House of Earth and Blood Chapter 16
Bryce stops by Ruhn’s house to ask if the Aux has intel on the Viper Queen the night Tertian died. Ruhn admits that the Viper Queen cleared her followers off the streets that night. He’s clearly rattled but refuses to say more and tries to push Bryce off the case. Bryce ignores him and says she’s going straight to the Viper Queen for answers.
Outside, Ruhn finds Hunt waiting on the sidewalk. After a brief, tense standoff, Hunt moves to follow Bryce. Ruhn warns Hunt to keep Bryce away from the Viper Queen, and Hunt’s reaction shows he had no idea Bryce was planning something that dangerous.
Once he’s alone, Ruhn starts connecting the dots. The murders picked up again right when his father ordered him to find Luna’s Horn, an artifact that vanished just a week before Danika died two years ago. Ruhn suspects the two events are linked and decides to start his own search.

On the walk home, Bryce hands her suspect list to Hunt. The nail salon wasn’t just a detour. The victim’s girlfriend works there, and Bryce learned that Tertian and Danika never actually knew each other. They were only connected through the Viper Queen. Tertian was also killed on the edge of the Viper Queen’s territory the same night she ordered her people to clear out.
Hunt admits it’s a solid lead but says they need to follow official procedures. Bryce isn’t interested in waiting and suggests tailing the Autumn King instead, since he warned her to lie low the night Tertian was murdered. Hunt feels uneasy about surveilling a Fae King but doesn’t shut the idea down.
Back at her apartment, Bryce plays it cool. She waits for Hunt to settle into his spot on the roof across the street, then slips out the back and takes her scooter to the Meat Market alone. Bryce thinks she has lost him, but Hunt slams down onto the pavement right in front of her, furious that she tried to ditch him.

Hunt catches up with Bryce and demands answers. Bryce explains she isn’t looking for the Viper Queen. She’s there to buy obsidian salt, the most potent summoning material on the market and likely what someone used to call up the demon that killed Danika and Tertian.
Bryce leads Hunt to a private room above the market floor to meet a satyr dealer. She haggles the price down to ten thousand gold marks for exactly seven pounds and seven ounces, using bluffs and threats involving Jesiba and a fake countdown on her phone. Hunt plays along when Bryce signals him.
The two get what they came for, but Hunt grows uneasy. Bryce knows exactly how to navigate the black market, which makes him wonder if she’s a suspect after all. They move to leave, but the Viper Queen is already waiting in the hallway.

The Viper Queen leads Bryce and Hunt to her office. Hunt realizes Bryce never needed the salt for a ritual. She bought it to get the queen’s attention and skip weeks of red tape.
Inside, the Viper Queen admits she had a professional connection with Danika but denies any part in the murders. She argues that killing Tertian would be bad for business given his father’s influence. The queen hands Bryce a flash drive with her alibis for both nights and explains she cleared her people off the streets because she sensed something dangerous, not because of inside information.
As Bryce and Hunt leave, the Viper Queen gives Bryce a cryptic tip to look toward the things that cause the most pain.
Outside, Bryce and Hunt agree the Viper Queen was probably telling the truth. Bryce says the tip gave her a new lead but refuses to share it yet. Hunt asks one last time about the obsidian salt. Bryce gives him a sarcastic answer and disappears on her scooter.

Bryce can’t bring herself to retrace Danika’s final days alone, so she calls Hunt for help. Hunt meets Lehabah and gets along well with the sprite. He notices Bryce is struggling and suggests starting with a happy memory to make it easier.
The suggestion works. Bryce recalls the night she and Danika got tattoos, a trip to the hair salon, and a sunball practice. Eventually, the memories become too much, and Bryce calls it a day.
A message from Ruhn comes in. He wants to meet at Luna’s Temple, a spot with no security cameras. Bryce and Hunt head over, and Hunt is looking forward to catching Ruhn off guard with his presence.

Ruhn meets Bryce and Hunt at Luna’s Temple to share what he found in the Fae Archives. He explains that the demon behind Danika’s death is a kristallos, a creature bred by a ruler of Hel to hunt down Luna’s Horn. Bryce confirms the description matches what she saw the night of the murders.
Then Ruhn walks Bryce and Hunt through the Horn’s history. He explains that a Starborn Prince named Pelias wielded it during the First Wars to push demon armies out and seal the Northern Rift. The effort cracked the artifact and drained its magic, and it eventually became a temple relic. Ruhn suspects his Starborn blood drew him to the book.
Someone is using a kristallos to hunt for the Horn, and since the demon is active in Lunathion, the relic has to be somewhere inside the city. If Bryce, Hunt, and Ruhn find the Horn first, the demon will come to them and lead them to the killer.
Hunt steps outside to call Justinian and asks him to dig through the legion’s records for anything on the kristallos. He hangs up, frustrated. Working with Ruhn Danaan wasn’t part of the plan.

Once Hunt steps outside, Bryce corners Ruhn and asks if their father is behind the murders. Ruhn denies it, insisting the Autumn King wouldn’t have sent him to find the Horn if he already had a demon doing it. Bryce accepts the logic but makes one thing clear. This partnership is strictly professional, and solving the case doesn’t fix what’s broken between them. Bryce brings up an old insult from a past fight and walks off before Ruhn can respond.
Bryce digs through the gallery’s records for anything on the Horn but comes up empty. Ruhn returns to the Fae Archives to see if his Starborn intuition can turn up more leads. Hunt stays outside the gallery to keep watch and calls Micah and Isaiah to update them.
Eventually, Bryce decides to stop avoiding the pain. She finishes the list of everything Danika did in her final week. The effort drains Bryce completely, and she heads home with nothing left.

Bryce sends a file to Jesiba and asks if she knows anything about the Horn. Jesiba says no.
Soon after, Hunt calls to report another murder near the Old Square Gate. The victim is a young acolyte from Luna’s Temple, killed the same brutal way as the others. The news pulls Bryce straight back to the night Danika died. Ruhn tries to pull Bryce away from the scene, but she refuses. Hunt backs Bryce up and tells Ruhn to get back to his research.
On their way out, Hunt asks how Bryce survived the kristallos two years ago. Bryce explains she didn’t fight the creature off. The kristallos simply chose to leave. Hunt then tells Bryce the injured angel she saved that night was Micah. Bryce can barely process the revelation.

Bryce is still reeling from the news about Micah. She’s angry that everyone kept it from her, and no one even told her whether he survived. When Hunt tries to apologize, he accidentally lets slip that Bryce was once on his suspect list. That’s the last straw. Bryce tells Hunt to get lost.
Fueled by anger and grief, Bryce runs through the streets to burn it off. A phone call brings her to the White Raven, where she stops in the alcove where she sent her last messages to Danika and scrolls through their old photos.
One picture pulls up a memory from senior year, when Bryce and Danika were held at gunpoint on a highway after a mess involving a stolen bike. In that moment, Danika told Bryce she loved her for the first time.
Bryce takes one last look at the final photo Danika ever sent her and heads inside.

Hunt follows Bryce to the White Raven and sits down without being asked. He orders food and tries Bryce’s drink, surprised to find it’s just water. Bryce admits she doesn’t drink anymore, a sign she changed after losing Danika.
Bryce steps away, and Juniper pulls her onto the dance floor. Ruhn shows up at the booth after the club owner called him. He’s worried because Bryce seemed off after the crime scene and wants to check if she’s okay. Ruhn then tells Hunt that Bryce used to be a serious dancer and quit after the tragedy.
Hunt realizes he had Bryce all wrong. Bryce isn’t a shallow socialite. She’s been quietly carrying her trauma for two years while letting the world think the worst of her. When Bryce spots Ruhn, she heads back, angry. Before Bryce reaches them, the club explodes.

A bomb explodes inside the White Raven. Bryce tackles Juniper to shield her from the blast. Hunt pulls Bryce out and takes her to Ruhn’s house so she can recover. Juniper, still shaken, yells at Bryce for taking such a reckless risk.
Investigators determine that human rebels who follow Philip Briggs caused the explosion. They find a symbol at the scene that resembles a curved horn, which suggests the bombing was meant as a warning. Hunt calls Isaiah to arrange a prison meeting with Briggs.
Ruhn tells Bryce that their father found out she’s involved and wants her under constant guard. Bryce avoids having Ruhn move in by choosing Hunt instead. She then makes a deal with her brother. Bryce will give him access to Jesiba’s library if he gets Declan Emmet to help track Danika’s final movements. They agree to begin at the gallery the next morning.
Afterward, the Autumn King instructs Ruhn to keep the Horn away from the angels and to watch Bryce closely.

On the walk home, Bryce tells Hunt that she and Danika had always planned to undergo the Drop together, with Connor and Thorne serving as their Anchors. Now that Danika is gone, Bryce admits she’s just been going through the motions.
Back at the apartment, Bryce calls her mother and lies about being at the club. She asks Hunt to stay quiet about his deal with Micah. Hunt agrees and opens up about his own situation. If he catches the killer before the Summit, his debt will drop to just ten more lives, putting his freedom within reach. Bryce listens without judgment.
Hunt apologizes for treating Bryce like a suspect. Bryce accepts his apology and tells him he’s not the jerk he pretends to be. They eat burgers together and call it a night.
After Bryce goes to bed, Hunt finds two photos in the guest room. One shows Bryce as a toddler with her parents. Her adoptive father, Randall Silago, is a famous war hero. The other shows Bryce and Danika on rocks in the desert after what looks like a brutal fight, with Danika holding a sword nearby and Bryce covered in bandages. It’s the only photo of Danika in the apartment, and Bryce is wearing that same jacket right now.

Hunt wakes up to find Syrinx staring at him. Juniper stops by with pastries to check on Bryce. Juniper explains that the media is blaming the bombing on human insurrectionists from the western continent, with security cameras capturing their symbols on a shipment crate. The club owner has put a price on the bomber, which means their old friend Fury might return to collect.
After Juniper leaves, Hunt tells Bryce that he needs his own keys and full access to her security spells. Bryce feels annoyed but doesn’t argue. From that point on, they go everywhere together.

Ruhn joins Bryce and Hunt at the gallery, and they get to work. Hunt searches databases for ancient images of the demon while Ruhn combs through the bookshelves. Declan sends over Danika’s location records from the weeks before she died. Danika was assigned to Luna’s Temple for the two days before the Horn went missing and remained there during the citywide blackout. Bryce thinks the demon tracked Danika because Danika picked up the scent of the Horn while on duty.
Later, Ruhn finds a book with more of the Horn’s history. Only someone with Starborn power can use it, which explains why the creature was bred to hunt that specific magical essence. The Horn can be repaired only by a very specific and contradictory type of light and magic, so the group concludes that it’s likely useless. They’re also dealing with two separate people: the one who controls the demon and the one who has the Horn.
Hunt then agrees to visit the Oracle since Bryce and Ruhn both refuse to return. He later heads to the military complex with Bryce.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 30
Bryce and Hunt head to the Comitium so Hunt can grab weapons and fresh clothes. They talk while he packs, and Bryce starts to piece things together. Hunt isn’t stuck at a lower rank because he lacks ability. He simply has no interest in babysitting soldiers or playing the political game. Hunt shares a bit of his past, though he stays guarded, given where they are.
Isaiah then calls with an update. Their request to see Briggs is approved, but it will take a few days. The Oracle also has an opening for Hunt the next morning.
As Bryce and Hunt head out, they notice that every soldier is staring toward the front doors. A wave of power rolls through, and everyone drops to the floor in a bow. Micah stands at the entrance, and right beside him is Sandriel, who has just arrived.

Sandriel’s arrival catches everyone off guard, including Hunt. The moment he sees her, he locks up and starts shaking. Bryce plays the starstruck tourist and gets him into the elevator before things get worse. Pollux’s absence helps Hunt settle slightly.
Micah stops Bryce and asks her to dinner in front of everyone. She turns him down without hesitation. Hunt carries Bryce out through a launch balcony, and they head home.
During the flight, Hunt thanks Bryce for stepping in and warns her that Pollux is far more dangerous than Sandriel. Back at the apartment, he asks if she was serious about rejecting the Governor. Bryce meant every word. When Hunt asks if she’s avoiding relationships, she rebuffs him. Bryce is tired of the assumption that a single woman must be waiting for a powerful man to complete her life. Bryce spends the afternoon going through Danika’s old location data but comes up empty. On the walk home, she teases Hunt for being a typical sports fan.
Micah calls, and Hunt steps away to take it. He gets an order for an assassination, and Micah snaps at him about the lobby scene with Sandriel. Hunt tells Bryce he has routine legion work and slips away, asking Justinian to watch the apartment.
The job is brutal and leaves Hunt feeling hollow. He gets back late and drained. Bryce is still awake, but she doesn’t push him. She just mentions that she saved the sunball game for him. Hunt manages a thanks and heads to his room.
