Empire of Storms Chapter 27
Aelin takes on her old Celaena Sardothien persona, taunts Rolfe, and flirts openly with Rowan. When Rolfe demands to know why she’s there, Aelin tells him she’s come to size up her options before the war hits. He responds sharply, dredging up a past incident in which Celaena destroyed his ships and freed his slaves. Aelin makes it clear that she’d already checked his warehouses and ledgers that morning and that he’d kept his end of the bargain on the slave trade.
Fed up, Rolfe turns to the Fae warriors in the room and offers them a deal. He’ll hand over his ships and men if they kill Celaena right then and there. Aelin tells the warriors they won’t, then whistles for someone to enter. A second woman walks in, looking exactly like Aelin, and Rolfe is floored. The illusion doesn’t last long, though. The newcomer turns out to be Lysandra, and she’d been posing as Aelin while the real Aelin had been sitting in the chair the whole time.
Once the shock settles, Dorian and the Fae warriors confirm that the woman in black is the true Aelin Galathynius. Aelin makes it clear that she’s done playing games and wants to talk Rolfe into backing her cause.
Empire of Storms Chapter 28
Aelin arrives at Rolfe’s office to negotiate an alliance. Rowan, Dorian, and members of the Fae cadre are at the table. Before the talks begin, Rowan pulls Aelin aside. He tells her that the cadre wants Lorcan dead on Maeve’s orders, that most of Adarlan’s fleet has moved into the Gulf of Oro, and that Maeve’s armada is heading toward Eyllwe.
At the meeting, Aelin makes her pitch to Rolfe, offering gold, political backing, and formal recognition as Pirate King. Dorian backs her up with promises from both kingdoms. Rolfe isn’t moved. He tosses out Murtaugh Allsbrook’s letter of support and gives Aelin’s group roughly two days to leave before his standing threat against Aelin goes back into effect.
On the way out, Gavriel corners Aelin and demands to know where his son is. Aelin stalls him while Lysandra slips away to keep Aedion out of sight before Gavriel and Aedion can cross paths unprepared.
Back at the Ocean Rose, Rowan and Dorian brief the group on what happened in Rifthold. Aedion asks for tactical details about the Ironteeth witch legion. The group considers turning Manon Blackbeak against her own people, and Dorian raises the question of what the witches are actually getting from their deal with Erawan.
Aelin wraps things up by sharing what she witnessed in Ilium and Brannon’s directive to find the Lock. For now, her immediate priorities are to win Rolfe over and use his map to track down the Lock.
Empire of Storms Chapter 29
Aedion and Lysandra are waiting in a dead end alley in Skull’s Bay, playing the roles of a street worker and a paying customer. Their goal is to dangle the Amulet of Orynth in front of Rolfe’s men and use Rolfe’s interest in the amulet to gain access to the map he carries. The whole scheme was Rowan’s idea.
Dorian stops by to check in on Aedion and Lysandra’s progress. There’s nothing to report, and Aedion sends Dorian off with a cold brush-off. Lysandra rebukes Aedion, telling him that Dorian has been through a lot and deserves basic decency. They argue, and Aedion grudgingly concedes that he’ll make an effort.
The conversation turns to Aedion’s father, and Lysandra asks him a harder question about what Aedion actually wants for himself rather than what the mission requires. Aedion admits that he’s never really had the chance to think that way. He asks if she’ll come with him the next morning when he goes to meet his father, and Lysandra doesn’t quite answer before someone interrupts them.
A young woman matching Rowan’s description of Rolfe’s barmaid wanders into the alley, recognizes Aedion and Lysandra immediately, and slips away without a word. They wait to see if anyone follows her, but nobody does. As they head back to the inn, Aedion wonders if the woman had been sent ahead just to see what they were carrying.
Empire of Storms Chapter 30
Elide and Lorcan are traveling with a carnival caravan under false identities, posing as a married couple. For the past two weeks, Elide, traveling under the name Marion, has been feeding Lorcan information about Morath in exchange for his protection. Elide has been working through the details floor by floor during their daily trips to gather firewood. When Lorcan pushes Elide to describe the dungeons, she refuses, and they clash. But Elide eventually agrees to continue at her own pace.
Back at camp, the group has finally found dry ground and set up a tent for Elide and Lorcan to share. Lorcan arranges a bath for Elide and washes her clothes himself, partly to build goodwill and keep Elide cooperative. While Elide bathes, Lorcan notices that she’d hidden something under the bedroll.
That evening, Elide tells Lorcan about her uncle Vernon, a commander at Morath who’d had her brought there to be used in Valg crossbreeding experiments and locked her in the dungeon when she resisted. Lorcan offers to kill Vernon at no cost to Elide, and she accepts. Elide then confirms that someone had deliberately destroyed the catacombs but refuses to say who was responsible.
Lorcan notices the scarring around both of Elide’s ankles. Elide tells him that the chains came long before the dungeon. When Lorcan asks why Vernon did it, she tells him to ask Vernon himself when he kills him.
Empire of Storms Chapter 31
Aelin and Rowan break into the inn room where Gavriel and Fenrys are staying. The two Fae warriors are awake and armed, and the conversation that follows is tense but controlled. Aelin uses the meeting to probe how Maeve’s blood oath works. Gavriel explains that the bond reflects the ruler’s intent and that, because Maeve swore her warriors to total compliance, they have no choice but to obey her. The contrast with the bond between Aelin and Rowan, which formed under very different circumstances, is what makes Aelin’s situation unusual.
Then Aelin tells Gavriel and Fenrys that Maeve’s armada is headed for Eyllwe and that her own plans could put her on a collision course with the fleet. She asks whether Maeve sent them after Lorcan’s Wyrdkeys and the ring, but neither warrior gives a clear answer. Gavriel does volunteer one useful detail. Rolfe has obtained weapons called firelances, developed on the southern continent, that are powerful enough for a single fighter to use in battle.
Aelin and Rowan leave shortly after. On the rooftops, Aelin admits that she’s unnerved by the fact that they’re up against two rulers who’ve been scheming since before most kingdoms existed. Rowan reassures her, and they share a tender moment in the moonlight.
Empire of Storms Chapter 32
Aedion spends a restless night steeling himself to meet his father for the first time. When Lysandra returns to the room drained and dizzy from holding her shift too long, he helps her into bed. The next morning, Lysandra takes one look at him, decides he needs better clothes, and raids Rowan’s wardrobe on his behalf.
The meeting at Rolfe’s tavern goes nothing like Aedion planned. Faced with his father standing right in front of him, years of grief pour out before Aedion can stop them. He tells Gavriel how his mother died young and alone while protecting Aedion from Maeve. Aedion then warns his father that if Maeve comes after his family, he won’t hesitate to act. He walks out while Gavriel is still reaching for words.
Aedion finds a spot high above the bay and sits there until his emotions settle, with Lysandra beside him. When he worries that his outburst has cost them a potential ally, Lysandra tells him that Gavriel would crawl over hot coals for him. The mood lifts enough for them to laugh together before heading back down.
Back at the Sea Dragon, Aelin presses Rolfe about joining her alliance. Before the conversation can go anywhere, she spots a map showing Morath’s armies locked in a solid line across the middle of the continent, with more forces massing near Eyllwe. Morath has already cut off any route to aid the North.
Empire of Storms Chapter 33
Aelin and her companions learn that Erawan’s legions are massed south of the Avery, poised to wipe out Eyllwe. Aelin immediately understands that this isn’t a random military move. Erawan knows her history with Eyllwe and means to break her through the kingdom.
Turning to Rolfe, Aelin reveals that she knows he’s the Mycenian heir and tells him he owes her bloodline a debt. She offers him Ilium as proof of good faith and demands his armada in return. He refuses. At that point, Aelin releases a burst of fire magic across the bay. To everyone in the room, it looks like a necessary release of power. But the display is actually a deliberate summons that draws the Valg forces from the Dead End to the island.
When Rolfe still won’t budge, Aelin announces that she’s leaving and taking the cadre with her. Before anyone can move, the watchtower bells ring. Rolfe’s quartermaster enters, white-faced with news that eight warships packed with soldiers, flanked by two sea-wyverns, are bearing down on the island fast.
With annihilation suddenly real and close, Rolfe comes to the table. Aelin offers him land, hereditary titles, and the right to keep whatever gold he takes from Morath ships. He agrees and hands over his fleet.
Aelin then assigns positions. Dorian takes the southern watchtower and holds his magic in reserve. Aedion goes to the northern watchtower to man the mounted harpoon. Aelin boards Rolfe’s fastest ship with Rowan, Lysandra, Fenrys, and Gavriel, then sails directly into the heart of the enemy fleet.
Empire of Storms Chapter 34
Aelin sees Morath’s fleet closing in and decides that this moment is bigger than securing Rolfe’s alliance. She wants potential allies across the world to see what she’s capable of so they’ll think twice about staying neutral.
The Sea Dragon rows toward Ship-Breaker while Aelin and Rowan position themselves on deck, iron chains anchored to the mast to keep them grounded when their magic peaks. Aedion races to the top of his watchtower and takes control of a giant iron harpoon. Across the bay, Dorian takes up his own position.
Aelin sends Lysandra ahead, and the shifter drops off the side of the ship before transforming beneath the surface into a massive sea dragon. The sight stops Rolfe’s crew cold. For the Mycenians among them, the transformation means everything, because their old stories said their people would come home when the sea dragons returned.
Underwater, Lysandra pulls ahead of the ship and weaves through the reef to get a feel for her new body. She locates two enemy sea-wyverns moving in from open water and digs her talons into the rock to hold her position. She knows she won’t win the fight with strategy or restraint. It will come down to pure survival instinct, and she lets herself go there.
Empire of Storms Chapter 35
Aelin and Rowan sail toward an enemy fleet on the Sea Dragon. As they draw close, Aelin and Rowan chain themselves together with iron manacles, cut their palms, and join hands to combine their magic. Aelin has spent three days pulling power from deep within herself, and Rowan funnels his own magic into Aelin to strengthen it.
When Rolfe gives the signal, something goes wrong. The release of power far exceeds what Aelin and Rowan prepared for, cracking open a deeper level tied to the Wyrdkey Aelin is wearing. A goddess named Deanna takes over Aelin’s body and shoves Aelin’s consciousness out of the way.
Deanna delivers a message to Rowan about the Lock and the Wyrdkeys, then fills Aelin’s hand with moonfire. Rather than turning the moonfire on the enemy fleet, Deanna swings toward the innocent city in the bay. Rowan steps directly into Deanna’s path to stop her. The sight of Rowan in danger breaks through everything, and Aelin fights her way back into her own body, throwing the goddess out. Aelin wrenches her arm sideways just in time, and the moonfire tears through part of the ship, a section of the dark fleet, and the edge of the island.
Empire of Storms Chapter 36
Aelin surfaces in the middle of a disaster, still reeling from what just happened. Deanna apparently took over Aelin’s body, and she’s barely processing it when Fenrys pulls her out of the water. He uses his short-distance jumping ability to move them both away from the wreckage. But the magic drains him almost completely by the time they reach a nearby reef, where Rowan and Gavriel wait. Most of Morath’s fleet has been wiped out, but three ships are still closing in on them.
Meanwhile, Lysandra, in sea dragon form, has been working underwater. She pulls Rolfe and his first mate out of the debris before they drown, then goes after the enemy ships. She rams the first one until the hull gives way.
Before Lysandra can reach the second ship, one of Morath’s sea wyverns hits her, and a second sea wyvern joins in. She lures them both to a sandbar and kills the first by breaking its neck. The second sea wyvern abandons the fight and turns toward Aelin and the others on the reef instead. Lysandra chases it down and drives it into the hull of the warship, destroying both the sea wyvern and the ship.
Lysandra surfaces, exhausted. Then Aelin starts screaming a warning from the reef, and Lysandra turns to find three more massive shapes charging at Lysandra through open water.
Empire of Storms Chapter 37
Three adult sea-wyverns close in on Lysandra at the mouth of the bay while Aelin and the others are stranded on a reef with no magic. The Valg soldiers cheering from the last warship confirm that the encounter is a trap and that the younger wyverns were only bait.
Lysandra goes on the offensive. She lures one bull into the warship, and when it follows her onto the wreckage, the bull impales itself on the broken masts and sinks with the hull. She draws the second bull into Dorian’s range. He locks it in ice and destroys it with the catapult.
The third bull is still in the water, and Lysandra is bleeding badly from arrow wounds. Gavriel shouts a warning when the bull dives to ambush her from below. Lysandra swims toward Aedion’s watchtower, and Aedion holds his shot until the bull launches up to seize her. Then he drives the spear through its throat.
Lysandra drags herself onto the beach, severely wounded and trapped in dragon form. Aedion talks her back from a feral state with a mix of teasing and a marriage proposal. When Aelin and Rowan arrive, their recovering magic slowly closes Lysandra’s wounds. Aedion stays with Lysandra while Aelin heads back to deal with Rolfe.
Empire of Storms Chapter 38
After the harbor incident, Aelin meets briefly with Rolfe, who confronts her about nearly destroying his city. She deflects with bravado, presenting the alliance as something that protects him, and accepts responsibility for the men lost.
Before Aelin leaves, Rolfe shares how he came to have his map tattoos. A mysterious figure offered him the power to become Pirate Lord, and the price turned out to be his mother and sister, who drowned searching for him after he made the deal. Rolfe leaves Aelin with the question of what her own price will be.
Aelin retreats to a nearby beach with Rowan, still shaken from being possessed by Deanna. What disturbs her most is that Rowan stepped into the path of Aelin’s attack to stop her. They talk through what the possession meant, including the strange title Deanna gave Aelin, and Rowan reassures her that her growing power changes nothing between them.
On the beach, Aelin and Rowan confess their love for each other and have a sexual encounter.
