A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 28
Feyre endures a punishing training session with Cassian at the House of Wind, followed by a flying lesson with Azriel on wind currents and air pressure. She returns home exhausted and sore.
Mor is already at the town house with updates on the High Lords. Helion is in. Thesan will attend only if the meeting takes place somewhere he considers safe, and Kallias wants a security detail. The High Lords of the Spring, Autumn, and Summer Courts haven’t replied, which doesn’t sit well with Feyre.
Feyre and Mor talk through the previous night’s fallout. Mor says she’s made her peace with Rhys’s deal, even if she hates it. She and Rhysand sorted things out that morning. Azriel’s role in everything still stings, but Mor is working to let it go rather than let it damage her relationships with the people she cares about.
Then Madja, an elderly healer, arrives to examine Elain. Madja finds nothing physically wrong but can’t fully assess Elain’s mind because of the Cauldron’s interference. She recommends that Lucien use their mating bond to sense what Madja couldn’t.
Nesta objects and demands another healer. Feyre refuses and insists that Lucien try first. Lucien agrees and steps away to get ready.
A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 29
Feyre and Mor watch Lucien attempt to connect with Elain through their mating bond. When Lucien pulls on the bond, Elain is startled and confused, and Nesta immediately appears in the doorway, accusing Lucien of doing something to her sister. Lucien apologizes, but Elain drifts into a vision, and Nesta takes Elain out to the garden. Lucien then confirms that the bond is real.
Meanwhile, Rhysand and Cassian return from their first meeting with the Darkbringer commanders. Rhysand tells Feyre through their bond that Tarquin may attend the upcoming summit. Lucien volunteers to help determine a meeting location after he notices the pile of letters from the other High Lords in front of Feyre.
Over the next two days, Feyre has flying lessons with Azriel, who corrects her form as she keeps crashing into trees. At one point, he tells her about Nephelle, a Seraphim cartographer who had been rejected from the fighting legion because her wings were too small for combat. When Miryam was badly wounded during her people’s escape across a parted sea, Nephelle carried Miryam to safety through a narrowing corridor of collapsing water, flying faster than anyone thought possible.
Azriel calls it the Nephelle Philosophy, which is the idea that even the things that seem like limitations can turn out to be a person’s greatest advantage. Feyre takes it to heart and keeps training.
That night, Rhysand draws Feyre a bath and tends to her muscles. Then they settle in for the night.
A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 30
Feyre wakes up too sore to train and sends word to Cassian and Azriel, who both show up at the town house regardless. She asks Cassian to fly Nesta to the House of Wind since she can’t manage it herself, then Feyre winnows there ahead of Cassian and Nesta.
Once at the House, Feyre takes Nesta down into the library to search for anything on repairing the wall. While they work through the stacks, the lights start going out around them, darkness swallowing the path behind them. Feyre grabs Nesta and runs.
Feyre tries reaching Rhysand through their bond but gets no response. Before she can winnow herself and Nesta out, two High Fae emerge from the darkness and blow faebane dust in her face, and her magic goes dead.
The men introduce themselves as the King of Hybern’s Ravens. They got past the library’s wards by taking control of a priestess’s mind, and their target is Nesta. They reveal that Nesta absorbed power from the Cauldron during her transformation, and the king wants it back. That also explains why the Cauldron has been unable to destroy the wall.
A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 31
Feyre decides her only option is to flee deeper into the library pit rather than fight the Ravens or endanger the priestesses above. She grabs Nesta, and they run deeper into the dark.
As Feyre and Nesta descend, the Ravens taunt them about the queens who entered the Cauldron. The youngest queen had sought immortality but emerged a withered old woman because the Cauldron was furious over what Nesta had taken from it. Feyre realizes that outcome matches the vision Elain had tried to warn them about.
At the bottom, Feyre sends Nesta toward a distant light while she stays behind. She topples a row of bookshelves to block the Ravens and cuts off her own escape. Alone in total darkness with her magic drained, Feyre navigates by touch and loses the Ravens briefly in the blackness.
Feyre calls out to the creature that lives in the pit. An ancient, unseen entity responds and asks what Feyre will give it. She offers company, and they strike a bargain. Feyre shuts her eyes while the creature kills the Ravens.
Cassian arrives and pulls Feyre away before she can look. Rhysand lands hard enough to shake the mountain, storms past Feyre and Cassian in a fury, and spreads darkness around himself to shield the scene. Cassian flies both Feyre and Nesta out as screaming erupts again from below.
A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 32
After the attack, Cassian brings Feyre and Nesta to the family library and pours them both brandy. Cassian confirms the Hybern king is gone.
Shortly after, Rhysand arrives with blood on his hands from killing Hybern’s Ravens. Feyre has a new tattoo on her arm, the mark of a bargain she struck with the creature living deep in the library. The bargain was the only way Feyre could keep herself from being taken.
Rhysand explains that Hybern used a single-use spell of enormous power to punch through their defenses, one he’d been saving for the right moment. He also says that Amren is already shoring up the wards and searching the city for remaining threats. Feyre then refocuses Rhysand and reminds him what they gained from the Ravens. They now know why the Cauldron hasn’t been at full strength and that Hybern considers Nesta a higher priority target than Feyre.
Back at the town house, Rhysand tells the group they must keep the attack quiet. If news of a second breach in Velaris became public, it would make them look weak ahead of a war summit ten days away. Mor points out they have almost no allies.
Elain then speaks up. She says the queen might come to their side, someone with wings like fire. Azriel questions Elain carefully and realizes the Cauldron made Elain into a seer.
A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 33
The group comes to understand that Elain is a seer, and her visions suddenly take on new weight. Through Elain’s sight, they piece together that the sixth queen named Vassa was betrayed by the other queens and handed over to a sorcerer-lord who holds her captive near a lake deep on the continent. Vassa spends her days as a bird with burning feathers and returns to her human self only at night.
Whether to pursue Vassa becomes a point of friction. Cassian thinks the risk and time make it a bad call, but Mor disagrees and wants to go herself. Rhysand sides with Cassian and rules it out, as Mor is needed closer to home. The debate stalls until Lucien volunteers. His enchanted eye gives him an edge in tracking someone hidden behind magic, and he has no court left to anchor him anyway. Rhysand agrees and offers to get Lucien as far as possible before he continues on his own. They settle on him leaving the following morning.
Feyre leads Rhysand away, blood still staining his hands from the earlier fight, and cleans them for him. He tells her he feels like he let the priestesses down, since the library was the one place they felt truly safe. Feyre doesn’t let him shoulder the blame and instead places it on Hybern. She then tells Rhysand the only thing left to do is move forward.
A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 34
Amren spends the night hunting Velaris for Hybern spies and assassins but comes up empty. Rhysand focuses his attention on the traumatized priestesses. He helps them feel safe after learning that Hybern’s Ravens had posed as elderly scholars to manipulate one of the priestesses into opening the door.
The next morning, Feyre sees Lucien off as he heads for the human continent. Their goodbye is short but warm, and just before Rhysand whisks him away, Lucien catches a glimpse of Elain watching from the stairs. They share a brief, wordless look before Lucien turns and leaves. Elain moves as if she wants to call after him, but Lucien is already gone.
Rhysand returns soon after to confirm Lucien made it safely. Then Amren storms in with alarming news that Hybern has launched an attack on the Summer Court and is now laying siege to Adriata.
A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 35
Azriel and Cassian return to the town house with grim faces. The group learns that Hybern has attacked the Summer Court. Amren received a private warning from Varian telling the Night Court to prepare its own defenses, making it clear that Tarquin is overwhelmed and needs help.
Rhysand moves fast. He sends Cassian to the Illyrian war-camps to mobilize the legions, while Azriel goes ahead to scout Adriata. Mor arrives shortly after, fully armed. She and Feyre wait for Rhysand to give the signal.
The signal comes through the bond as a pulse of midnight thunder. Feyre and Mor winnow to a hill overlooking the bay at Adriata. The water is already stained red, smoke rises from the city, and Hybern’s fleet dwarfs Tarquin’s. The Illyrians are fighting in the skies above, but Rhys’s power looks noticeably diminished, possibly because Hybern is using faebane against him.
Word arrives that Hybern soldiers have pushed through to the northern side of Tarquin’s palace, where the defenders are surrounded. Mor winnows herself and Feyre inside. The palace is chaotic. The High Fae have retreated to the upper floors and sealed themselves in, leaving the lesser fae below unprotected. Mor senses Hybern soldiers working their way up from the lower levels, and she and Feyre move to cut them off.
A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 36
Feyre and Mor fight their way through a palace overrun by Hybern soldiers, starting with a group that has cornered terrified servants. They clear the building floor by floor until they find Tarquin’s Summer Court soldiers badly outnumbered in one of the lower corridors. Feyre floods the hallway with darkness, and she and Mor winnow through it, picking off the Hybern soldiers until none are left standing.
The fight spills out into the city streets, where Feyre and Mor spend hours clearing Hybern forces. During a brief lull, Feyre reaches out through her bond to Rhysand and gets nothing back but silence and walls she can’t get through. Then a crack opens, and she slips inside before it closes behind her.
Feyre sees everything through Rhysand’s eyes. Rhysand stands on the deck of a Hybern warship, surrounded by soldiers. He tracked the ship down because something on board has been muffling his power throughout the battle, which is why so many lives have been lost, and the fighting has dragged on. Before Rhysand can act, the soldiers step aside, and the King of Hybern walks up from belowdecks to face him. Feyre is trapped inside Rhysand’s mind with no way to do anything but watch.
A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 37
Rhysand faces the King of Hybern. While they exchange taunts, Rhysand quietly searches for the source of a magical dampener that has been suppressing his side’s power. Through their mental bond, Feyre urges him to just kill the king and be done with it, but Rhysand keeps calculating whether taking the king alive might be worth more in the long run.
The king eventually launches into a speech about his grievances, arguing that his people were sidelined and looked down on, which gives Rhysand the opening he needs. He fires a concentrated blast of power at the king, but it passes straight through him.
The king was never actually there, only a magical projection. He laughs it off, tells Rhysand the battle was only meant as a small preview of what’s coming, then vanishes, taking the dampener spell with him. With the illusion gone and the enemy soldiers left with no backup, Rhysand wipes them out entirely.
A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 38
Rhysand forces Feyre out of his mind after she witnesses him confronting enemy soldiers, and Mor catches her in the street before she collapses. Shaken and sick, Feyre tells Mor what she saw. The King of Hybern had been nothing more than a projection, which was why Rhysand had no way to strike back at him mentally.
Mor winnows herself and Feyre to the palace, which is now crowded with wounded soldiers from the battle. They cross paths with Varian, who points them toward the oak dining room.
Inside, Feyre and Mor find Tarquin, not Rhys. He confronts Feyre about the theft and deception during their earlier visit and blames her and Rhysand for weakening the Spring Court and effectively clearing a path for Hybern to reach his shores. Feyre tells Tarquin their goals are the same.
Rhysand arrives and tries to explain their reasoning, but Tarquin orders them to leave and take their army with them. On his way out, Rhysand announces to everyone present that Feyre is High Lady of the Night Court. The declaration stuns everyone in the room. Tarquin dismisses them anyway, and Rhysand and Feyre winnow away.
A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 39
After the battle against the Hybern fleet, the Illyrian camp above Adriata is overwhelmed with casualties. Azriel’s scouts confirm that the fleet has retreated across the sea, and Feyre spends hours helping the healers until she collapses from exhaustion.
Feyre wakes to find Rhysand sitting beside her, going over casualty lists. He admits that the king’s attacks were never purely strategic but were personal provocations designed to destabilize him. Feyre pushes back against his growing despair and convinces him to move the meeting with the other High Lords up to three days from now.
Afterward, Feyre argues that she and Rhysand need to stop performing carefully managed versions of themselves for political gain. At the meeting, she wants them to show up as they actually are and to be honest with their potential allies. Rhysand agrees with Feyre, though they both decide that her full powers should stay hidden for now, since revealing those powers could turn wavering allies against her.
Back in Velaris, Nesta paces the town house foyer when the group returns, though she flatly denies any concern over Cassian’s whereabouts. Mor snaps at Nesta, and the two have a brief standoff before Rhysand steps in and orders Mor to send out the dispatches. Feyre telepathically asks Rhysand to take her to the Prison right away.
A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 40
Feyre goes to the Bone Carver to negotiate for his assistance. Rhysand waits in the hall while Feyre tries to convince the Carver to name a different price, hoping to avoid claiming the Ouroboros mirror. The Carver refuses, insisting the mirror is the only thing he wants. Feyre and Rhysand leave empty-handed, and Rhysand tosses the Carver a leftover chicken bone on the way out, earning an outraged hiss from him.
Back at the town house, Feyre and Rhysand find Elain in the kitchen with Nuala and Cerridwen, the two handmaiden spies, learning to bake bread. A small but genuine spark of life shows in Elain, and Feyre encourages her before slipping away with Rhysand.
The next morning, Nesta is at the breakfast table waiting, though she refuses to say outright that she’s waiting for Cassian. When Nesta asks Feyre why she rushes into battle without hesitation, Feyre answers simply that people needed help and then heads off for a flying lesson with Azriel.
A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 41
The High Lords finally agree on a date for their meeting, but settling on a location takes much longer. The Spring Court never responds. Eventually, the High Lords agree on the Dawn Court, which sits close enough to the center of the land and whose High Lord, Thesan, is on reasonably good terms with Rhysand.
The night before the meeting, the Inner Circle sits down together to go over everything they know about Thesan’s palace, including how to get out if things go wrong. Meanwhile, Amren finds a promising passage in the Book that might help fix the wall, and she keeps pushing Nesta through their training sessions.
The morning of the meeting, Feyre puts on her refashioned Starfall gown and a crown she picked herself from a secret vault Rhysand had shown her the night before. The vault holds generations of accumulated family wealth, and Rhysand tells her all of it is hers to do with as she pleases. Feyre chooses a silver and diamond crown shaped like stars and lunar phases.
Right as everyone is ready to leave, Nesta walks downstairs dressed up and announces she’s coming along.
