House of Earth and Blood Chapters 85–Epilogue Summary

This chapter-by-chapter summary of House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas contains spoilers.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 85

Bryce holds the intersection just long enough for reinforcements to arrive. The Viper Queen’s elite guards and Ithan’s wolf packs begin clearing a path for the civilians. When the shelter door starts sliding shut, Bryce pushes Ithan through the gap, and the door slams shut, leaving her alone on the street.

Back at the Summit, Sandriel orders everyone to stop their rescue efforts, claiming the Asteri are handling it. Frustrated, Hunt and Ruhn have no choice but to comply.

Alone and exhausted, Bryce fights her way toward the Old Square, twenty blocks away through demon-infested streets, running on nearly nothing.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 86

Night falls by the time Bryce reaches the Old Square. Worn out and out of options, Bryce stops just short of the Heart Gate and calls Hunt to say her goodbyes. Bryce expects voicemail, but Ruhn pressures Sandriel into handing over the phone, and Hunt picks up.

Hunt tries to talk Bryce into finding safety, but Bryce leaves final messages for everyone she loves. Bryce tells Hunt she was waiting for him. Hunt says he was waiting for Bryce too. Bryce hangs up, sets down her phone and Danika’s sword, and sprints toward the Gate.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 87

Bryce stands before the Heart Gate and reveals the secret light she has carried since birth as the true Starborn heir. She once used it to save Danika from smugglers but hid it from Ruhn for years. The title mattered deeply to Ruhn, and Bryce had no interest in the status or the crown.

The Horn on Bryce’s back is fully repaired and humming with starlight. The Gate’s quartz structure acts as a prism for magical energy, so Bryce can amplify her light through it and activate the Horn to shut all seven portals at once. Bryce has never pushed the star to its burning core before, and the effort makes her legs shake. She thinks of Hunt, whispers a command to close the Gates, and forces her starlight into the stone.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 88

Bryce seals the Heart Gate, but six other portals remain open. The display forces Ruhn to accept that his sister is the true Starborn heir and has been hiding it for years. The Autumn King calls Ember for answers. Ember confirms Bryce has known since childhood and kept it secret to protect Ruhn’s position and pride. Bryce didn’t want to take away the one thing their father valued in Ruhn. Rather than feeling envious, Ruhn is devastated.

Sandriel is caught making a secret call and admits she already reported everything to the Asteri, including Bryce’s heritage and the Horn merged with Bryce’s body.

Hunt finally understands why Danika tattooed the Horn on Bryce. It can only be used by a true Starborn heir. Micah thought the synth could bypass that, but it only worked because Bryce is the legitimate heir. The Asteri will likely move to kill Bryce before anyone grasps the scope of her power.

Sandriel notes that Bryce is drained and hasn’t yet made the Drop, so killing her would be easy. While Sandriel gloats, Hypaxia channels her magic into Hunt and dissolves the iron halo from his forehead. Free at last, Hunt stands up.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 89

Hunt kills Sandriel with a massive blast of lightning and every angel in the room drops to one knee. With the halo gone and two high-ranking officials dead in one day, the balance of power has shifted. Hunt takes command, orders the angels toward the city, and tells Fury to get her helicopter ready.

Ruhn reckons with the fact that Bryce hid her identity to protect him. Bryce spent years living with the same fear Ruhn had only just discovered, knowing their father would likely kill any Starborn heir in his way. Before the group leaves, Hunt gives the Autumn King a look that leaves him visibly shaken.

Together, Ruhn, Tharion, Flynn, and Amelie join the mission. Declan stays behind while Jesiba and Hypaxia keep the remaining leaders in check. Once airborne, Hunt asks Fury if she knew Bryce once reached a breaking point on her roof. Fury confirms it. Bryce was gone for a long time after Danika died, and Hunt is the one who finally brought Bryce back.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 90

Bryce is alive but completely drained. Three massive Asterian Guard tanks pull up outside the city, not to help but to use brimstone missiles to flatten it. Bryce is their primary target.

The first missiles hit Moonwood, destroying the Old Square. Bryce tries to run, but a concrete slab pins her down. The tanks reload and aim directly at her.

Hunt tells Fury to fly as high as possible, then unbuckles and leaps out. As another missile streaks toward the Old Square, Hunt drops through the air, spreads his wings, releases a burst of lightning, and shields Bryce with his body just as the explosion hits.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 91

Hunt saves Bryce by shielding her with his body, but he’s now near death. The missile enchantments prevent Hunt’s wounds from closing, and he’s bleeding out fast. Bryce drags herself to the Heart Gate and addresses the survivors. She explains that she can perform the Drop right there if someone at another Gate will act as her Anchor. The surge would heal the injured and let Bryce use the Horn to seal the portals for good. No one answers.

Bryce returns to Hunt, holds him as his breathing fails, whispers three words in his ear, and prepares for the end. Then Bryce hears Danika’s voice. It feels like more than a memory when Bryce’s friend tells her to light it up. Bryce looks back and sees that the stone representing the Bone Quarter has begun to glow.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 92

With Danika’s voice as her anchor, Bryce begins the Drop. At the Summit, the group watches in shock as Bryce surges past every power level expected for a half-human. Hypaxia explains that the Gate plaque is a blessing that has collected magic from everyone who ever touched it. Centuries of power and millions of wishes funnel into Bryce as she falls.

The Gates light up in a massive star shape. Firstlight floods the streets, drives the demons away, repairs buildings, heals the injured, and seals the portals. Bryce’s power level settles just above her father’s.

The Autumn King points out what everyone missed. Danika is dead and cannot serve as a real anchor, so Bryce has no tether back to the physical world. Bryce’s body collapses next to the Gate, and a six-minute timer appears on the screen. The king is certain Bryce won’t make it.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 93

Bryce finds herself between life and death. She tells Danika she’s too exhausted to return, but Danika refuses to let Bryce give up. Abandoning her life would go against everything Bryce stands for. Danika tells Bryce that Hunt is alive because Bryce’s own magic healed him. That changes everything.

With two minutes left, Bryce admits she’s terrified. Danika promises to stay by her side. After a final goodbye, Bryce runs.

At the Summit, the Autumn King insists that a successful Ascent is impossible. The countdown hits its last millisecond before the monitors show Bryce moving.

Bryce sprints toward life with Danika right behind her. Danika gives Bryce one last shove and vanishes forever. Hunt performs chest compressions and uses his lightning to shock Bryce’s heart back to life. Hunt demands that Bryce return so she can repeat the words she whispered to him. When the Autumn King asks how this is even happening, Sabine says anything is possible through love.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 94

Danika’s goodbye gives Bryce strength. Bryce follows Hunt’s voice through the space between life and death.

Hunt is fully healed and works to revive Bryce with chest compressions and lightning. He tells Bryce he’s waiting. As Bryce’s spirit nears her body, Hunt delivers one final shock.

Bryce wakes in Hunt’s arms, surrounded by Hunt’s wings and radiating soft light. She touches Hunt’s forehead to confirm the halo is gone. They share a brief, sarcastic exchange. Around them, people open their doors and step into the street, healthy and safe. Bryce realizes her magic is connected to everyone in the city. She takes Hunt’s hand, and together they walk forward to meet the crowd.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 95

Back at the apartment, Bryce and Hunt share a brief moment of peace. Bryce finds a new scar on her chest shaped like an eight-pointed star. Her mother calls, but they save the harder conversations for morning.

Hunt contacts Isaiah, learns the Comitium is in disarray, and agrees to come in. Then Hunt notices the slave tattoo on his wrist is gone.

Meanwhile, Bryce gets a call from an unknown number. She recognizes the young voice and addresses him by his royal title. It’s one of the Asteri.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 96

Rigelus calls Bryce to offer his supposed gratitude. He frees Hunt from slavery and clears the mark on Hunt’s wrist, but the gesture is a thinly veiled threat. Rigelus orders Bryce and Hunt to stay out of the spotlight and never use the Horn again. Rigelus also claims the missile strike happened because Sandriel lied about the city being empty.

After the call, Hunt sums it up plainly. He says they have to live quietly, or the Asteri will kill everyone Bryce and Hunt love.

At headquarters, Bryce and Hunt run into Ruhn. Ruhn tells Bryce how terrified he was of losing her and that he has no interest in the Starborn title. He only wants to be her brother. Together, they discover a telepathic bond between them that their father knows nothing about. Ruhn warns Bryce that the Autumn King will demand a meeting, then heads home.

Bryce looks up to see Hunt waiting on a nearby rooftop. Hunt is finally free from his past. Bryce and Hunt are ready to face the future together.

House of Earth and Blood Chapter 97

The next morning, Bryce slips out early with Syrinx. The Fae districts were barely touched by the attack. They raised their shields immediately and refused to lower them for anyone else.

Bryce sits by the river and reads her old messages from Danika and Connor. Bryce responds to Connor’s last text, where he asked her to let him know when she made it home. She writes that she’s home, then deletes the conversations. It feels like moving forward.

Before Bryce leaves, the fog over the Bone Quarter clears briefly. Six figures stand on a lush green shore. Danika isn’t there, having given up her soul to save Bryce, but Connor waves. Bryce blows Connor a kiss before the mist rolls back in. Her phone buzzes with a message from Hunt.

Hunt is back at the apartment making breakfast. Bryce smiles, picks up her pace, and heads home genuinely happy for the first time in years.

House of Earth and Blood Epilogue

Jesiba finds Aidas in his cat form at the Oracle’s Park. Aidas tells Jesiba that he knew Bryce possessed the starlight because it matched the power of an ancient queen named Theia, and Aidas kept Bryce’s identity secret.

When Jesiba brings up Hunt, Aidas says Hunt’s father would have been proud, hinting at a hidden family history and a past connection between them.

Jesiba tells Aidas she has already moved the library collection. As Aidas disappears back to Hel, Jesiba warns him not to betray them again. Aidas gives his word and notes that things are about to get very interesting.
