Queen of Shadows Chapters 61–74 Summary

This Sarah J. Maas Queen of Shadows chapter summary contains full spoilers.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 61

The group is already deep in trouble as they make their way out of Oakwald with a badly wounded Rowan. He can barely stay on his feet, and Aelin has no idea where to take an injured Fae male in a city that would sooner turn him in than help. Chaol solves the problem by suggesting Nesryn’s father’s country house, where the housekeeper’s wife works as a midwife. Aelin agrees but makes it plain that anyone who breathes a word about the group won’t live to regret it.

When the group arrives, the midwife Marta wastes no time taking charge. She spends a few hours cleaning and stitching Rowan’s wounds, and Aelin plants herself at his bedside and refuses to move. That lasts until Marta bluntly tells Aelin she’s filthy enough to infect Rowan and sends her outside to wash up.

Chaol follows Aelin out. He apologizes and admits he’d been wrong about wanting to handle things on his own terms. They reach an understanding and agree to face the fight ahead together, both of them going in when the time comes. Aelin tells Chaol she doesn’t blame him, and the conversation closes something between them.

Before dawn, the group slips away from the farmhouse and makes their way back toward Rifthold.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 62

After landing Abraxos in front of the king’s party, Manon reports that rebels ambushed the prisoner wagon in the woods, killed three of the king’s men, and were wiped out by her and the Thirteen. She makes it plain she won’t be used to ferry prisoners and has no intention of taking enemies alive going forward. Manon also tells the king he ought to send Dorian to Morath.

Manon had planned to tell the king about Aelin and the rebels by name, but she held back, reasoning that she owed Aelin a life debt.

Before leaving, Manon asks the king about his weapon, a network of giant mirrored towers built to multiply and focus Kaltain’s shadowfire across a battlefield. He shuts her down, but she already understands what it means. The weapon isn’t a tool for winning battles. It’s built to erase entire armies without a fight.

Back at Morath, Elide has spent three sleepless days waiting for an overdue supply wagon. When it finally arrives, she slips away from the kitchen and limps up to Manon’s tower to collect her hidden supplies. Vernon is already there, sitting on the bed and waiting for her.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 63

Vernon catches Elide trying to escape and cuts her arm to test for witch blood. When the wound proves she’s human, he drags her down to a dungeon cell, hinting that her mixed bloodline makes her useful to him before sealing her in total darkness.

Manon returns to Morath and is summoned by Duke Perrington. She lies about what happened during her absence, partly to protect Elide. The duke then shares intelligence files with her. Through them, Manon learns that Aelin is alive in Wendlyn, that Aedion was arrested and later rescued, and that Chaol has defected and joined the rebels. Manon concludes that Chaol came not to spy but to give Dorian a merciful death. The duke then orders her to choose a coven for the breeding program.

Afterward, Manon flies out into the mountains alone with Asterin, who reveals a secret she has carried for eighty years. As a young witch, Asterin fell in love with a human hunter and became pregnant. She returned to Blackbeak Keep to give birth, but the witchling was stillborn. The Matron beat her, denied her access to her child, branded the word “UNCLEAN” into her skin, and cast her out to die. Sorrel and Vesta found Asterin and nursed her back to health.

Asterin begs Manon to stop the Matron and the duke from weaponizing their witches and witchlings. Manon reinstates Asterin as Second and signals her intent to act, though she admits the plan is probably something quite stupid.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 64

Rowan wakes in the warehouse, still recovering from serious blood loss, to find Aelin and Aedion already deep in conversation about their Solstice plans. After Aedion gives them space, Rowan asks why Aelin let Manon go. Aelin tells him that hearing Asterin cry out for Manon reminded her too much of her own fear of losing him. Between that and not wanting to deprive someone of the person they loved, she couldn’t bring herself to let Manon die.

At breakfast, Aelin, Lysandra, and Evangeline sit together. Evangeline has grown bold and sharp-tongued, which Lysandra finds both exhausting and secretly impressive. Once Evangeline heads upstairs, Aelin slides a document across the table. It’s a letter from Clarisse confirming that both Lysandra’s and Evangeline’s debts are cleared and that their freedom is secured. Lysandra falls apart, and the two women sit with it together.

Meanwhile, Manon and Asterin spend the night in the mountains to recover. When Manon wakes, she feels an unnamed pull drawing her north. They make a quick stop at Morath for supplies, then fly hard toward Rifthold, though Manon has no clear explanation for the urgency.

Elsewhere, Elide, who has spent four days in a dungeon with no sign of rescue, has been watching for any opportunity to escape but has found none. Manon never came, and Elide has stopped expecting anyone to come.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 65

Rowan is still recovering from his injuries, slowly working to regain his strength. One night, he wakes to an unfamiliar scent and finds Lorcan on the rooftop. Lorcan asks Rowan for details about Aelin’s Solstice plans and proposes a trade. He offers a ring that will protect its wearer from the Valg in exchange for the Amulet of Orynth. Then Lorcan cuts his hand and swears on his blood that the ring is genuine, and the two make the trade.

Back inside, Aelin reveals that she and Rowan passed off a fake amulet and now hold the real Valg commander’s ring.

Later, Chaol and Aelin finally have the conversation they’ve been avoiding. They make peace with their shared history, and Aelin tells Chaol that if Dorian can’t be saved, she’ll give him a quick and merciful death. Later, Chaol and Nesryn slip into a temple to the Sea God, where Chaol promises Nesryn that he will walk out of the castle alive.

That night, with hellfire hidden nearby and the Solstice plan in place, Aelin goes to Rowan. She tells him she wants to kiss him just once, afraid of what tomorrow may bring. Rowan reassures her that whatever happens, they’ll face it together. They kiss, and before they sleep, Aelin tells Rowan that he makes her want to truly live, not merely survive.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 66

Aelin slips out early in the morning to grab food from a nearby market. A food stall seller draws her attention to a crowd gathered around a strange message on a wall, written in what appears to be Valg blood. Aelin makes her way over and reads it, then takes off at a dead run back through the streets to Chaol’s house, crashing through the door and calling out for him.

The message is addressed to the Witch Killer and carries a single claim that changes everything for Aelin. It says the human inside Dorian is still alive.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 67

Aelin and Chaol help transport the two containers of hellfire into the sewers, moving in near silence because neither of them is willing to risk a flame so close to the vats. Rowan then says his goodbyes with a handshake to Chaol and a quick, tight embrace with Aelin before Aelin turns to Aedion. The cousins exchange their pledges for Terrasen, for their family, for Marion, and for each other.

Aedion kneels and offers Aelin the Sword of Orynth as a formal act of fealty, then rises to take his place beside Rowan. Aelin rallies the group forward, saying, “Let’s go rattle the stars.”

Queen of Shadows Chapter 68

Lysandra and Evangeline are making their way out of Rifthold by carriage, but the solstice crowds have clogged the streets, and their progress is painfully slow.

Below the city, Rowan and Aedion move through the sewers toward the castle, each hauling dangerous materials for the mission ahead. They pass through old, rusted gates etched with Wyrdmarks and push deeper into the castle catacombs.

Above ground, Aelin leads Chaol through the streets in chains, posing as his captor to get them both past the guards. When they reach the castle fence, they find sixteen of Chaol’s men strung up along the iron bars. Their captors clearly tortured them before killing them. Chaol recognizes Ress and Brullo among the dead and is gutted by the sight, blaming himself entirely. He tells Aelin he wants to change the plan, and she agrees without hesitation.

Aelin and Chaol approach the gates together, and Aelin fully steps into her old role. She tells the guards that the King’s Champion has returned and brought them something valuable, using Chaol’s chains as her way in.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 69

Aelin leads Chaol through the palace in chains, posing as Celaena returning early from a mission abroad. Aelin has hidden her father’s sword under her cloak, and Wyrdmarks written in Chaol’s blood cover her skin to mask any trace of Aelin’s true heritage from the Valg demons accompanying them as an escort.

Before the king in his council room, Aelin and Chaol stand together, and Dorian is there too, standing silent beside the throne with a collar around his neck. Seeing Aelin and Chaol stirs something faintly within Dorian, but whatever remains of him shuts down almost immediately.

Aelin plays the dutiful Champion and presents the king with two forged seal rings, claiming they’re proof she killed the King and Crown Prince of Wendlyn. The king asks Aelin about the timing of her return and where she was during Narrok’s attack, and she deflects both questions without breaking her cover.

When the king asks about Chaol, Aelin tells him that Chaol had been waiting for her at the docks and that she made him confess to his part in the conspiracy. The king seems to weigh everything Aelin tells him, and just when it looks like the plan might hold, he calls her Aelin.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 70

Rowan and Aedion creep through the tunnels beneath the castle, carrying hellfire meant to bring down the clock tower. The wyrdstone in the walls hits them hard, causing nosebleeds and crushing headaches, but they manage to set the fuses and start pulling back. Then seven Wyrdhounds drop from the ceiling. Lorcan had lied about killing the Wyrdhounds and had deliberately directed them to Rowan’s scent instead.

Up in the throne room, Aelin faces the king with Chaol playing the role of her captive. The king already knows exactly who Aelin is. She stalls, waiting for the explosion below, while the king toys with both of them.

To prove his control, the king turns on Dorian, using dark magic to punish him. Chaol breaks and pleads for Dorian’s life, but the king has no intention of letting his son go free.

When the noon bells ring, Aelin pulls out the Eye of Elena, a stone powerful enough to unlock Erawan’s tomb. The king is clearly rattled. But the tower is still standing.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 71

Rowan and Aedion are backed against a wall as a pack of Wyrdhounds closes in, fighting to stay alive while losing ground on the fuse they need to reach. The clock tower strikes noon and passes before Rowan and Aedion can get to it, which means the plan to bring the tower down has fallen apart. Aelin is left on her own in the castle above, with no backup coming.

Upstairs, Aelin faces the king head-on and dangles the Eye of Elena as leverage, threatening to destroy it and keep Erawan sealed away forever. The king plays along and calls Dorian forward instead of negotiating, sending his Valg-possessed son after Aelin. Chaol holds his ground to slow the king down and buy Aelin time to run.

Aelin tears through the castle’s upper halls with Dorian right behind her. Ice shoots out from the walls and frosts over every surface as Dorian gains on her. She follows the routes she memorized from Chaol’s maps and pushes higher into the spires, trying to stay ahead of the cold.

On a glass bridge connecting two of the towers, the ice hits the windows, and they explode outward. Shards of glass catch Aelin across the back. She spots the broken window frame and jumps through it.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 72

Aelin leaps from a high point, lands hard on a glass bridge below, and sprints for the tower door with Dorian right behind her. She races up the stairs inside the spire while the cold from Dorian’s pursuit bleeds through the broken door below. She makes it to the top.

Meanwhile, Chaol has stayed behind to face the king alone. He knows he isn’t walking away from this, and that’s fine with him. He stands his ground as the king unleashes wave after wave of dark magic. Chaol’s protective wards hold at first, then start to give. When the final wave hits, it overwhelms him completely. He dies, having given Aelin the time she needed to get Dorian out.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 73

Dorian advances on the woman across a narrow bridge, driven by an overwhelming urge to kill her. The woman is bleeding and retreating from him, her hands raised. When he gets close enough to smell her blood, she says the name Dorian. He doesn’t recognize the name, and he’s still going to kill her.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 74

Aelin is on a bridge, stalling for time while the sun slowly moves around the tower. The Valg demon inside Dorian threatens Aelin and closes in, eventually stabbing her in the side.

Underneath the castle, Rowan and Aedion are fighting off Wyrdhounds to reach a fuse that will bring down the clock tower. Lorcan shows up and helps them finish off the last creatures. Aedion lights the fuse, and the three of them run, but when the dust settles, they find themselves trapped between a collapsed tunnel and a hundred Valg soldiers coming from behind.

Elsewhere, Manon and Asterin feel magic flood back into the world mid-flight. Kaltain feels the magic too.

On the bridge, Aelin is badly wounded and crawling away from Dorian, begging him to remember Chaol and Sorscha. Suddenly, the tower goes down, magic returns, and Aelin’s wound seals itself shut. She then reveals she had slipped Athril’s ring onto Dorian’s finger when she grabbed his hand.

The ring burns the demon and starts to glow, and the Valg prince begins losing his grip on Dorian. When the Valg prince hurls a wave of ice at her, Aelin throws everything she has back at him.
