House of Earth and Blood Chapters 72–84 Summary
This chapter-by-chapter summary of House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas contains spoilers.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 72
Ruhn and his friends pull Bryce out of the river after killing the monster. Bryce has several deep scratches but avoided the creature’s poisonous fangs. Declan seals Bryce’s wounds so they won’t scar.
The group tries to convince Bryce to stay somewhere safe, but Bryce refuses. Bryce deletes Ruhn’s information from her phone and tells Ruhn their relationship is over because he used the law to control her.
Back at her apartment, Bryce finds the sunball cap she had kept hidden. In the bathroom mirror, she checks her tattoo and feels relieved to see it undamaged. Alone, she carries the weight of everything she has lost—her friends, her necklace, and Hunt—and struggles to find her way out of the grief.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 73
Hunt arrives at the Summit in magical shackles as Sandriel’s captive. During the processional, Hunt recognizes the healer from the clinic as Queen Hypaxia, which catches him off guard since Ruhn had no idea who she was when they met.
The six Asteri appear on the video screens to recognize Hypaxia as the new Queen. They open with pointed remarks about the ongoing conflict and suggest Hunt may be called to give evidence later.
Ruhn contacts Hunt through a secret telepathic ability and promises to help if the chance comes up. Ruhn mentions that Bryce has gone back to her job at the gallery. Hunt doesn’t ask for any more details about her. The Summit gets underway with Micah in charge and Hunt in chains.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 74
Bryce struggles with the emptiness of her home. She sleeps in Hunt’s bedroom, wears his clothes, and watches the news, hoping to catch a glimpse of his face. Bryce has looked into every legal avenue to free Hunt but found nothing. She refuses to believe the cruel things he said when they parted because she knows he was only trying to keep her safe.
Isaiah sends Bryce the white gem from the barge with a short note saying that Hunt is deeply remorseful. Lehabah stays close as Bryce reads, and the two promise to face whatever comes next together.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 75
The Summit meetings are mostly dull. Sandriel focuses on pushing the Asteri’s new military demands for more troops. Ruhn spends much of his time watching Hypaxia. Ruhn recently realized she was the healer he met at the shop and spoke with Hypaxia privately on the first day. She visited the city in secret to look into the darkness she sensed there and has no interest in any marriage agreement.
The biggest debate involves a plan for a military canal through the sea. Tharion argues against it because it will destroy the underwater environment, and Hypaxia backs him with evidence of how previous wars permanently ruined various habitats. Sandriel drops the issue, which shocks everyone. Even Jesiba acknowledges the young queen with a smile of respect.
Hunt stays shackled against the wall throughout. He watches the discussions and braces for the end of the week. Sandriel will take him back to Pangera once the Summit is over.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 76
Bryce has spent three days in the gallery library searching for a legal loophole to save Hunt. Micah arrives from the Summit, bypasses the building’s magical protections, and sits down with her. Bryce realizes she’s in danger and sends a distress signal to Jesiba.
Jesiba has Declan broadcast the gallery’s security feed onto the main conference screens. The gathered leaders watch as Micah reveals that the room holds the lost Library of Parthos, a massive collection of human knowledge from before the Asteri arrived. A group of priestesses saved these records during the First Wars. The books are illegal, and owning them carries a death sentence.
Micah taunts Bryce about Danika’s addiction. Sandriel blocks local security forces from stepping in and threatens Jesiba with punishment from the Asteri. Micah orders Bryce to sit down and reveals that he wants Luna’s Horn.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 77
Micah confesses that he was behind the deaths of Danika and the Pack of Devils. He coerced Danika into stealing the Horn by threatening to expose her previous theft of the synth drug, then injected Danika with the substance and watched her slaughter her friends before taking her own life. For the next two years, Micah used Bryce as an unwitting pawn, banking on Bryce’s loyalty to Danika to lead him to the Horn. Micah also admits to orchestrating the recent murders and the club bombing while letting Philip Briggs take the fall.
The Horn was never stashed in a drawer or a safe. Danika ground it into powder and tattooed it onto Bryce’s back while Bryce was intoxicated. The markings are written in an ancient language from another universe. The synth drug will fuse the broken pieces of the Horn beneath Bryce’s skin so Micah can activate it, though the process will most likely kill Bryce.
Micah injects Bryce with the drug. Bryce grabs a magical book for protection, but Micah tosses Syrinx into the predator’s tank to exploit Bryce’s kindness. Bryce drops the book to save the chimera. A hidden camera feeds everything live to the conference room, where Hunt can do nothing but watch in agony from his chains.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 78
Micah forces Bryce to the ground and channels his power into the markings on her back. The tattoo activates with a blast of energy but fails to open a portal. Confused, Micah decides he’ll keep trying to use the Horn regardless of whether Bryce survives.
Lehabah knocks Micah into the bathroom with a magical book, and Bryce locks the door with another. Bryce has only a few minutes before Micah breaks free. She grabs the knife Micah dropped, takes deep, fast breaths, and jumps into the water tank to save Syrinx while Lehabah lowers the platform to help Bryce reach the bottom.
At the Summit, Hunt demands that Sandriel go to the gallery and help. Sandriel refuses, claiming she has no legal authority in Micah’s territory. Hunt insults Sandriel, and Sandriel chokes Hunt into silence. Flynn watches the screen and notes that Bryce is entering a monster’s lair without any special abilities just to save the chimera, then calls this Bryce’s true Ordeal.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 79
Bryce dives in, rescues Syrinx, and escapes the predator by attacking a vulnerable spot. Bryce performs CPR on Syrinx until he wakes up.
But Micah is almost through the door, and Bryce knows she can’t move fast enough with the chimera. Lehabah stays behind.
Bryce reveals she bought Lehabah’s freedom a week ago, with the papers kept in her desk. Lehabah admits she already saw them. She tells Bryce to go, insisting her first act as a free person will be to protect her friends. Lehabah shatters the massive water tank with her remaining power, and the flood destroys both the predator and the sprite.
Every leader in the conference room stands and places a hand over their heart. They watch Lehabah’s final words. Lehabah says her friends are with her and she has no fear.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 80
Lehabah’s sacrifice buys Bryce a few seconds. Instead of fleeing, Bryce sprints to the upper office, pulls the Godslayer Rifle components from the wall, downs a potion, and grabs a golden bullet with a grim inscription about mortality. Bryce assembles the rifle on the move and skids to a stop at the broken window. Micah bursts through the door below and looks toward the exit. Bryce takes aim and fires a fatal shot through Micah’s head.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 81
Micah dies, and time stands still. Bryce leaps from the window with Danika’s sword and cuts Micah’s body apart on the way down, landing unharmed. Hunt realizes Bryce never succumbed to the drug because she drank an antidote. Hypaxia explains she sent the cure instead of the venom as a precaution.
Bryce douses Micah’s remains in gasoline and sets them on fire. Bryce looks into the camera to make clear she answers to no one, then shuts the door when the police arrive and finishes the job with a vacuum.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 82
Bryce tells the authorities it was a gas explosion and sends them away, then messages Jesiba, who confirms the entire Summit watched live. Bryce searches the flooded library for Lehabah but finds nothing. The Horn is healed and active, though Bryce is relieved no portal has opened.
At the Summit, Hunt and Ruhn are terrified that Bryce will be executed. Sandriel steps out for a phone call, and everyone wonders if she’s about to take over Micah’s position. Hypaxia quietly unlocks Hunt’s shackles and points toward the city camera feeds. The room goes silent when they realize Micah succeeded with his experiment.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 83
Bryce realizes Micah succeeded in opening a doorway straight to Hel. Bryce leaves Syrinx at her apartment, grabs her weapons and Danika’s leather jacket, and heads to the roof.
All seven Gates are open, and demons are pouring into the city.
Bryce calls to check on Juniper, then heads into the streets to fight. At the Summit, Sabine and the Autumn King push to prioritize wealthy districts, leaving the rest defenseless. Hunt and Ruhn try to intervene but get nowhere.
The 33rd unit is being wiped out downtown while Tharion is on his phone, moving civilians into the water. Hypaxia leads her own forces into the city. Declan finds Bryce on the cameras, and everyone in the room watches Bryce battle through the chaos. Hunt is the first to realize Bryce is making a stand at the Meadows.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 84
Micah thoroughly sabotaged the armory before leaving the Summit. Every weapon, car, and helicopter was ruined. Fury has one helicopter stashed elsewhere, but it will take at least half an hour to reach the city.
Bryce calls in desperate for immediate backup at the Meadows shelter. Children are trapped near the Mortal Gate. Sabine tells Bryce no wolves are free, but Ithan cuts in and promises he’s already on his way. When Sabine tries to order Ithan to stand down, Ithan and every wolf under his command hang up on Sabine simultaneously. All the canine packs abandon their posts and run full speed toward the Meadows. The wolves can be there in three minutes.
