Queen of Shadows Chapters 31–45 Summary

This Sarah J. Maas Queen of Shadows chapter summary contains full spoilers.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 31

Manon storms into Perrington’s war tent demanding access to the Yellowlegs coven. Inside, she finds Kaltain using a dark ability called shadowfire on a kneeling soldier, inflicting intense agony without leaving a mark on the soldier’s skin. Kaltain explains that shadowfire had lain dormant inside her and has only recently surfaced.

Perrington ends the demonstration, sends Kaltain to rest, and then kills the soldier on the spot, a clear signal to Manon that asking too many questions has consequences. He refuses Manon access to the Yellowlegs, saying only that the experiments went as planned. When Manon challenges him, he threatens to send Valg princes to her barracks to thin out her numbers.

Manon retreats outwardly but decides privately to report everything to her grandmother. Before leaving, Perrington reveals that Manon’s grandmother has been collaborating with the other High Witches to produce weapons, something she never disclosed to Manon.

Meanwhile, Elide had spotted someone in her room and slipped away to the aerie. She fell asleep against Abraxos and woke to find Manon and some of the Thirteen nearby, speaking quietly about shadowfire and their defenses. Elide tries to creep out unnoticed, but just as she reaches the door, Manon speaks directly to her, making it clear that she’d known all along that Elide was there.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 32

Manon returns to the aerie to find Elide waiting there after fleeing her own room, which Elide suspected someone had entered. Manon wastes no time putting Elide to work. She tells Elide to infiltrate a chamber beneath the castle where the duke is holding a coven of Yellowlegs witches and report back on what’s happening inside. In return, Elide gets Manon’s protection and a threat if she refuses or talks out of turn.

Over the next three days, Elide works in the laundry and figures out how linen deliveries reach the restricted chamber. She tracks the laundress who makes those runs so Elide can use the same route as cover.

Before Elide gets the chance, she stumbles across her uncle Vernon in a stairwell with Kaltain cornered against the wall. Elide cuts in, tells Vernon that Kaltain is wanted by the Wing Leader, and walks Kaltain out of the situation. Vernon lets them go but makes it clear he knows exactly what Elide is.

Elide returns to Manon’s tower and admits that she didn’t get into the chamber. Then Elide makes a request of her own and asks Manon to get her some poison.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 33

Aelin makes Aedion spar with Rowan to prove he’s fit enough to fight again. Aedion pushes through his still-healing wound and ends up on the floor with Rowan’s broken sparring stick at his throat. Rowan uses the moment to tell Aedion to obey Aelin’s commands and to watch how he speaks to her.

Lysandra arrives and tells Aelin that Arobynn found out the city’s missing people were transported south to Morath in prison wagons. She also warns Aelin that Arobynn has started researching his clients’ family histories for traces of magical heritage, which is worth keeping in mind given Aelin’s abilities.

Aelin asks how much longer Lysandra is stuck in debt to Clarisse, and she tells Lysandra plainly that she’s willing to make Clarisse disappear if Lysandra ever gives the word.

Chaol comes by to review maps of the castle and the sewer system. Aelin asks whether he knew about the Morath wagons, and he admits he didn’t. She tells him to go after them and warns him to avoid the sewers because something worse than Valg soldiers is now moving through them. He agrees to pursue the wagons and leaves. The question of what happens when Aelin moves to free magic and what that means for Dorian remains unspoken between them.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 34

Aelin spends the day showing Rowan around Rifthold, walking him through the markets, stopping at a bakery, and wandering down to the docks. Along the way, she points out the king’s guards stationed around the city so Rowan can determine which guards have been taken over by Valg demons.

Things turn heavy when Aelin and Rowan pass through a flower market, and Rowan spots a young dark-haired girl selling flowers. The girl reminds him of Lyria, his dead mate, and he says that he never deserved her. Aelin tells Rowan that she felt the same way about Sam.

To pull Rowan out of it, Aelin takes him to the Royal Theater, where she used to sneak in through the roof to listen to performances when she was younger. When Rowan asks about a pianoforte, Aelin ends up playing for him on the stage. The piece sounds triumphant and alive, and Rowan is moved by the music. They spend the next hour with Aelin teaching Rowan the basics before they hear someone coming and leave.

On the way back, Aelin stops at the Royal Bank to pick up money while Rowan waits outside, which irritates Rowan. He asks Aelin how she plans to fund everything, but she brushes him off and tells him it’ll be handled without giving him any real answer.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 35

Chaol and Nesryn lead a rebel ambush that wipes out roughly two dozen Valg and frees a large group of prisoners from two wagons. It’s their most successful rescue yet, and they suffer no losses.

In the aftermath, Chaol tries to smooth things over with Nesryn by suggesting they go for a drink to celebrate. Nesryn tells him that he only seeks her out when it suits him, but she agrees to go anyway. The moment doesn’t linger, and they move on to bigger concerns.

The group starts debating what’s behind the sudden surge in Valg activity. Nesryn argues that whatever the king is building toward started long before Aelin arrived two months ago. One of the rebel leaders, Sen, suggests they cut their losses, abandon Rifthold, and push toward Terrasen. Chaol refuses to leave the city behind.

Meanwhile, Aelin waits for Rowan to fall asleep, arms herself with two blades, including the ancient sword Damaris, and slips out of the apartment alone in the middle of the night.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 36

Aelin sets a trap for Lorcan by sneaking into the sewers and faking a conversation with herself, pretending she’s hiding a valuable key. She leads Lorcan deeper into the tunnels, slips back up to the street, and waits while he stumbles into a group of Valg commanders and their Wyrdhound overseer.

Lorcan catches up to Aelin in an alley and pins her against a wall, furious. Aelin manages to talk her way free by pressing a blade somewhere Lorcan really doesn’t want it. Rowan shows up shortly after and holds a knife to Lorcan’s throat.

During the standoff, Lorcan warns that Maeve will back the King of Adarlan if Rowan kills him, then twists the knife further by taunting Rowan about being bound to a mortal woman who’ll grow old and die.

Aelin and Rowan let Lorcan go, but Aelin makes clear that she hasn’t forgotten what Lorcan did to Rowan in Doranelle and intends to make him answer for it eventually.

Back at the warehouse, Rowan confronts Aelin about sneaking out alone and tells her he wants Aelin to include him next time. She brings up Lorcan’s comments about her aging, but Rowan shuts down the topic quickly. He spends the rest of the night keeping watch, not putting it past Lorcan to retaliate before morning.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 37

Dorian is forced by the demon to witness the torture of prisoners in the dungeons every day. He vaguely recognizes some of the prisoners but can never hold onto their names. The king never questions the prisoners, and the suffering seems to be the point. One prisoner spots Dorian and pleads for mercy, but Dorian is powerless to intervene. The demon feeds on the pain and grows stronger with each visit, and the cycle continues without end.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 38

Lysandra shows up unannounced during dinner, and Rowan is the first to identify her as a shape-shifter. The revelation catches both Aelin and Aedion off guard. Lysandra confirms it and fills them in. She discovered her ability as a young child, and her mother threw her out after Lysandra accidentally shifted in front of her. Lysandra spent years surviving on the streets of Rifthold by using her ability to blend in and get by.

When magic disappeared, Lysandra became locked into a borrowed face and has no memory of her original appearance. Aelin takes it in stride, partly because she’d been keeping her own secrets from Lysandra all along.

Before leaving, Lysandra hands over a package Aelin had requested and informs the group that Arobynn will be calling in his favor the following night, expecting everyone at dinner.

The next morning, a formal invitation arrives from Arobynn alongside a bottle of scented skin oil that he expects Aelin to wear. Aelin recognizes it as a control move but complies, since recovering the Amulet of Orynth remains the priority. Rowan notes that the invitation itself serves as a warning, as Arobynn has clearly identified every member of the group.

Aedion wants to join Aelin and Rowan for a sewer run to capture a Valg commander beforehand. But Aelin refuses because his wounds haven’t fully healed, so Aelin and Rowan head out alone.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 39

Aelin and Rowan survey the destruction Lorcan left behind in the sewers. Aelin admits that she needed Lorcan out of the way and that the Wyrdhounds will now hunt him across the city. With Lorcan distracted, Aelin reveals her real intention. She plans to enter the castle through the sewer and bring down the clock tower to free magic.

Later, Aelin and Rowan ambush a Valg patrol and drag the possessed commander to a cellar for questioning. Aelin reaches the human host beneath the demon, a man named Stevan from Melisande. Stevan confirms that a Valg prince has taken over Dorian’s body and that, unlike a lesser demon, a prince would’ve destroyed whatever was left of the host long ago. Having endured more than he can bear, Stevan offers Aelin anything she wants in exchange for his death.

That night, Aelin disappears without a word and returns in the early hours smelling of smoke, telling Rowan nothing about where she’d been. The next morning, Aelin asks Rowan to accompany her somewhere before the evening’s business.

Aelin takes Rowan to a graveyard by the river where Sam Cortland is buried. She sits beside Sam’s headstone, tells him everything she never got to say, and tells him she loved him. Rowan gives Aelin space, then walks over and places one of her pebbles on Sam’s grave himself.

Then Aelin tells Rowan that she plans to return to Arobynn’s after dinner and kill him in his sleep. Recovering the Amulet of Orynth was the end goal, but it was also a distraction. When Rowan asks whether Aelin feels ready, she says she doesn’t have the option of not being ready.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 40

Elide spends two days earning the kitchen staff’s trust before poisoning a handful of rolls in a bread delivery, ensuring that a specific laundress receives one because Elide needs her out of commission.

When a third of the laundresses fall ill the next day, Elide volunteers to fill in at the sick woman’s station, the station that handles laundry from somewhere deep beneath the Keep. She talks her way past the guards, descends into a cold subterranean hallway, and stages a fall outside the chamber door to steal a look inside when the door opens. Inside stands an inhuman collared man radiating darkness, and behind him is the room itself.

Back upstairs, Elide reports to Manon, Asterin, and Sorrel. The Yellowlegs witches are strapped to tables, have already delivered at least one child each, and are close to giving birth again. Their offspring are monstrous creatures, nothing like the witches who bore them.

Asterin breaks. She screams at Manon for allowing it, draws blood during the confrontation, and loses her rank on the spot. Manon warns Asterin that any move to free the Yellowlegs witches will cost her life.

Afterward, Elide bandages Manon’s arm. The two share an honest conversation about Elide’s mother, who died protecting Aelin Galathynius, and about Elide’s years-long belief that Aelin is still alive. Manon asks whether monsters are born or made. Elide turns the question back on Manon.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 41

Aelin readies herself for the evening by applying almond-scented oil, something Arobynn has deliberately arranged to mark her with his scent and get under Rowan’s skin. She pushes through it, reminding herself that the evening will be over soon.

While Aelin finishes getting ready, Rowan pulls Aedion up to the roof for a word. Both men understand that Aelin plans to go back and kill Arobynn after the dinner. If Aelin were to leave it up to them, Aedion makes it clear that he wants to be the one to finish Arobynn off, and Rowan agrees without argument.

The Valg commander is already secured in the back of the carriage, leaving only Aelin’s arrival before they can depart. When Aelin steps out dressed for the evening, both men are struck by the sight of her. She and Rowan trade a few words before he offers her his arm, and they head out together.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 42

Aelin arrives at the Assassins’ Keep with Rowan and Aedion, bringing a chained, hooded Valg commander named Stevan as payment of a debt to Arobynn. Arobynn leads the group into the dungeons, then dismisses Rowan and Aedion so Arobynn can interrogate Stevan alone with Aelin.

Under pointed questioning and knife work, Stevan reveals how the king controls his Valg soldiers. The soldiers wear enchanted black rings, and the king binds them further through a blood ritual that lets him direct their actions at will. Stevan also mentions that the Valg are combing the city for Aedion. Aelin signals that Stevan has said enough, and Arobynn slices off Stevan’s ring finger to claim the ring before killing him, intending to study how it works.

Upstairs, the group dines with Lysandra, who kept Rowan and Aedion company while they waited. Arobynn steers the conversation toward Aelin’s past, makes pointed remarks about his history with Aelin, and claims he spent months trying to free her from Endovier. Lysandra supports the story, though she’s been secretly meeting with Aelin’s group behind Arobynn’s back. Then Arobynn confronts Aelin about the damage she’s been doing to his business.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 43

Arobynn confronts Aelin about everything she’s been doing behind his back, including wrecking the Vaults, freeing Aedion while impersonating one of Arobynn’s clients, and engineering a situation that made Arobynn’s associate Cormac look like a rebel sympathizer to the king. Aelin plays innocent but doesn’t bother denying much.

When Arobynn asks what it will take for Aelin to stop, she gets what she wanted. They move to a private sitting room, and she lays out her terms. Arobynn tries to justify his past cruelty as tough love, but Aelin isn’t buying it. Aelin wants the Amulet of Orynth and access to Arobynn’s men and resources, and she makes clear she can expose him to the king if he refuses.

Arobynn counters with threats of his own, but Aelin reveals she’s already set up a fail-safe. If Aelin and her companions don’t return, incriminating messages go straight to the castle. That ends the standoff, and Arobynn hands over the amulet.

The moment Aelin touches it, she privately confirms it’s a Wyrdkey, something far more powerful and unsettling than she was prepared for. She puts it on, tells Arobynn they’ll meet in the morning to make plans, and heads for the door.

On Aelin’s way out, Arobynn slips the Wyrdstone ring onto her finger.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 44

After placing the Wyrdstone ring on Aelin’s finger, Arobynn appears to have Aelin under his control. He tests her by making Aelin smile, speak, and declare her love for him, then sends her home and orders her back the following morning.

At the warehouse, Aelin removes the ring and tells Rowan and Aedion the whole thing was staged. The ring was a counterfeit, part of a plan Aelin had set in motion weeks earlier. Aelin had identified a Valg commander who had the least control over the human body it possessed and offered the human a peaceful death in exchange for feeding Arobynn false information about how the rings functioned. Aedion is angry at being left out, but Aelin explains that she needed to see what Arobynn would actually do before moving against him.

Shortly after, Aelin and Rowan hide the real amulet under a floorboard and place a replica on Aelin’s vanity as misdirection.

Later on the rooftop, Aelin tells Rowan she’s given Lysandra permission to kill Arobynn. Aelin admits feeling empty about it despite everything Arobynn did to her. The mood changes when Aelin reaches up to touch Rowan’s face, and Rowan recoils, telling her not to touch him that way.

Meanwhile, in Arobynn’s bed, Lysandra draws a stiletto from beneath the pillow and slits Arobynn’s throat.

Queen of Shadows Chapter 45

A crowned man demands to know where the rebels are hiding as a prisoner endures torture for information. The prisoner insists he doesn’t know, but the interrogation doesn’t stop. The demon controlling Dorian’s body forces him to watch helplessly as his own hands carry out the torture. Dorian is horrified by what he’s doing, but he has no way to stop it. The prisoner begs for mercy. The torture continues anyway.
