A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 14

Feyre returns to Velaris with Mor, Cassian, Azriel, and Lucien. The sound of children laughing in the streets surprises Lucien. Amren emerges to size him up, and Feyre introduces Lucien by his first name alone because he wants nothing to do with his family name.

Then Rhysand appears, and Feyre falls apart at the sight of him. He carries her upstairs and sends everyone away. Once they’re alone, they fill each other in. Feyre tells Rhysand she was drugged with faebane by Hybern commanders, which stripped her of her powers, and that she killed them.

Rhysand tells Feyre that her actions in the Spring Court had the intended effect. Tamlin’s people began turning against him, abandoning the Tithe and talking openly about revolting. Rhysand also tells Feyre that Ianthe is holed up in her temple after damaging her hand and that Jurian has returned to Hybern.

Feyre learns that Rhysand had been near the human queens’ palace on the continent, investigating why their enemies had gone quiet since the attack. While there, Rhysand felt the mating bond come back to life and sent the others to get Feyre because they could reach her faster.

After catching up, Feyre and Rhysand sleep together. They hold each other and promise they’ll never be apart again.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 15

Feyre and Rhysand come downstairs to meet Lucien in the sitting room. Rhysand explains that he’d loved Feyre long before she felt the same and had been willing to step back if she had found happiness with Tamlin. Rhysand warns Lucien bluntly to show Feyre respect. Lucien eventually concedes that there’s more to the story than he understood.

Afterward, Feyre finds Nesta in the library, as guarded and dismissive as ever. Nesta makes it clear that she has no particular feelings about her new immortal life, but she flags a more pressing issue. Elain has completely fallen apart and hasn’t been eating, sleeping, or leaving her room.

When Feyre goes to Elain, she finds her sitting alone by a window, barely present. Elain says almost nothing except that she wants to go home, and she keeps turning the engagement ring on her finger. Feyre is struck by the weight of what her sisters gave up because of the choices Feyre made.

Then Lucien appears in the doorway. He’s heard everything, and seeing Elain in that state leaves Lucien devastated.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 16

Rhysand gets Lucien settled into a guest suite at the House of Wind, and Feyre sets the terms. Lucien isn’t a prisoner, but he cannot approach Elain or Nesta without permission, and the house is warded well enough to prevent Lucien from slipping away undetected.

Afterward, the Inner Circle meets at Amren’s loft to assess the situation. Rhysand explains that Hybern’s people aren’t simply being dragged into war. Centuries of isolation have left the people of Hybern convinced that life before the Treaty was better, and their king has spent generations feeding that belief. They fight to reclaim something they see as rightfully theirs, which makes them far more dangerous than a reluctant army would be.

The more pressing problem is the three continental territories. If Vallahan, Montesere, and Rask send armies to support Hybern, the Night Court cannot win. To keep that from happening, Rhysand and Azriel have been feeding those territories a mix of truth and lies to set them against each other. As long as the three territories watch their own borders, they won’t be watching Prythian.

The group also addresses the problem of the wall. Hybern appears to be targeting existing weak points rather than destroying the wall through the Cauldron, which the group suspects may not be at full strength anymore. Amren is searching for a way to patch those cracks before Hybern can use them. Feyre wonders whether her magic, being a blend of so many courts, might be enough to help seal the cracks.

When the question of Feyre’s sisters comes up, Feyre agrees to ask them to get involved but insists it must be their choice. Rhysand ends the meeting by announcing that invitations are going out to every High Lord in Prythian. In two weeks, the Inner Circle will find out who is willing to stand with them.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 17

Feyre and Cassian fly to the House of Wind. Along the way, Feyre asks whether Cassian would be willing to involve Nesta in efforts to repair the wall. Cassian says yes, partly because he believes Nesta is wearing herself down by staying isolated. He also admits that he thinks Nesta will never forgive him for failing to protect her and Elain in Hybern, but he finds himself unable to keep his distance from Nesta anyway.

At dinner, everyone is caught off guard when Nesta shows up. Mor eases the tension by making a fuss over Nesta’s dress, which keeps things from turning hostile. The real turning point is the exchange between Nesta and Amren, who tells Nesta they have something in common. Neither of them ever fit the life they were pushed into, and when Nesta’s power breaks loose, the world will know it.

When the conversation turns to the upcoming High Lords meeting, Lucien warns that his father could align with Hybern if Beron sees a chance to regain his power by targeting Feyre. Lucien urges them to learn what Beron and Eris already know before committing to any strategy. Rhysand takes the advice seriously and arranges a meeting between Lucien and Azriel for the following day. Rhysand hints that a separate meeting needs to happen soon.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 18

The Inner Circle debates seeking military support from the Court of Nightmares, specifically the Darkbringer legion commanded by Keir, Mor’s father. Rhysand wants to move forward with a visit in two days. Mor objects, certain her father will refuse, and when Mor tries to get Azriel to back her up, he stays out of it.

Out of nowhere, Feyre announces that she wants to learn to fly. Azriel offers to teach her, noting that the challenge is different for adults than for those who learned young, something Azriel understands from his own painful history.

Amren then suggests that she and Nesta join the group at the Hewn City so Nesta can work with her Cauldron-born abilities among powerful objects. Nesta agrees on one condition. She wants the group to commit to killing both the King of Hybern and the human queens before the war ends.

Feyre then asks Nesta to share what happened to her in Hybern when they meet the other High Lords. Nesta refuses flat out, calls it whoring her story around, and storms out of the room.

Later, Feyre and Rhysand take a long walk through Velaris on their own. Feyre admits she made a mistake asking Nesta something so personal in front of everyone. They talk through how to handle disagreements between them going forward, settling on honesty in private while presenting a united front in public. They also agree to observe Lucien over the next two weeks before deciding how much to involve him. Then Feyre and Rhysand both promise to fight the war together as equals.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 19

Feyre arrives at the House of Wind for a training session with Cassian, who wastes no time confronting her about the decision to hide her status as High Lady before the Hybern mission. He tells her that the information would’ve changed everything because, as High Lady, Feyre’s safety becomes a responsibility shared by the whole inner circle, not something that falls to Rhysand alone. He also warns her that Rhysand has always had a tendency to absorb every burden himself and will almost certainly do the same when the war with Hybern reaches its worst.

The conversation gets derailed when Nesta shows up, and she and Cassian immediately start needling each other. Feyre reaches out to Rhysand through their bond, hoping for a rescue, but he’s tied up in a meeting and sends Azriel instead. Azriel swoops in and carries Feyre off to a mountain lake under the excuse of starting their lesson early.

There, Azriel has Feyre practice summoning Illyrian wings. Feyre manages to produce them but quickly discovers how physically demanding the wings are. The weight is significant, the muscle groups involved are unfamiliar, and even basic control proves difficult. Azriel tells her that actual flight can wait and that, for now, she’ll focus on the fundamentals of spreading and folding the wings until her body can handle more.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 20

Feyre and Rhysand descend beneath the House of Wind to an enormous underground library, where Clotho, a mute priestess, meets them with research materials. Rhysand explains that the library serves as a refuge for traumatized priestesses, a place where the priestesses live and work on their own terms.

Over the next two hours, Feyre and Rhysand comb old texts about the wall between the human and faerie worlds. They find that the wall was never meant to be permanent. It was a temporary measure while both sides worked out how to coexist, and people simply forgot its original purpose over time.

Afterward, Rhysand admits that even a united alliance of all seven courts may not be enough to defeat the King of Hybern. He raises the possibility of challenging the king directly himself, which would almost certainly cost him everything. Feyre dismisses the idea immediately and refuses to entertain it.

Instead, Feyre proposes seeking out the Bone Carver, a powerful ancient being imprisoned for ages and desperate to return to his own world. Offer him that, and he might fight for them.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 21

Feyre and Rhysand split up to handle separate tasks. Rhysand goes to find Cassian, who will escort Feyre to the Prison the next morning so she can visit the Carver. Feyre heads off to check on Nesta and Amren, who are deep into their first training session together. Amren is teaching Nesta to shield herself from outside powers and mental intrusion, something Feyre recognizes as critical preparation before Nesta joins the group at the Court of Nightmares.

Curious about the Prison and its inmates, Feyre tries to fish for information from Amren, but Amren shuts her down and sends her away. That evening, Feyre, Rhys, Cassian, and Mor have dinner together. Mor is tense and quiet throughout the meal, dreading the upcoming visit to the Court of Nightmares. She warns Rhysand to think carefully before agreeing to any deal Keir might offer, and Rhys’s non-answer clearly frustrates her.

That night, Feyre has a nightmare set Under the Mountain. In the dream, her sisters are tortured in the same ways Clare Beddor was, and Feyre watches helplessly as Rhysand walks away with Amarantha, unable to stop any of it. She wakes up panicked and on the verge of being sick, and Rhysand talks her back to herself. Once Feyre steadies herself, she holds onto him and resolves that she’ll never let anyone hurt him or her sisters again.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 22

Feyre opens up to Rhysand about her nightmares before they leave for the Prison, and he listens without trying to fix anything or push her further. It helps. Then they winnow to the Prison with Cassian, and Rhysand warns Feyre and Cassian that communication through the bond won’t work inside and that they need to stay close to each other. Then he leaves.

On the hike up, Cassian fills Feyre in on the Bone Carver, an old god from before the High Fae ever came to Prythian. Releasing the Bone Carver without serious controls in place would be just as dangerous as facing Hybern.

Inside the cell, the Carver has taken the form of a child with Rhys’s coloring and Feyre’s mouth, and Feyre realizes she’s looking at a possible future son. It’s a lot to absorb in the middle of a negotiation.

The Carver isn’t interested in getting down to business quickly. He turns his attention to Cassian and makes pointed, cryptic comments about Nesta, saying she took something from the Cauldron and came out changed into something ancient and powerful. Cassian goes pale and can barely breathe. Feyre cuts off the conversation before the Carver can say more.

Feyre tells the Carver they have the Book of Breathings, which contains spells able to send beings like the Carver back to where they came from. That gets the Carver’s attention immediately.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 23

Feyre and Cassian are hoping to recruit the Carver for the war against Hybern. He turns them down flat. He has no interest in leaving his cell, and the reason he gives is surprisingly candid. The Carver chose to be there. His siblings, the Weaver, whom he knows as Stryga, and a being called Koschei, are ancient death-gods far stronger than he ever was, and staying locked away in an obscure prison is the safest way he knows to avoid their notice.

As Feyre and Cassian head for the door, the Carver calls them back and makes an offer. He wants the Ouroboros, an old and powerful mirror that belongs to Keir of the Hewn City, where Feyre and Cassian are already headed that night. They tell the Carver they’ll look into it and leave without committing either way.

Once Feyre and Cassian are outside, the conversation turns to Nesta. The Carver’s reaction to her has them wondering whether Nesta’s power has something to do with death. Cassian admits he’d been hoping to find out. He says Nesta’s power wouldn’t frighten him, though he worries about what carrying that power might cost her. Rhysand arrives shortly afterward to winnow Feyre and Cassian back to Velaris before the night’s meeting with Keir.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 24

Feyre returns from meeting the Carver and goes to the House of Wind before the group leaves for the Hewn City. She finds Elain at the library window, murmuring in strange, disconnected fragments. Nesta has been watching over Elain alone, and Elain has barely been eating.

Lucien wanders in, breaking the rules about keeping him away from Elain. Feyre slips into his mind and finds only genuine worry for his mate, nothing calculated or deceptive. Lucien and Elain exchange a few tense words. Elain tells Lucien who he is to her, confronts him about his role in what happened, and reminds him that she was days away from marrying someone else.

On his way out, Lucien suggests that Elain needs fresh air and a change of scenery. Feyre takes that to heart and moves both sisters and Lucien down to the town house. The transition goes poorly. Rhysand flies Nesta so fast that she ends up violently ill, and when Nesta storms inside, her eyes briefly burn with something cold and unnatural that nobody can name. Feyre concludes it’s death, something Nesta pulled from the Cauldron itself.

Later, as Feyre and Rhysand dress for the Court of Nightmares, Feyre sits with the guilt of having entered Lucien’s mind without his knowledge.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 25

Feyre and Rhysand arrive at the Court of Nightmares alongside Nesta, Amren, Mor, and Azriel. The court has only prepared one throne, so Rhysand seats Feyre on it and perches on the arm beside her, then orders the entire court to bow. When some members of the court reach out with their power to test Feyre, she magically seizes hold of that power and forces its wielders into submission, rattling the room badly enough that one person flees, another faints, and a third collapses against the person next to them.

Rhysand sends Amren and Nesta off to practice with the court’s magical trove, then pulls Keir into a private council meeting to push for military support against Hybern. Keir cuts straight to it and acknowledges that Rhysand wants his Darkbringer army. He claims a kind of sympathy with Hybern’s cause and uses that sympathy as leverage, then goes too far by suggesting Feyre could factor into his price. Rhysand responds with a cold, measured threat that makes clear the ancestral bargain between their bloodlines doesn’t guarantee Keir’s life.

Rather than let the negotiation fall apart, Rhysand reveals he came prepared with something of his own. He calls for someone to be brought in, and Mor goes pale with dread as Eris, the heir to the Autumn Court, walks through the door.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 26

Rhysand surprises the group by revealing that the empty seat was reserved for Eris, who hasn’t set foot in the Court of Nightmares in five centuries. Mor is clearly hurt that Rhysand didn’t warn her.

The reason for Eris’s presence soon becomes clear. Eris is there to offer Keir a formal alliance with Autumn in exchange for military support against Hybern. Keir refuses unless Rhysand meets his demands. Keir wants his people out of the mountain, and he wants access to Velaris for himself and his court. Mor is devastated, but Rhysand agrees under limited conditions.

Feyre then demands the Ouroboros mirror, which Keir has been holding. He agrees to hand it over with a warning attached. According to Keir, anyone who has ever tried to claim the mirror by looking into it has lost their mind or been permanently broken. Keir leaves, satisfied with what he’s won.

Alone with the group, Eris explains his side of things. He already knew about Feyre’s powers but kept quiet, figuring Feyre was their best shot at stopping Hybern. In exchange for his silence and his influence over Beron, Eris wants their backing when he eventually moves to take the Autumn throne. Before he leaves, he drops a cryptic comment to Mor about their broken betrothal, implying that he ended the engagement deliberately to set her free. Mor tells him to get out.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 27

The group returns to Velaris after their visit to Hewn City, and the tension follows them home. Mor confronts Rhys, furious that he agreed to give Keir access to their city. Rhysand tells Mor that he has already arranged for local businesses to refuse service to Keir and his court and turn them away. Amren intervenes before the argument escalates, and Feyre urges everyone to hold it together for the sake of the war effort.

The conversation then turns to the Bone Carver. Amren reveals that the only way to free him from the Prison is to bind him into a Fae body, which is exactly what Amren did to escape. She gave up her divine nature to do it, and she warns that the Carver would have to do the same. He’s unlikely to agree willingly.

Elain wanders downstairs and shares a series of cryptic visions, including one about a person the world believes is dead but who’s actually still alive. Azriel listens, then winnows away without a word.

After the others leave, Lucien suggests that a healer examine Elain, and Feyre reaches out to Madja to come the following morning.

Later, Rhysand holds Feyre in the dark. He admits that he made the wrong call with Keir and that Rhysand tends to shoulder the hardest decisions alone.
