Empire of Storms Chapters 51–62 Summary

This Sarah J. Maas Empire of Storms chapter summary contains full spoilers.

Empire of Storms Chapter 51

For three days, Aelin and her crew sail past burned villages along the Eyllwe coast. Unable to stop, Aelin repeatedly pushes her power out from the ship to douse the fires, and by the third day, she’s exhausted and parched. Rowan flies to shore to investigate, but the answer is always the same. The villagers say a sudden darkness fell before flaming arrows came. But there’s no trace of Erawan’s forces or Maeve anywhere.

To make things worse, rumors begin spreading that Aelin herself is burning Eyllwe as punishment for the kingdom’s failure to help Terrasen ten years ago.

Somewhere during those three days, Rowan realizes Aelin isn’t pregnant. The two had already discussed her choice to stop taking a contraceptive tonic. Aelin had reasoned that her Fae blood might make conception harder and that she couldn’t risk losing the chance to secure a bloodline for Terrasen.

On the third day, the ships anchor at the Stone Marshes, a waterlogged plain of drowned ruins that stretches far inland.

Manon learns she’ll travel with the group going inland without Abraxos, as the open marshes are too exposed for a wyvern. She says goodbye to him on the ship’s deck and watches until he disappears. She then pulls off the red Crochan cloak that had belonged to her half-sister and drops it into the sea. Aelin and Dorian both see her do it. Later, as they row toward shore, Aelin tells Manon that the faces of the dead never leave you. Manon realizes Aelin wasn’t talking about the Thirteen.

Empire of Storms Chapter 52

Lorcan feels a pull from his god, Hellas, drawing him south and west through Eyllwe, and Elide follows without resistance. They abandon their barge and walk through open grassland until the land drops sharply away before them, revealing a vast sunken marsh full of crumbling ruins. Elide feels unsettled by the place, as though the people who died there had never truly left. Lorcan presses on.

It takes four days to pick their way across. Elide and Lorcan watch for large creatures lurking in the water and get little sleep.

On the fourth night, sheltered in a ruined hall, Elide brings up Maeve. Lorcan admits he’s loved his queen for centuries. But she’s never returned his feelings and once laughed off his offer entirely. Elide gently tells him that what he describes doesn’t sound like love. The exchange draws them closer. She tells him there will always be a place for him in Perranth if he needs one, then she kisses him. He kisses her back, and for a brief stretch, the bleakness around them seems to fall away.

Then Lorcan spots something moving to the northeast, a darkness spreading across the sky and swallowing the stars. He recognizes the darkness as an army of ilken, and the moment is over.

Empire of Storms Chapter 53

The group has been wading through the Stone Marshes for two days, making slow progress toward Mala’s Lock. Rowan returns from a scouting flight and reports that they should arrive the following afternoon, though whatever he sensed with his magic left him unsettled. They make camp for the night on a raised island.

Dinner is interrupted when a marsh creature launches itself at Manon out of the dark. Dorian stops the creature with his magic and asks whether he should kill it or release it. Manon tells him to let it go.

When Manon spots the Eye of Elena around Aelin’s neck, she corrects the assumption behind its name. She explains that the symbol belongs to Ironteeth religious tradition, not Elena. She tells the story of the Crochan curse and recounts the dying words of the last Crochan queen, whose final declaration has kept the Ironteeth in exile for five centuries. Breaking the curse requires someone who carries both bloodlines, which puts Manon at the center of it.

Later, Gavriel and Fenrys find Rowan on watch with two warnings. They believe Aelin and Manon have been steered toward each other by something much older and larger than any of them, and that Maeve has been positioning herself to take advantage of it. Maeve has also given the cadre position to Cairn, a warrior known for cruelty. Fenrys suspects Maeve’s plan is to wait until Aelin has spent herself destroying Erawan, then move against her at her weakest.

Fenrys then asks Rowan, in barely more than a whisper, to kill him rather than let Maeve order him to hurt Aelin.

Empire of Storms Chapter 54

The group pushes through a swamp toward the Lock. Along the way, Manon brings up a question about what will happen to people with Valg blood once the keys banish Erawan. Dorian has no answer. But he tells Manon he’d use the keys himself without hesitation and would have no problem doing so on a continental scale. His reasoning traces back to the woman he lost, someone who died afraid and alone, and that grief has never left him.

By midday, the group reaches the Lock inside a half-ruined stone dome. They scout the area and find no immediate threat. Aelin and Rowan share a brief warm moment before pressing on, and she nearly tells him something she’s been holding back but stops when they round a corner and find what they came for. A sealed stone chest covered in Wyrdmarks waits there, not the altar Aelin had assumed it was at first glance.

Aelin and Manon examine the markings together. Aelin recognizes some of them but not all. Then Lorcan’s magical warning signal hits the group out of nowhere. Rowan climbs the ruins to get a clear sightline, returns, and delivers the news that five hundred ilken are already in the air.

Empire of Storms Chapter 55

Elide and Lorcan race through the marshes, trying to reach Aelin and Rowan before a wave of ilken reaches them first.

Back at the ruins, Aelin and her group realize they have no way out. Erawan has sent five hundred ilken straight for them. Aelin wants to use the Wyrdkey as a weapon, but Rowan immediately rejects the idea. That frustration spills over into a fight with Aedion, who blames Aelin for provoking Erawan by showing off her power too openly.

The group moves past the argument and starts planning. Manon takes position on a ruin wall with a bow. Lysandra shifts and heads into the marsh to stir up the local creatures, hoping to use them as a second line of attack. Aedion, Gavriel, and Fenrys will push the ilken toward Aelin, Rowan, and Dorian.

Aelin then walks out alone onto the open plain to close the distance between herself and the army. Rowan calls after Aelin, reminding her who she is. Aelin runs toward the ilken and drives herself deeper into her fire magic than ever before, preparing to unleash everything she has.

Empire of Storms Chapter 56

Elide and Lorcan arrive at the edge of a flooded plain and realize too late that they’re standing on the wrong side of the battle line. When Elide spots Aelin alone in the middle of the marsh facing an army of five hundred ilken, the sight of her queen immediately undoes her.

Aelin unleashes her full fire magic on the ilken. Lorcan throws himself over Elide and pours everything he has into a shield to keep both of them alive through the firestorm. From the reeds, Aedion, Gavriel, and Fenrys pick off the ilken on the flanks while Rowan and Dorian layer in ice and wind. Together, Aelin’s group obliterates the entire legion.

Once the flames die out, Rowan walks across the smoldering marshes to reach Aelin, who’s spent and vulnerable. Lorcan suspects the real reason Rowan went to Aelin was to hold her up now that her power is gone and she’s left wide open.

Elide asks what they should do next. Lorcan decides they’ll go introduce themselves, though his actual aim is to get close to Aelin, who carries a Wyrdkey paired with the one Elide holds. As Elide and Lorcan wade through the still-scorching water toward Aelin, Lorcan notices that Fenrys and Gavriel have slipped away from their positions in the reeds.

Empire of Storms Chapter 57

Elide and Lorcan approach Aelin’s group after the battle, but before they reach Aelin, two of Maeve’s warriors ambush them. Fenrys and Gavriel attack Lorcan on orders, and when Elide throws herself in front of him, Fenrys bites into her arm instead of Lorcan’s neck. Lorcan drops his shield so Gavriel can heal Elide, fully expecting Fenrys to kill him for it. Rowan steps in before that happens and invokes Aelin’s name to pause the blood oath, which buys just enough time to stop the fight.

Aelin and Aedion arrive, and Aelin immediately recognizes Elide. She breaks down and delivers the last words Elide’s mother spoke before her death, words Aelin had carried for more than ten years.

Manon appears shortly after, and the three women are briefly reunited. Elide then hands Aelin the cloth Kaltain died to protect, passing along Kaltain’s final message about keeping her promise. Manon introduces Elide to Dorian, and Aelin formally claims Elide as Lady of Perranth. Aelin and Manon have a brief standoff over who has claim to Elide, though it stays lighthearted, and the group moves on together.

As everyone departs, Rowan lingers behind to speak with Lorcan. Lorcan reveals that the dark god led him to Aelin’s group.

Empire of Storms Chapter 58

The group finds themselves in a flooded temple ruin, where Aelin opens a stone chest that she hoped would contain the Lock, the object Aelin needs to seal the Wyrdkeys away for good. Instead, the chest holds only an old, grimy mirror marked with the Eye of Elena and a witch symbol.

Manon recognizes it as a witch mirror and uses the moment to reveal something the group didn’t know. Erawan has been constructing massive mirror towers, mobile enough to move with an army and powerful enough to wipe out entire forces on a battlefield. Two towers are already finished and sitting in the Ferian Gap. Nobody can work out what this specific mirror does, so the group wraps things up and starts moving toward the coast.

Lysandra catches something wrong before the group reaches the beach. From the top of a sand dune, they see a foreign fleet of roughly a hundred ships boxing in their own fleet, with a small armed group waiting on the shore. Lorcan wants to fall back, but Aelin walks straight down to meet the armed group.

The group’s leader turns out to be Ansel of Briarcliff, Queen of the Wastes, an old and complicated acquaintance of Aelin’s. After a sharp, loaded exchange between Aelin and Ansel, it becomes clear that Ansel has shown up as an ally and arrived right when she was supposed to.

Empire of Storms Chapter 59

Ansel waits with a fleet of ships. Manon immediately objects and warns that Melisande is aligned with Morath, so accepting the fleet means accepting that alliance too.

Aelin corrects Manon. Ansel leads the Western Wastes, which stand with Terrasen, and Aelin formally introduces the two women. Manon then claims her own authority over the Wastes instead of ceding it to Ansel.

Ansel explains how the plan unfolded. Months earlier, Aelin had sent Ansel a series of signals that set things in motion. Ansel split her army, sending half north toward Terrasen and leading the rest into Melisande, whose queen let Ansel’s forces through the gates, unsuspecting. Ansel took the city, seized the fleet, and recovered Aelin’s horse, Kasida. Terrasen’s flag now flies over the Melisande capital.

Aedion steps up to handle the military logistics and works out where Ansel’s army should march next. He’s clearly stung that Aelin kept him in the dark, but Aedion doesn’t confront her about it.

Alone at the ship’s railing, Aedion and Lysandra talk. Lysandra admits how afraid she is of losing the people she’s come to care about, and Aedion is honest about what that fear costs and what it takes to keep going. The conversation turns more personal, and Aedion and Lysandra acknowledge what’s growing between them. They agree to take it slowly and see where it leads.

Empire of Storms Chapter 60

Aelin gathers her companions in the galley and lays out her next plan. She wants Ansel to find the hidden Crochan witches and offer them a share of the Wastes as an incentive. Manon objects, insisting Aelin has no right to make promises about the Ironteeth witches’ homeland. Aelin points out that the Ironteeth cannot hold the land because of the curse, so sharing it is the only path to reclaiming it.

Ansel then brings unsettling news. The coastal fires weren’t Erawan’s work but Maeve’s. Witnesses saw Fae soldiers starting them, and Maeve has been blaming Aelin to turn the surrounding kingdoms against her. The group starts to worry that Maeve may already be moving toward an undefended Terrasen, and Aelin calls for everyone to sail at first light.

Later, alone with Rowan, Aelin watches him piece together her plan. He realizes she’s spent months positioning armies for a coordinated strike on Morath from multiple directions. Aelin admits she still needs more soldiers and time, then takes Rowan’s hand and tells him she needs something from him.

Meanwhile, Dorian visits Manon late at night, and they sleep together. Afterward, Manon lies awake, unsettled by how much she’d allowed herself to give in and uncertain about where she belongs now that her coven’s fate is in doubt.

Elsewhere, Elide and Lorcan are on the verge of an honest conversation when a shout from the watch interrupts them. A second armada has appeared on the horizon. Fenrys identifies the fleet as Maeve’s.

Empire of Storms Chapter 61

Maeve’s armada has Aelin’s group completely outmatched, and Maeve sends a rowboat with a message giving Aelin until dawn to surrender. The delay is deliberate, designed to let fear spread through the ranks. Aelin, Rowan, and Aedion spend the day running through every possible option and come up empty. Aelin falls into a quiet, stunned state that Rowan has never seen in her before, and by nightfall the group has no plan.

While Aelin sleeps, Rowan sneaks out and shifts into his hawk form, flying through the darkness into Maeve’s fleet. He finds his cousin Endymion, a Fae prince who commands part of the armada, and the two have a brief, guarded exchange before Rowan lays out his request. Enda agrees to think it over. Rowan then moves from ship to ship through the night, making the same appeal to each of his cousins who command fleets within the armada, and every one of them gives Rowan the same careful, noncommittal answer.

Empire of Storms Chapter 62

Before dawn, Dorian brings Manon and Aelin down to the cargo hold, where he uncovers the witch mirror he had someone move there. He tells them he doesn’t think the mirror is a weapon. His theory is that it works as a kind of guide, one that will show Aelin how to use the two keys she already has without destroying herself or wasting what little magic she has left. If Aelin can learn that, she might be able to end Maeve’s armada before the battle even starts.

Aelin is skeptical. She’s short on time, and she clearly doesn’t love that someone else solved this before she did. But Dorian holds his ground, pointing out that fighting with steel while running low on power is the riskier option and that the mirror could let Aelin act before the real cost of the battle sets in. Eventually, Aelin relents, less because Dorian convinces her and more because she knows she’s out of options.

Aedion comes clattering down into the hold. Aelin and Manon don’t give him a chance to object. They put their hands together on the glass and vanish.
