Part 1

Iron Flame Chapter 1

Violet wakes up in Aretia, recovering from a near-fatal poisoned wound, and finds herself face-to-face with Brennan, the older brother she thought had been dead for six years. He’s been living under a false name and working with a secret rebellion the entire time. Their reunion barely begins when an Assembly meeting summons Brennan away, and he tells her to wait. She doesn’t.

Instead, Violet follows Brennan and listens from the hallway with Bodhi and Imogen. The Assembly grapples with two serious problems. The rebellion risks losing the war within a year without a luminary. They also debate whether Violet and the other Basgiath cadets should return to the war college. One member urges expelling two.

When members spot Violet, they want to imprison her as a threat to the revolution. Brennan and Xaden defend her, and Violet enters the room to remind the Assembly of everything she has kept quiet. Felix, one of the more measured members, doesn’t argue against her but warns that Dain, who’s back at Basgiath, now sees Violet as an enemy and will try to have her killed if she returns.

Xaden ends the meeting, tells Violet to stay behind and spend time with Brennan while the others head to the valley, and promises that all eight cadets will decide together what to do next.

Iron Flame Chapter 2

Violet and Brennan speak privately after the Assembly clears out. Brennan tells her he survived because Naolin, Tairn’s previous rider, gave everything to save him at the cost of his own life. Brennan woke up on a cliffside near Aretia with his dragon Marbh wounded but alive, and other dragons hid them both until survivors from the city took them in. He never went home because he couldn’t serve Navarre once he knew the truth about the venin and the government’s decision to conceal it.

Over a map, Violet starts to grasp how bad things really are. Brennan believes they have six months at most before the venin push directly toward Navarre. He also points out that the iron box from Resson looks like a lure and that its craftsmanship is Navarrian, which neither Violet nor Brennan addresses directly but clearly unsettles them both. Violet shares her theory that wyvern aren’t born naturally but created and sustained by dark wielders channeling power into them, an idea that’s entirely new to Brennan.

Violet insists the group has to return to Basgiath. The authorities will execute the cadets carrying rebellion relics if they don’t return. She also pushes back on Brennan’s assumption that their mother ordered what happened at the War Games, pointing out that someone else was in charge that day.

Out in the valley, Violet and Brennan find Andarna, who has grown dramatically while Violet was recovering. Now adolescent-sized with black scales, Andarna struggles badly with the transition and stumbles when she tries to extend her wings. Xaden’s shadows catch her. Her harness will need to be rebuilt before they can fly.

The group eventually votes to return to Basgiath. Xaden says he has a plan but explains they need to be back within forty-eight hours, before graduation.

Iron Flame Chapter 3

The group lands at Basgiath just before sunrise, undetected. Tairn takes Andarna to the Vale while the others make their way into the quadrant.

Violet slips into Liam’s room and retrieves his personal letters before someone burns them with his belongings. She gives them to Rhiannon for safekeeping, and both Rhiannon and Ridoc understand immediately what the letters mean.

Then, Violet corners Xaden about the promise he made in Aretia regarding full honesty. Xaden admits he has known about Brennan since the day of Brennan’s supposed death, which is more than Violet expected. But he clarifies that he meant honesty about himself, not the revolution, and that as its leader, he’ll always keep some things from her. Violet draws a hard line. She demands complete disclosure, or she’ll find a way to stop loving him.

Xaden doesn’t budge but tells Violet he already spent months trying to do the same thing, and it didn’t work.

The group walks out into the graduation courtyard, where their names are already being read on the death roll. Xaden announces their arrival to the assembled crowd.

Iron Flame Chapter 4

The eight cadets walk into graduation and interrupt their own death roll. Xaden tells the leadership they were ambushed by gryphons beyond the wards and lost Liam and Soleil. Colonel Aetos immediately accuses the cadets of lying.

General Sorrengail shifts the pressure back onto Aetos, demanding to know why he emptied a strategically important outpost for a training exercise. Violet supports Xaden’s account, and he produces the original War Games orders as evidence. Violet’s mother believes them, reprimands Aetos in front of the formation, and orders him to her office. Before leaving, she tells Violet that surviving a poisoned blade as a first-year suggests Violet may be more like her mother than either of them realized.

Aetos corners the group privately on the dais and insists he knows the truth. Xaden points out that Aetos can’t expose what he suspects without revealing that he already knows about it, and that General Melgren can’t verify anything where marked ones are involved. Aetos backs down.

Back in formation, Dain approaches Violet, and she threatens him loudly enough for the whole quadrant to hear. Xaden then announces to everyone that Violet chose him and never chose Dain, striking at Dain’s pride before an audience. Xaden says the word Athebyne quietly, which drains the color from Dain’s face and ends the confrontation.

Graduation continues. Liam and Soleil’s names are read on the death roll. The third-years, including Xaden, will be gone by morning. Violet and her surviving squadmates advance to second-year status.

Iron Flame Chapter 5

That evening, the cadets celebrate their promotion and toast Liam, breaking the unwritten rule against speaking of the dead once the roll has been read.

Violet spots Xaden across the room, already dressed to leave. They exchange tense words about trust. Xaden holds firm that, as the leader of a revolution, he’ll always carry some secrets, and tells Violet to ask the questions she truly wants answered rather than wait for a promise of total disclosure. Violet holds firm in return, insisting she won’t trust him without it.

Xaden asks Violet to walk out with him. In the rotunda, they run into Colonel Aetos alongside Major Varrish, the incoming vice commandant. Aetos produces orders from General Melgren restricting Violet and Xaden to one visit every two weeks each, staggered so Tairn and Sgaeyl are never apart for more than a week but still far longer than the mating bond can sustain without causing both dragons real pain. Xaden stays calm and says “dragons give their own orders,” though Tairn’s response rattles Violet’s skull.

Aetos then warns that secrets make poor leverage because they die with whoever keeps them.

Iron Flame Chapter 6

Colonel Aetos’s threat pushes Violet’s signet over the edge, and she loses control, sending a lightning bolt into the courtyard. Xaden throws up a shadow shield to protect the nearby cadets.

Xaden tells Violet he’s been assigned to Samara, a remote outpost on the eastern edge of the Southern Wing, a full day’s flight away, limiting their contact to once every seven days. Sgaeyl is furious, and Tairn is no better.

Violet and Xaden use the cover of a public goodbye to pass information quietly. Xaden warns Violet to stay out of whatever the other marked ones are doing while he’s gone, since without a rebellion relic, any misstep would be visible to General Melgren. Their farewell ends in another unresolved standoff over trust, and Xaden leaves without anything between them settled.

Rhiannon finds Violet shortly after with two pieces of news. Dain has been named wingleader of Fourth Wing, and Rhiannon herself has just been promoted to squad leader.

Iron Flame Chapter 7

Five days later, the second-years attend their first Orientation as upperclassmen and meet Professor Grady, a former rider who’s new to teaching. He introduces them to the Rider Survival Course, a classified program that trains riders to survive behind enemy lines without their dragons. The course covers fieldcraft, navigation, and resistance to interrogation, and students from anywhere in the quadrant can be pulled without notice throughout the year. Grady’s message about the interrogation portion is clear: whatever happens, don’t give in. 

After class, Violet goes to the Archives and finds Jesinia, her old friend who’s a scribe pursuing the most rigorous degree path available. Violet lies to her for the first time, claiming she needs old books about Basgiath’s founding for a history debate. What Violet really wants is to search the Archives for anything that might help protect Aretia, convinced the key to winning the war is buried somewhere in those shelves. Jesinia hands her two old tomes, and Violet leaves with them.

Iron Flame Chapter 8

On Conscription Day, Violet and Rhiannon take the roll as candidates cross the parapet. Two stand out. The first is Cam, King Tauri’s third son, crossing under the false name Aaric Graycastle. Violet covers for him but tells Rhiannon who he really is. The second is Sloane Mairi, Liam’s younger sister, who already blames Violet for his death. Violet bends the rules to give Sloane parapet advice and watches every step until she reaches the other side.

During squad assignments, Sloane is placed in First Wing, but Dain reassigns her to Violet’s squad. Sloane refuses, and Rhiannon has to order her into formation.

At the welcome ceremony, three candidates break formation and run. Major Varrish’s one-eyed dragon Solas unleashes fire that kills the runners along with a first-year and most of Third Squad, including Ciaran, Imogen’s friend. Violet shouts a warning and tackles Sloane to the ground in time, but the fire scorches Violet’s back badly. Her dragon-scale armor keeps the injury from being fatal.

Tairn arrives in a fury and faces Solas in front of the formation. Solas retreats. Tairn exhales a blast of steam at Varrish on the dais. Varrish is now openly hostile toward Violet.

Iron Flame Chapter 9

Violet has been waking before dawn from nightmares about Resson and running each morning, convinced she needs enough stamina to outrun a venin’s draining attack if she’s ever separated from Tairn. Imogen figures this out and commits to training with her.

At Battle Brief, Colonel Markham and Professor Devera report two recent gryphon attacks on Navarrian territory: a mountain village about an hour’s flight from Montserrat, and the outpost at Athebyne, where riders were found near the armory, pointing to a weapons raid. After class, Violet asks Bodhi to get her involved in supply runs, but he shuts her down on direct orders from Xaden.

Rhiannon tells Violet she thinks something is being concealed in the Healer Quadrant. Nolon looks like he can barely stand, and a back room in the infirmary is now under guard. Violet offers a cover explanation but files the information away.

At combat assessment, Sloane demands to fight Violet instead of her assigned opponent. The professor refuses. When matches begin, a large first-year from Second Wing pushes through the crowd asking for Violet Sorrengail by name, then seizes Nadine, who pretended to be Violet, and snaps her neck.

Iron Flame Chapter 10

Violet kills the first-year assassin after a brutal fight, suffering a concussion and heavy bruising around her throat. She refuses to leave the rest of the assessment session and quietly tells Imogen she believes Aetos sent him.

That night, Xaden turns up at Violet’s room. He confirms Colonel Aetos was behind the attack, helps her clean up, and brings her soup. They talk about Samara, where his last name causes more trouble than his rebellion relic. They circle back to Liam’s death, each trying to take the blame and neither willing to accept the other’s version.

Before leaving to meet Bodhi, Xaden tells Violet to pay close attention to what happens when she visits Samara in seven days, then presses a folded piece of paper into her hand. He explains that his room there is warded so she can get in when she arrives. After he leaves, she opens it and finds that he has written her a letter.

Iron Flame Chapter 11

Violet and Imogen find Jesinia waiting in an alcove after their morning run. Jesinia drops off a book Violet requested and asks for help translating a few sentences from a dead language. While they talk, older riders and a professor haul away a second-year rider. Jesinia suspects she triggered it by logging his book request, as required by regulations.

Later, Rhiannon hands out mail at the flight field. Violet hopes for a letter from Xaden but receives one from her sister Mira instead, with several paragraphs blacked out by a censor. She tells Rhiannon she and Xaden are no longer together because he kept the truth from her.

During flight training, Major Varrish confronts Violet about Andarna, her rare feathertail dragon, who’s been absent from formations. He orders Andarna to appear the following week and mentions Violet’s father’s research into feathertails, a comment that makes Violet ask Tairn if it’s a coincidence.

A few nights later, Bodhi walks Violet to the flight field and asks her to relay a message to Xaden. Along the way, he lets slip the name Catriona, someone from Xaden’s past. Varrish shows up with two lieutenants and searches Violet’s bag but finds nothing.

Bodhi then admits the search was a planned test and reveals that Imogen and Eya were also attacked that day. Violet confronts him about being used without her knowledge. She mounts Tairn and finds the contraband already secured in packs on his saddle. They fly toward the front lines.

Iron Flame Chapter 12

Arriving at the Samara outpost, Violet learns from Tairn that a hostile drift of dragons has taken position across the border. She then tracks Xaden to a pit fight beneath the fortress, where riders compete for a single leave pass. Xaden wins his bout against a rider named Jarrett, and since Violet can only stay a day, he takes 24 hours of the pass and leaves the rest to Jarrett.

Alone together, Violet and Xaden kiss, but Xaden pulls back. He tells her he won’t use sex to win her back and that what he wants is her trust and her love.

Later, Violet asks about the smuggled weapons. Xaden explains that the daggers contain a metal alloy capable of holding power, which makes them able to kill venin. The same alloy reinforces the border wards, and outposts are positioned to prevent weak points from forming along their reach. The alloy must be regularly imbued with a rider’s power to stay effective, and Aretia needs both a forge and a luminary to produce more of it.

Violet asks more questions, but Xaden tells her the answers are classified. They work on Violet’s mental shields instead.
