Iron Flame Chapter 28
Violet and Xaden fly beyond Basgiath’s wards after midnight to meet a group of Poromish gryphon riders. Tairn refuses to let Violet dismount, so she watches from his back.
Three riders approach. One is Syrena, a veteran Violet recognizes from Resson. Another is a young woman named Cat, who clearly shares a past with Xaden.
Xaden confronts Syrena about a recent attack that left him seriously injured. Syrena argues the daggers powering Navarre’s wards could arm her fighters instead. Xaden refuses, and Violet adds that pulling those daggers would leave Basgiath’s hatching grounds open to the venin.
Cat mentions Viscount Tecarus, implying Xaden has twice passed up a chance to trade for a luminary needed to finish their weapons forge. Xaden shuts it down, and Violet files the detail away for later.
Xaden hands over twenty‑three daggers and tells Syrena the next shipment will come through Garrick near Athebyne. Syrena warns that Poromiel may have less than a year before the venin arrive. The two groups part ways.
On the flight back, Violet recalls what Bodhi once told her about Catriona and understands that Cat’s feelings for Xaden run much deeper than a passing attraction.
Iron Flame Chapter 29
On the flight back, Violet confirms that Cat is Xaden’s ex. Once they land, Xaden explains the Tecarus situation. The viscount will hand over the luminary in exchange for watching Violet wield lightning, but Xaden doesn’t trust him to stop there and refuses. Before they head inside, Xaden slips an alloy‑hilted dagger into a sheath on Violet’s jacket so she always has a way to defend herself against venin.
Violet then brings Xaden up to speed on everything he missed: the Zolya leaflet, Jack Barlowe being kept alive, Major Varrish dislocating Violet’s shoulder during interrogation, the signet‑blocking elixir, Dain’s challenge, and Aaric.
Back at Basgiath, Emetterio tips Violet off that Colonel Panchek has accepted Tairn’s bond as the official reason for her unauthorized departure, and she should lean into that story. Varrish is waiting and searches Violet’s bag and jacket. The dagger would expose both Violet and Xaden, but Rhiannon pulls it through the wall with her signet, a breakthrough she has never managed before. Professor Kaori then steps in and shuts Varrish down.
Back with her squad, Violet decides they deserve the truth and tells them the dagger is for killing venin.
Iron Flame Chapter 30
Violet comes clean to Rhiannon, Sawyer, and Ridoc about the wyvern, the venin, the assassination attempts, and the threat beyond the wards. She holds back only what would expose Aretia and Brennan. Her friends take it better than expected and volunteer to help research how the First Six built the wards.
Ridoc reveals he once stumbled across a classified ledger referencing the personal journals of Lyra and Warrick, two of the First Six, hidden in a sublevel vault under the Archives. Violet knew nothing about it, and neither does Jesinia, though the scribe agrees to start searching.
At Threshing, a coded note from Jesinia arrives suggesting she has located the vault. Ridoc goes to meet her while Violet reports for her watch on the academic tower.
Violet arrives to find four infantry soldiers waiting to kill her and Eya. Violet takes out two, but a third runs Eya through. The last soldier forces Violet over the edge of the turret. She clings to the stonework with her fingertips, no foothold beneath her. Just before she falls, someone drives a dagger through the soldier’s throat from behind.
Iron Flame Chapter 31
Jack Barlowe appears at the turret’s edge and hauls Violet back over the wall. He says he didn’t know it was Violet when he heard the screams and considers them even, since Violet once killed him and he has now saved her. Then Jack leaves.
Eya is dead. Violet sits against the wall, shaking, and waits for the adrenaline to pass. She thinks about Colonel Aetos and how he’ll keep picking off everyone who flew into Resson until none are left.
Ridoc arrives and finds Violet. Violet tells Ridoc what happened and that she believes Aetos is responsible. Ridoc then tells Violet that Jesinia has found the vault and knows how to bypass its wards, but entry requires someone of King Tauri’s bloodline. The journals aren’t in a sublevel vault beneath the Archives but in the royal vault. Violet glances at Eya’s boots and tells Ridoc it’s fortunate they have access to a prince who hates his father.
Iron Flame Chapter 32
After arriving that Saturday, Xaden learns Violet told her squadmates the secret. Violet explains that Rhiannon had to pull the alloy dagger through the wall to stop Major Varrish from finding it, which made disclosure unavoidable. Xaden asks who else knows, flags the risks, and turns his attention to the heist.
Xaden agrees to help but notes the plan has gaps, starting with Aaric. Violet kisses Xaden, a deliberate choice this time. They stop before things go further and open the door to find Ridoc and Sawyer on the floor, having listened in.
The group assembles in Violet’s room. Aaric arrives without knowing why he’s been summoned. Xaden tells Aaric flatly that he killed Aaric’s brother and isn’t sorry. The confrontation nearly comes to blows before Bodhi steps in. What finally secures Aaric’s cooperation is that the heist means stealing from Aaric’s own father.
Three hours later, the group walks to the Archives in scribe robes. Jesinia meets them at the entrance and insists only four of them can go inside. A first‑year scribe almost blows their cover, but Jesinia talks the scribe down while Xaden holds his shadows ready.
Jesinia leads Violet, Xaden, Aaric, and Imogen to a hidden classroom where a lever behind a bookcase opens a spiral staircase down to the royal vault. She warns they have forty‑five minutes before the Archives lock down for the night. Xaden takes Violet’s hand, and they head down.
Iron Flame Chapter 33
Xaden knocks out the two guards while the others wait, then leads the group to a warded archway opening into a small circular library. Aaric grabs Violet’s hand and pulls her through without warning. The wards drop Violet to her knees. Xaden cannot follow because Aaric refuses to pull him in, a small act of spite.
Violet recovers, and she and Aaric search the shelves and cabinetry for the two journals. Violet recalls a line from the Scribe Manual about light damaging old documents and realizes the journals would be kept away from it. She pulls the velvet cloth off the center pedestal and finds a circle of glass set into the top. The journals are stored beneath it. Aaric reaches in to retrieve them, and his hands blister badly from the inner wards.
Violet packs the journals into Jesinia’s satchels. With two minutes left, Aaric pulls Violet back through the wards, and they run. Xaden leads the group up the staircase, through the classroom, and into the main library just as the bells begin to toll. The vault door is already swinging shut. Xaden uses his shadows to force it open long enough to push Violet through, then Imogen. As the seventh bell rings, Xaden is still in the doorway, reaching back for Aaric. Whether they both clear the door in time is left uncertain.
Iron Flame Chapter 34
Xaden pulls Aaric through just before the door slams shut. The group sheds their scribe robes, hands them off, and splits up to establish alibis. Ridoc takes Aaric back to his room while Rhiannon fetches a healer for Aaric’s badly blistered hands.
In the courtyard, Xaden pulls Violet into an alcove, and they kiss. Violet opens Warrick’s journal and finds what they came for, which is a firsthand account of how the First Six placed the wardstone and activated the wards. She gives Xaden that journal to take to Brennan and keeps the other. Xaden tucks it inside his jacket and leaves.
Violet stays to watch Xaden fly off. Nolon approaches with lemonade, mentioning that Jack told him she was out there. Violet drinks without suspicion. Her vision blurs and her connection to Tairn goes fuzzy. She realizes too late the drink was drugged. Nolon apologizes as she drops the mug. Major Varrish appears over Violet as she goes down.
Iron Flame Chapter 35
Violet wakes strapped to a chair in the brig, her connection to Tairn blocked by a serum Major Varrish’s team keeps forcing on her. Nolon and Varrish question Violet about the journal, her accomplices, and why and how she did it. Nora, one of Varrish’s aides, can detect lies, so Violet sticks to selective truths, then stops speaking altogether.
Varrish tortures Violet. Over five days, he breaks her bones repeatedly while Nolon mends her between sessions so it can start again. A hallucination of Liam appears and stays throughout, talking Violet through each round. She gives up nothing.
Eventually, Varrish lets his real goal slip. Violet isn’t the prize. She’s bait to draw Xaden into the same chair.
Later, Varrish brings Dain in, tells him Violet stole the journal to bring down Navarre’s wards, and orders him to pull her memories. Violet fights back by dragging Dain through what she witnessed at Resson, forcing him to feel the wyvern, the venin, and Liam’s death. When Dain pulls away, he reports that Violet has been stealing weapons for the enemy. Violet is certain she has failed everyone.
Dain puts Violet’s own dagger to her throat, then pivots and stabs Varrish instead. He cuts Violet free, arms her, and tries to get her moving. Nora lunges from the doorway. A hand reaches around Nora from behind and slices her throat. Violet looks up to find Xaden.
Iron Flame Chapter 36
Xaden and Garrick arrive to rescue Violet from her cell. Xaden is on the verge of killing Dain, but Violet intervenes and tells Xaden that Dain helped save her. Violet and Xaden kill Varrish together. Xaden tells Violet he loves her and insists they leave.
On the staircase, the group runs into General Sorrengail. Violet’s mother hands over an antidote for the serum and asks to talk to Violet alone. She reveals she arranged for Xaden to protect Violet during her first year in exchange for allowing the marked ones into the quadrant.
Then, the general tells the group to use the chaos to get out. She also lets slip that Colonel Markham is away in Calldyr.
Back on campus, Dain addresses the full rider formation and exposes the truth about the wyvern and the venin. When things spiral, Xaden takes over and gives everyone a choice. They can stay and fight for a kingdom built on lies or leave and fight for the truth. Professor Carr attacks, but Bodhi shuts him down. Professor Devera announces she’s joining the group, and nearly half the student body leaves with them.
The group flies south, crosses into Tyrrendor without interference, and lands at Aretia. Brennan meets them outside Riorson House, shaken by Violet’s condition and the number of riders she has brought.
