A Court of Frost and Starlight Chapter 1
Feyre wakes to the first snowfall of winter in Velaris, alone in bed because Rhysand has already left without a word. After breakfast, she finds Nuala in the kitchen and learns that the Winter Solstice is only a week away, which gets Feyre thinking about buying gifts for everyone in her life.
Afterward, Feyre heads upstairs and notices how cluttered the bedroom has become with her belongings and Rhysand’s things piled together. The sight leads Feyre to take stock of where everyone is living now. Lucien has taken his own apartment in the city, Nesta has a place across town, and Elain is still down the hall. Even so, Feyre wants to celebrate the Solstice at home with the whole group.
Feyre then turns to a growing pile of correspondence she’s been avoiding for weeks and starts seriously considering hiring a personal secretary. Feyre also realizes she’s been pouring herself into volunteer work around the city since the war ended, though one charity matron recently sent her home and told her to rest for the holiday.
Through their bond, Feyre reaches out to Rhysand. He tells her he’s at Devlon’s camp in the Illyrian Mountains because Cassian and Devlon are at each other’s throats. Rhysand then steps away to deal with the conflict. Feyre turns back to the window and watches the snow.
A Court of Frost and Starlight Chapter 2
Rhysand has traveled to the Illyrian Mountains to back Cassian up in a standoff with Devlon, a camp lord who wants to suspend the girls’ training for Solstice domestic preparations. Cassian has been arguing against the change, but Devlon won’t budge. Rhysand brokers a compromise. The girls train for ninety minutes each morning while the males help with the holiday work.
Cassian then briefs Rhysand on a more serious problem brewing across the clans. Since the war, some Illyrians have come to believe that Rhysand and Cassian used the conflict to settle old scores by placing certain warriors on the most dangerous front lines. Rhysand tells Cassian to find the source of the rumors and deal with it quietly, then orders him home to Velaris for the Solstice.
On his way out, Rhysand mentions that both of Feyre’s sisters will be at the house for the holiday. He and Cassian briefly discuss Nesta, who has cut herself off from everyone and refused every attempt to draw her back. Rhysand tells Cassian to leave the matter alone and focus on giving Feyre a good day, since it’s also her birthday.
Rhysand then admits that he sometimes struggles to trust that his happiness with Feyre is real and fears it will all fall apart. Cassian reminds him that he and Feyre have both paid more than enough for what they have now.
A Court of Frost and Starlight Chapter 3
Cassian waits for Rhysand to leave before flying out of camp, heading deep into the Illyrian mountains. He passes Ramiel, a peak sacred to the Illyrians where the Blood Rite takes place each spring, and thinks briefly about the ritual and what it means for the restless tension in the camps.
From there, Cassian flies south to a desolate, long-abandoned pass where he was born. Standing there, he thinks about his mother, who was cast out and mistreated her whole life and had already died by the time he was strong enough to come back for her. That loss is what pushes Cassian to train the women in the camps so they have a chance at something better than his mother did.
Turning his thoughts toward Velaris, where Rhysand expects him for the Solstice, Cassian heads back to camp with three days left before he has to go.
A Court of Frost and Starlight Chapter 4
Feyre spends the morning wandering the Rainbow, Velaris’s artists’ quarter, picking up Solstice gifts. She stops in front of a crumbled building and is approached by a faerie named Ressina, who tells her that the people who lived there managed to flee before the attack. Ressina then points out a nearby gallery with a sadder story. Its owner, Polina, didn’t survive, and the gallery has been sitting empty ever since. Before they part ways, Ressina mentions that she hosts a weekly painting group at her studio and invites Feyre to join.
Later, Feyre runs into Mor at the Palace of Thread and Jewels. The two of them track down a gift for Amren and debate what to get Cassian and Azriel. On their way out, Mor breaks some news. She and Feyre are heading to the Court of Nightmares that same evening for a traditional Solstice goodwill visit. Feyre isn’t thrilled, but Mor admits the real reason she pushed for tonight is that Eris will be there, and she wants to see firsthand how close Eris and Keir, her father, have become.
A Court of Frost and Starlight Chapter 5
Feyre is lounging in bed when Rhysand gets home, clearly worn out after a long day. She refuses to let Rhysand brush it off and goes to grab him food before they head to a meeting at the Court of Nightmares. Over the meal, they talk about Elain and Lucien’s awkward dynamic, and Rhysand admits he still holds a grudge against Lucien over how Lucien treated Feyre in the past. They wonder whether Lucien should come to the Solstice at all.
Then Feyre mentions she stopped by the Rainbow district and met a local artist named Ressina, who invited her to join a painting group. Feyre is hesitant, feeling guilty about taking time for herself when so much is still going on in the city. Rhysand disagrees and brings up setting up a dedicated space for Feyre to work in, but she’s not sold on any of the options for practical reasons.
The conversation turns into something more personal, and the two share a quiet, intimate moment that starts pulling in a different direction. Mor interrupts with a knock and a reminder that they actually need to leave. Rhysand retreats to the bath, and when Feyre checks the water, she finds it’s ice-cold.
A Court of Frost and Starlight Chapter 6
Mor, Rhysand, and Feyre visit the Hewn City for the Solstice and find that Eris, the eldest son of the Autumn Court’s High Lord, is already there meeting privately with Keir. Eris claims he came only to offer Solstice greetings, but the conversation shifts when he implies that Beron may be looking to expand into the human lands. Feyre immediately objects to the idea, and Eris deflects by suggesting they take it up with Tamlin, since the Spring Court is the only one that actually borders the human lands. Rhysand files that information away, and he, Feyre, and Mor leave.
Throughout the meeting, Mor was barely holding it together. Eris’s presence pulled her back to a memory she couldn’t shake. He’d found her gravely wounded and alone in the Autumn Court woods, refused to let anyone help her, and walked away without a second thought. That history made the whole encounter excruciating, and she left feeling like she hadn’t risen to the moment.
A Court of Frost and Starlight Chapter 7
Rhysand has spent a sleepless night brooding over Eris’s warning about Tamlin and his borders, so he flies up to his study at the House of Wind before dawn to clear his head. Azriel arrives early with intelligence showing that discontent has spread across more Illyrian clans than Rhysand anticipated. They discuss how to handle it and settle on quiet monitoring for now. Rhysand also decides to keep the full picture from Cassian until after the Solstice because he wants Cassian to enjoy the holiday while he still can.
The conversation turns to the human queens, who have remained in their shared palace instead of returning home. Rhysand is wary of direct Night Court involvement, as such involvement could make the Night Court appear to be conquerors rather than allies. They settle on eventually using Lucien as a human emissary alongside Jurian and Vassa.
Azriel admits he hasn’t been keeping tabs on Lucien, and Rhysand informs him that Lucien is spending the Solstice at the Spring Court at Tamlin’s invitation.
That prompts Rhysand to admit that he plans to visit the Spring Court himself to assess where Tamlin stands on his borders. Azriel offers to accompany him, but Rhysand intends to go alone and acknowledges that Feyre almost certainly won’t want to come either.
A Court of Frost and Starlight Chapter 8
Cassian senses a major storm approaching and cancels all training in the Windhaven camp for the day. He makes his way to a clothing shop after spotting winter goods in the window display.
When Cassian asks for the owner, Proteus, the woman behind the counter tells him that Proteus was her father and that he never came home from the war. Her name is Emerie, and she now runs the shop herself.
Cassian buys every piece of winter gear she has and asks Emerie to distribute it to whoever in the camp needs it most, passing it off as a gift from the High Lord. Emerie agrees to deliver everything before sundown, and Cassian heads back out into the cold.
A Court of Frost and Starlight Chapter 9
Feyre makes her way to the Rainbow Quarter to join a communal painting session at Ressina’s studio. She pauses outside, too nervous to go in, and reaches out to Rhysand through their bond. He offers to join her, but Feyre brushes it off. Instead of heading into Ressina’s studio, Feyre slips into an abandoned, boarded up gallery down the street. She uses her magic to warm and light the space, then goes looking for a stool so she can paint alone.
A Court of Frost and Starlight Chapter 10
Feyre spends the night painting in the gallery, working until the tower bells strike midnight. What she produces is a portrait of herself as the beast she became in the Ouroboros, a dark, raw image of everything beneath the surface.
Finishing the painting gives Feyre a sense of release she hasn’t been able to find anywhere else. She can’t bring it home with her since the painting needs to dry overnight, and she has no intention of leaving it somewhere it might be discovered, so she plans to return the next day and eventually tuck it away somewhere in the House of Wind.
A Court of Frost and Starlight Chapter 11
Rhysand visits Tamlin at the Spring Court manor, which has fallen into a state of complete neglect. The two exchange words that quickly turn hostile, with Rhysand calling Tamlin out for his failure to enforce his borders since the wall came down. Tamlin refuses any offer of Night Court warriors on Spring Court lands. Rhysand eventually tells Tamlin that he deserves every bit of what his life has become, then leaves.
Later, Rhysand comes across Feyre on a city street and walks with her, telling her everything. She listens without judgment and confirms that his words weren’t wrong, though Rhysand admits he could have been the bigger person. He then heads out alone to run an errand and ends up at a jeweler, where he selects three pieces of jewelry for Amren.
A Court of Frost and Starlight Chapter 12
Cassian shows up at the town house with pine boughs for Solstice, and he and Feyre spend the evening drinking and half-heartedly decorating until Azriel arrives and quietly fixes the mess Cassian and Feyre made. Rhys, Mor, and Amren filter in soon after, and the mood briefly sours when Amren brings up Nesta’s upcoming visit, which clearly rattles Cassian.
Feyre finds Elain in the kitchen and learns that Nesta has told her she wants nothing to do with family gatherings going forward. Feyre decides she’ll talk to Nesta herself, brushing off Elain’s warning that talking to Nesta won’t do any good.
Dinner brings a mix of warmth and tension. Azriel stops Cassian from digging into the food before Elain is seated, and Rhysand later tells Feyre privately that Azriel’s behavior comes from old pain he carries about how his mother was treated.
The table loosens up when Amren starts complaining about the inconveniences of living in a physical body, but things get uncomfortable when Amren implies Elain may be struggling to accept that her human life is gone for good. Rhysand steers the conversation away before Amren’s comments do any real damage.
After dinner, Feyre and Rhysand go looking for Nesta. She isn’t home, so Rhysand tracks her down and winnows them to a rough tavern called the Wolf’s Den. Feyre goes in alone because she doesn’t want Nesta to feel cornered.
