Iron Flame Chapter 45
Morning formation brings bad news. A freshly promoted Major Devera reads out the names of two riders killed in action, one of them the brother of a cadet in the ranks. Violet finds the ritual harsher than Basgiath’s usual hardships. Announcing a family member’s death before everyone feels like a cruelty of its own.
Bodhi passes word that Professor Trissa has chosen Rhiannon’s squad and Cat’s drift for a special class.
The two groups meet the next day in the valley, dragons and gryphons standing behind their riders and fliers in uneasy proximity. Rhiannon arrives just in time, her family newly settled in Aretia as refugees.
Trissa wastes no time. She introduces rune tempering, an old Tyrrish practice Navarre banned because it gave fliers a way to compete with riders on magical terms. Power drawn from oneself can be shaped into geometric patterns and pressed into an object to activate later without a wielder present. Trissa demonstrates with a heating rune burned into a wooden board, and the results speak for themselves.
The students spend the afternoon fumbling through their first attempts. Sawyer takes the worst of it, blasted off his feet after pulling too hard. By sunset, most manage a basic unlocking rune. Violet gets there, though Cat beats her to it.
Iron Flame Chapter 46
While working on a rune assignment in Xaden’s room, Violet realizes he built an unlocking rune into her dagger all along. Xaden explains it activated only when she truly needed it, which is how they escaped the interrogation chamber.
Violet asks about the small stone by Xaden’s bed. Xaden explains it’s a protection rune, one of 107 made by Colonel Mairi before the Battle of Aretia and given to the children of officers slated for execution. Each rune was designed to shield its bearer from the specific signet used to kill their parent. When the executions happened, the runes activated, and that moment became the origin of the rebellion relics the marked ones carry. Violet considers confronting Xaden about his deal with her mother but holds back, too afraid of what the answer might cost them.
The following week, rider squads are permanently merged with flier drifts. Before the merger, cadets get a six-hour window to settle personal grudges through supervised sparring matches. Members of Cat’s drift begin targeting Violet’s squad, going after Rhiannon and Imogen before Cat challenges Violet herself. Midway through the fight, Violet realizes Cat moves exactly like Xaden. He trained them both.
Iron Flame Chapter 47
The fight continues. Cat uses taunts about her history with Xaden to get inside Violet’s head, and it works. Violet loses her footing, and Cat pins her face‑down with her arm wrenched behind her back. From there, Cat reveals that she and Xaden were engaged and that the alliance between their families was meant to secure her a crown. She wasn’t fighting over his affections but over her future.
Violet headbutts free using moves Rhiannon taught her, gains the upper hand, and ends up on top of Cat with both hands around her throat. Cat refuses to tap out. Violet realizes Cat has been using mindwork to flood her with rage and jealousy throughout the fight, and the amplified emotion is so overwhelming Violet can’t make herself let go. Xaden arrives and talks her down enough to release Cat and ask for help.
Cat refuses to concede even after nearly being choked unconscious. The emotional overload triggers an involuntary lightning strike from Violet that sets the bleachers on fire. Xaden smothers the flames with shadows and carries her out.
Xaden takes Violet to the Assembly chamber, clears the room, and sets her down. When Violet asks how much of the fight he heard, Xaden tells her all of it.
Iron Flame Chapter 48
Xaden makes it clear through actions rather than words that Violet isn’t a placeholder. The two become intimate on Tyrrendor’s throne.
Afterward, Xaden explains that he and Cat were betrothed as part of a political alliance and that he ended it when Viscount Tecarus made clear he never intended to hand over the luminary. When Xaden asks Violet to say why she felt inferior on the mat, she describes feeling unmoored since Resson, unable to control her power, failing at the wards, and making poor decisions while lives hang in the balance.
Xaden tells Violet that Cat can only amplify emotions already present, so the jealousy and insecurity on the mat were genuinely Violet’s own. He says she needs to find her center, and only she can do it.
Then, Xaden reveals that the daggers he gave Violet are runed to protect her from Cat’s gift, which is why Cat got through to her in the gym and again in Cordyn. Violet had taken them off both times. He admits he had the daggers made after ending the betrothal, knowing Cat would eventually use her gift against Violet.
Violet and Xaden part ways with plans to meet that night.
Iron Flame Chapter 49
The morning after the challenges, rider squads officially absorb the flier drifts. Violet hands Cat her Iron Squad patch and keeps her composure. For the first time, Cat’s mindwork has no effect because Violet is wearing the runed daggers. Cat tries to needle her anyway, and Violet just walks away.
Violet heads to the library with Rhiannon, Ridoc, and Sawyer, where books sent by Viscount Tecarus in Krovlish await her. Dain arrives at seven‑thirty. Violet invited him to help translate Warrick’s journal.
The next day, Violet and Dain work in the wardstone chamber and have their first honest conversation in a long time. Dain admits he first accessed Violet’s memories by accident and continued deliberately when he needed information he couldn’t ask for directly. He also admits he trusted his father’s read on Xaden over Violet’s judgment, and the cost was Liam’s life. Violet tells Dain she can’t look at him and think of Liam at the same time without breaking, and she asks him not to bring it up until she has more distance.
During the conversation, Violet notices the wardstone warming under her hand and realizes Dain has been imbuing it. He estimates it could take weeks to fully charge. Violet agrees to work on it together and says she’ll ask Xaden to help. Before she leaves, Dain asks if she truly loves Xaden. Violet says yes, and Dain tells her he’ll trust Xaden as much as she does.
Iron Flame Chapter 50
At a training session with Felix, Violet learns to sustain a controlled stream of power without an anchor object. She loses control at the end and singes the mountainside, but Felix confirms she’s capable of precision and sets a goal of fifteen feet by Monday. He also tells her to let Xaden know they’re both needed in the Assembly chamber at five.
Through their bond, Violet senses Xaden has returned early, his mood heavy with weariness and something darker.
Back at Riorson House, Violet finds Garrick, Bodhi, and a badly injured Heaton on the landing. Venin have taken the town of Pavis, only an hour’s flight east of Draithus, using seven venin and a horde of wyvern. The town was overrun before riders could respond. Mira is alive but escorting an injured Emery to the healers. Nyra Voldaren, the quadrant’s senior wingleader, was killed along with her dragon, both completely drained like Soleil and Fuil at Resson.
All first and second lieutenants have been recalled to Aretia, and leadership is expected to restructure the wings. Bodhi says quietly that Pavis is a staging point for an attack on Draithus. They’re coming for the valley.
Iron Flame Chapter 51
Violet finds Xaden on the roof and brings him chocolate cake. He describes the day’s attack on civilians, massive in scale and unlike anything they had faced before. He nearly died when a second enemy emerged behind Sgaeyl.
Mira called for retreat because Xaden was there, and she refused to put Violet at risk. Xaden admits he understands it, even through the anger, because it mirrors how the marked ones have always treated Violet. He apologizes, and he and Violet acknowledge how tethered they are to each other.
Weeks pass. Violet and Dain work through the journal almost to the end but cannot crack the passage on the wards. One night after Dain goes to bed, Violet realizes she has been translating a key word incorrectly. Where she wrote “blood,” the right word is “breath,” and once that clicks, so does something else. The six powerful riders the journal kept referencing aren’t riders at all. They’re dragons.
Violet rules out telling Dain, certain he would default to the rules over the harder ethical questions, and goes straight to Rhiannon. She tells Rhiannon she knows how to raise the wards but isn’t sure they should.
Iron Flame Chapter 52
The squad gathers at Raegan’s house, where Rhiannon reveals that Violet cracked Warrick’s journal and believes she knows how to restore the wards in Aretia. The catch is that doing so would permanently cut the fliers off from channeling. Cat is furious, but Bragen steps in before things escalate. Violet promises not to act unilaterally, delays the conversation with Xaden, and reveals imbued Maorsite conduits that would give the fliers some power even after the wards go up.
That night, Violet is tormented by a recurring nightmare in which the Sage tells her she’ll eventually tear down the wards herself, not for power or greed, but for love.
Several days later, the squad prepares for a training flight when Xaden arrives back with a full riot. Garrick lets slip that Xaden fought a venin near Draithus, which rattles Violet, but she has no time to ask for details. Before heading out, she tells Xaden she’s worked out how to raise the wards and that the clue about the six most powerful pointed to dragons, not riders. She tells him to wait for her before doing anything about it.
Iron Flame Chapter 53
Violet, Cat, Sloane, and Visia hike down a snowy ridgeline with their bonded creatures to retrieve a mission objective from a cave in their assigned sector. Inside, none of them can produce a usable flame. Cat has a torch but lost her fire rune, so Violet channels power through her conduit to light it.
The group finds a metal chest deeper in the cave, and Cat handles the runic lock quickly. Andarna catches the scent of other dragons nearby, so they move fast to get out.
Near the entrance, a full-grown, one-eyed orange dragon rounds the corner and blocks their path. It swats Visia hard against the cave wall. Violet pulls Cat out of the dragon’s reach, and they both fall. The dragon turns on Violet and begins charging fire. Violet tells Tairn that Solas has found them.
Iron Flame Chapter 54
Andarna shields Violet, Cat, and Sloane from Solas’s fire blast, but the tight space prevents Violet from wielding her power safely. Cat fires arrows into Solas’s wounds from outside. When he recoils, Violet charges in, jams a broken conduit between his scales, and pushes lightning through it. Before she can finish him off, his tail connects and sends her flying.
Sloane pulls Violet toward the exit. Violet realizes Sloane has been involuntarily draining her power. Sloane panics that she might be turning venin, but Violet reassures her that a siphon signet is manifesting instead. Andarna kills Solas with her poisoned tail barb.
Back in Violet and Xaden’s room, a healer clears Violet of a concussion. Xaden storms in, furious that she threw herself in front of Cat. Violet explains that Cat’s death in Tyrrendor would have meant Xaden’s execution. The argument goes unresolved, and Xaden asks if she’s finally ready to hear the truth about the deal he made with her mother.
