Daggermouth Chapter 1: Mercy Is Dead
Greyson Serel, the president’s son, oversees a public execution in the city plaza. Two rebels have been condemned for a relationship across ring boundaries. Greyson shoots the man but hesitates at the woman. The Veyra captain beside him fires instead, and the broadcast captures everything live across New Found Haven.
Back at his apartment, Greyson pulls out a hidden cache of medical supplies he’s been preparing to smuggle to people in the outer rings through a rebel network. A knock at the door interrupts him before he can finish, and a Veyra officer arrives to escort him to his father.
President Maximus Serel wastes no time. He tells Greyson the hesitation was seen and cannot happen again, that the system only works when enforcers show no doubt. Then he delivers the real consequence. In five days, Greyson will marry Moraine Daunt, a woman loyal to everything the Heart upholds. Greyson resists for a moment before giving in.
Daggermouth Chapter 2: The Boundary
Shadera Kael meets Jaeger Nolin, the Daggermouth guild master, at Wolf’s Head bar in the Boundary. He slides a contract across the table. The target is Greyson Serel, and the payout is enough to feed every family in the Boundary for a year. She takes the job without much deliberation. When a mercenary nearby makes a crack about beating her to it, she drives a knife into his shoulder and asks the room if anyone else has something to say. No one does.
Before Shadera leaves, Jaeger warns her not to underestimate Greyson. Shadera tells him to send word on the timing of the next supply drop into the Boundary.
Back at her base, Shadera marks a new access point on her map through the Cardinal’s service tunnels, a route she plans to use to reach the Heart undetected. Then she takes out a Veyra-issued gun she has been saving for the right job. It’s the same weapon Maximus Serel used to execute her parents in front of her when she was ten.
Daggermouth Chapter 3: Ask No Questions
Greyson visits Callum at his club and explains he froze during the execution because the woman had been condemned for nothing more than loving someone from the wrong ring. Callum doesn’t offer false comfort. She was never leaving that platform alive regardless of Greyson’s choice. Greyson also tells him about the forced Vow with Moraine Daunt and asks Callum to take revenge if anything goes wrong. Callum agrees without hesitation.
At dinner, Greyson asks his father where the search for Brooker‘s killer stands. Maximus shuts him down, but Lira argues that refusing to retaliate only gives the Daggermouths more power. When Elara tries to ease the tension, Maximus strikes her across the face. Greyson rises and nearly draws his gun but stops himself. Sitting back down is the only way to keep his mother from another blow.
After Maximus leaves, Lira tells Greyson they’ll have to find Brooker’s killer themselves.
Daggermouth Chapter 4: Don’t Die
Jameson Vine shows up uninvited at Shadera’s warehouse, and they have sex. Afterward, he tells her he knows about the Greyson contract and warns that going after the president’s son is as good as walking into a grave. Shadera refuses to take the bait. Jameson admits he might be falling in love with her. She shuts him down.
Then, Jameson asks Shadera when she plans to leave. She tells him tonight. He hadn’t known, and the fact that she kept it from him for five days hits hard. Jameson asks her to walk away from the mission. Shadera tells him she can’t, not because she wants to die, but because it’s something she owes herself.
At midnight, Shadera shoulders her pack. Jameson kisses her before she leaves, and she lets him. Then she steps into the Boundary with just under three hours to reach the Heart before the next patrol cycle.
Daggermouth Chapter 5: Close Calls
Shadera moves through the maintenance tunnels toward the Heart. She runs into three men camped in the Cardinal section, kills two, and lets the third go with a warning. When she reaches the elevator shaft and starts climbing, the elevator drops without warning. She throws herself into a utility cavity just in time but loses the guns strapped to her left thigh, then continues the climb into the Heart’s underground garage.
Greyson is already there, lying beneath one of the Veyra patrol vehicles and securing hidden supply packages to the undercarriage. His wrench slips and hits the concrete. Both Greyson and Shadera register that someone else is in the garage, but neither identifies the other, and both slip away without a confrontation.
Back in his apartment, Greyson calls for Maya, a woman from the Cardinal who works for Callum and whose reputation for discretion keeps her a secret among the Heart’s elite. They have sex.
Greyson briefly thinks about the Vow ceremony seventeen hours away.
Daggermouth Chapter 6: Do Not Hesitate
Greyson wakes at four a.m. and prepares for the morning execution. His hand shakes while he cleans his gun, the memory of his last hesitation pressing in. He slams his fist on the table and heads to the plaza.
Shadera has positioned herself on a nearby balcony with a stolen mask to slip past security. Through a rifle scope, she watches Greyson carry out the execution of a woman condemned for smuggling medicine to the Boundary, the same act Greyson commits in secret. The woman’s final words declare that caring for the forgotten isn’t a crime and that death is mercy compared to life in the rings. Greyson’s hand trembles, but he pulls the trigger without faltering.
Through the scope, Shadera is overtaken by memories of her parents’ execution. When Greyson walks off the platform, her rage hardens into something deliberate. She lowers the rifle. She wants Greyson to see her face when she kills him.
Daggermouth Chapter 7: Do It
Greyson arrives early to the Vow ceremony room and waits alone while Shadera hides in the HVAC system overhead. When the duct creaks, Greyson looks up. She kicks out the vent and drops into the room, and they fight.
The fight proves Greyson stronger and harder to injure than Shadera expected. He stabs her in the side. She yanks the blade free and keeps going. He slams her onto the altar and demands to know who sent her. Shadera refuses, shoots him in the stomach, and trains her Veyra-issued gun between his eyes. She orders Greyson to plead for his life the way his victims pleaded for theirs.
Greyson doesn’t. He removes his mask, breaking the Heart’s most sacred law in front of her. Shadera freezes.
The doors burst open. Veyra flood the room with weapons drawn, followed by the Serel and Daunt families, who walk in on Greyson unmasked with an assassin holding a gun to his head. Both are out of options, locked in each other’s gaze.
Daggermouth Chapter 8: The Fallout
Greyson drops his mask and collapses. Elara rushes to his side while the Veyra subdue Shadera. Maximus orders Greyson taken to the hospital and Shadera placed in isolation.
During surgery, the doctor tells Greyson that medical supplies marked with his serial numbers appeared in a Cardinal clinic and saved ten lives. Greyson loses consciousness before he can respond.
Maximus meets with the Daunts. Clay and Moraine argue that breaking the mask law demands execution. Maximus reminds them he controls the medical care keeping Clay’s wife alive. They back down.
Elara reveals a loophole she wrote into the mask law. When a face is seen outside the Vow, both parties can take the Vow with each other instead of facing execution. She proposes forcing Greyson and Shadera into a public ceremony framed as a political union between the Heart and the Boundary. Through Shadera, they could expose rebel networks and bring the Daggermouths to heel. Lira adds that it would prove even the resistance’s most dangerous weapon can be turned against them.
Maximus agrees and warns Elara that if it fails, the consequences fall on her. He stands at the window, already calculating how to turn his son’s weakness into something that serves him.
Daggermouth Chapter 9: Kill Me Instead
Shadera wakes in a prison cell, badly injured. When she tells her cellmates she tried to kill Greyson Serel, the news spreads through the cell block. The other inmates tell her that whether he lived or died, she showed the rings that the Serels aren’t untouchable.
Guards order Shadera to her feet. She refuses. They beat and shock her before dragging her into the corridor. As they haul her past the cells, a woman begins singing the outlawed national anthem. A guard shoots her dead, but the rest of the prison takes up the song, and the block erupts in open defiance.
When a guard raises his weapon toward another prisoner, Shadera wrenches the rifle from his hands and opens fire on the Veyra. The guards shoot into the cells. She screams at them to kill her instead. They beat her back, disarm her, and throw her over a guard’s shoulder while the slaughter continues around her. She fights the whole way out.
The guard drags Shadera to a set of doors at the end of the corridor and knocks. Maximus Serel answers from the other side.
Daggermouth Chapter 10: You Do Not Have A Choice
Greyson wakes in the hospital. A nurse relays a message from Doctor Knowles that people outside the Heart are counting on him to survive. Captain Mikel arrives and orders Greyson to Haven Tower. Greyson re-staples his wound in private, gets dressed, and walks out.
Shadera is dragged into Maximus’s office, still covered in blood. Maximus removes his mask to assert dominance and tells her the only reason she’s still breathing is that he has a use for her. Greyson enters, and both he and Shadera are caught off guard to find themselves in the same room.
Maximus tells Greyson and Shadera they’ll marry publicly within the week. Both refuse. Maximus insists a public Vow is the only legal way to resolve Greyson being seen unmasked, and he declares the union will show the rings that even the resistance’s most dangerous operative can be brought to heel.
When Greyson and Shadera keep pushing back, Maximus shows surveillance footage of Jameson working at a rebel clinic and threatens to level it if Shadera refuses. He then shows footage of Lira with Callum and makes clear he’ll use them against Greyson. Shadera says she understands. Greyson gives a reluctant nod.
Maximus tells Greyson and Shadera they’ll live together in Greyson’s apartment under surveillance until the ceremony. Shadera is escorted out, already planning how to destroy the Serel family from the inside.
Daggermouth Chapter 11: Something Is Wrong
Jameson slips out of a clinic and realizes he’s being followed by drones. Not standard patrol units but high-level surveillance tech. They track him through the Boundary no matter where he goes. He leads them across rooftops and through abandoned buildings, gains the upper hand, and shoots both down. The wreckage bears the Serel family crest.
Carrying the remains to Wolf’s Head, Jameson dumps them in front of Jaeger. Jaeger tells him Shadera found her target and put a bullet in him, but it wasn’t fatal, and she was taken alive to Haven Tower. When the Veyra tried to move her, the other prisoners broke into an outlawed anthem after learning what she did. The guards opened fire and killed most of them, but the story is already spreading through the rings.
Jaeger sees Shadera’s capture as a potential turning point. Jameson isn’t interested. He tells Jaeger he never should’ve sent her after Greyson Serel, knowing how personal it was. Her need to look Greyson in the eye before killing him is exactly what got her caught.
The confrontation between Jameson and Jaeger heats up. Jameson threatens to go in alone if the Daggermouths won’t move. Jaeger warns that rushing in blind will only get Shadera killed faster. He asks for three days to gather intelligence and build a plan. Jameson agrees but makes clear he’ll go in when the time is up, ready or not.
