A Court of Wings and Ruin Prologue

Rhysand walks through a battlefield two years before the Wall, taking stock of the devastation after a brutal three-day fight. His forces managed to hold a strategically important keep against the Loyalist army. The Loyalists eventually pulled back without surrendering and left their dead where they fell.

By the end of the fighting, Rhysand had burned through all of his power and spent the final hours swinging a sword alongside mortal soldiers like everyone else. His father’s reinforcements arrived on the third day and helped drive the enemy back for good.

With the battle over, Rhysand moves through the carnage looking for his brothers, especially Cassian. He suspects his father deliberately assigned Cassian to one of the most dangerous positions. He goes from body to body, checking the faces of fallen Illyrian soldiers one by one, but finds no sign of Cassian or Azriel among the dead. Still, Rhysand continues searching, the field of corpses stretching out as far as he can see.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Part 1: Princess of Carrion

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 1

Feyre is living at Tamlin’s manor under the guise of a traumatized woman recovering from her time with Rhysand, but she’s actually there as a spy. While painting alone in the studio, thoughts of her sisters overwhelm her, and she snaps her paintbrush. She quickly burns the broken pieces and clears the air with magic before anyone notices.

Tamlin and Lucien appear and bring Feyre to a meeting with Ianthe, the High Priestess who sold Feyre’s sisters out to the King of Hybern. In the hallway beforehand, Lucien asks Feyre to reveal where Elain, his mate, is being kept. Feyre shuts him down with misleading information about Rhysand and keeps her real allegiances hidden.

At the meeting, Ianthe apologizes and explains that she gave Feyre’s sisters to Hybern so they could be turned Fae and remain with Feyre permanently while helping Ianthe maintain Hybern’s trust. Lucien openly challenges Ianthe’s explanation and makes it clear that he doesn’t buy it. Tamlin takes Ianthe at her word and urges the group to stay unified.

Feyre uses the meeting to gather intelligence. When Tamlin mentions that he’s been relocating civilians to the eastern part of his territory for their safety, Feyre concludes that Hybern’s forces must be approaching from the west.

Tamlin then announces that a Hybern delegation will arrive the following day and that Jurian will be there by noon.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 2

Feyre is pretending that she has returned to Tamlin willingly while secretly working to undermine him. She sends her plans to Rhysand through their mating bond and learns that Cassian, Azriel, and her sisters are alive and recovering. Feyre keeps those moments of contact brief, afraid that relying on the bond too often might expose her deception.

Jurian arrives with two Hybern royals, Prince Dagdan and Princess Brannagh, the King of Hybern’s nephew and niece. Feyre immediately recognizes both royals as dangerous. The twins barely speak and seem to share a single, wordless way of operating, which makes Feyre suspect they may be Daemati capable of invading other people’s minds.

At lunch, the twins announce that they want to survey the wall the next day to find the best place to bring it down. Feyre immediately volunteers herself and Lucien to go along, giving her a direct way to gather the intelligence she needs to pass back to Rhysand.

Jurian makes provocative comments about Lucien’s mate and Feyre’s past with Rhysand. Feyre quickly realizes it’s a setup. While everyone’s attention is on Jurian, the twins try to slip into Tamlin’s and Lucien’s minds. Feyre catches them, blocks the intrusion, and hits back hard enough to make both royals physically recoil. She brushes the whole thing off, keeping Tamlin in the dark about what she just did.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 3

Feyre and Lucien escort Jurian and the Hybern royals to one of the gaps in the wall dividing the human and Fae worlds. Brannagh asks how many openings exist, and Lucien says there are three inland and one near the sea. Brannagh rules out the coastal opening, which signals to Feyre that Hybern wants a land route. Dagdan also lets slip that the human queens have little control over their own people, and Feyre files that information away.

While the royals look around, Feyre and Lucien slip away to talk privately. Lucien admits that he found Feyre’s melted ring the day she vanished and hid it before Tamlin could see it.

Back at the manor, Ianthe announces a solstice party and wants to discuss it with Feyre. Feyre agrees and steers Lucien away before he says something he shouldn’t. Lucien then confesses that he stood in for Tamlin during the Great Rite and slept with Ianthe. He asks Feyre not to tell Elain, and Feyre promises to keep it between them.

Later, Alis confides that she saw the Morrigan take Feyre willingly all those months ago but never told anyone. Alis also mentions a cousin in the Summer Court who saw Feyre looking genuinely happy with Rhysand. Feyre sticks to her cover story. Alis then asks Feyre to keep Alis’s nephews safe from whatever Feyre has planned, but Feyre gives nothing away. Alis lays out a white dress for the solstice and leaves.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 4

Ianthe insists on a religious ceremony before any celebrating begins, so everyone gathers on a hilltop before dawn. Feyre arrives with Tamlin, dressed in white and playing the devoted partner.

The centerpiece of the ceremony is a moment Ianthe has carefully staged. She stands at a marked spot where the rising sun will pour into her outstretched arms, framing her as divinely favored. Feyre has moved the marker stone five feet to the right. When the sun rises, the light falls on Feyre instead. The crowd calls her “Cursebreaker” and “Blessed.” Lucien drops to one knee, and everyone follows. Ianthe is left standing in the dark and spends the rest of the day spinning the story to her acolytes.

Later, Feyre manages to connect briefly with Rhysand through their bond. She tells him the Hybern royals are at the estate and promises she’ll be home soon. The exchange is short, strained, and costly for both of them.

At the Summer Solstice party, Tamlin asks Feyre to dance. When the music slows, he admits he never went through with the Calanmai Rite. Feyre hints that the blessing might not have been just for her. They spend the rest of the evening beneath an oak tree, watching the festivities until the stars come out.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 5

Feyre returns to the manor in the early hours of the morning and can’t sleep. She goes to Lucien’s room, pretending to be shaken by a nightmare about her time Under the Mountain, and Lucien holds and comforts her while she cries.

Tamlin then appears in the doorway and finds Feyre and Lucien tangled together, his claws partially out. Feyre quickly tells Tamlin it was just a nightmare, pulls him away before anything can escalate, and shuts her bedroom door on him.

Once alone, Feyre reveals it was all staged. She’d worn a revealing nightgown on purpose, faked the nightmare, and used her magic to track Tamlin’s movements through the house so she could time the visit to Lucien’s room perfectly. She’d even placed a magical shield around the room so Lucien wouldn’t sense Tamlin coming until it was too late for Lucien to look innocent.

The whole thing was designed to stoke Tamlin’s jealousy over Lucien, a fear Feyre knew had been simmering in him since her earliest days at the manor. She gets dressed, knowing she still has more to do.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 6

Breakfast is tense and largely silent. Ianthe reports that the land around her temple is dying, blames the naga, and warns that an attack may be coming. Feyre brushes off the warning and says they’ll deal with it after they return from the wall. Ianthe then pressures Tamlin to join the expedition, invoking the threat of the Night Court, and suggests sending Rhysand’s family’s wings back to him as a bargaining chip. Tamlin quietly says that he burned the wings long ago. Feyre rejects the idea of Tamlin coming along, and the group heads out.

The group reaches the cleft in the wall by nightfall. Around the dying fire, Feyre asks Lucien whether there’s any way out of Tamlin’s deal with Hybern. Lucien says the magic binding the deal is too old and too precisely crafted to undo. He admits he once traveled to the Day Court to find a way to break Feyre’s bargain with Rhysand, though nothing came of the attempt.

Lucien also tells Feyre that when Tamlin realized she was gone, he tore the manor apart and executed the sentries who’d been on duty. When Feyre asks Lucien what Tamlin hopes to gain from the Hybern alliance, Lucien deflects.

The next morning, the group hikes to the crack in the wall and finds three Children of the Blessed staring through from the other side.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 7

Three young humans calling themselves the Children of the Blessed appear at the wall and offer themselves as tribute to the immortal lands. The Hybern twins show immediate predatory interest, but Feyre steps forward and bluntly tells the three to go home. She also secretly reshapes the humans’ perception of the group so they understand they’re in danger.

The tactic works, and the three run. Feyre has slipped a deeper command into the humans’ minds as well, pushing them to find passage overseas and warn as many people as possible before the war closes in. When Jurian quietly thanks her afterward, Feyre pretends not to know what he means.

That night, Jurian reveals what he actually wants. He isn’t there for Hybern’s cause, but he’s after Miryam, who left him for Prince Drakon during the War. He also shares a story about Rhysand, claiming that during the War, Rhysand marched his entire legion into a trap to pull Miryam out of an enemy stronghold and lost the legion to capture and torture in the process. According to Jurian, Rhysand built his cruel reputation on purpose. Jurian then suggests that Feyre isn’t Rhysand’s captive but someone Rhysand deliberately sent.

The next morning, Lucien wakes Feyre because he has caught the smell of blood. The Hybern royals slipped through the wall during the night and killed the three young humans using the same brutal methods as before. Feyre and Lucien lay their cloaks over the bodies. They consider burying the dead humans but decide against it, since doing so might signal to Hybern that they’re willing to cover up whatever the twins choose to do.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 8

Tamlin confronts Feyre and Lucien for sending the Bogge after the Hybern royals in retaliation for the murders of three humans. The argument turns ugly, and Tamlin eventually orders Lucien out. Alone with Feyre, Tamlin loses control, and his power sends furniture crashing into her, cutting her face. Lucien bursts back in and leads Feyre past a hall of stunned sentries.

Feyre deliberately holds back her healing abilities to keep her injuries visible. She contacts Rhysand through their bond, then arranges a ride with Bron and Hart the next day so they can see her bruises for themselves.

Feyre invites Ianthe to the house and makes a point of praising both Tamlin and Ianthe warmly at a public dinner, quietly laying a trap. That night, naga breach the estate grounds, and Ianthe steps forward, claiming she received a prophetic vision that saved everyone and cemented her influence.

The following morning, Tamlin prepares to publicly whip the sentry whose keys the naga used to enter. Feyre releases a memory she’d planted in the sentry’s mind, and the sentry accuses Ianthe of stealing the keys and staging the whole attack. Ianthe talks over him and pushes for the punishment to proceed anyway. Tamlin sides with Ianthe over his own guard, and the whipping goes ahead while the sentries look on with barely concealed contempt.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 9

Ianthe maneuvers herself onto the trip to the wall despite the whipping incident. Meanwhile, Feyre tends to the injured sentry and wins the loyalty of the guards, especially Bron and Hart. The night before the group sets out, Alis says her goodbyes and tells Feyre that she’s heading home to the Summer Court for good.

At the wall, Feyre goads the Hybern twins into talking too freely. She learns that their combined forces number close to two hundred thousand and that the Cauldron is meant not to transport armies but to find and break open the wall’s weakest points.

With everything she came for, Feyre takes her pack and Tamlin’s knives and walks into the woods. She has already planted a false memory in one of the sentries, a memory designed to shatter Tamlin’s alliance from the inside once she’s gone.

Feyre doesn’t get far before she finds Lucien shackled to a tree while Ianthe assaults him. Feyre breaks into Ianthe’s mind, stops the assault, and forces Ianthe to free Lucien. She then compels Ianthe to crush her own hand with a rock and leaves her with a nameless terror woven into her thoughts, one that will follow Ianthe for the rest of her life without her ever knowing why.

Suddenly, Brannagh and Dagdan step out of the trees. They saw everything, and now they know exactly what Feyre is.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 10

Feyre is caught mid-escape by the Hybern royals, who reveal they’ve been secretly weakening her magic for weeks by lacing her food with powdered faebane. They also poisoned the apple Feyre ate that morning, timing the dose to strip her of her powers entirely before she could get away.

A fight breaks out. Feyre holds her own against Dagdan, drawing on her combat training, while Lucien takes down Brannagh. Feyre finishes Dagdan herself, killing him before Dagdan can reach Lucien. Before they leave, she uses her fading mental control over Ianthe to plant a cover story, ensuring Ianthe will tell anyone who asks that Feyre killed the twins in self-defense and then ran.

Lucien refuses to be left behind. He wants his mate back, and Feyre reluctantly agrees to let him come. By the time they reach the foothills, both of them have lost their magic completely. The Summer Court would kill Feyre on sight, and going back Under the Mountain is too risky. Lucien says he knows somewhere they can hide in the Autumn Court, so Feyre and Lucien step together into the cave portal and leave Spring behind.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Part 2: Cursebreaker

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 11

Feyre and Lucien emerge from the cave into the Autumn Court to find no sentries waiting for them. Without her magic, Feyre can’t sense danger and must trust Lucien to lead. They take shelter for the night in an old hunting cave Lucien once knew.

Once Feyre and Lucien stop, Lucien confronts Feyre about Hybern. He’d figured out that she was lying but stayed quiet, partly to spare Tamlin the loss of hope and partly to preserve his only chance of reaching Elain. They argue and agree to leave the matter there for the night.

By morning, Rhysand still hasn’t reached Feyre, so Feyre and Lucien set off north through Beron‘s territory. They forage for food and say little to each other. Getting past Beron’s Forest House alone takes them three days, as the place is so heavily guarded that they have to skirt it entirely. At one point, Lucien mentions Jesminda by name for the first time, admitting that failing to protect her turned the Autumn Court against him as well.

Once past the Forest House, Feyre and Lucien push into the mountains on the Winter Court border, hoping the crossing will restore Feyre’s powers. Feyre finally gets a real night of sleep, and as her magic barely begins to return, she drifts into Lucien’s mind and catches a glimpse of him watching her sleep and laying his cloak over her.

Feyre jolts wakes with a hand clamped over her face. Lucien’s brothers have caught up with Feyre and Lucien.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 12

Feyre and Lucien are ambushed in a cave by Eris, the Autumn Court heir, and two of his brothers, who plan to drag them back to their father, Beron. When Eris shoves Feyre forward, she drives her elbow into his face, and Lucien blasts Eris and his brothers back with flame. Feyre and Lucien bring the cave ceiling down to seal the brothers inside before running.

After escaping, Feyre and Lucien push into the mountains with almost nothing. Their supplies are gone, the cold is brutal, and faebane is still blocking most of Feyre’s magic. They eventually find a cave and press close together through the night just to stay alive.

While they wait out the cold, Lucien asks Feyre about Elain. Feyre tells him that Elain is engaged to a human lord’s son whose father has built his life around hunting faeries. The conversation grows tense when Lucien asks Feyre why she left the Spring Court and when she started loving Rhysand. Feyre doesn’t give him a straight answer.

Feyre and Lucien make it through the night and cross into Winter Court territory, where Feyre’s power begins to slowly creep back. They push out onto a vast frozen lake, hoping to get far enough to winnow home once enough magic returns. Then Feyre and Lucien look back and see Eris and his brothers at the lake’s edge, with Eris raising a hand of flame directly toward the ice beneath their feet.

A Court of Wings and Ruin Chapter 13

Eris and his brothers close in on Feyre and Lucien, thawing the ice ahead to cut off their escape and shooting arrows to herd Feyre and Lucien toward shore. Feyre uses her ice powers to refreeze the lake as she and Lucien run, but an arrow tears through her forearm and she goes down. Eris binds Feyre in ropes of fire and drags her toward a group of waiting sentries.

Cassian and Azriel arrive in time, both alive and fully healed. Cassian faces off against Eris while Azriel and Lucien take on the other two brothers. Feyre breaks free using a move Cassian had drilled into her during training, and Cassian drives his blade through Eris’s gut.

Feyre calls a halt before her companions can finish Eris and his brothers off. She drops her glamour, reveals the markings of her mating bond, and announces herself as High Lady of the Night Court. Feyre tells the Autumn Court they’ll meet again on the battlefield, then has Cassian and Azriel fly her and Lucien out.

Cassian, Azriel, Feyre, and Lucien land at the border of the eighth territory, where Mor has been keeping watch. Mor explains that Rhysand sensed the bond moments ago and is already on his way back. Mor stayed at the border to keep Kallias’s forces from looking south. She then brings the group to the town house.
