A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 42

Nesta says she wants to share her firsthand account of what happened. Feyre urges her to stay and focus on training, but Nesta refuses. She tells them her reason is the same as Feyre’s. Helping the humans beyond the wall is the right thing to do, especially because they have no one else fighting for them.

Since Feyre is now High Lady and no longer serves as emissary to the human world, Rhysand offers the role to Nesta. She accepts, though on a trial basis and only if she’s properly compensated. The mood lightens, and the group begins placing bets on how quickly a fight will break out at the meeting they’re about to attend.

Before the group leaves, Azriel scouts ahead and signals that it’s safe. As the others prepare to depart, Cassian approaches Nesta. They exchange sharp words, but the tension between them is more complicated than hostile. He takes her hand and promises to come find her next time.

The group arrives at the Dawn Court, a magnificent palace built into a mountain belonging to High Lord Thesan. An attendant leads them up an open-air tower to a chamber where three High Lords already wait: Helion of Day, Kallias of Winter, and Thesan of Dawn. The High Lords of Autumn, Summer, and Spring have yet to arrive.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 43

Mor spots Kallias’s wife, Viviane, among the attendants, and the two share a tearful, laughing reunion, clearly resuming a friendship that had been on hold for a very long time. As Mor and Viviane catch up in earnest, Viviane reveals that she and Kallias are now mated as well as married.

Then Helion cuts through the pleasantries, asking whether Tamlin knows that Feyre is Rhysand’s mate and a High Lady. He also zeroes in on Nesta, wanting to know who she is. Feyre introduces Nesta as an emissary to the human lands, but when the High Lords push for more, Feyre tells them plainly that Hybern threw Nesta into the Cauldron and made her Fae. Feyre then directly accuses Tamlin and Ianthe of betraying Prythian and Feyre’s family to Hybern.

Later, Tarquin arrives from the Summer Court, followed by Beron from the Autumn Court, who enters with his wife and sons. Eris is among them, and the sight of him clearly affects Mor, though she keeps her composure.

Then Thesan calls the meeting to order and asks Rhysand to explain why he pushed for it. Rhysand barely gets started before Tamlin winnows into the chamber without warning.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 44

Tamlin arrives at the High Lords’ summit and is given a seat. His attention goes straight to Feyre and Rhysand, and it’s clear that he knows what Feyre did to the Spring Court. Hostilities follow, and Tamlin tears into Feyre in front of everyone, aiming to make her look corrupt so the other High Lords won’t trust the Night Court.

Kallias then raises something heavier. Two dozen Winter Court children were killed Under the Mountain on Amarantha’s orders, and he wants to know what role Rhysand played.

Rhysand doesn’t deflect. He admits that he was powerless at the time because Amarantha had kept him locked away in her chambers, and by the time he learned what had happened to the children, it was already done. He also reveals that he talked Amarantha out of killing Kallias after the Winter Court’s rebellion, something Kallias never knew. Feyre says she believes Rhysand, and Rhysand swears on Feyre’s life that his account is true.

Tamlin then makes his actual point. He says he’s there to fight against Hybern, and he drops documents detailing Hybern’s troop movements and resources. The other High Lords aren’t convinced, and Helion questions whether Tamlin’s information can be trusted.

The argument spirals until Rhysand shuts it down. Mid-sentence, Tamlin loses the ability to speak. The room goes quiet, and the other High Lords are reminded just how much farther Rhysand’s power extends than their own.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 45

Rhysand tells the High Lords that if he and Feyre were working with Hybern, he would’ve seized control of the High Lords’ minds rather than waste time on diplomacy. Tarquin acknowledges that Rhysand’s group showed up to defend Adriata when no one else did and rescinds the blood rubies as a gesture of good faith. Rhysand releases his hold on Tamlin and says he believes Tamlin will fight for Prythian.

When Eris makes a crude comment about Mor, Azriel tackles him, seals them inside a shield, and chokes him until Feyre intervenes. Feyre leads Azriel back to his seat and warns Eris that she won’t stop Azriel a second time. To his father’s shock, Eris apologizes to Mor.

Thesan then introduces Nuan, an alchemist and tinkerer from his court who used faebane samples that Lucien secretly sent her to develop a powder that protects against faebane’s power-nullifying effects. Beron refuses to take it, but Rhysand commits his court and armies to using the powder without hesitation.

Tamlin breaks his silence to accuse Feyre of gutting his court and leaving his people exposed to Hybern. Helion suggests evacuation, and Tarquin offers to take in Tamlin’s people. When the conversation turns to the humans below the wall, Beron refuses to treat their safety as anyone’s concern. Feyre calls Beron a coward. Beron retaliates by throwing Clare Beddor’s death in Feyre’s face and mocking Rhysand’s time under Amarantha. Feyre loses her temper and blasts Beron with fire.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 46

Feyre loses control and traps Beron in a bubble of water, nearly drowning him. Rhysand steps in and pulls her back, pointing out that killing Beron would only hand power to Eris, who would be worse. Feyre lets Beron go, and Rhysand shields everyone from the backlash.

The other High Lords are shaken. Helion realizes that Feyre has absorbed a fragment of his power, and the room turns tense. Rhysand tells everyone he made Feyre High Lady because he loves her. When Beron hurls an insult at Feyre, Rhysand obliterates his chair and drives his power into him. Beron storms out, declaring the meeting finished and saying he hopes Hybern destroys them all.

Nesta stops Beron. She delivers a raw, unscripted speech, urging the High Lords to fight Hybern and stand up for both Fae and human lives. Nesta claims that the Cauldron showed her Hybern’s plans firsthand. Beron offers nothing more than a vague “I shall consider it” before he and his family vanish.

With the alliance teetering, Feyre faces the remaining High Lords and tells them that the power she carries is hers, and she plans to use it to destroy Hybern. Six of the seven courts rise to stand with Feyre.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 47

The meeting ends without real progress. Nobody is willing to share military numbers in front of Tamlin, and the bickering drags into evening before Thesan offers rooms for the night. Everyone stays, Tamlin included, though he leaves without a word to Rhysand or Feyre.

Once the other High Lords have gone, Rhysand asks Kallias about his forces. Kallias admits Amarantha left them with very little, and Rhysand acknowledges that his Illyrian legions and Darkbringers won’t be enough on their own. When Helion stops by later, he’s more forthcoming than he was during the meeting, and the group works out a rough strategy to push south and camp near the Summer Court border.

The conversation turns to Beron. Helion tells Feyre he once saved the Lady of Autumn by tearing apart Hybern’s beasts with his bare hands. Feyre pieces together that the two had a long affair afterward, one Beron eventually discovered and brutally ended. She tells Rhysand her conclusion that Helion is almost certainly Lucien’s biological father. That theory explains Lucien’s different coloring and the harsh treatment he endured from Beron and his brothers his whole life.

Nesta then pulls Feyre aside, insisting something is wrong, and that they need to leave. Rhysand sends Azriel and Cassian to search the palace and surrounding lands, but they return empty-handed. They stay the night anyway.

Later, Feyre tells Rhysand she can’t be intimate knowing Tamlin is somewhere in the same building. Rhysand doesn’t push back. He just holds her.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 48

The group eats breakfast before heading back to the summit. Nesta is quiet and pale, but no one asks her about it. When the meeting resumes, Helion cuts straight to Tamlin’s military numbers and suggests that Tamlin and Tarquin could anchor the front line while the northern courts move in with their larger forces. Tamlin fires back and blames Feyre for gutting his army’s morale.

Then Nesta clutches her chest and staggers. Mor catches her before she falls into the reflection pool, and Nesta vomits. Helion and Thesan both rush over to examine her but find nothing physically wrong. Nesta tells them that the problem isn’t with her but with the Cauldron.

Rhysand signals Azriel and Cassian toward the windows to investigate, and moments later, the whole mountain shakes. Rhysand throws himself over Feyre and nearly winnows them out before the tremor stops. Screaming rises from the valley below.

A moment later, Rhysand gets to his feet and sends his magic south to probe what happened. When he turns back to the group, he’s clearly shaken. He tells them that the King of Hybern has just used the Cauldron to bring down the Wall and that it has fallen across all of Prythian and the continent. They were too late.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 49

The group learns that Nesta’s bond with the Cauldron lets her sense when the Cauldron stirs, which is exactly why the King of Hybern is hunting her.

But the wall has already fallen, and they’re too late to stop it. The High Lords leave the Dawn Court with their commitments made. Thesan will send faebane antidote and ready his Peregryns. Kallias and Helion promise their armies, and Tarquin plans to march his soldiers on land. Tamlin slips out without pledging anything, and Beron never responds.

Back in Velaris, the group debates what to do about the humans at Nesta and Elain’s old estate. Rhysand offers to move them, but Nesta thinks they won’t cooperate. Elain suggests bringing them to her former fiancé’s family estate instead. Graysen’s father has stone walls, escape tunnels, supplies, and ash wood weapons. Elain volunteers to go herself and talk Graysen into opening his gates to refugees and letting the group set protective wards around the property.

Before everyone splits off, Cassian pulls Nesta aside and hands her one of his daggers. He walks her through where to aim and how to break a hold if someone grabs her, keeping his voice low and serious the whole time.

Feyre then finds Amren and tells her she wants to make a second bargain with the creature imprisoned beneath the library, whom Amren says is named Bryaxis. She asks Amren to come with her to examine the wards holding Bryaxis there and help Feyre understand what she’s dealing with.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 50

Feyre and Amren descend to the lowest level of the library to find Bryaxis. Feyre strikes a deal with Bryaxis, offering its freedom in exchange for fighting alongside them in the war against Hybern. Bryaxis agrees, but its only condition is a window so it can see the sun, moon, and stars, along with free rein to prey on the enemy’s terror during battle. Amren will dismantle the wards that keep Bryaxis contained, but only when Feyre calls for it.

Back at the town house, the group gathers to winnow to the Illyrian war camp. Feyre tells Rhysand about the bargain, and he takes it well, even joking about how Cassian will react to their new recruit. Feyre writes off the Carver as not worth the trouble and decides Bryaxis will be enough. The others winnow away in turns until Feyre and Rhysand are the last ones left. They take a quiet moment to look around the town house, both wondering whether they’ll ever come back to it, before Rhysand winnows them off to war.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Part 3: High Lady

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 51

Feyre and her companions arrive at an Illyrian war camp, where Rhysand meets with the assembled lords, including Devlon, to issue orders about the coming battle. Things grow tense when Devlon notices Nesta and questions what kind of being Nesta is. Nesta declares herself a witch, which clearly unsettles the lords. Devlon demands that she be kept away from the women and children in camp. Feyre pulls her sisters into the war tent to defuse the situation.

Inside, Mor glamours Elain to pass as human before the group’s visit to Graysen’s estate. Elain is nervous but agrees to hold back her seer visions while the group is there.

The group then travels to the human lands and arrives at Graysen’s heavily fortified estate. With a wall of armed guards and drawn arrows in front of the group, Elain steps forward and asks the guards to tell Graysen that his betrothed has come seeking shelter.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 52

The group waits to be received. Instead of letting them inside, the guards bring them to a guardhouse, where Feyre struggles quietly with the cramped space while they wait.

When Graysen and his father, Lord Nolan, finally appear, Elain urges them to shelter human refugees now that the wall is down. Nesta backs her up with a blunt account of how she was forcibly turned Fae and gives them a quick rundown of Hybern’s invasion. Nolan isn’t buying any of it and accuses them all of using faerie tricks to manipulate him.

Feyre steps up and introduces herself as High Lady of the Night Court along with the rest of her companions. Graysen tells Elain he doesn’t believe her, and Nolan reveals he already knows she was the first of the sisters to be turned and that she’s bonded to a High Lord’s son. When Rhysand asks where Nolan got that information, Jurian walks through the door and owns up to it.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 53

Jurian arrives alone and wastes no time making a stunning admission. He’s been working against Hybern the entire time. He explains that the queens are corrupt and self-serving. The one queen among them with any real integrity tried to help Feyre in secret, and when the other queens found out, they handed her over to the Attor as punishment.

That admission leads to an even bigger revelation. Hybern brought Jurian back believing that centuries of imprisonment had broken his mind, and Jurian let Hybern keep believing it so he could stay close to the enemy and learn its weaknesses. He’s stung that neither Mor nor Rhysand ever looked past the surface, especially Mor, who once knew him well enough to fight alongside him.

Jurian’s public hunt for Miryam and Drakon was part of the same deception. Tracking Miryam and Drakon openly was the only way to warn them without tipping off Hybern. What Jurian actually wants is to bring their army into the fight, and he admits, with some rawness, that he owes Miryam and Drakon an apology above all else.

Rhysand confirms that Miryam and Drakon have already gone into hiding, and Jurian urges the group to track them down without delay. He also tells them that Tamlin went directly back to Hybern after their meeting that morning and reported everything. Hybern is now planning a full land assault on the Summer Court the following day.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 54

Jurian gives the group details of the planned attack, and Azriel leaves immediately to warn Cassian and reposition the troops.

Then Jurian explains what happened to Vassa. She suspected Jurian from the beginning and tried to push the other queens to take the threat seriously, but they were too dazzled by the Cauldron to listen. Since killing Vassa would’ve caused political problems, Hybern arranged for a death-lord to curse and abduct her, then told everyone she had simply fallen ill.

Meanwhile, Elain tries to repair things with Graysen, but he ends the engagement and coldly rejects her. Nesta steps forward, slaps him, tells him he was never good enough for her sister, and walks Elain out of the room.

Feyre and Rhysand negotiate with the lords and offer magical wards in exchange for opening their gates to human refugees. Jurian backs the deal with a threat to send Hybern their way if they refuse, and the lords agree.

Before he leaves, Jurian outlines his next steps. He plans to return to Hybern’s camp, then head to the continent to stir up conflict among the queens and keep them too occupied to join the war. He leaves Cassian a tactical tip for the next battle and tells Feyre that her killing of Dagdan and Brannagh was what made him trust her in the first place.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 55

The Illyrian army has made camp at the northern border of the Winter Court, waiting for the battle ahead. Back in their tent, Feyre and Mor talk briefly about Jurian and whether he might actually be more decent than either of them had assumed. Mor then asks about Elain, and Feyre answers that Elain isn’t okay.

Elain spent the night in her tent, quietly crying after Graysen rejected her. Feyre thought about going after Graysen but held back. The rejection marks a painful turning point for Elain, the last real tie she had to her old human world now severed.

Mor heads off to sleep, and Feyre barely rests. Before dawn, she follows the pull of the mating bond and finds Rhysand alone on an icy rock ledge, watching the night sky fade. They stand together without much need for words as Rhysand opens up about the burden of sending soldiers into battle and how it never stops weighing on him. Rhysand tells Feyre how much it means to have her beside him. She takes his hand and presses it to her heart. They share one last kiss, and the camp slowly stirs to life around them as morning comes.
