Shield of Sparrows is a slow-burn, high-stakes romantasy perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros―where enemies become lovers, monsters stalk a cursed realm, and a forgotten princess finds the strength to tear off her crown and become the warrior she was never meant to be.

The gods sent monsters to the five kingdoms to remind mortals they must kneel.

I’ve spent my life kneeling―to their will and to my father's. As a princess, my only duty is to wear the crown and obey the king.

I was never meant to rule. Never meant to fight. And I was never supposed to be the daughter who sealed an ancient treaty with her own blood.

But that changed the fateful day I stepped into my father’s throne room. The day a legendary monster hunter sailed to our shores. The day a prince ruined my life.

Now I’m crossing treacherous lands beside a warrior who despises me as much as I despise him―bound to a future I didn’t choose and a husband I barely know.

Everyone wants me to be something I’m not―a queen, a spy, a sacrifice.

But what if I refused the role chosen for me? What if I made my own rules? What if there’s power in being underestimated?

And what if―for the first time―I reached for it?

Shield of Sparrows Book Summary

This Devney Perry Shield of Sparrows chapter summary contains spoilers.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 1

Odessa stands on a cliffside, contemplating a jump into the ocean, but she holds back because Odessa would be late for her father’s meeting with the Turan warriors. Her fiancé Banner arrives and tells her thatthe Guardian has traveled to Roslo with the warriors. The Guardian killed Banner’s brother, a loss that later drove Banner’s mother to suicide. Banner loses his temper, yells at Odessa, then apologizes and rides off.

As she walks back, Odessa thinks about Mae, her half-sister, and Mae’s upcoming departure after the wedding. Odessa turns around, runs back to the cliff, and jumps.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 2

Odessa sneaks back into the castle, soaking wet, and nearly collides with the Voster priest, who serves as her father’s emissary, on her way upstairs. The priest unsettles Odessa, and he uses his magic to draw the water from her hair into a crown above her head before Odessa flees.

Near Odessa’s room, Margot, clearly annoyed, rushes Odessa to get dressed and re-dyes her hair to cover its natural color. While working on Odessa’s hair, Margot reveals that the Turans have already killed six marroweels and brought the bodies to the docks. The Turans were hired to clear monsters from the trade routes that Quentis depends on ahead of the crux migration expected next spring. Margot also warns Odessa not to go anywhere unguarded.

Margot eventually gives up on Odessa’s hair and leaves. Odessa finishes getting ready and heads to the throne room, already late.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 3

Odessa slips into the throne room, where her father is paying five Turan warriors for killing the marroweels. One warrior suggests that the price may no longer be enough, but before the debate continues, two Voster priests enter. The second priest, more powerful than the first, levitates into the room, followed by the Guardian. Banner, standing at the king’s side, visibly struggles to contain his rage.

After introductions, Odessa’s father presents Mae to Prince Zavier, her betrothed. Zavier looks Mae over, then exchanges a silent look with the Guardian, who announces that Prince Zavier will marry Odessa instead, that very night, as the bride price for killing the marroweels.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 4

The throne room erupts. Margot, Mae, Banner, and the king all push back against the decree, and Odessa accidentally calls the Guardian a jackass out loud before her father silences the room.

The king invokes the Shield of Sparrows treaty, claiming the right to choose which of his daughters is offered, and the king’s own Voster priest supports his claim.

But the other Voster reveals himself as the High Priest and raises the Chain of Sevens, an ancient decree that entitles a warrior to a bride of his choosing if he kills seven female creatures of the same species. The Guardian reveals that Prince Zavier killed seven female marroweels, not six.

The king tries to dismiss the decree as legend, but the High Priest steps onto the floor, and the temperature plummets. Faced with the High Priest’s power, the king backs down. The High Priest announces that Odessa will marry Prince Zavier, fulfilling both treaties at once.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 5

With the others gone, the king asks Brother Dime if there’s any way out. Brother Dime studies Odessa, says only that this is Odessa’s fortune, and leaves.

The king dismisses the guards and Banner. Alone, Mae pulls a knife on Odessa, demanding to know what Odessa did to steal Prince Zavier. Their father breaks up the fight, questions Odessa about her day, and accepts her partial answers. Then, in a rare moment of warmth, the king apologizes and tells Odessa she must go because refusing would cost him his life.

Then the king reveals his plan. He arranged for the Turans to come to Roslo so Prince Zavier would travel with them, allowing the wedding to be moved ahead of schedule. The king’s real goal was to get a daughter into Turah to spy out the location of Allesaria, the hidden Turan capital, and find a way to breach it. The king believes something in Allesaria could stop the crux migration entirely.

Odessa wasn’t the daughter the king planned to send, but he doesn’t hesitate. Her father orders Odessa to find a way into Allesaria, learn everything she can about the Guardian’s powers, and kill him if she gets the chance. Then the king tells Margot to get Odessa ready for the wedding that night.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 6

Odessa prepares for her marriage and move to Turah. With no blue dress available, Odessa settles on her palest gray one. Margot sends the others out and advises Odessa to keep Zavier happy enough that he won’t suspect her true purpose.

Before leaving, Odessa retrieves two hidden items from the floor of her closet. One is a journal. The other is a mysterious necklace with a pendant that Odessa found years ago and has never been able to identify. She tucks the necklace inside her dress.

Mae comes to say goodbye. She warns Odessa not to trust anyone in Turah and urges her to be ruthless. They share a real hug before their father and Margot walk in. The king produces a small knife and a vial, cuts Odessa’s palm, and collects her blood. Odessa stares out at the ocean, resigned to what lies ahead.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 7

Odessa’s father escorts her to the castle’s underground sanctuary. Zavier and his warriors arrive, with the Guardian entering last.

The ceremony is a quick signing of the Shield of Sparrows treaty. As Odessa reads the treaty, she learns that if she kills Zavier, she dies too, and vice versa. Odessa says her vows, while the Guardian speaks Zavier’s vows on his behalf, and Odessa and Zavier sign in blood. The High Priest seals the treaty with magic.

The king invites everyone to a feast, but Zavier gives Odessa a brief kiss on the cheek and walks out with his warriors, leaving her father visibly furious.

As Odessa moves to leave, the Guardian stops her with a taunt about chasing her new husband to his room. The Guardian walks past the king without acknowledgment and tells Odessa to enjoy her last night in Quentis. He adds that they sail at dawn.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 8

Odessa arrives at the docks at dawn, running on no sleep or food after spending the night being briefed on espionage in her father’s study. Odessa’s family hasn’t come to see her off.

She wanders to pass the time and stops to examine the seven dead marroweels hung on hooks, cutting her finger on a scale as she crouches for a closer look.

The Guardian appears and taunts Odessa about the voyage and her living conditions. Odessa fires back and calls him a killer. When Odessa doesn’t move, the Guardian grabs her waist and pushes her toward the ship. She trips toward the corpse, and the Guardian catches her arm but lets go immediately when Odessa winces from an earlier injury.

After a pause, the Guardian picks up a loose curl of Odessa’s hair, apparently smells the dye in it, and drops it with contempt. Then he tells Odessa to come along. Odessa follows, already fantasizing about pushing the Guardian overboard.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 9

Odessa finds her family waiting dockside after all. Mae pulls Odessa aside to warn her about the Guardian and lets slip that Mae knows their father’s full plan for Allesaria. Margot hugs Odessa and tells her that Odessa is more capable than she gives herself credit for. Odessa asks to say goodbye to Arthy but learns that Arthy wasn’t brought to the docks, and Odessa has to leave without seeing him.

The king sends the others away and speaks to Odessa alone, apologizing for his failures and catching her off guard by mentioning Odessa’s mother. Odessa presses him for more details about his plan, but the king deflects, asks only that Odessa trust him, and walks her to the ship.

As Roslo fades from view, Banner appears on horseback at the clifftop, and Odessa and Banner wave to each other until Banner disappears. Odessa watches the coastline until it is gone.

Zavier appears beside Odessa and speaks to her for the first time, telling her that she’ll need different clothes in Turah. He calls her Odessa Wolfe, which hits her hard. Odessa shoves her crown into Zavier’s hands and walks away.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 10

Odessa wakes after a rough first night caring for her seasick lady’s maids. She finds clothes left in the locked room assigned to her, ignores them, and puts on her usual gray dress.

On deck, the Guardian goads Odessa briefly before jumping overboard and swimming to the other ship at inhuman speed.

Zavier takes the Guardian’s place at the railing and speaks openly, warning Odessa that the Krisenth Crossing is dangerous and that three of their six ships were lost coming over. He mentions that killing seven marroweels was deliberate and recalls that a previous Sparrow once left Turah after bearing her child, planting the idea that Odessa might one day be able to leave as well.

Odessa understands that Zavier is testing her loyalty and decides to keep his confidence. When Odessa asks why he chose her over Mae, Zavier doesn’t answer. When Odessa asks whether he desires her, he sidesteps the question with a vague compliment and walks away.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 11

Odessa heads up to the deck in her Turan attire. The Guardian taunts Odessa, then implies Zavier hasn’t wanted Odessa in his bed. Before Odessa can respond, a marroweel slams into the ship.

The Guardian takes charge, sending the crew to the harpoons and ordering Brielle and Odessa to remain where they are. In the chaos, Odessa falls over the railing.

Odessa swims hard, but the ship is pulling away. The crew lowers the sails and turns back. The Guardian throws a harpoon with a rope into the water beside Odessa, and she seizes it. As the crew hauls Odessa in, the marroweel rises beneath her. The Guardian orders the rope yanked hard at the last second, pulling Odessa back onto the deck as the monster launches itself after her, then kills it with a harpoon.

Zavier leaps from the other ship, finds Odessa alive, and gives the Guardian a nod of acknowledgment.

The Guardian rounds on Odessa and orders her to obey his commands without question. Odessa refuses, tells the Guardian she won’t take orders from him, and walks away, but she pauses to thank him for saving her life.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 12

Odessa goes up to find the dead marroweel hanging from the mast, its blood a dark green stain. The Guardian tells Odessa it’s a male, which explains its size. When Odessa asks why the Guardian didn’t dive in after her himself, he deflects, but she wonders whether he stayed on deck to kill the monster and save her at the same time.

Zavier arrives and reveals that his quarters are on the Cutter, next to Odessa’s.

Odessa announces that she wants a sword. Zavier is skeptical, but the Guardian hands Odessa his own blade as a test, pointing the weapon at his throat and telling her to hold it there. Odessa struggles with the weight but refuses to give up until the Guardian knocks the sword from her hands and turns it on her. Zavier agrees to get Odessa a sword.

Heading below, Odessa overhears Zavier and the Guardian agree that something is spreading. Then Prince Zavier remarks that arming Odessa is probably a bad idea since she’s going to try to kill the Guardian. The Guardian laughs it off. Odessa returns to her room for the rest of the day.
