Queen of Shadows Part 1: Lady of Shadows

Queen of Shadows Chapter 1

Dorian is trapped in some kind of inner darkness. An ancient, malevolent presence keeps him there, circling just outside a barrier Dorian can no longer hold together. He has lost most of his sense of self. His own name was the first thing he forgot, and then he forgot the names of the people who mattered to him.

The only thing that breaks through the blackness is a single traumatic memory that returns again and again. It takes place in an opulent chamber where a powerful man ordered the execution of a woman Dorian loved. He can’t stop reliving it. He knows he did nothing to stop the execution, and part of him believes that disqualifies him from being the kind of person worth saving. The woman’s last words to Dorian were that she was never meant to love him.

In the waking world, Dorian is still functioning, but only because that same man compels him to. He moves and speaks like something hollow, and the people around him notice nothing. He resents them for it.

The barrier between Dorian and the waiting creature is failing. He knows he should fight, but he has reached a point where he’s not sure he wants to.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 2

After months away, Aelin Galathynius returns to Rifthold and heads straight for the Vaults, a seedy underground den packed with criminals and lowlifes. She’s traveling in disguise with her golden hair dyed darker, knowing that once word gets out that Aelin never completed her mission in Wendlyn, people will soon come looking for her.

Aelin has two reasons for being at the Vaults. She wants to get a read on what has changed in Rifthold while she was gone and to spy on Arobynn Hamel, her former master and the most dangerous assassin in the city, as he holds a private meeting in one of the back booths. While Aelin waits at the bar, a wiry assassin named Tern approaches her and points her toward Arobynn’s location.

Before Aelin can reach Arobynn, however, the meeting breaks up. The client storms off, and the moment Aelin catches a glimpse of the man, she knows exactly who he is. Despite his plain clothes and missing sword, she recognizes his build and the way he moves. It’s Chaol Westfall, the Captain of the Guard. She drops into a nearby chair and keeps her head down as Chaol scans the room.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 3

Aelin sees Chaol meeting privately with Arobynn. She hangs back so Chaol won’t recognize her, and he leaves without realizing Aelin was there.

After Chaol leaves, Aelin makes her way over to Arobynn, and they sit down together. He tells her that word has already spread about what she did to the Valg princes in Wendlyn, and she shrugs it off. Then he gets to what actually matters. Someone has arrested her cousin Aedion for treason and accused him of plotting with Rifthold rebels to restore Aelin to the throne. The crown plans to execute him in three days at the prince’s upcoming birthday, and Arobynn believes the whole thing is a deliberate trap designed to draw Aelin out.

Arobynn offers his resources but wants something in return. He’s been watching the king’s new guard and suspects that some of the commanders aren’t quite human. He wants to know what they are and wants Aelin to bring one of the creatures to him alive. Aelin gives him a partial answer about the Valg and confirms that fire works against them, keeping the rest to herself. She agrees to capture one, but only after Aedion is safe.

Before they part, Arobynn tells Aelin that she might find the person she’s looking for in the southeastern tunnels. Aelin is still turning that over when four of the king’s soldiers appear at the top of the stairs, and she shifts her focus to the fight ahead.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 4

Aedion is in a prison cell, and he knows he’s running out of time. Three weeks earlier, during the violent scene where Sorscha died, he took a wound to his ribs and deliberately kept it from the guards. He wanted to die from the injury before the king could put him on display and use his execution to draw Aelin into a trap. The plan made sense to him. What he didn’t anticipate was how much the wound would hurt.

Around the guards, Aedion has been putting on an act, letting them believe he’s finally given up and gone quiet. The guards haven’t noticed that he’s barely standing anymore. Aedion’s Fae heritage has been fighting the infection on its own, but it’s a losing battle. Now he lies on his rotting hay pallet and endures each wave of fever and pain, waiting. He’s made his peace with dying and finds comfort in the idea that he’ll die before Aelin can walk into the trap the king set for her.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 5

Aelin is running through the slums with twenty men on her tail after tearing through the Vaults and killing its owner, a man connected to the people who murdered Sam. She suspects Arobynn orchestrated the whole night as a test.

With the guards closing in, Aelin climbs a stack of crates, pulls herself through a window into an apartment, and reaches the roof. Spotting a sewer grate in the alley below, she slides down a drainpipe and disappears underground just before the guards locate her.

Following a hint Arobynn gave her earlier, she heads southeast through the tunnels and reaches a four-way intersection. One passage is completely dark in a way that feels wrong, and a stone Aelin throws into it lands without a sound.

The hooded woman Aelin noticed at the Vaults appears behind her and steers her away from the passage, warning that the guards will soon search the sewers.

Aelin goes with the woman, memorizing the route. The woman confirms that the men chasing Aelin have no connection to Chaol. When they reach another tunnel with that same strange darkness and the woman turns her back on the stone walkway, Aelin puts a knife to the woman’s throat.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 6

Aelin catches the woman off guard in a tunnel with a knife to her throat, giving the woman one sentence to make a case for her life. The woman says that Chaol left the castle weeks ago to side with the rebels, and that the prince is still at the castle but unharmed.

Reluctantly, Aelin stands down, though the two women immediately fall into a prickly back-and-forth. The rebel refuses to give her name, and Aelin challenges the woman’s hostility, defending her past actions before demanding to be taken to Chaol.

Before long, Chaol stumbles out of the darkness with a group of companions, half-carrying an injured man and clearly racing against the clock to reach a ship in time. Chaol spots Aelin across the tunnel. Neither of them speaks.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 7

Aelin finds Chaol emerging from the tunnels with wounded rebels and prisoners he rescued from a Valg nest. She learns he’s been leading a resistance group in Rifthold, running missions to save magic-wielders from the king’s Valg-controlled guards.

Afterward, as they walk through the slums, Chaol brings Aelin up to speed. Aedion has been captured, a healer named Sorscha was executed, and Dorian revealed his magic to help Chaol escape the castle, only to be left behind. The worst of it is that Dorian is now wearing a Wyrdstone collar, which means a Valg demon has taken root inside him.

The conversation falls apart from there. Aelin is furious that Chaol left Dorian and ran. Chaol is angry that she returned without allies or an army, and he refuses to tell her what he knows about freeing magic because he fears what she’d do with that knowledge. She argues that her fire may be the only thing with any chance of reaching Dorian. They split on bad terms.

Later, Nesryn Faliq urges Chaol to separate his emotions from the situation, and he begins to wonder whether he made the wrong call by shutting Aelin out.

By morning, Aelin has made up her mind. She writes to Arobynn and accepts his offer, trading a future favor involving a Valg demon for his help freeing Aedion.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 8

Manon Blackbeak meets with Duke Perrington to receive her next assignment. Duke Perrington wants the Ironteeth to scout the wild men of the Fangs and return with intelligence on their camps and movements, with explicit instructions to avoid any confrontation. On her way out, Manon refuses to use Duke Perrington’s title, and the duke laughs it off.

Back at the aerie, Asterin makes no secret of her frustration with being stuck at Morath and doing nothing useful. Manon warns Asterin to keep it together, and when Asterin’s tone turns insubordinate, Manon grabs her by the throat and draws blood. Asterin backs down.

With the sun fully set, Manon leads the Thirteen out into the night. The witches fly far from the mountain stronghold until Manon spots a farmstead near a lake and steers Abraxos toward it, looking for something to hunt.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 9

Aelin receives a package from Arobynn containing her old assassin suit, updated with modifications tailored to Aelin’s fighting style and physical habits. She puts it on just as a carriage pulls up outside.

When Aelin investigates, she finds Lysandra, a courtesan who grew up alongside her under Arobynn’s influence, waiting outside with a young girl named Evangeline and a hired driver. Aelin has previously threatened to kill Lysandra, but hearing Lysandra say “please” gives her pause. In nine years, Aelin has never once heard that word from Lysandra, and it’s enough to make Aelin let her inside.

Lysandra lays out Arobynn’s plan to rescue Aedion, which Aelin privately admits is clever and bold, and warns Aelin that Arobynn is watching her and that his help almost certainly comes with a trap.

As proof of Arobynn’s treachery, Lysandra hands over a sealed letter from Wesley, Arobynn’s former bodyguard. Lysandra explains that she and Wesley had loved each other and that Wesley wrote the letter to expose what Arobynn arranged to have done to Sam and to confess his secret plan to break Aelin out of Endovier before Arobynn had him killed. Aelin is shaken but throws Lysandra out anyway.

Evangeline tells Aelin that Lysandra deliberately scarred Evangeline’s face to get the girl out of Clarisse‘s brothel and took the blame and punishment for it, which cost Lysandra years of additional debt. The revelation changes how Aelin sees everything that just happened, and Aelin stops the carriage from leaving.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 10

Aedion is dying in his cell from an infected wound, and he’s welcomed it. A public execution is only days away, and dying beforehand would deny his captors their spectacle.

Then Dorian walks in alone. Aedion spots the Wyrdstone collar immediately and understands what it means. Throughout the conversation, he deliberately uses Dorian’s name and brings up Sorscha, the woman Dorian loved and who died in the throne room, hoping to reach whatever fragment of Dorian remains conscious inside. The thing deflects each time, but its reactions give it away. Something beneath the collar is still fighting.

Before the thing leaves, it tells Aedion it will enjoy watching him die, but then it pauses in the hallway and orders the guards to fetch a healer after detecting the infection. A healer arrives, forces treatment on Aedion despite his resistance, and Aedion’s quiet plan to die falls apart.

Meanwhile, Dorian is sealed behind a mental wall while the thing moves his body and speaks through his mouth. He’s watched Sorscha’s death replay since it happened, and hearing her name from Aedion sends him into a frenzy against the barrier. The demon reports back to the king, who interprets Aedion’s attempt to die early as a sign that Aelin may be coming to disrupt the execution.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 11

Chaol and Nesryn slip into the Shadow Market, an underground black market along Rifthold’s riverbanks, for a covert meeting with Brullo and Ress, two of Chaol’s former men who still serve inside the palace. Brullo warns them that the new Captain of the Guard has deliberately spread the guards thin, leaving none of Chaol’s loyal men posted near the Great Hall during the upcoming event.

Before the meeting ends, Aelin arrives uninvited after tracking them down herself. She goes straight to Brullo and Ress, ordering them to keep their men away from the southern garden wall and to wear red flowers on their uniforms so they can be identified and spared.

Chaol objects, concerned that Aelin is compromising their inside sources, but Aelin brushes him off. She slips back into the crowd without a word about Dorian’s safety. Only after Aelin disappears into the crowd does Chaol realize that Aelin has guaranteed Brullo and his men will survive whatever she’s planning.

On her way home, Aelin stops at the Royal Bank of Adarlan under a false name to access her accounts. While the bank manager steps out of his office, she takes something from the manager’s desk. The following morning, Aelin wakes alone in her Rifthold apartment, thinks briefly of Rowan, and then receives an urgent summons to the Assassins’ Keep.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 12

Duke Perrington summons Manon, who goes down with her Second, Asterin. The duke wants her to hand over a Blackbeak coven for a breeding experiment with the Valg demons, threatening to kill Abraxos and destroy the Thirteen if she doesn’t deliver within a week. Manon doesn’t agree outright, but she doesn’t refuse either and privately considers which Blackbeak coven she might offer up.

On the way back, Asterin pushes hard against it, insisting witchlings are sacred. Manon, unwilling to show any sign of weakness, demotes her to Third on the spot and replaces her with Sorrel.

Back in her room, Manon finds a servant girl named Elide Lochan cleaning. She sees through the performance almost immediately and realizes Elide is taking stock of her. When it comes out that Elide is Lord Vernon‘s niece, Manon grows suspicious, warns her not to spy, and sends her away. Afterward, she notices Elide had been going through her map.

Manon and Sorrel then head to the aerial blacksmith to look over a new batch of weapons. Manon tells him the blades need to come down in weight since the wyverns are already carrying too much between riders, armor, and supplies. Sorrel takes the opportunity to speak up for Asterin, suggesting the Thirteen are struggling without a clear purpose or routine. Manon doesn’t respond to it.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 13

Aelin returns to the Assassins’ Keep to meet with Arobynn. He opens with pleasantries but gets to the point quickly. He wants to know why she hasn’t captured a Valg demon for him yet. Aelin tells him flatly that it isn’t happening until Aedion is freed, since drawing that kind of attention could put both of them at risk with the king.

Arobynn warns Aelin to follow through on their deal once Aedion is safe, or things will get very uncomfortable for her. He also brings up Chaol’s prior involvement with Nesryn, clearly hoping to rattle Aelin, and mentions that Chaol visited him the night before. Aelin pretends she already knew and walks out.

Back at her apartment, Aelin meets with Lysandra, who is candid with her that for years, Arobynn used her to keep Aelin off balance and competing for his approval. Wesley’s death changed her permanently. She tells Aelin she wants to help bring him down. Aelin apologizes for the years she spent treating Lysandra badly, and Lysandra accepts without drama. They agree to work together, and Lysandra hints that she has an idea that could refine tomorrow’s plan.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 14

Chaol and Nesryn are watching a public execution from a rooftop when Aelin turns up uninvited. Aelin and Chaol spend most of their time arguing. Chaol doesn’t trust Aelin with Dorian’s life and threatens to expose Aedion. Aelin threatens to burn Chaol’s kingdom to the ground, and Nesryn alone keeps the situation from falling apart.

When the guards rush the first execution ahead of schedule, Chaol tells Aelin that destroying one of the three Wyrdstone towers will free magic across the kingdom. This worries Aelin because the king may have already laid magical traps inside the palace, and she lacks the books needed to counter them. Chaol reveals that he took those books when he left the castle, which gives them a fighting chance.

With no time to rethink the plan, Aelin, Chaol, and Nesryn move. Aelin kills the executioner, Nesryn provides cover fire, and Chaol leads his men onto the platform to free the two remaining prisoners.

That night, Aelin tails a Valg patrol to identify which streets will go unwatched during the next day’s mission. The patrol corners her in an alley. She kills every member of the patrol and beheads each body to prevent the Valg from rising again.

Aelin spends the rest of the night studying the books Chaol gave her, then heads out in the morning to go after Aedion.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 15

After two days of recovery, Aedion is well enough to be cleaned up and marched out for his public execution. The guards shave him even after he tries to turn the razor on himself, and by the time the guards dress him and haul him upstairs, he’s too worn out to bait them into killing him early.

Aedion is led into a ballroom decked out for the occasion, where workers have set up a platform for the beheading and placed the Sword of Orynth on display behind it. He notices the heavy guard presence around the room and in the garden beyond and figures the king isn’t being subtle about using his death as a lure for Aelin.

Once the guards chain him to the platform, Aedion notices the stool they’ve given him to sit on and decides it’ll do as a weapon when the time comes, because he still plans to have some say in how he goes out.
