barlowe is revealed as a venin who killed his own dragon to break free from the wards. Xaden pins him with shadows and demands information. Jack admits venin can draw enough power from the earth to sustain themselves inside warded territory and that he scattered lures across the college to guide an approaching horde. An attack is coming within hours.
Dain reads Jack’s memories, but Jack seizes him mid-vision and begins draining him. Xaden knocks Jack unconscious, and Nolon uses a serum to sever him from his power.
At the Battle Brief, leadership confirms a thousand wyvern are on their way. Riders are split into squads and assigned specific airspace sectors. Violet insists on defending the wardstone chamber, but her mother refuses.
Then Brennan arrives with fliers from Aretia. Violet asks if he can mend a wardstone, and Rhiannon formally requests that their squad guard the airspace above the chamber. General Sorrengail agrees.
Iron Flame Chapter 61
Before dawn, Violet and her squad take position on a ridgeline above Basgiath while General Sorrengail waits at the gates below. Andarna arrives and refuses to leave despite Violet’s protests.
The wyvern horde appears, far larger than anyone anticipated. General Sorrengail summons a storm, and Violet uses it to wipe out the first wave with a massive lightning strike. The wyvern adjust quickly and drop below the cloud cover to avoid further strikes.
Fighting spreads across every sector. Violet positions herself above the battle on Tairn, using precise strikes to relieve overwhelmed squads. Xaden works in parallel, dragging wyvern out of the fight with his shadow power. Rhiannon collects a broken dagger mid‑flight and gets it back to Ridoc before the next wave hits.
A second, larger wave comes straight for Violet and Tairn, led by three venin riders. When the groups collide, one venin jumps onto Tairn’s neck and walks toward Violet. She throws a dagger at him, and he catches it. Violet’s saddle buckle is jammed, and she can’t free herself. Just as he closes in, Rhiannon jumps from her own dragon onto Tairn and puts herself between Violet and the venin.
Iron Flame Chapter 62
Rhiannon takes on the venin rider on Tairn’s back while Violet steadies her and passes her a dagger. Violet shoots the rider through the chest with her crossbow and brings him down.
Above, Tairn spots Aotrom, Ridoc’s dragon, under attack from a wyvern with three more closing in. Sawyer and Sliseag arrive to help, but a wyvern douses Sliseag with green fire. When the wyvern lunges again, Sawyer throws himself in the way to protect his dragon and loses most of his lower leg to the bite.
Violet cuts herself free, leaps onto Aotrom’s back, and charges across the attacking wyvern’s head to reach Sawyer before he loses his grip. She grabs him, and the two of them fall from Sliseag into open air. Tairn catches them and carries them down to a field near Basgiath.
On the ground, Violet improvises a tourniquet on Sawyer’s leg and screams for help. Maren arrives with a litter and takes him to the healers.
Tairn warns Violet just in time. She turns to find a venin named Wynn, who claims she has orders to deliver Violet alive to someone powerful. Cat arrives to help, and Violet kills Wynn with a lightning strike. A second dark wielder appears, destroys Violet’s conduit, and lifts her off the ground with his power, leaving her unable to move or wield.
Suddenly, a massive creature with black scales and golden eyes springs forward from its hiding place against the cliff face.
