Iron Flame Chapter 10
Violet kills the first-year assassin after a brutal fight, suffering a concussion and heavy bruising around her throat. She refuses to leave the rest of the assessment session and quietly tells Imogen she believes Aetos sent him.
That night, Xaden turns up at Violet’s room. He confirms Colonel Aetos was behind the attack, helps her clean up, and brings her soup. They talk about Samara, where his last name causes more trouble than his rebellion relic. They circle back to Liam’s death, each trying to take the blame and neither willing to accept the other’s version.
Before leaving to meet Bodhi, Xaden tells Violet to pay close attention to what happens when she visits Samara in seven days, then presses a folded piece of paper into her hand. He explains that his room there is warded so she can get in when she arrives. After he leaves, she opens it and finds that he has written her a letter.
Iron Flame Chapter 11
Violet and Imogen find Jesinia waiting in an alcove after their morning run. Jesinia drops off a book Violet requested and asks for help translating a few sentences from a dead language. While they talk, older riders and a professor haul away a second-year rider. Jesinia suspects she triggered it by logging his book request, as required by regulations.
Later, Rhiannon hands out mail at the flight field. Violet hopes for a letter from Xaden but receives one from her sister Mira instead, with several paragraphs blacked out by a censor. She tells Rhiannon she and Xaden are no longer together because he kept the truth from her.
During flight training, Major Varrish confronts Violet about Andarna, her rare feathertail dragon, who’s been absent from formations. He orders Andarna to appear the following week and mentions Violet’s father’s research into feathertails, a comment that makes Violet ask Tairn if it’s a coincidence.
A few nights later, Bodhi walks Violet to the flight field and asks her to relay a message to Xaden. Along the way, he lets slip the name Catriona, someone from Xaden’s past. Varrish shows up with two lieutenants and searches Violet’s bag but finds nothing.
Bodhi then admits the search was a planned test and reveals that Imogen and Eya were also attacked that day. Violet confronts him about being used without her knowledge. She mounts Tairn and finds the contraband already secured in packs on his saddle. They fly toward the front lines.
Iron Flame Chapter 12
Arriving at the Samara outpost, Violet learns from Tairn that a hostile drift of dragons has taken position across the border. She then tracks Xaden to a pit fight beneath the fortress, where riders compete for a single leave pass. Xaden wins his bout against a rider named Jarrett, and since Violet can only stay a day, he takes 24 hours of the pass and leaves the rest to Jarrett.
Alone together, Violet and Xaden kiss, but Xaden pulls back. He tells her he won’t use sex to win her back and that what he wants is her trust and her love.
Later, Violet asks about the smuggled weapons. Xaden explains that the daggers contain a metal alloy capable of holding power, which makes them able to kill venin. The same alloy reinforces the border wards, and outposts are positioned to prevent weak points from forming along their reach. The alloy must be regularly imbued with a rider’s power to stay effective, and Aretia needs both a forge and a luminary to produce more of it.
Violet asks more questions, but Xaden tells her the answers are classified. They work on Violet’s mental shields instead.
Iron Flame Chapter 13
Violet returns to Basgiath and is immediately redirected to the mountain training peak, where Major Varrish and Professor Carr are waiting. As punishment for Andarna missing formation, Varrish forces Violet to call lightning strike after strike until her body begins to fail. Carr warns that pushing further risks killing her, but Varrish ignores him. Around strike forty, Violet’s muscles cramp mid-strike, and she loses control, unable to cut off the power. The strike tears a section off the nearby ridgeline before she shuts it down mentally and collapses.
Tairn carries Violet to the river to bring her temperature down, where Imogen, Bodhi, and Eya meet them on the bank. It’s clear that if Andarna misses the next formation, the punishment will be worse.
Later, Violet and Imogen watch Sloane take a brutal beating during a gym sparring session. Violet learns that the rider she and Jesinia saw hauled away earlier turned up dead, and she believes Colonel Markham had him killed for requesting a forbidden book. She also learns that Sloane has a challenge fight on Monday against someone she can’t beat, and decides she won’t let that stand.
When Ridoc suddenly touches Violet from behind, she nearly slits his throat. It’s a sign of how dangerously on edge she’s become. On the way to physics class, someone throws a bag over Violet’s head, and she loses consciousness.
Iron Flame Chapter 14
Violet wakes up in a forest with Rhiannon, Sawyer, and Ridoc, alongside riders from Second Wing, infantry cadets, two healers, and a field scribe named Aoife. They’ve been drugged and dropped into a joint RSC exercise. The drug has severed their dragon connections and suppressed their signets.
Professor Grady explains the mission: reach the extraction point marked on their maps before the following afternoon while avoiding the opposing team’s dragons hunting them through the forest.
Tension flares quickly between the riders and an infantry cadet named Calvin, who argues with Rhiannon over navigation. After hours of hiking, Brisa realizes the two groups received different maps, which explains why their progress keeps stalling.
Before the group can act on that discovery, they crest a hill and come face to face with Baide, the orange dragon whose rider Violet killed the year before. With her connection to Tairn blocked, Violet has nothing to fall back on, and Baide clearly recognizes her. The riders move to the front to shield the infantry. An infantry cadet named Gwen panics and runs. Squad leader Tomas drags her back and shoves her clear just before Baide fires. The blast kills Tomas.
Baide then launches over the group and disappears into the forest. Rhiannon turns to the shaken infantry and tells them that’s why you shouldn’t run.
Iron Flame Chapter 15
The group fails the land navigation exercise because they never stop to compare their mismatched maps. They spend another night lost in the woods, exhausted and going nowhere.
During watch, Rhiannon confronts Violet directly. Rhiannon has noticed Violet pulling away from the squad, avoiding meals, dodging any conversation about Xaden, War Games, or Andarna’s absence, and spending her free time alone. She doesn’t demand answers but makes clear she knows something is wrong and asks Violet not to pretend otherwise. Violet has nothing to say and doesn’t sleep that night.
The next morning, the professors arrive to extract the group. Professor Grady tells them they were in the Hadden Woods the whole time and that their failure came down to an inability to work together. His disappointment, voiced while Tomas lies dead, lands heavily. He confirms they will repeat the exercise with supplies next time.
After drinking from the waterskins Grady hands out, the bonds and signets are restored. The riders are unsettled by how easily their connections were stripped and returned. Sawyer voices what everyone is thinking. If leadership can suppress their bonds at will, that’s a serious problem. Rhiannon takes it as further evidence something is off at Basgiath this year. Violet deflects but privately knows keeping secrets is already straining their friendship.
Violet then learns Tairn only managed a brief window with Sgaeyl. Xaden is already gone, and Violet’s left with the feeling something is wrong.
Iron Flame Chapter 16
Violet visits the Archives and pulls Jesinia aside. Violet learns that Jacek was killed for repeatedly requesting records of a border attack that doesn’t exist in the Archives. Jesinia also admits she never logged Violet’s requests the previous year. She suspected the Archives were incomplete, possibly by design. Violet asks Jesinia to find the oldest available texts on how the First Six built the wards, and Jesinia agrees in exchange for something in return.
At the Monday challenge matches, Violet slips a powder into the pastries on Dasha’s squad table that morning, then releases a second powder mid-fight. That combination of Ardyce powder and lillybelle briefly disorients Dasha and gives Sloane just enough of a window to force a yield. Afterward, Violet tells Sloane exactly what she did and why. When Sloane resists, Violet reveals she has fifty letters Liam wrote before he died and offers one per week in exchange for Sloane training with Imogen.
Over the following days, Jesinia brings two classified texts on the First Six and the origins of the wards, but neither contains what Violet needs.
Soon after, Major Varrish personally escorts Violet to the flight field, making clear he’s watching her and that Andarna’s continued absence has been noted. When Violet arrives at Samara, she finds Xaden locked in the operations center on twenty‑four‑hour duty, with no clearance to reach him.
Iron Flame Chapter 17
On the way to Battle Brief, Imogen pulls Violet aside and urges her to talk about Xaden and her habit of shutting her friends out. Violet explains that Xaden told her to keep her distance, and she suspects leadership is deliberately keeping them apart as punishment for failing to produce Andarna.
At the briefing, Rhiannon shows Violet a notice her parents sent from their village, warning villagers not to take in strangers because of unspecified border threats. Professor Markham takes the paper and uses it as a lesson on propaganda. He tells the class that Poromish civilians have been spreading false claims about their cities being destroyed by dragons, and reconnaissance missions have already proven otherwise. Violet knows he’s lying and spends the rest of the lesson struggling to keep her powers under control.
Violet loses that fight outside. She fires a lightning strike into the courtyard, brushes off Rhiannon, and runs to the Archives.
Inside, Violet runs into Jesinia. She returns a borrowed book and tells Jesinia she needs answers faster because people are going to die. Jesinia challenges Violet on keeping her squadmates in the dark, then agrees to bring her a new set of books and arranges to meet her on the bridge that evening.
Iron Flame Chapter 18
Xaden arrives earlier than expected and finds Violet on her bedroom floor surrounded by history books. He deduces that she’s been researching ward origins to help Aretia, and Violet admits Brennan told her about the wardstone. Xaden is angry that she risked her safety and went behind his back.
Their fight is interrupted when Rhiannon, Ridoc, and Sawyer knock on the door to invite Violet out. Xaden is cold toward them, and Violet calls him out on it. Her friends leave, and Violet lets Xaden tag along when she returns the borrowed books, mostly because she knows he won’t drop it.
In the tunnels, Violet and Xaden pass Nolon, who looks alarmingly gaunt and worn down.
In the Archives, Jesinia swaps out Violet’s books and hints she knows more than she’s letting on. She notes that a copy of The Fables of the Barren is missing from the collection when it should be there.
On the way back, the argument between Violet and Xaden reignites over trust and who’s keeping what from whom. Xaden walks away to find Bodhi rather than say something he’ll regret. The next morning, Violet wakes alone, his belongings cleared out and his side of the bed untouched.
