A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 56

The alliance ambushes Hybern’s forces crossing into Summer Court territory. Rhysand conceals the army, and the attack catches Hybern unprepared. Illyrian warriors descend from above while Keir’s Darkbringers push from the ground.

When a Hybern commander refuses to retreat, Cassian breaks from the line, cuts through the enemy, and kills the commander with a thrown spear. The commander’s death breaks Hybern’s morale, and their soldiers flee toward the river where Tarquin’s army waits. Tarquin drowns survivors who surrender on the spot with his magic.

Back at camp, Nesta notices Cassian’s injured wrist and tends to it. A charged moment passes between them before Mor arrives and breaks the spell.

Days later, Azriel reports a separate Hybern force pushing north toward the Winter Court border. Varian proposes leaving a glamour to fool Hybern’s scouts into thinking the army is still in place while Rhysand conceals the army’s move north. Feyre helps build the illusion and is nearly spent by the time she finishes.

When the alliance catches up, Hybern is ready for them. Keir’s soldiers collapse under a cavalry charge, and Cassian throws himself into the gap to hold the line. With Rhysand and Tarquin running on empty, the alliance is pushed back. Feyre concludes that attrition won’t win the war and that she must find the Suriel to locate Hybern’s true army.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 57

Feyre convinces Mor to leave camp and join Cassian and Azriel on the front lines, where the fighting has grown desperate. It’s a practical decision, but Feyre also has a hidden reason for wanting her gone. Feyre believes the Suriel will only show itself if she comes alone.

Once Mor leaves, Feyre goes to Elain and asks her to use her seer gift to find the Suriel’s location on a map. Elain is unsure she even knows how to do it, but she tries. After a moment, Elain points to a spot on the map and tells Feyre the Suriel is moving toward the Middle, the ancient forest that sits dangerously close to the Weaver’s domain.

Feyre winnows there alone, her magic nearly exhausted from everything she has already used it for. She moves through the forest carefully, sword in hand, listening for any sign of the creature. Then a voice speaks up behind her. It’s the Suriel, and it wants to know whether she came to kill it or to ask for its help again.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 58

Feyre wants the Suriel to find out where Hybern’s army is hiding. The Suriel admits it can’t locate them because the Cauldron’s magic, which is older and more powerful than the Suriel itself, is masking their location. It tells Feyre to use Nesta instead, since Nesta absorbed power from the Cauldron and could track it through bone scrying. The army moves with the Cauldron, so finding the Cauldron means finding the army.

Then Feyre asks why the spell she cast to neutralize the Cauldron failed. The Suriel tells her it didn’t fail exactly. It just would have killed her before it finished working. There’s no safer alternative, and even if there were, getting close enough to the Cauldron a second time would be nearly impossible since Hybern won’t allow it.

Before the conversation ends, the Suriel tells Feyre that the answer to stopping Hybern lies in the Book’s second and final pages. An ash arrow strikes it in the throat before it can say anything more. More arrows follow, and the Suriel goes down. Then a familiar voice calls out from the woods. It’s Ianthe, and she has two Hybern soldiers with her.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 59

The Suriel is gravely wounded, pierced by ash arrows Ianthe used to bring it down. It turns out Ianthe placed a tracking spell on the robe she gave the Suriel, which activated the moment Feyre got close.

Feyre quickly realizes she can’t heal the Suriel until the arrows are removed. The Suriel, despite knowing the creature could be captured and taken to Hybern, silently pleads with Feyre to abandon it and save herself. Feyre refuses. She steps out of hiding, trades words with Ianthe, and bolts into the forest with Ianthe and the guards in pursuit.

The whole chase is a calculated move on Feyre’s part to pull Ianthe and the guards away and give the Suriel a chance to get free. Feyre runs until she reaches a familiar destination and throws herself through the door of the Weaver’s cottage.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 60

Feyre uses the Weaver as a trap. She holds the cottage door open just long enough for Ianthe and the guards to walk inside, then lets it slam shut behind them. She runs for the trees while their screams fade in the distance.

Then Feyre finds the Suriel collapsed in the forest, dying from its wounds. The Suriel refuses her help and asks only that she stay beside it. In its final moments, it tells her that the warning it gave her long ago was always meant to lead her to Rhysand, and it urges her to stay with him. It also asks her to leave the world a kinder place than the one she found.

After the Suriel dies, Helion appears. Feyre asks for his cloak to drape over the body before she lets him cremate it. Helion then takes her hand and brings her back to camp.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 61

Helion brings Feyre back to the war camp. The moment Feyre sees Rhysand, she falls apart. Rhysand holds her while she cries, then tells her what happened once she’s calmer. They won the battle, barely. Tarquin dealt with the survivors. Cassian was badly hurt. Feyre runs to his tent, where a healer works to close a deep wound across Cassian’s abdomen while Mor and Azriel stand watch. Rhysand asks Feyre to leave a note next time she disappears. His words stay light, but the fear behind them is obvious.

The healer stabilizes Cassian, and he wakes up. Rhysand lays into him for ignoring a direct order and charging back into the fighting alone. Cassian pushes back hard. The two go at it until the anger gives way to something more honest. Rhysand admits, quietly, that he can’t stomach watching any of them get hurt. Feyre slips out and leaves Rhysand and Cassian to it.

Outside the tent, Feyre finds Nesta and quickly tells her Cassian will be fine. Then Mor pulls Feyre aside and tears into her for lying about staying safe at camp. Feyre fights back, calling out something Mor has never wanted to face. Mor has feelings for Azriel that she’s never acted on or admitted to. The conversation ends badly. Feyre walks out. Amren finds her almost immediately, carrying the Book.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 62

Feyre returns from a tense argument with Mor to find Cassian settled into a chair at the desk. Amren sets the Book down, and Feyre relays what the Suriel told her about specific pages holding the secret to countering the Cauldron’s power.

Amren produces a small bag of bones and stones and tells Nesta to use them to locate the Cauldron. Nesta closes her eyes and reaches for the Cauldron mentally, with Cassian quietly standing at her side. She goes too deep, and fear pulls her under.

Feyre pushes into Nesta’s mind to bring her back, and both sisters find themselves inside Hybern’s war camp, with the Cauldron right before them. The Cauldron notices them. Feyre grabs Nesta, and they run. Feyre shouts at her sister to open her fist and drop the pieces before the connection swallows them whole.

The bones and stones fall onto the map in a tight cluster, marking Hybern’s position along the western edge of human territory, dangerously close to where Feyre’s family lives. Rhysand brings in Tarquin and Helion, and the mood turns grim. The alliance is badly outnumbered and short on time to gather more allies. They agree to rest and regroup at dawn.

Then Varian walks in and, without a word to anyone, drops to his knees and kisses Amren in front of the whole room.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 63

After dinner, the group splits off for the night. Amren and Varian slip away together, Cassian takes Nesta to rest, and Feyre and Rhysand eat quietly before going to sleep.

Feyre dreams of the Cauldron watching her and wakes up convinced something is wrong. She and Rhysand go outside and find Nesta, then Amren and Varian, all feeling the same unease. Amren tells them that by probing the Cauldron earlier, they revealed their location to it, and now it has come looking for them.

Meanwhile, Feyre, Nesta, and Amren can hear the Cauldron singing while the others cannot, because all three were Made by it. The song gradually fades, and the presence lifts. Amren believes the Cauldron came simply to find their camp for Hybern.

Then Azriel asks about Elain, and everyone rushes to her tent to find it empty. Rhysand winnows off to search while Azriel checks the cot and determines she left recently. Feyre suspects the Cauldron drew Elain out by appearing to her as Graysen, promising to restore her humanity, which Feyre had seen in her dream. They run to the edge of camp, where Rhysand returns with only Elain’s cloak. The Cauldron has taken Elain back to Hybern.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 64

Nesta makes it clear to the group that the sheer size of the enemy forces makes any rescue attempt nearly impossible. Azriel says he’s going in regardless, and Feyre decides to go with him.

Feyre’s plan is to disguise herself as Ianthe, using her shapeshifting to take on the high priestess’s face. The transformation burns through almost all her remaining magic. She borrows one of Azriel’s Siphons to complete the look, has the camp blacksmith forge a circlet from her silver candlesticks, and gets a set of priestess robes from the camp priestess.

When Rhysand returns and learns that the other High Lords had nothing useful to offer, he helps Feyre strap hidden weapons beneath her robes and gives her a rallying speech before they leave. He also tells Azriel to bring Feyre and Elain back alive, no matter what it takes.

Azriel’s shadow magic drops them onto a forested hilltop overlooking the massive camp. He melts into darkness to act as Feyre’s shadow while Feyre, dressed as Ianthe and wearing the circlet, heads down the hill and walks straight into Hybern’s camp.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 65

Disguised as Ianthe, Feyre slips past the entrance guards into the Hybern camp, with Azriel concealed in the shadows nearby. She passes a bonfire celebration and spots a young woman being tortured on a rack, though Feyre is forced to keep moving.

Jurian intercepts Feyre before she reaches the king’s tent, sees through her disguise, and tips her off that Elain is alive and being held inside. He arranges a diversion and leaves the tortured girl waiting at a cliff on the western edge of camp for Feyre and Azriel to collect on their way out.

Inside the tent, Feyre and Azriel find Elain gagged and bound with enchanted steel that resists Azriel’s power. They take her anyway and run. The king’s hounds close in. Tamlin materializes in beast form and throws himself at them to buy Feyre and Azriel time. Feyre takes an arrow through the shoulder but keeps moving.

At the cliff’s edge, Azriel launches into the air with Elain and the rescued girl. Feyre makes a desperate running takeoff and is barely lifted clear by a gust of spring wind at the last possible moment. Feyre tears a hole through the king’s wards, and the group winnows to safety. Tamlin clears the cliff just behind them and escapes too.

Back at camp, healers treat the wounded, and Nesta breaks down at the sight of her sisters safe. The three end up lying together until morning.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 66

Feyre wakes to Kallias and his Winter Court army arriving at camp. She checks her wounds, arranges food for her sisters, and sets off through camp.

While making her way through camp, Feyre runs into Mor, and the two reconcile. Mor confides that she’s drawn to women and has never been able to say so openly, given her family’s values and upbringing. Mor’s attraction to women explains why she could never return Azriel’s feelings. The woman Mor loved most was a human queen who lived and died centuries ago, a loss she has carried ever since. Feyre promises to keep her confidence.

After that, Feyre goes to find Amren, but Amren has shut herself inside her tent and refuses to let anyone in. Feyre gives up and heads to the war tent.

Inside, the High Lords learn that Hybern has changed course and is driving his army east toward the human lands, having worn them down on purpose so they would be too spent to intercept him in time. Nesta suggests that Hybern is also doing it out of spite toward the three sisters.

Rhysand says the alliance has no choice but to march south and stand between Hybern and the humans. Feyre proposes winnowing civilians to safety that very night. Tarquin offers Adriata as a refuge.

Amren then walks in and drops the Book on the table. She tells the group that she has found a way to stop not just the Cauldron but Hybern’s entire army, using the battle as a distraction while she, Feyre, and the two sisters act as the four who were Made.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 67

The group comes up with a plan to seize the Cauldron by having several of the Made touch it together, which will let them survive its power long enough to use it against the king and his army. Amren has already found the spell they need inside the Book. They agree to make their move once the fighting is at its most chaotic and the king’s attention is pulled away.

That night, Feyre and Rhysand spend hours winnowing human families out of Hybern’s path to safety near Adriata, where Cresseida is waiting to receive them. One family refuses to go, so Rhysand moves the family by force. Feyre and Rhysand work until they’re completely drained, and Rhysand falls asleep the moment he hits the bed.

Watching Rhysand sleep, Feyre accepts that most of them probably won’t survive the next day. She decides on her own to go to the Bone Carver, hoping he can buy her friends even a little more time on the battlefield. She slips away without waking Rhysand and winnows to the Court of Nightmares, where she finds the stairwell leading up to the Ouroboros mirror. Running on the last of her strength, Feyre starts climbing the thousand steps toward it.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 68

Feyre enters a snow-filled underground chamber and finds the Ouroboros, a massive circular mirror framed in bronze by a serpent biting its own tail. At first, the mirror shows only her reflection, but then she notices a monstrous creature crawling down the wall behind her. She spins around, dagger ready, and finds nothing. Looking back at the mirror, she realizes the beast was her reflection all along, a glimpse of what lives beneath the surface of who she is.

With the mirror in hand, Feyre returns to the Bone Carver’s prison cell. He’s stunned that she actually retrieved it, and when he asks how, she simply tells him she looked. She then orders the Bone Carver to hold up his end of their bargain and join the battle ahead.

That’s when the Bone Carver reveals the mirror was never actually his asking price. He needed to know whether Feyre was worth his help, because the Ouroboros destroys most people who look into it. Some never even realize the horror they’re seeing is a reflection of themselves. Others go in confident and come out shattered by how small they truly are. Feyre did neither. She looked, and she didn’t break. Furious at being tested without her knowledge, Feyre swallows it, takes the Bone Carver’s hand, and they walk out together.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 69

The army marches past Feyre’s burned village and her father’s half-destroyed estate before stopping for a midday rest. During the break, Azriel does something unprecedented and gives Elain his legendary blade, Truth-Teller, telling her the blade has never failed him. Rhysand then gathers the whole Inner Circle and speaks to each of them personally about what they mean to him, acknowledging that whatever happens on the battlefield, knowing them has been the great honor of his life.

At the battlefield, Cassian confirms that Hybern has taken every strategic advantage available, claiming the high ground and positioning its forces carefully. The two armies begin trading magic to break each other’s shields while Feyre and Rhysand wait.

Feyre then reveals that she spent the previous night retrieving the Ouroboros mirror and passing its test, which required her to confront and fully accept the worst parts of herself. She drops a glamour she’d maintained for hours, exposing the Bone Carver and the shadow creature Bryaxis at the front of their army, both bound to fight for them.

Rhysand counters with a surprise of his own. He had sent Helion to bargain with the Weaver, trading the Weaver’s freedom from her containment spell for her help in battle. The Weaver appears wearing Ianthe’s jewel as a war trophy. The chapter closes with the Bone Carver, Bryaxis, and the Weaver turning on Hybern’s army at the same time.
