Queen of Shadows Chapters 46–60 Summary
This Sarah J. Maas Queen of Shadows chapter summary contains full spoilers.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 46
Aelin has written the day off before it even starts. She rides across the city with Rowan and Aedion, and the atmosphere in the carriage is tense. What Rowan said the night before is still under her skin, and she puts as much space between them as she can. Rowan is terse whenever she speaks to him, while Aedion keeps his head down.
An hour earlier, news came in that Arobynn had been found dead. Three assassins, Tern, Harding, and Mullin, have stepped in to run the Guild and the estate in the meantime, and they want Aelin there right away. She’d already figured out what happened the night before, so the confirmation feels more like a release than a shock. Lysandra went through with it and came out the other side.
When the carriage pulls up to the Assassins’ Keep, Aelin sits still for a moment and composes herself. She makes an internal promise that this is the very last time she’ll put on the persona of Celaena Sardothien. Then something shifts inside her. The change is stark enough that Aedion can’t find a trace of the person he’s gotten to know in her expression. She tells both men to stay out of her way, gets out of the carriage, and kicks her way through the front doors of the Keep.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 47
Aelin arrives and confronts three of Arobynn’s assassins about his death. She learns that Lysandra was discovered next to the body. Aelin inspects the murder scene, spots a boot print in the blood and a window lock broken from the outside, and establishes her own alibi when the assassins reveal they’d been watching her house all night.
The Master of the Bank arrives to read Arobynn’s will. Aelin is named the sole beneficiary of his entire fortune, the Assassins’ Keep, and the Guild. She expels the three assassins on the spot but offers to sell them the house and Guild at face value, giving them three hours to raise the money.
Once alone with Rowan and Aedion, Aelin reveals that she’d secretly switched the will during her nighttime visits to the bank, redirecting Arobynn’s entire fortune toward raising an army for Terrasen. She also admits that she deliberately drew Arobynn into investing in the Pits to ensure he earned back every coin she had cost him.
Aelin then takes the Sword of Orynth from Aedion and decapitates Arobynn’s corpse.
Queen of Shadows Part 2: Queen of Light
Queen of Shadows Chapter 48
Manon beats Asterin in the breakfast hall as punishment for Asterin’s outburst about the Yellowlegs coven, and no one in the Thirteen says a word about it. Manon is then summoned to a meeting with the duke, who demands that she hand over a Blackbeak coven just as he used the Yellowlegs before. He also tells Manon to ready the Thirteen for a mission.
That mission turns out to be an aerial raid on a wild tribe camped in the White Fang Mountains, a tribe Manon herself had scouted for the duke. She flies out with the Thirteen and the duke, carrying Kaltain. When they reach the village, the duke orders Kaltain to use her shadowfire without even landing first. The dark flames tear through the camp, killing some villagers and leaving others screaming or unconscious, while the horses scatter in every direction.
When Kaltain finally collapses from the effort, the duke tells Manon to land and finish what the fire started. She does, drawing her sword as the surviving villagers look up at Manon in terror.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 49
Aelin finishes signing over the Keep and slips away to the river. Aedion follows, and they have an honest conversation about her years under Arobynn. He tells her he wishes he’d been there and challenges her habit of shouldering everything alone. She brushes most of it off but opens up enough to share her plan. Aelin intends to restore magic, bring down the king, and eliminate Dorian if it comes to that.
Back at the warehouse that night, Rowan mentions that he went looking for Lorcan but came up empty. He tries to revisit the argument he and Aelin had the previous night, but Aelin shuts it down and goes to sleep.
The next day, Aelin and Lysandra dress up as wealthy socialites and visit a bakery to question a worker named Nelly. With some well-placed coin, Nelly confirms that survivors from the Shadow Market fled into catacombs beneath the sewers.
Aelin then takes Rowan, Aedion, and Chaol into the burned out Shadow Market ruins and reveals what she’s actually been after. An opium dealer who operated there had a secret cache of hellfire hidden in the catacombs below, and Aelin plans to use it to blow up the clock tower. Since the dealer was recently killed by the king’s men, the supply is now sitting unguarded. She finds the grate leading down and drops into the catacombs to claim the hellfire.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 50
The group descends into a bone temple beneath the Shadow Market. The walls and ceiling are built entirely from human remains, and each bone bears a confession from a murderer, thief, or worse. The group splits up to search for a hidden hellfire supply.
Aelin and Rowan push deeper into the tunnels, and Aelin starts to wonder whether the temple was once connected to a god of truth and whether Gavin himself had worshipped there. She draws Damaris, and the moment the sword nears the back wall, the carved Wyrdmarks rearrange themselves. At the center of the wall is the Eye of Elena.
Aelin reads the inscription and realizes it’s Gavin’s deathbed confession. He never killed Erawan. The Eye only put the Valg king into a deep sleep, and Gavin’s allies sealed Erawan’s body inside an iron sarcophagus buried beneath a mountain. A noble family stood guard over the site in perpetuity.
Rowan then recognizes that “Black Mountains” in the Old Language translates to Morath, which is exactly where the king has been funneling his forces. The group pieces it together. The king is likely planning to wake Erawan, possibly using the Wyrdkey to break open the tomb. Aelin resolves to destroy the keys before that can happen, and Aedion confirms that he found the hellfire.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 51
Manon calls the Thirteen together and asks them to nominate a Blackbeak coven to hand over to the duke. The Thirteen refuse as a unit, with Asterin speaking for them, saying the witches aren’t tools to use and that permanent exile from the Wastes is preferable to giving up their sisters. The tension escalates toward violence between Manon and Asterin, but before anything breaks, a golden haired young man with a dark collar walks into the room uninvited.
The young man floods the space with an unnatural darkness and begins mentally and physically attacking several of the Thirteen. Manon fights through it and takes him down, with Asterin helping to restrain him. For a brief moment, the young man surfaces, tells Manon his name is Roland, and begs her to end his life before the demon regains control. She kills him.
When the darkness lifts, Manon notices a pattern. The witches who suffered during the attack all have ordinary eye colors, while the witches who came through unaffected, including Manon, all have gold flecked black eyes. She files this observation away and orders the body removed.
Manon then tracks down Kaltain alone on a staircase and asks her for answers about the shadowfire and the collar. Kaltain gives Manon nothing useful and burns her with her power before walking away without a word.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 52
Nesryn rejoins Aelin’s group after they visited the Sin Eater’s temple. Nesryn brings grim news from Ren. A massive Valg army is gathering at Morath, and the king has secretly assembled an aerial force of Ironteeth witches riding wyverns. After a brief discussion of potential allies, Aelin cuts to the point. The enemy is waiting for her to move first. Before parting, Aelin thanks Nesryn for all she’s risking, and Nesryn responds with “Long live the queen.”
On the way home, Lorcan ambushes Aelin and Rowan and holds a knife to Aelin’s throat. He demands the Wyrdkey, then reveals that the ring Aelin gave Maeve was an artifact made by the goddess Mala that protected its wearer from Valg enslavement. Maeve killed her former lover Athril to obtain it and now holds the immunity Aelin gave away. Lorcan left Maeve’s service believing her pursuit of the Wyrdkeys would destroy her, and he offers to trade the ring for their key. Rowan doesn’t trust the offer, and Lorcan vanishes before they settle anything.
Back at the apartment, Rowan admits he nearly handed over the key when Lorcan held the knife to Aelin’s throat. He also tells Aelin that he missed her during their time apart and would find her even in death. The two acknowledge that something has shifted between them but decide to hold off, with the weight of everything ahead hanging over them.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 53
The demon prince stands in a dungeon cell where a prisoner has broken down on the floor. He breathes in the man’s anguish the way someone might breathe in something they know they shouldn’t want. He hates himself for it. But the pain sustains him in a way nothing else can, and he has nothing and nobody left. So he keeps going. And somewhere along the way, the guilt stops being louder than the hunger.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 54
Manon receives a letter that infuriates her. She tells Elide that she and the Thirteen will leave in three days for somewhere in the North, then throws the letter into the fire without offering any further details. Elide has been hiding food and supplies beneath her pallet and plans to slip away on a supply wagon while Manon and the Thirteen are gone.
The mission would take Manon and her Thirteen to Oakwald Forest in Adarlan, where they must arrive early and secure the area before a meeting with the King of Adarlan. The king wants to see the weapon Manon’s grandmother has been developing and to inspect Manon himself. Manon resents the arrangement but recognizes it as a rare chance to face the man who ordered the destruction of witches and the experiments performed on them. She rides out on Abraxos with the Thirteen behind her.
Meanwhile, Kaltain is biding her time. She’d been possessed by a Valg prince. Over time, she went so still and withdrew so deeply into herself that the demon stopped noticing her. In that darkness, Kaltain discovered shadowfire. She used the shadowfire to eat away at the prince piece by piece until he was essentially gone.
Kaltain still wears her collar and complies with what others ask of her, but the prince no longer controls her. She’s waiting for the right moment to act. She no longer thinks of herself by her real name. Instead, she sees herself only as something like the embodiment of death itself.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 55
Rowan wakes Aelin just before dawn with word that the warehouse has been broken into. They arm up and head out, only to find Evangeline huddled on the stairwell landing, shaken but unhurt. She tells them that the king’s men arrived with a letter Arobynn left behind, one that exposed Lysandra as a shape-shifter.
The king’s men arrested Lysandra and tried to take Evangeline too, but Lysandra held them off long enough for Evangeline to escape. Lysandra’s last instruction was for Evangeline to find Aelin. Aelin decides they need to clear out of the apartment and arranges for Nesryn’s father to watch over Evangeline in the meantime.
Shortly after, Chaol and Nesryn arrive with news of their own. One of Ren’s contacts has word of a meeting the following day in Oakwald involving the king, Dorian, and the Wing Leader of the aerial cavalry, with a new prisoner set to be delivered to Morath.
Aelin is convinced Lysandra is that prisoner and pushes hard for Chaol and Nesryn to go into the tunnels after her immediately, reasoning they’d draw less suspicion than anyone else. Chaol disagrees, believing an ambush is the smarter move. Aelin begs Chaol and Nesryn, afraid of what Lysandra is already enduring. Nesryn takes Aelin’s hand and promises they’ll bring Lysandra back, and Chaol looks Aelin in the eye and swears it’ll never happen again.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 56
Aelin, Rowan, Aedion, Nesryn, and Chaol hole up in a rundown inn to go over their plan. They study a map of the meeting location near the temple of Temis just inside Oakwald Forest and talk through the risks. Aelin sends Evangeline ahead with Nesryn’s father for safekeeping. Then the harder questions come up. What happens if Lysandra is collared? What if Dorian shows up? Aelin makes clear that no one acts without her approval, and Chaol is firm that no one is to touch Dorian.
The group agrees to use Wyrdmarks as a shield against the Valg prince. Rowan lays out the tactical approach. They move in fast just before the meeting, get into position, and find any enemy scouts before making a move. Freeing Lysandra takes priority over everything, and the king only becomes a target if the group is certain it can finish the job cleanly.
That night, Aelin can’t sleep. She tells Rowan she can’t lose another friend, and he reassures her. Their conversation turns flirtatious, with Rowan teasing Aelin before she flips it back on him. She settles back, closes her eyes, and feels steadier than she has in a while. Whatever comes next, Aelin won’t be facing it alone.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 57
Aelin, Rowan, Aedion, Chaol, and Nesryn move through the forest in silence. When they climb into the trees for a better view, they spot a meadow with thirteen saddled wyverns and thirteen witches. Rowan identifies the white-haired witch as the Wing Leader.
The sight rattles Aelin. She knows Terrasen has no realistic chance against a force like that, but Rowan steadies her by reminding her that she’s brought down a Matron before. She refocuses on the immediate concern and says they need to get Lysandra out and keep her far from the wyverns.
Rowan hears horses approaching from the north and wyvern wings approaching from the west, so the group moves into position near the clearing. Before they split off, Aelin warns Chaol not to act on impulse no matter what he witnesses, because the Valg princes accompanying the king are more than capable of killing any of them.
The Wing Leader emerges to meet the Blackbeak Matron, who arrives with a large covered wagon. The king’s procession rides in next. Dorian rides with them, his father at his side, a dark collar at Dorian’s throat, and his face emptied of everything that once made him who he was.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 58
Manon and the Thirteen had scouted the forest clearing before the meeting with the king to ensure they control the location. Then the Matron arrives first with a covered wagon carrying a secret weapon. When the king’s party rides in, Manon spots a prison wagon holding a female prisoner and a Valg possessed man riding near the king.
The Matron presents Manon as the Wing Leader of the aerial cavalry. Manon refuses to grovel, fires off a few sharp remarks, and the king laughs. He doesn’t let Manon see the weapon and leaves her with his son Dorian, who’s clearly possessed.
When Manon taunts Dorian, the Valg entity inside him panics at her proximity. For one unguarded moment, the real Dorian surfaces and says his own name before the darkness swallows him again. Aelin and Chaol, watching from the brush, catch the moment too.
Then Aedion and Nesryn send the wyverns into an uproar. While every guard turns to look, Aelin frees Lysandra from the prison wagon. Rowan takes care of the guards and hides them inside the wagon. The extraction is done in under two minutes, and the king’s party rides off none the wiser.
Once the king’s party is gone, the Matron strikes Manon twice across the face and orders her to obey the duke without question. Then the Matron sends Manon into the painted wagon to see the weapon for herself. Aelin takes that as her moment to leave, but when she finds Lysandra waiting in the trees, Chaol is already gone.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 59
Dorian, still under the demon prince’s control, had briefly glimpsed a golden-eyed witch named Manon before the prince dragged him back into torment.
Meanwhile, Chaol charges through the trees, intending to kill Dorian, but he stumbles into a clearing where thirteen witches and their wyverns are waiting.
Aelin and Rowan track Chaol down and arrive to find Manon holding him with her iron nails pressed to his neck, threatening to hand him over to the king. Aelin steps forward, drops her sword, and offers herself as the prize instead, introducing herself as the Queen of Terrasen. The name gives Manon pause. After a tense exchange, Manon decides the situation is more trouble than it’s worth and orders her coven to mount up.
Aelin pushes her luck by bringing up Baba Yellowlegs and exposing the witch-killer scars on her chest. Manon lunges at Aelin in fury but slams into an invisible wall and freezes.
The group runs. They head for a ravine with a small temple on a rock spire, reachable only by two chain-and-wood bridges. They cross one at a time. Manon breaks free and gives chase, leaping onto the bridge while Rowan is still crossing it. Once Aelin reaches the temple platform, a witch fires an arrow at her from the far side, and Rowan throws himself in front of Aelin, taking the shot through the shoulder.
Queen of Shadows Chapter 60
Rowan takes an arrow through the shoulder, just shy of his heart, in a blow meant for Aelin. She uses their blood oath to push Rowan across the bridge to safety, then stays behind to deal with Manon and the remaining witches herself.
Aelin cuts the chains of the first bridge, cutting the rest of the witches off on the other side of the ravine, and faces Manon alone. Rather than meeting Manon head-on, Aelin keeps moving, using the temple pillars to absorb Manon’s strikes until one finally falls and brings the roof down on top of Manon.
The island starts to collapse, and Aelin runs for the second bridge. She spots Manon still alive beneath the rubble and turns back. Aelin pulls the debris off Manon and gets her moving just before the island drops into the ravine, and Aedion and Chaol pull both women over the edge to safety.
Aelin immediately goes to Rowan, dropping to her knees beside him while Chaol works to slow the bleeding from Rowan’s shoulder wound. Manon briefly loses consciousness. When she comes around, Aelin’s group is already gone. Asterin and Sorrel land with the wyverns and rush to her. Manon is left sitting with the fact that she owes a life debt to the very person she’d been trying to kill.
