This Sarah J. Maas Empire of Storms chapter summary contains full spoilers.

Empire of Storms Chapter 63

Aelin and Manon have vanished into the mirror after the King of Adarlan sent them through it to buy the fleet time before the battle. Rowan brings the news, and Aedion explodes with rage, giving Dorian a black eye. The group tries everything to open the mirror, but nothing works.

Rowan takes charge and tells the group they must move forward without Aelin. He warns Lorcan, Fenrys, and Gavriel that Maeve will likely exploit the blood oath against them at the worst possible moment. That warning prompts a long-hidden revelation. Fenrys discloses that after he and the others defended Mistward, Maeve had them all whipped as punishment, and Cairn spent two days beating Lorcan while Maeve kept him bound. Even so, all three choose to stay and fight.

Before pledging his sword to Rowan, Lorcan sets one condition. Rowan must provide Elide with a guard and safe passage to shore, and Rowan agrees.

Rowan divides the forces across the fleet and positions Fenrys, Lorcan, and Gavriel toward the back, where Maeve is less likely to spot them. Lysandra slips into the water in her sea dragon form to attack enemy ships from below.

A messenger from Maeve demands Aelin’s surrender. Rowan tells the messenger that Aelin is gone and suggests both sides part ways. Maeve responds with a massive volley of magic-tipped arrows that hammers their shields, and the battle begins.

Empire of Storms Chapter 64

Aelin and Manon end up in a strange gray void after the witch mirror transports them. They have no sense of where they are or what’s happening on the battlefield, and the mirror gives no reaction despite the two Wyrdkeys Aelin has hidden on her. Aelin draws Goldryn, and the two women agree to stay close and speak as little as possible.

The mist suddenly darkens around Aelin and Manon, and a rippling light moves toward them. It expands into a full scene from the past, a thousand years back, that the two women can witness without being seen or detected. They watch Elena Galathynius kneeling, bloody and weeping, before an obsidian sarcophagus covered in glowing Wyrdmarks, with the Eye of Elena set into the stone itself. Elena reaches out and turns the Eye three times until it falls into her hand and the sarcophagus seals shut.

Manon realizes the Eye of Elena was the Lock the whole time, not the witch mirror. Aelin concludes that someone deliberately sent Aelin and Manon after the wrong thing. The two women fall silent as the memory continues to play out, waiting to learn why the mirror brought them there to witness it.

Empire of Storms Chapter 65

At the Obsidian Passes, Elena uses the Lock to imprison Erawan inside a sarcophagus carved from the mountain. A group of gods materializes and tells her she has made a serious error. The Lock was meant to seal the Wyrdkeys back into the gate and send the gods home alongside Erawan. Instead, Elena used its power in the wrong battle.

The gods consider releasing Erawan as punishment but hold back on one condition. Someone from Mala’s bloodline must one day create a replacement Lock, send the gods home with Erawan, and give up their life to seal the gate. Elena agrees.

When Gavin asks what Elena gave away, she tells him only that Erawan will rise again and that she’ll help whoever fights him. The claim is a lie, and Elena and Gavin never discuss it again.

At the Temple of Sandrian, Elena appears to Nehemia, Princess of Eyllwe. Nehemia has spent weeks there convinced she was meant to open a stone chest and pay a blood price. Elena tells her that Nehemia has misread the situation. The chest holds memories that Elena, her father, and Rhiannon Crochan compiled to prepare the person who truly carries that burden.

Elena explains that the task belongs to someone else. Aelin Galathynius is alive and heading north under a different name. Elena tells Nehemia to go to Adarlan and find Aelin. The price is that Nehemia will never see Eyllwe again. Nehemia accepts the cost and resolves to unite the rebel forces and prepare the continent for what is coming.

Empire of Storms Chapter 66

Aedion commands a fleet facing Maeve’s immortal Fae armada, rallying the soldiers as volleys of magic-tipped arrows rain down on their ships. Dorian’s magic holds a shield over the fleet, though it drains faster than expected. Beneath the waves, Lysandra has taken on a modified sea dragon form and moves through the enemy fleet, tearing off rudders and battering holes in hulls to cripple Maeve’s ships before the real fighting begins.

Back on the surface, Dorian struggles to keep his shields intact while also reeling from Aelin and Manon’s disappearance into a mirror. Rowan has fallen into a state of cold, consuming fury but holds the front line and refuses to retreat. Dorian waits for the order to unleash his full power, knowing the effort will cost him.

Even with Lysandra’s sabotage, enough of Maeve’s ships maneuver around the disabled vessels and push forward. Then, just as the enemy closes in, Dorian notices something. Across multiple vessels, Maeve’s black flag is coming down and being replaced by a silver banner bearing a screaming hawk, the sigil of the House of Whitethorn. Those ships immediately open fire on Maeve’s armada.

Empire of Storms Chapter 67

Rowan had spent the lead-up to the battle going from ship to ship through the Fae fleet, asking his cousins to turn against Maeve and fight for Terrasen instead. He expected resistance, maybe outright refusal. But every one of his cousins agreed. They launch a coordinated surprise assault on Maeve’s armada, and Rowan signals his fleet to advance, trapping her forces between two attacking sides.

Lorcan watches in disbelief as a third of Maeve’s fleet opens fire on the rest. He recognizes Rowan’s handiwork, passes along the order to press the advantage, and privately acknowledges that Maeve will retaliate. She always does.

Maeve’s answer comes through the blood oath. Fenrys and Gavriel both go rigid at the same moment, seized by Maeve’s compulsion. Fenrys blinks across the ship to Gavriel’s side, and the two of them vanish together. But Gavriel catches Lorcan’s eye first and points westward along the shore.

Lorcan understands immediately that Maeve had never been on the water at all. Maeve was on land, headed toward the coast where Lorcan had left Elide. He hands off command to one of the soldiers and takes a longboat to shore.

Back on the dunes, Elide is hiding in the seagrass when dark clouds roll in from the marshes, far too quickly and deliberately. She recognizes what it means. Someone is cutting Aelin off from Mala’s power. Then a figure appears on the beach.

Empire of Storms Chapter 68

Through the witch mirror, Aelin and Manon witness visions that rewrite much of what Aelin thought she knew.

The first is deeply personal. For months, Nehemia and Elena had been secretly working together, and Nehemia willingly arranged her own death to force Aelin toward her destiny.

The visions then go further back. A thousand years ago, Elena made a deal with the gods after misusing the Lock, and that debt has been passed down to Aelin. To forge a new Lock and seal the three Wyrdkeys back into the gate, Aelin will have to pour out every drop of her power and her life along with it.

Brannon’s role also becomes clear. He hid a Wyrdkey inside the Amulet of Orynth, left coded messages for Aelin throughout the years, and eventually walked into a molten river rather than outlive his grief.

The hardest revelation is the most personal one. Aelin actually died the night her parents were murdered. Elena defied the gods to bring Aelin back. But when everything is over, Elena’s soul will be destroyed rather than reunited with those she loved.

Elena apologizes and tells Aelin that she’ll walk with her through whatever comes next. She then shows Aelin and Manon what must be done.

When the visions clear, Aelin and Manon stand at the edge of the sea. The sounds of a distant battle carry on the air, and Queen Maeve stands before them with a knife at Elide’s throat.

Empire of Storms Chapter 69

Aedion and Lysandra are fighting side by side on their ship, badly outnumbered by Maeve’s fleet. Before Gavriel disappears from the battle, he wraps Aedion in a magical golden shield, and the protection holds even after Gavriel is gone. Without Gavriel, their forces are pushed back onto the defensive.

As the battle wears on, Aedion tells Lysandra to flee if the situation turns hopeless. She ignores him in her own way, nuzzling his cheek before trotting back to keep fighting. Rowan and Dorian are still blasting their magic into Maeve’s fleet and sinking ship after ship. But the enemy keeps coming. Dorian is nearly burnt out, Aedion is wounded, and the tide seems to be turning against their forces.

Then Aedion cries out in pain. Dorian rallies what little magic he has left for what might be a final push. At that moment, a wyvern with shimmering wings drops through the clouds above the fleet, and twelve more wyverns follow close behind.

Empire of Storms Chapter 70

Abraxos arrives with twelve other wyverns carrying Ironteeth witches. Rowan quickly orders the archers to stand down. The witches join the battle on their side, break through the enemy Fae lines, and buy the fleet some breathing room.

One of the riders, Asterin Blackbeak, lands on Lysandra’s ship and asks about Manon. Aedion tells her Manon is there and promises answers if the coven fights with them. Asterin agrees and returns to rejoin her riders. The Thirteen drive hard into the enemy’s southern side while Rowan and Dorian handle anything that slips through. The enemy fleet starts to panic and eventually breaks, turning to flee.

When the fighting dies down, Rowan flies up to survey the wreckage and notices that Maeve’s personal ship, the Nightingale, has vanished. Back on deck, Dorian reports sensing something powerful and ancient near the coast where Elide was sent. He says it feels like fire, shadow, and death, and distinctly female. Rowan realizes the naval battle was never about winning. It was cover for Maeve to slip away and go after Aelin.

Rowan’s magic is nearly spent, and the coast is miles away. He looks toward the wyverns still chasing the fleeing ships and decides that borrowing a wyvern is their only real option.

Empire of Storms Chapter 71

Maeve has Elide as her captive, a blade at her throat. Lorcan appears moments later and, rather than helping, tells Maeve that Aelin has two of the three Wyrdkeys and likely knows where the third Wyrdkey is hidden. Aelin and Maeve fight, but Aelin’s magic is nearly empty after days of deliberate draining through Maeve’s traps, and she loses badly.

Fenrys and Gavriel arrive too late. Gavriel offers to take Aelin’s punishment himself, but Maeve severs his blood oath and strips him of his title. When Fenrys protests, Maeve forces him to his knees.

With Aelin beaten and disarmed, Maeve reveals that she has been engineering events for centuries, including psychically nudging Rowan toward Lyria instead of his true mate, Aelin, then having Lyria killed to shatter him so he would be controllable.

The whole scheme was designed so that when Aelin eventually appeared, Maeve could use their mate bond as leverage to get the Wyrdkeys. Maeve also reveals that Mab’s bloodline runs true in Aelin, meaning Aelin was roughly five years from Settling into full Fae immortality and would’ve had a lifespan of a thousand years or more.

Maeve then gives Aelin an ultimatum. Aelin can come willingly and be handed over to Cairn, a torturer from Maeve’s cadre, or Maeve will take both Aelin and Elide, with Elide facing the same fate.

Empire of Storms Chapter 72

Maeve has cornered Aelin on the beach with a simple threat. Surrender now, or Elide comes along as a prisoner. With her magic completely gone and both Lorcan and Fenrys frozen in place by Maeve’s blood oath, Aelin has nothing left to fight with. She gives in.

Aelin takes a moment to say goodbye to Elide, leaving messages for Lysandra, Aedion, and Rowan. Then Maeve has her kneel in the sand while Cairn whips her, demanding that Aelin count each stroke out loud. Aelin refuses, and every time she stays silent, Cairn starts the count over from the beginning. Eventually, the pain becomes too much, and she cries out.

The whole thing stops only because one of Maeve’s men spots a group heading toward them, almost certainly Rowan. Manon uses the distraction to knock Elide unconscious and carry her away into the marshes. Aelin is dragged to an iron coffin with chains and a mask made specifically to hold her. She doesn’t resist when Maeve puts the mask on her.

Empire of Storms Chapter 73

Aelin had secretly slipped the Wyrdkeys into Manon’s pocket before they were separated, and Manon gets Elide away from the scene. Manon and Elide hide behind a dune and watch as Maeve’s soldiers seal Aelin into an iron box and row her out to a waiting ship. Maeve then turns on Lorcan, stripping him of his blood oath, his titles, and his lands before exiling him from Doranelle. Lorcan crumples to his knees in the sand as Maeve walks away without a second glance. In the distance, Manon hears Abraxos and knows they have to move.

Empire of Storms Chapter 74

Lorcan is kneeling on the beach, surrounded by blood and Aelin’s abandoned weapons and shirt, barely holding himself together. Rowan arrives, presses a blade to his throat, and demands to know where his wife is. Manon and Gavriel tell Rowan what happened. Maeve took Aelin and used the blood oath to hold everyone in place.

Manon tells the group about the Lock, and Elide walks the group through what Aelin gave up. She tells Rowan that Aelin was his mate. Lysandra’s role comes out too. Aelin had asked Lysandra to spend the rest of her life as Aelin’s double, keeping the sacrifice hidden from the world so Terrasen would still have a ruler. When Aedion grasps the full plan, including that he would be expected to secretly father heirs with Lysandra to maintain the royal line, he explodes. He lashes out at Lysandra and walks off.

Before leaving to find shelter among the Thirteen, Elide tells Lorcan she hopes he spends the rest of his endless life in regret and never finds peace.

Meanwhile, Manon learns how the Thirteen survived. She then asks them to follow her north to find the Crochans and build a joint army in Aelin’s name. The Thirteen agree without hesitation.

Manon then approaches Dorian and tells him that during the chaos, Aelin had slipped the two Wyrdkeys into Manon’s pocket, ensuring Maeve left empty-handed. Manon passes the keys to Dorian, and they both know the fight is far from finished. Dorian takes the keys and accepts what lies ahead.

Empire of Storms Chapter 75

Rowan is on the beach trying to come to terms with what has happened to Aelin. Two days earlier, the two had quietly married, with only Aedion and Lysandra present. Now Maeve has taken Aelin and locked her away in iron. Rowan remains kneeling in the sand, sending his thoughts down their newly acknowledged mating bond.

Two unexpected groups then arrive. Galan Ashryver, Crown Prince of Wendlyn, sails in with his entire fleet, honoring a letter Aelin sent that demanded Wendlyn repay its debt to Terrasen. Ilias, son of the Mute Master of the Silent Assassins, appears over the dunes with hundreds of his people, having traveled to fulfill a promise he made to Aelin long ago. The scale of what Aelin planned alone becomes clear.

The group then splits. Lysandra takes on Aelin’s appearance to lead the armies north to Terrasen, since their allies cannot know Aelin is gone. Aedion will go with Lysandra to command the ground forces. Rowan, Lorcan, Gavriel, and Elide will set off to free Aelin from Maeve. Manon and Dorian will ride out with the Thirteen to find the third Wyrdkey and recruit the Crochans.

Before leaving, Rowan finds Aelin’s bloodied shirt in the sand. He holds it for a moment, then lets the wind carry it out to sea. Rowan shifts and flies after the others, carrying Aelin’s scent and the faint feeling that somewhere, through the bond, she answered.
