Iron Flame Chapter 37
Violet wakes from a nightmare about the Sage but feels no pain for the first time in days. She and Xaden make love, then head downstairs and find the house packed with cadets who don’t know what comes next.
On the way to the Assembly, Violet and Xaden stop to reassure Aaric that his identity is safe. When they enter the meeting room, Brennan, Garrick, and Imogen are already inside facing Assembly members furious that Xaden brought a hundred cadets to Aretia without approval. Xaden accepts full responsibility, and the argument turns to what the Assembly should do now, since Aretia stands undefended and underprepared.
Violet mentions Warrick’s journal and catches the Assembly off guard. Xaden explains that it holds instructions for the wardstone but requires translation from Old Lucerish. Ulices demands that Violet be confined and questioned. Brennan shuts him down, and Xaden goes further by revealing a scar that marks him as personally responsible for Violet, just as he once vouched for the marked ones.
At that moment, Violet learns that Xaden holds the seventh seat on the Assembly. He tells the members that accepting him means accepting her. They back down. Xaden suggests the cadets return to classes and the scribes be given the benefit of the doubt.
Andarna’s voice enters Violet’s mind for the first time in months, and Violet feels whole again.
Iron Flame Chapter 38
Violet finally sees Andarna, who has just woken from a months-long coma. Their reunion ends abruptly when Andarna’s left wing won’t fully extend. Tairn explains that her unnatural growth during the battle at Resson and her unusually long Dreamless Sleep left her without a second set of wing muscles. The elders believe she can learn to fly by strengthening the muscles she has, but she’ll never carry a rider
Three days later, the cadets attend their first Battle Brief in Aretia. Brennan and Professor Devera update them on the war. The public in Navarre still doesn’t know the cadets defected, and no families have been targeted yet. The briefing also covers a recent attack on the outpost at Samara, where a drift of gryphon fliers raided in search of weapons. Violet blames herself, because with the cadets gone, the fliers lost their allies and have grown desperate enough to raid directly.
The briefing breaks off when Tairn warns that a large group of dragons is approaching. Everyone assumes they’re from Navarre. Violet bolts outside to intercept them. Tairn seizes Teine by the throat, and Mira dismounts to say they came in peace. Their mother had revealed the truth to the riders at Samara and given them an hour to choose. About half decided to leave.
Mira spots Brennan on the steps of Riorson House. She had believed he was dead for six years. She walks up and punches him in the face.
Iron Flame Chapter 39
Brennan ends up with a broken nose courtesy of Mira. Violet scrambles to get him ice before things spiral further. He pauses long enough to order Ulices to deploy riders and determine whether the desertions are isolated or coordinated, then turns to deal with the new arrivals who came in with Xaden’s blessing.
The sibling reunion between Mira and Brennan erupts into a full-blown argument over Brennan’s years of faking his death and the damage it caused their father, who died never knowing the truth. Violet cuts them off and makes Brennan take the ice.
Then Xaden arrives. He and Violet share a brief, tender moment before she refocuses the group. She tells them she knows how to raise the wards and needs blood from the six most powerful riders in Aretia.
The group heads to a hidden chamber in the mountain where the wardstone rests. Violet reads the ritual from Warrick’s journal. The six riders are Xaden, Felix, Suri, Bodhi, Brennan, and Violet herself. They each draw blood from their palms and press their hands against the stone.
Nothing happens. The ritual fails, and Violet is gutted.
Felix promises to begin Violet’s signet training the next day. Unwilling to leave her friends unprotected because of a plan she set in motion, Violet decides she must go to Tecarus herself and retrieve the luminary. Xaden flatly refuses. She walks out anyway and goes to find Mira.
Iron Flame Chapter 40
Violet trains with Felix, and it quickly becomes clear she has no real aim or control with her lightning. She learned to strike hard and often but never precisely, and Felix makes clear that Professor Carr’s approach left her dangerously underprepared. He gives her a glass orb called a conduit, crafted specifically for her to help draw off and regulate her power. She has a week to practice with it, and if she doesn’t show results, he won’t teach her again.
The next day, Violet sets her own plan in motion. Without telling Xaden, she leaves for Cordyn with Mira and Brennan, hoping to trade a demonstration of her wielding for a luminary from Viscount Tecarus. They arrive at his sprawling coastal palace and face gryphon fliers who demand an honest statement from each of them before allowing entry. Mira’s statement is a blunt warning that she’ll harm anyone who touches Violet, which the fliers actually respect.
The gryphons move aside, and Xaden stands behind them. He looks furious.
Iron Flame Chapter 41
Violet, Xaden, Mira, and Brennan arrive at Viscount Tecarus’s palace in Poromish territory. Xaden is furious that Brennan brought Violet there, warning her privately that the palace is full of fliers who see her as an enemy. Tecarus ignores the tension and insists on dinner before any business is discussed.
While Violet gets ready, she learns that Cat, Tecarus’s niece, has a deeper history with Xaden. Cat needles Violet about her appearance and her relationship with him.
On the walk to the dining room, Violet grows increasingly insecure and emotional without knowing why. Later, Xaden tells her that Cat’s signet intensifies the feelings of those around her and that she’s been using it on Violet all evening. He apologizes for his overbearing behavior and admits he should’ve brought Violet sooner. Violet tells him she’s sorry for keeping her plans from him, but not for going.
Tecarus then lays out his terms. If Violet can strike a large iron chest on the arena field with lightning, he’ll discuss handing over the luminary. Xaden is barred from the arena, but Violet accepts without hesitation and heads down with Mira. When the guards unlock the chest, a man collapses out of it, his eyes veined red with the mark of a venin.
Xaden screams Violet’s name.
Iron Flame Chapter 42
The chest opens and the venin attacks instantly. Mira throws a dagger while Violet strikes with lightning but can’t land a clean hit. The venin kills a guard and threatens to bring Violet back to its Sage. Xaden throws alloy‑hilted daggers onto the field, and Violet manages to wound the venin, but it retaliates by hurling the iron chest and pinning Violet’s dress to the ground. Brennan runs onto the field to help.
The venin then drains the magic from the entire arena. Mira nearly collapses trying to shield them but holds on long enough to keep all three alive. Violet sends Brennan and Mira to the steps, pins the venin’s feet to the flooded ground with both daggers, and waits for Tairn. When Tairn arrives, Violet releases a massive lightning strike into the water and kills the venin.
Back on the terrace, Violet finds Xaden strangling Viscount Tecarus with shadows. Violet talks Xaden down. Tecarus reveals the arena stone came from land east of the Dunness River already drained of magic, confirming he holds more than one venin. Xaden releases Tecarus and forces an apology to Violet before announcing they’ll negotiate.
At the table, Tecarus offers Violet a peaceful life on a remote isle in exchange for monitoring riderless wyvern. Violet refuses. Tecarus then clarifies he never promised to hand over the luminary, only to open discussions. Brennan counters with weapons, and Tecarus agrees on the condition that they must take a hundred gryphon flier cadets to Aretia and train them alongside the dragon riders. Brennan accepts before Violet can object.
Iron Flame Chapter 43
Four days after the deal with Tecarus, cadets and gryphon fliers assemble at the base of the Cliffs of Dralor. Brennan explains that the gryphons must climb the narrow, treacherous Medaro Pass. At the same time, riders walk alongside them, the logic being that surviving genuine danger together will build more trust than any formal arrangement.
The climb proves grueling. Violet is paired with Maren, Cat’s best friend, and the two cautiously warm up to each other on the ascent. A triggered boulder trap nearly kills them before Tairn destroys it with his tail.
Higher up, the group halts at a pressure trigger that fires arrows across a gap too wide for altitude‑sick fliers to clear. Dain is already there, warning each group as they arrive. He and Ridoc hammer a sword into the cliff face as a handhold so everyone can swing across.
Violet goes first and makes it. Luella, suffering badly from altitude sickness, builds enough momentum but panics on landing and dives at Violet, driving them both toward the edge. Ridoc grabs Violet, but Visia and Luella go over the side. Violet catches one in each hand and dislocates her shoulder. Cibbe, Luella’s gryphon, reaches for Luella but grabs Visia instead and pulls her back onto the ledge.
Then, Violet looks back and finds Ridoc against the wall with two arrows in his side and blood at his mouth. She screams for Brennan.
Iron Flame Chapter 44
Luella slips from Violet’s grip and falls into the clouds. Cibbe begins dying with Luella. Cat blames Violet and nearly turns violent before Maren and Dain intervene. Cat withdraws to grieve at Cibbe’s side.
With no healers available and Ridoc bleeding from two arrows, Violet asks Dain to reset her dislocated shoulder so Brennan can focus entirely on Ridoc. Dain does it and fashions a sling from his belt.
Before Brennan can finish, wyvern attack through the cloud cover. Violet mounts Tairn and has Cianna push the clouds away from the trail to protect those still on it. She and Tairn then fly into the mist as bait, drawing the wyvern up and out of cover. Once they follow, Violet forces lightning into the clouds, gambling it will be pulled toward the dark magic inside the wyvern. The gamble works, and all four are killed.
At the top of the cliff, Violet finds Ridoc alive. Dain points out that venin share a collective consciousness with their wyvern, which means whoever sent them already knows the group’s location and what Violet can do. Violet says aloud what everyone is thinking. The venin will come for them.
