This Sarah J. Maas Queen of Shadows chapter summary contains full spoilers.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 75
Dorian is trapped in darkness, and a woman stands on a bridge calling out to him, urging him to remember who he is. He fights through the darkness and sees her.
Below the city, Aedion, Rowan, and Lorcan are pinned down in the tunnels by wave after wave of Valg soldiers. Their magic is spent, and they’re out of options. Lorcan vanishes into the dark, apparently fleeing. With Rowan badly wounded and barely conscious, Aedion steps in front of him, ready to face the final charge himself. The Valg commander raises his hand to give the order.
Lysandra arrives. She’s taken the form of a ghost leopard and severs the commander’s hand mid-signal, then tears through the remaining soldiers until none are left standing. Rowan, barely able to speak, tells Lysandra to go to the palace and find Aelin. She goes.
Racing through the city at full speed, Lysandra heads toward the castle and finds thirty Valg guards with crossbows waiting at the entrance. One guard fires directly at her chest. Nesryn, positioned on a nearby rooftop with her rebel fighters, shoots the bolt out of the air before it lands. With the entrance clear, Lysandra runs up toward the castle, where Aelin is still fighting above.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 76
Aelin is struggling on the bridge. She pulled her power up too fast, and her blood is running hot. Every time Dorian hurls darkness at her, she has to slam the darkness back with fire.
Then the King of Adarlan appears in the doorway behind her. He is casual about it, almost amused, confirming that Chaol tried to buy Aelin time and that it didn’t save him. Aelin is devastated, but the king’s indifferent tone is what finally gets through to Dorian. He goes still, fixes his eyes on the king, and starts asking whether his father killed Chaol. The king tells him to be silent. Dorian asks again. The light at the ring burns brighter.
The king turns his attention to Aelin and launches a spear of darkness at her, but Dorian stops it with a wall of ice. Something in him has shifted. His sense of self comes back, and he recognizes Aelin as the person who chose to come back for him. He reaches up, grabs the Wyrdstone collar around his throat, and tears it free.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 77
The Wyrdstone collar snaps, freeing Dorian. The King of Adarlan attacks immediately, and Aelin holds him off with a fire shield while keeping Dorian on his feet. As burnout approaches, Aelin reaches out her hand, and the two join their magic together.
Aelin and Dorian’s combined power proves too much for the king. He transforms into darkness and strikes at them, but they hold on and release everything they have. Together, they dismantle his power completely until none of it survives.
Elsewhere, Rowan, Aedion, and Lorcan fight their way out of the sewers and back to the castle grounds. Rowan shifts into hawk form and flies toward the castle just as a blinding explosion of light erupts overhead.
On the glass bridge, the king falls to his knees, stripped of his magic. Aelin and Dorian let go of each other, and Aelin collapses from the effort. The king looks up at Dorian and whispers, “My boy,” then turns to Aelin and asks whether she has finally come to save him.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 78
Aelin faces the king, who’s crumbling emotionally and physically. He confesses that Erawan, the Dark King, has been hiding inside Perrington’s body all along. As a young man, the king had unknowingly opened a sealed crypt using a key, and Erawan escaped, possessing Perrington while a lesser demon took control of the king. He insists that everything he did afterward was driven by his desperation to protect Dorian and keep magic-wielders out of Erawan’s reach.
The king admits that he was the one behind the towers and the spell that wiped magic from the world, claiming it was never about cruelty but about shielding the gifted from the Valg. He also confesses that on the night Aelin’s family was killed, he had come hoping that Aelin would use her fire to purge the demon from him. Aelin’s mother stopped that from happening, and after that, Erawan fixated entirely on eliminating Aelin’s bloodline so that nothing could ever threaten him again.
Before Aelin can process any of it, the king begs her to end him and tells her that Chaol is alive. Dorian dismisses everything as lies and, before Aelin can pull him back, unleashes his power. The glass castle comes crashing down.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 79
When Dorian brings the glass castle down, the bridge beneath Aelin gives way, and she falls through a storm of shattering glass. She pours everything she has into a shield of wildfire to keep the debris from tearing through Rifthold below. Aelin holds the wall of flame until she hits the ground and loses consciousness.
Aelin wakes moments later on the grass. The glass castle is gone entirely, and in its place stands a massive frozen wave of glass that now separates the castle grounds from the city. A few feet away, Dorian and Chaol are both alive. Aelin gets to her feet and heads down toward the city.
At the edge of the barrier, Aelin burns an opening through the glass wall and climbs onto the gallows platform to address the crowd. She tells them that their king is dead and that their prince is still alive, then announces herself as Queen of Terrasen. Aelin warns that she’ll deal harshly with any looting, rioting, or challenge to Dorian’s rule. She also declares all slaves free and makes it clear that anyone caught holding, harming, or selling enslaved people will die.
Then Aelin walks back up the hill and into the stone castle, where she finally allows herself to fall apart.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 80
Elide has been locked in a dungeon by her uncle Vernon for what feels like days. When Vernon finally visits her cell, he tells Elide that magic has returned to the world and that he intends to use her bloodline in some kind of experiment.
Vernon then brings in a demon prince named Cormac, a red-haired man with a black collar who can overwhelm people with horrifying memories just by looking at them. Vernon tells Elide that after the procedure, she’ll be handed over to Cormac’s care and that Cormac has a known history of preying on young women. Once Vernon leaves, Elide throws herself at the cell door in a panic but can’t get out.
Across the Keep, Manon returns from her travels and realizes Elide has been gone for days. She tears through the building looking for Elide, confronting the kitchen staff and roughing up the head laundress when the woman gives her a dismissive answer. A woman from the laundry eventually catches up with Manon on a bridge and passes along word that Elide is locked in one of the dungeons, with Vernon as the only person permitted inside. Manon immediately heads to the witches’ barracks to get the Thirteen.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 81
Elide’s uncle sends servants to scrub her down and dress her in a plain robe, then guards come to drag her to a prince waiting in the catacombs. Elide begs and fights the whole way, but the guards haul her out regardless, laughing and leering at her. Manon shows up and kills the guards before they can take Elide any farther.
Word had gotten out that Aelin Galathynius killed the King of Adarlan, and everything had fallen into chaos. Manon ignored it, rounded up the Thirteen, and sent them to get the wyverns ready. She then fought her way through three dungeons looking for Elide, with a mysterious female voice in her head urging her to move faster. Manon finally found Elide on the lowest level, killed the last of the guards, and snapped off Elide’s ankle chain.
Getting out is another problem. Soldiers are closing in from both directions, and Manon is trying to figure out their next move when Elide goes still and stares at the doorway. Kaltain stands there.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 82
Manon and Elide are fleeing Morath when they run into Kaltain in the hallway. Kaltain warns them that escaping by air will only get them chased down, so she suggests a different plan. Kaltain and Elide swap clothes so Kaltain can impersonate Elide and mislead the guards long enough for Manon and Elide to get out.
Before Manon and Elide leave, Kaltain cuts a shard of dark stone from her own arm and presses it into Elide’s hand. Kaltain tells Elide to find Celaena Sardothien and give the shard to Celaena directly, and to remind her of the promise she once made “to punish them all.”
Kaltain refuses to come with them. Instead, she lets the guards take her deeper into the fortress, passing herself off as Elide the whole way. Once the guards chain Kaltain to an altar in the ritual chamber below, she unleashes her shadowfire and tears through the halls, the breeding chambers, and everyone inside. She brings the whole section of the fortress down around her.
Manon carries Elide to the aerie, and the Thirteen barely clear the tower before the explosion destroys a third of Morath behind them.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 83
Rowan has kept vigil at Aelin’s bedside during the three days she slept, while Aedion has taken over running the castle and locked up the surviving guards. Chaol made it through, apparently saved by the Eye of Elena, and Dorian has been unconscious as well.
When Aelin finally opens her eyes, her first questions are about Dorian and Chaol. Rowan assures her both are alive, then brings her up to speed. Lorcan had known about the Wyrdhound trap and said nothing. The castle has been reorganized over the past few days, and Lysandra has kept the courtiers in line through sheer terror. Aelin then tells Rowan what the king revealed before his death and what Dorian chose to do despite that revelation.
After that, Aelin and Rowan finally have a quiet moment alone. Rowan tells Aelin she also gives him a reason to truly live rather than merely endure the centuries. He says that all his years of wandering were really spent looking for Aelin without knowing it. They kiss. Aedion walks in, and Rowan shuts the door in Aedion’s face with a gust of wind.
In the hallway, Aedion finds Lysandra. Lysandra looks at the closed door and says that kind of love is what she hopes to find someday.
The next day, Aelin stands outside Dorian’s room. Rowan waits at the end of the hall. Aelin goes in.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 84
Dorian wakes alone in an unfamiliar room, the collar gone but his mind hollowed out. Aedion tells him Chaol is alive but still unconscious. When Aelin comes to see him, she confirms what Dorian has been struggling to accept. His father is dead, and he’s now King of Adarlan. Guilt consumes him over what happened under the Valg’s control, especially Sorscha’s death. Aelin tells him plainly that none of it was his fault, though she knows Dorian isn’t ready to believe that yet.
When Chaol finally wakes, he finds Dorian at his bedside. Their reunion is raw and emotional. Dorian catches him up on everything that happened, but Chaol quickly realizes something is wrong. He can’t feel his legs. Dorian explains that Rowan managed to address the more critical spinal injuries but had to leave a lower fracture alone, judging the risk too great. The healers at the Torre Cesme are Chaol’s only real shot at walking again.
Before leaving, Dorian shares two pieces of news. He has named Chaol King’s Hand and appointed Nesryn temporary Captain of the Guard. Nesryn comes in shortly after and falls apart at the sight of Chaol alive. She tells him she feared the worst when the castle collapsed, and once Nesryn pulls herself together, she promises they’ll travel to the Southern Continent to find a way to heal him.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 85
Elide and the Thirteen fly north and make camp in Oakwald Forest for the night. In the morning, Manon tells Elide they have to part ways. The witches are returning to Morath, and Manon will tell Elide’s uncle that Elide died in the explosion. She sends Elide north toward Terrasen, warning Elide to travel through the forest and avoid the roads.
Then Manon shares news that changes everything. The King of Adarlan is dead, and Aelin Galathynius killed him. Aedion Ashryver and Ren Allsbrook are both alive and fighting. Elide had been considering slipping away south to safety, but after hearing the news, she decides to go north instead.
Before they separate, Manon gives Elide a pack with money and three daggers, then unlocks the ankle shackles Elide has been wearing. They say their goodbyes, and Elide walks into the forest alone.
Elide doesn’t get far before thirteen wyvern shadows sweep overhead. One wyvern doubles back above the canopy, and Elide raises her hand toward it. Then she pushes on, heading north to Terrasen.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 86
Lysandra delivers the last of Aelin’s things to the castle, and once they’re alone, Aelin presents her with a ring she secretly commissioned. The ring comes with an offer to make Lysandra the lady of a small, unclaimed northern territory, with Evangeline as the heir. Lysandra insists she doesn’t deserve it and that no one will accept her, but Aelin shuts that down and puts the ring on Lysandra’s finger herself. Lysandra eventually accepts.
That evening, Dorian drops by during the court’s first dinner together. Aelin waves off his hesitation and tells him to sit down. She introduces him to Rowan and Lysandra, and the meal ends with the group raising a toast. Aelin drinks to a new world, and Dorian drinks to freedom.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 87
Morath has been devastated. A significant portion of the fortress is gone, along with guards, servants, two covens, and Elide Lochan. The duke and Vernon survived. Manon is grateful that most of her witches were away when the explosion happened.
In the council chamber, the duke tells his war leaders that the damage will push their plans back by months. He orders Manon to have her covens ready and drilled before Manon’s grandmother arrives in two weeks, as he has no intention of abandoning his campaign against Aelin once the witch towers are finished.
On her way out, Manon grabs Vernon and makes it clear that she hasn’t forgotten what he did to Elide. When Vernon tells Manon she can’t touch him, she agrees, but warns him that Aelin is alive and has her own reasons to come after him. Manon then digs her nails deeper, draws blood, and walks out.
At the aerie, Manon tells Asterin they’ll hold their position and wait for Manon’s grandmother to bring the towers. She then asks about the human hunter Asterin once loved. Asterin says the hunter grew very old, then one day walked into the woods and never came back. When Manon asks what loving someone felt like, Asterin says it undoes and remakes you, more powerful than rage or magic or anything else Asterin has known.
Manon says things are changing. Asterin says that’s a good thing, and for a moment, the two grin at each other.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 88
Aelin slips away the night before their departure to visit Elena’s tomb one last time, but rubble from the explosion has sealed the entrance. She gives up and returns to find Dorian and Chaol already waiting by her fireplace. She formally appoints Chaol as Ambassador for Terrasen, charging him with winning over the Southern Continent’s royal family and securing a military alliance. Chaol hands back the Eye of Elena, and the three of them share a quiet, bittersweet farewell.
The next morning, Aelin visits Chaol before leaving. She conjures her fire magic for him one final time and leaves a golden rose flame burning on his nightstand as a parting gesture. For Nesryn, Aelin leaves behind a golden arrow. Then she heads to the courtyard, says goodbye to Dorian, and rides north out of Rifthold with her companions.
That night, Dorian wakes from a nightmare and steps out onto his balcony. Across the castle grounds, Manon sits astride her wyvern atop the glass wall. They hold each other’s gaze for a moment before Dorian raises his hand in greeting, and Manon turns and flies off into the night.
Manon rides away, wondering what the future holds and hoping that everyone makes it through alive.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 89
Aelin and her companions spend three weeks riding north, steering clear of well-traveled routes and settlements so Aelin’s return to Terrasen can stay quiet. She’s carrying a Wyrdkey in her saddlebag, and though Rowan notices the Wyrdkey now and then, she keeps reassuring him that everything is fine. She also finds herself wondering whether Lorcan has made his way to Morath to track down the remaining two keys.
When the group finally reaches the top of a steep hill, Terrasen opens up before Aelin for the first time. Aedion points out an old stone marker at the border, and Aelin walks past it, finally back on Terrasen’s soil.
