Crown of Midnight Part 1: The King’s Champion

Crown of Midnight Chapter 1

The King’s Champion breaks into a manor house under cover of a storm, slipping through a second-floor window without being detected. The assassin ducks into an alcove when a servant comes down the hall to close the window, but the servant passes without noticing her and goes back downstairs.

Once the hall is clear, the assassin moves to Lord Nirall‘s bedroom. She slips inside and finds Lord Nirall asleep beside his wife. The assassin draws her sword and raises it over him. At that moment, Lord Nirall’s eyes snap open.

Crown of Midnight Chapter 2

Celaena Sardothien returns to the glass castle and presents the King of Adarlan with a severed head, a seal ring, and a hand as proof of her latest kill. The king accepts her report and gives Celaena a new target through Chaol Westfall. The target is Archer Finn, a popular courtesan suspected of ties to a rebel movement growing inside Rifthold.

After leaving the council chamber, Chaol follows Celaena to the castle sewer where she dumps the remains. Chaol tells her he was so worried he nearly rode out to find her himself. They share a brief embrace before heading back to Celaena’s rooms, where Chaol debriefs her on the mission.

Alone afterward, Celaena reflects on what she’s been doing these past months. She hasn’t killed anyone. She gives each target a choice, lets them disappear, and uses rotting corpses from sick-houses as proof of the kills. Archer poses a problem because he’s too well-known and too recognizable for that trick to work easily.

Celaena sits with the weight of how exposed she is. If the king ever discovers she has spared her targets, he’ll order her death.

Crown of Midnight Chapter 3

Celaena dreams that Cain is chasing her through a dark passageway with a monster at his heels. She wakes frightened, scans the room to make sure nothing is there, and eventually settles back to sleep.

The next morning, Celaena walks Fleetfoot in the game park and uses the time to catch up with Nehemia. Celaena tells Nehemia about her new assignment from the king, who believes Archer Finn is tied to a secret group plotting against him. The king plans to give Celaena targets one by one, each meant to be killed.

Nehemia urges Celaena to uncover what the king is truly planning, and Celaena says she will, though she privately has no intention of doing it. The king has made it clear that if Celaena disobeys, Chaol, Nehemia, and Nehemia’s family will pay the price.

Then Nehemia brings up Calaculla, a labor camp that keeps filling with her people while the king refuses to meet with her about it. She tells Celaena she can’t keep standing by and needs to act. Celaena stays silent, and Nehemia leaves disappointed.

Celaena decides to go into Rifthold before tracking down Archer later that afternoon.

Crown of Midnight Chapter 4

Celaena and Chaol run through the frozen game park, and Chaol brings up Cain. Chaol has been carrying the guilt of killing Cain, and Celaena takes his burden seriously. She tells him she never forgets the people she’s killed either, but explains that what he did was honorable because he was protecting her. The moment settles between them with more weight than either of them acknowledges, and Chaol steps back from it.

On the way back through the castle gardens, Celaena and Chaol run into Dorian Havilliard and his cousin Roland Havilliard, who’s just been given a seat on the king’s council. Roland turns his attention to Celaena in a way that puts her on edge. Chaol looks unhappy about the situation and moves Celaena along before things grow more uncomfortable, citing breakfast as the reason.

Later, Celaena returns from shopping and finds Dorian waiting in her rooms. He wants to pick up their friendship where it was before things grew complicated between them. Celaena deflects by saying she has to head back into Rifthold, which is true since she’s tracking Archer for her current mission. When Dorian asks directly if she wants him to fight for her, she tells him she just wants to be left alone. Dorian leaves, and Celaena isn’t entirely satisfied with her own answer.

Crown of Midnight Chapter 5

Celaena stakes out a townhouse to trail Archer, waiting on a rooftop across the street. When Archer finally leaves, she follows his carriage through the city but finds nothing useful.

That night, Celaena stays in Chaol’s quarters and reviews the information she’s gathered on Archer. Chaol asks why she’s following Archer at all instead of finishing the job. Celaena explains that she wants to see whether Archer leads her to a wider rebel network before she acts.

While studying a map of Archer’s clients, Celaena notices a street she always avoids. She asks Chaol about a crime lord named Rourke Farran. Chaol explains that Wesley, Arobynn Hamel‘s personal guard, killed Farran nine months ago, and that Arobynn later ordered Wesley’s death in retaliation.

The revelation leads to a conversation about Sam Cortland. Celaena explains that Farran killed Sam, that she went after Farran to avenge him, and that she walked straight into a trap when she did. She still doesn’t know who set her up or where Sam’s body was buried. Chaol shares his own story about a woman named Lithaen, who left him for Roland. Before leaving, Celaena tells Chaol that anyone who’d choose Roland over him is a fool.

Back in her room, restless and unable to settle, Celaena heads to the library. In the hallway, she encounters a hooded figure that moves like nothing human. Her Eye of Elena amulet glows, and the creature recoils before vanishing. Celaena returns to her room.

Crown of Midnight Chapter 6

After spotting a strange figure outside the library, Celaena retreats to her room, where a lunar eclipse has just begun. Unnerved by the encounter and by the way her amulet reacted, she decides to seek Elena for answers and heads down to the queen’s underground tomb through a hidden passage.

At the door, the bronze skull knocker startles Celaena by speaking. He calls himself Mort and says King Brannon placed him there centuries ago to guard the tomb. Inside, Elena is nowhere to be found. Mort explains she wore herself out helping Celaena and needs time to recover, but she left a message.

The message warns that what happened with Cain was only a preview of something worse and that Celaena is in a position to stop it now that she’s the King’s Champion. Celaena wants nothing to do with it. Furious that Elena was absent while Terrasen was falling apart, she refuses to chase after some mission on Elena’s behalf. When Mort mentions her parents, Celaena shuts him down immediately and walks out.

Crown of Midnight Chapter 7

Celaena wakes with a headache and accepts that her tomb encounter the night before was real. She decides she needs to uncover what the king is planning, as Elena urged her to, and get closer to Archer, who may already know the king’s intentions if he truly has ties to the rebel movement.

Later that morning, Celaena gets dressed and heads into the city with Chaol. Their goal is a staged run-in with Archer outside a popular tea court. The plan works, and when Archer steps out, Celaena bumps into him on the steps. They catch up briefly, and it’s clear their connection goes back to her days at the Assassins’ Keep. The mood shifts when Archer brings up Sam’s death, which hits Celaena hard. She recovers and invites him to dinner the next night. Archer agrees.

On the walk back, Celaena notices Chaol is unsettled. When she calls him out, he admits it was the nickname Archer used for her. Celaena tells him she hates being called Laena, and the tension between them eases.

Crown of Midnight Chapter 8

Celaena is pulled into guard duty at a state dinner and can’t wriggle out of it without drawing suspicion. She spends the evening posted near the patio doors, watching the king and the rest of the court from across the room.

After the king and queen leave, Dorian stays behind with Roland, who spends the evening charming a cluster of young courtiers. Celaena doesn’t trust Roland and decides to warn Dorian about him before the night is over.

Celaena follows Dorian out of the Great Hall and tells him she thinks Roland has his own agenda and could easily use Dorian as a pawn. Dorian brushes her off, then turns it back on her, suggesting she used him the same way when she was competing to become King’s Champion. Their conversation tips into an argument about their past, and Celaena walks away before it goes any further.

Later, Celaena stands outside Kaltain Rompier’s prison cell. Kaltain was once a lady of the court, but after she confessed to poisoning Celaena during the competition two months ago, she’s been locked up and largely forgotten, and it shows.

Crown of Midnight Chapter 9

Celaena asks Kaltain about Roland Havilliard and whether he can be trusted on the king’s council. Kaltain is in bad shape, her wrists bearing bruise marks that suggest Duke Perrington has been visiting her without interference from the night watch.

Kaltain doesn’t give Celaena anything useful about Roland and eventually drifts into fragmented talk about crows, worsening headaches, and a feeling that she was brought to the castle to serve some purpose she can’t name. Before leaving, Celaena sets her cloak aside and walks out.

Over breakfast the next morning, Celaena tells Nehemia what she found in the dungeon. Nehemia is furious about how Kaltain is being kept, though Celaena reassures her that Chaol has already dealt with the situation.

The conversation drifts toward Terrasen and whether a court founded on honor could ever exist again, but Celaena steers away from that topic. Nehemia then mentions that Roland has been handed the job of managing her, since she’s been pushing the council about the labor camp at Calaculla. At that point, Celaena remembers she has a dinner with Archer coming up.

Crown of Midnight Chapter 10

Dorian and Chaol slip into the castle through the kennels to avoid Dorian’s younger brother Hollin, who has just returned from school and is already causing trouble. During the walk, Chaol mentions that Celaena has dinner plans with Archer Finn. Chaol is uneasy about it, and Dorian notices the tension between him and Celaena.

Chaol crosses paths with Celaena on her way out and is thrown off by her daring dress. He questions her choice, but she explains it’s intentional, since she wants Archer to assume she’s unarmed. Before leaving, she implies she won’t return until morning, and Chaol’s reaction makes it clear the thought stings.

At the restaurant, Celaena and Archer settle into easy, charged conversation over dinner. He asks how she ended up in the king’s service, and she gives a vague but convincing answer. After dinner, they share his carriage, and he invites her into his townhouse.

Celaena hesitates, and the moment shifts. Archer drops the performance and admits he resents how little control he has over his own life. He talks about dreaming of the day he can pay off his debts and finally live on his own terms.

Crown of Midnight Chapter 11

Archer draws a hidden dagger the moment Celaena approaches him, but she talks him down by explaining that the king suspects him of involvement in a rebel movement. Archer denies it and, in his panic, blurts out that a group in Rifthold is working to put Aelin Galathynius back on Terrasen’s throne. The news shakes Celaena, though she keeps her composure.

Celaena offers Archer a deal. He has four weeks to settle his affairs in the city, and in exchange, he must feed her information about the movement. Archer accepts and mentions a ball the following evening where she could slip into a client’s office and dig for more. She tells him to send the details to the castle by morning and warns that any misstep will cost him his life.

Later, Celaena stops by Chaol’s room and tells him about the ball and the rumors surrounding the lost heir, but she leaves out the more significant parts, including who Aelin is and what her own motives are. When she mentions holding off on reporting to the king, Chaol warns her to be careful, which irritates her. She snaps at him, and Chaol admits outright that he worries because he cares about her. Celaena doesn’t quite know how to respond to that.
