House of Earth and Blood Chapter 50

Five days have passed since Sabine’s revelation, and the investigation has stalled. Ruhn stops by, and Bryce and Hunt tell him that Danika stole the artifact. Bryce believes that Danika took it to keep it away from the people hunting it, meaning the killer never got the artifact and is still searching for it. Ruhn also shares a tip from a healer about a new artificial healing drug that matches the strange descriptions in the old legends and might be the key to fixing the relic.

Tharion sends forensic evidence from the river that complicates the investigation. The mer found bodies over the past two years with wounds matching the demon’s venom, but those victims had their chests torn open, while Bryce’s friends were crushed into pulp. Bryce suspects the kristallos was only a tracker and that something far worse was responsible for the massacre.

Bryce decides they need an expert to identify what kind of creature could cause that level of damage and tells Hunt that she knows someone who can help. She warns him to keep his temper in check when he learns who that person is.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 51

Bryce uses the obsidian salt to summon Aidas into her apartment. This isn’t their first meeting. When Bryce was thirteen and struggling after a terrible day, Aidas appeared to Bryce as a white cat. Aidas recognizes Hunt right away and calls Hunt’s forehead tattoo a dark crown.

Aidas makes it clear that the rulers of the Chasm aren’t behind the demon attacks. When Bryce asks about Danika’s murder, Aidas tells her to re-examine the old evidence and look for details the original reports missed. Before Aidas disappears, he encourages Bryce to “make the Drop” and find him once she has.

Bryce calls Declan to ask about better ways to analyze the original crime scene. Declan brings up an advanced Fae sensor called the Mimir, which offers far more detail than the tools investigators used two years ago. Ruhn admits that investigators never used the Mimir because his father ordered Fae technology kept out of the case. Overcome with rage, Bryce storms out of the building.

Bryce races to the Autumn King’s house to confront him about hiding the truth. The guards refuse to let her in and mock her for being half-human. Hunt arrives ready to fight, but Ruhn and his friends step in to defuse the situation. Furious, Bryce leaves an angry message for the Autumn King and storms off on her own.

Instead of going home, Bryce stops at a bar for whiskey. Hunt tracks her down and brings medicine for her leg without lecturing her. He tells Bryce he’ll be at the apartment when she’s ready and leaves her with instructions for her next dose.

Bryce returns home with groceries and some of Danika’s old belongings. To make amends, Bryce makes dinner for Hunt, and they talk about their lives. During the meal, Bryce explains why she gave up dancing and how deeply she misses Danika. Hunt explains why he chose to rebel despite losing his freedom and argues that surviving and finding happiness are the best ways to spite their enemies. Before the night ends, Bryce offers Hunt a permanent place to stay if they solve the case.

Later that night, Bryce dreams of Aidas in his cat form. Aidas admits that he has long known Bryce’s true identity as the Autumn King’s daughter and urges her to “make the Drop” and find him so that Bryce and Aidas can finish their business together.

The next morning, a heavy downpour falls outside. Hunt makes Bryce breakfast and insists she eat because she’s been skipping meals. Bryce and Hunt trade lighthearted barbs over coffee, and the mood from the previous night lifts.

Hunt brings Danika’s clothes to Viktoria at the lab, along with a list of dangerous demons possibly tied to the kristallos sightings. Viktoria tells Hunt the advanced Fae sensors will take a while to finish the scan.

That night, Bryce and Hunt watch a trashy reality show about Vanir at a beach club. The atmosphere between them is more relaxed than it’s been in days. The next morning, the mood changes when Micah calls Hunt to his office alone.

Micah calls Hunt into his office and reveals that he knows about the secret forensic testing. With the Summit only two weeks away, Micah explains that Sandriel has been trying to pull Hunt back under her control. Micah claims he has refused her demands, but to remind Hunt who owns him, Micah hands over a new assassination order.

Hunt returns home hours later, covered in blood, and refuses to look at or speak to Bryce. Bryce had been panicking and even called Ruhn out of worry. When Hunt shuts himself in his room, Bryce goes in and finds him on the shower floor beneath scalding water, completely withdrawn.

Bryce turns down the heat, washes the blood away, and helps Hunt into dry clothes. She stays with him in bed until he feels safe. Around three in the morning, Hunt wakes to find Bryce asleep beside him and carries her back to her own room. On his way out, he notices messages on her phone from Ruhn. Bryce’s cousin sounds genuinely happy that she reached out and promises to be there whenever she needs him.

The morning after Hunt’s breakdown, he and Bryce share a tense moment in the kitchen that nearly ends in a kiss. The spell breaks when the smell of burning breakfast fills the room.

Viktoria meets Hunt at a bar with new test results. She found traces of a manufactured substance called synth on the victims’ clothing. It’s a strange blend of technology, biology, and magic that matches the old Fae riddle about a form of magic that’s not actually magic.

Bryce calls Ruhn to discuss the findings. Ruhn reveals that synth uses obsidian salt as an ingredient, meaning someone could use it to summon a demon without the natural strength to do so. Bryce wants to go to the Meat Market to find the dealer, but Hunt convinces her to wait and spend the night talking to her parents instead.

Hunt tells Bryce that his mother was murdered for her meager savings, and her death drove him to join the rebellion. Bryce and Hunt spend the rest of the night cleaning the apartment before Bryce’s video call with her parents.

Bryce introduces Hunt to her parents over a video call. Bryce’s father, Randall, is an old soldier who recognizes Hunt from a past war in Pangera, and the two share a brief, respectful nod about how brutal the battle was. Bryce’s mother, Ember, spends most of the call sizing Hunt up, trying to figure out what’s going on between Hunt and Bryce.

The mood changes when Hunt brings up Bryce’s chronic leg injury. Hunt warns that if the old demon poison is still in Bryce’s system during the Drop, Bryce could be stuck with that pain permanently. Bryce snaps at Hunt for overstepping, ends the call, and storms off to her room.

Ember calls Bryce back privately. She warns Bryce to be careful around powerful immortal men, speaking from her own experience with Bryce’s biological father. Ember then tells Bryce that refusing to heal her leg is Bryce’s way of punishing herself for surviving when Danika didn’t, and that giving up dancing came from the same place. Bryce has no answer. Ember ends the call after saying she’s booking a medical appointment regardless of Bryce’s protests.

Hunt goes to Bryce’s room after the call. Bryce explains why she refuses to heal her leg. The scar and the pain are the only physical reminders Bryce has left from the night her friends died, and healing her leg feels like letting Danika and the pack go for good. Hunt gently tells Bryce that her memories won’t fade just because she stops hurting, that he and Ember just want her to be healthy, and that he wants to be her friend. Bryce accepts with a bit of humor.

Bryce then tells Hunt how her parents met. Bryce’s mother fled the city while pregnant to escape Bryce’s biological father and was nearly caught by his enforcers before Randall saved her. Randall was a famous sharpshooter working as a temple guard. After the rescue, the House of Earth and Blood gave Bryce’s family a formal order of protection.

Afterward, Bryce and Hunt spend the rest of the night watching television in Bryce’s bed. The romantic tension is there, and both Bryce and Hunt feel it, but they keep things simple.

Bryce and Hunt spend the morning at the Meat Market looking for leads on synth. Hunt buys Bryce a small white opal that represents joy, a gesture that signals Hunt is starting to care for Bryce beyond their professional arrangement.

Then, a teenage shifter tells Bryce and Hunt that the whole market has been tracking their movements through a group message, that the Viper Queen refuses to touch synth, and that Bryce and Hunt should look toward the water instead.

Bryce and Hunt meet Tharion at the docks. What Tharion tells them stops Bryce cold. Reports from the day before the murder placed Danika herself on a boat near the docks making a drug deal.

Tharion explains that synth heals at low doses but gives humans a temporary boost of supernatural strength at high doses. Right before Danika’s murder, witnesses saw Danika on a boat late at night with a crate full of synth.

Later, Bryce reaches Fury, who admits she knew about the synth. Fury explains that Danika kept Bryce in the dark because synth offers exactly what Bryce lacks: magical power. Danika feared Bryce would be tempted to use synth to feel like she belonged among the immortals. Fury also reveals that she’s returning to town for the upcoming diplomatic gathering.

After some research, Bryce finds that Redner Industries patented the formula a decade ago. She suspects someone smuggled the drug out to use its properties to fix a broken relic and that Danika discovered the plan and took the artifact to stop that person, which got her killed.

Over the phone, Ruhn tells Bryce that the medwitch healer is using demon venom to create an antidote for synth. He also reveals that years earlier, Danika nearly attacked him in a lobby after Ruhn tried to send Bryce an apology through her.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 60

Today would’ve been Danika’s twenty-fifth birthday. Bryce feels like the only person who still remembers. She picks up a box of chocolate croissants because they were Danika’s favorite and sits alone by the river to honor her. Hunt finds Bryce there, and they talk openly about their grief. Hunt shares what it felt like to lose Shahar, and Bryce and Hunt realize they understand each other’s pain in a way nobody else does.

The moment turns dark when Bryce opens the box. Someone has written a cruel insult in chocolate on top of the croissant. Bryce is devastated. Hunt flies to a bar in Moonwood, finds Amelie, pins her against a wall, and uses his lightning to make it clear that she’s never to touch Bryce again. Ithan witnesses the confrontation and understands how cruel Amelie’s actions were, especially on Danika’s birthday.

Hunt returns to the roof where Bryce is waiting. Bryce is scared he’ll get in trouble, but Hunt takes her hands and tells her they’re reflections of one another. Bryce feels a shift within herself at Hunt’s words. The next morning, Bryce schedules an appointment to treat her leg and tells Hunt that she has a plan to get the demon venom needed for the antidote research.

Bryce visits a medwitch’s clinic with Hunt to treat her old injury. The healer warns that the demon venom has spent two years bonding with Bryce’s leg and that removing it will be incredibly painful. Bryce goes through with the treatment anyway.

Hunt holds Bryce’s hand throughout. To distract her, Hunt admits he was in the interrogation room two years ago and has remembered Bryce ever since. At the worst of the pain, Hunt kisses Bryce softly.

The witch seals the extracted venom in a glass vial and tests it on a synth tablet. The pill dissolves in three minutes. The treatment works. The witch says she’ll keep refining the formula so others can eventually use it without her direct involvement.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 62

Micah summons Bryce and Hunt to his office, where Sabine and Amelie are waiting. As punishment for the attack on Amelie, Micah sentences Hunt to the Living Death and orders the removal of Hunt’s wings. Amelie tries to stop the punishment, but Sabine insists on it to get revenge for the investigation into her daughter’s death. Hunt accepts the sentence without resistance.

Before leaving, Sabine taunts Bryce with information from the Under-King. Sabine knows that after Danika died, Bryce went to the Bone Quarter and surrendered her eternal rest so Danika could enter the afterlife. Sabine claims that Bryce’s sacrifice only brings Danika shame, but Bryce refuses to accept Sabine’s claim.

That night, Bryce took a Death Mark from the gallery, crossed the river alone, and repeated her offer seven times until the Under-King accepted it. Bryce gave up her right to any afterlife so Danika could find peace.

Later, Isaiah and Naomi help Bryce and Hunt get home. Bryce stays up to clean Hunt’s wounds and warns Ithan through a text message that she’ll kill Sabine if Bryce and Sabine ever meet again. Hunt wakes in the early hours to find Bryce asleep at his side. He knows he should distance himself from Bryce, but he pulls her closer instead.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 63

Bryce spends the day at the gallery while Ruhn watches over Hunt. She submits several job applications after deciding to leave Jesiba, regardless of how the investigation ends.

Then Bryce pulls up Danika’s Redner Industries account and tries every password she can think of. She finally enters the phrase from her tattoo and Danika’s jacket about love making all things possible. The password works.

Among the files, Bryce finds a folder oddly labeled for party invitations. Inside it is a subfolder bearing Bryce’s name and a single photo of Danika’s leather jacket. Bryce grabs the jacket and cuts into the seam where “love” is stitched. A tiny flash drive falls out.

The drive holds three files. Bryce and Lehabah watch the first file together, and the contents leave both of them stunned.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 64

Bryce shows Hunt the flash drive, and together they watch a synth trial recording. A human test subject displays terrifying strength after an injection, kills multiple Vanir prisoners with her bare hands, and takes her own life. Bryce concludes that there was never a second demon. Someone empowered by synth bypassed the apartment security and killed Bryce’s friends. Hunt agrees but warns that they need to stay under the radar because Micah won’t show mercy if Bryce and Hunt cause more trouble.

Then Hunt and Bryce share a passionate kiss, but they stop when Bryce notices that Hunt is bleeding from his back. Bryce calls a medwitch, who patches the wound and orders Hunt to avoid physical strain until his wings grow back. Hunt falls asleep, and Bryce rests for a few hours.

Later that night, Bryce wakes and goes to her old apartment to look for anything Danika left behind, but she finds the place on fire. All the residents escape safely, but Bryce knows the blaze is a deliberate warning. Someone tracked Bryce when she accessed the corporate account. The attack convinces Bryce that she’s close to the truth.

As Bryce heads home, Tharion messages her about a suspicious boat and a synth deal that’s about to go down. Bryce rushes to meet Tharion without telling Hunt or Ruhn.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 65

Tharion takes Bryce out on the river to watch a transaction on a barge. They spot the Viper Queen delivering a massive synth shipment to hooded buyers. Bryce reaches for Hunt’s contact information to call for help. When one of the buyers turns around, the light catches his face. The buyer is Hunt.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 66

Bryce boards the barge and finds Hunt with Viktoria and Justinian. Micah arrives with armed guards and explains that Hunt and the other angels spent days buying a large synth shipment to distribute to enslaved angels so they could break their bindings and rebel. The Viper Queen set Hunt and the other angels up after Justinian tried to recruit one of her people.

Micah then reveals a truth Hunt had known for days. Danika murdered her own pack. She was addicted to synth, took a massive dose the night she died, lost control, killed her friends, and took her own life. The demon Bryce had been tracking was a byproduct of the black salt in the synth formula. Danika stole the Horn to provoke her mother and likely planned to sell the Horn.

The worst part for Bryce is that Hunt knew all of this for nearly a week and let her keep chasing a killer who didn’t exist. Fury arrives and holds a gun to Hunt’s head. Isaiah cuffs Hunt, Viktoria, and Justinian. Bryce throws her opal at Hunt, tells him she’s done with him forever, and leaves with Fury without looking back.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 67

Ruhn finds Bryce in the lobby and sits with her while she processes the betrayal. Bryce suspects Hunt used the promise of a shared life to stop her from digging further after she showed him the footage, and that he set fire to her old apartment to destroy evidence before he finished the deal with the Viper Queen.

When Fury returns, she talks with Ruhn in the kitchen while Bryce listens. Justinian is dying publicly as a warning. Micah separated Viktoria’s spirit from her body and sealed Viktoria’s spirit in a container that he plans to drop into a deep underwater chasm forever. Hunt is in a cell, and Micah has something worse planned for Hunt. Bryce sits on the couch in shock, staring at nothing.

House of Earth and Blood Part 4: The Ravine

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 68

Hunt explains the plan to Isaiah from his cell. Hunt and the other angels had intended to use the drug at the upcoming Summit to break their magical bonds and restart the rebellion. After watching the trial videos, Hunt tried to back out, but the other angels refused to stop.

Isaiah tells Hunt that the Governor already knows about Hunt’s hesitation, and that’s the only reason Hunt is in a cell instead of facing a public execution like Justinian. Micah trapped Viktoria’s spirit in a small container at the bottom of the sea.

Hunt asks Isaiah to pass his apologies to Bryce. Isaiah says his final goodbye and warns Hunt that the punishment awaiting him will be severe.

Three days pass with no news about Hunt’s fate. The healer delivers a working antidote, and Bryce locks the antidote in the office safe.

The Autumn King makes an unexpected visit to the gallery. The Governor has guaranteed Bryce’s safety, so no one is permitted to target Bryce to get back at Hunt. The Autumn King reminds Bryce that the stolen artifact still holds historical value even though no one is hunting for it. He hints that Bryce has more of his personality than she’d care to admit, then walks out.
