Daggermouth Chapter 29: At What Cost?
Greyson wakes bound to a chair in a glass cell. Through the wall, he hears Shadera being beaten in the cell next to his. He screams for them to stop and offers himself in her place. The noise falls silent. Maximus arrives.
Maximus tells Greyson he’s known about his smuggling operation for months and tracked every shipment. Then he delivers something worse. Brooker was a traitor. For years, Brooker lived a double life in Cardinal under a false name, smuggling prisoners out of Heart detention and building toward a coup. When Maximus discovered the truth, he contracted a Daggermouth to kill Brooker and framed him as a Heart informant so the killing would look like rebel justice instead of a father eliminating his own son. Shadera was the mercenary who carried out the contract.
Greyson asks Shadera directly, and she tells him she didn’t know Brooker was his brother. Maximus reveals that he ordered the contract on Greyson’s life as well, and that both brothers’ deaths at Daggermouth hands were meant to justify The Culling publicly. He adds that cities to the north are collapsing, and he intends to empty the rings to make room for their displaced wealthy elites.
Maximus gives Greyson and Shadera an ultimatum. They must cooperate at the Vow ceremony and use their public standing to bring Heart loyalists forward to be spared, and he’ll consider leaving parts of the rings intact. If they refuse, he’ll make them watch thousands die before killing them both. He leaves.
Shadera tries to speak to Greyson through the glass, but he tells her to stop.
Daggermouth Chapter 30: Those Two Things
Sitting across from Brooker, the brother she thought was dead, Lira is too stunned to speak as the others continue planning a strike on the Heart.
Lira confronts Brooker with fury, demanding to know how he could let his family suffer while he lived free. Brooker tells her faking his death was the only way he could keep working with the rebellion. Lira challenges Mikel on his claim that Greyson is his son, and he answers that he and Lira’s mother were in love before she was forced to marry Maximus.
When Jaeger tries to shut the conversation down, Lira draws on him and demands the truth about the contracts on her brothers. Jaeger explains he took the contract on Brooker without knowing it was him, since Brooker was living under a false name. When Farrow found Brooker barely alive, she contacted Jaeger, and together they staged his death convincingly enough to fool Maximus.
The plan for Greyson was to use his contract as cover to smuggle him out, with Shadera firing doctored bullets to make him appear dead. It fell apart because Shadera had a hidden weapon Jaeger didn’t know about, and Greyson unmasked himself at the wrong moment.
Jameson erupts over being kept in the dark, but Callum ends the argument by reminding everyone that Greyson and Shadera’s lives are on the line. Lira realizes Callum has known about Brooker all along. When Brooker asks if she can provide a distraction for the mission, she agrees, and the cold certainty in her own voice unsettles her.
Daggermouth Chapter 31: Past Tense
Dehydrated and starving, Shadera sits in her cell. Her mind keeps circling back to Contract 205 and the photograph from Greyson’s room until the connection finally clicks. Levi Pierce was Brooker. She had killed Greyson’s brother without ever knowing it, and the truth begins to pull apart everything she thought she stood for.
Shadera begs Greyson to speak to her. When he finally does, he tells her she lied to him. She insists she had no idea who Brooker really was, since he’d been using a false name. Greyson says he thought he could trust her, that he’d started to care about her, and that he may never be able to look at her without thinking of what she did. That lands harder than anything Maximus put her through.
Greyson hears Shadera crying, and it pulls at him even through his anger. He remembers an early moment when she looked him in the eye and told him he was a better man than his father. The urge to protect her rises in him again, but he forces it down.
Daggermouth Chapter 32: 3 AM
In the early hours before the Vow ceremony, Callum sits at his desk waiting for word from Jameson. The call comes through, and Jameson confirms the Boundary has been cleared, its residents moved into underground shelters so any bombs Maximus unleashes will hit nothing but empty streets. Callum activates a surveillance loop to cover the Boundary and sends Jameson toward Cardinal.
Callum then breaks into the Heart’s security mainframe and gets to work, manipulating camera feeds, thinning guard coverage, and introducing delays at key checkpoints to give their people room to move when the moment arrives.
Daggermouth Chapter 33: 5 AM
Lira stands at her apartment window in the hours before the Vow ceremony. She runs through the day’s schedule, knowing that while Greyson and Shadera are pushed through the public rituals, the rebellion will move beneath the surface, and anyone in the rings not actively fighting will be sheltered underground.
Her thoughts turn to Callum and the fact that he knew Brooker was alive all the years she spent grieving him. She feels hurt, but she also finds she understands why.
Lira picks up her mask and decides she’ll never put it on again after today. She opens a hidden drawer holding years of evidence she has gathered against her father. At the bottom sits a sealed case containing a plan she has kept entirely to herself. She closes the drawer without acting on it yet.
Farrow calls to say everyone is ready. Lira answers yes and hangs up.
Daggermouth Chapter 34: 7 AM
Jameson confirms that the last of the Cardinal residents are sealed into shelters. Callum radios through to report that the surveillance loop is running and Heart security can no longer see the Cardinal sectors. Jameson assembles his team of a hundred rebels armed with Veyra weapons smuggled in through Callum’s network and leads them into the tunnels.
Hawk reports that Farrow’s unit has locked down the access points to the power grid, and Jaeger’s teams slipped inside the Heart during the night shift change. With the pieces in place, Jameson and his people begin the march toward the Heart.
Daggermouth Chapter 35: 9 AM
Maximus visits the cells to remind Greyson of their agreement and inform him that the Vow ceremony begins in three hours. He leaves, and Mikel orders Greyson and Shadera released.
When Shadera is brought out, she can barely stand, her face swollen and her body bearing the marks of what the Veyra have done to her. Mikel gives Greyson and Shadera water and takes them up to Greyson’s apartment.
Once they’re alone, Shadera forces herself toward the bathroom and refuses Greyson’s help. He follows when he hears her scream trying to lift her shirt, and he catches her before she hits the floor. He holds her while she cries and apologizes for Brooker. Greyson doesn’t offer forgiveness, but he stays with her and tells her he’s going to help her.
Greyson cuts away Shadera’s clothes, sees years-old scarring alongside fresh damage from the Veyra, and lifts her into the bath. He kneels beside the tub until some of the tension leaves her face. He thinks of his brother and realizes the hatred he carried from his cell has shifted into something harder to name. While he still doesn’t know if he can forgive her, he can’t hold her responsible either.
At the door, Greyson tells Shadera the Veyra who hurt her won’t survive the day, and that his father is next.
Daggermouth Chapter 36: 11 AM
Callum works through a series of status checks as the plan enters its final phase. He radios Jaeger to confirm the plaza cameras are blind and orders his snipers into position. On the Veyra transmitter, Mikel reports that Greyson and Shadera will move to the plaza in forty-five minutes. Jameson checks in to say his team is at the maintenance shaft and ready to ascend into the Heart.
Lira confirms the media drones are in position and that Brooker and his Veyra are working to secure the bombs. Before the call ends, Callum tells her he loves her. She says it back and promises to return to him when it’s done.
Daggermouth Chapter 37: 11:45 AM
Shadera finds a dress and a note from Lira on the bed. The note tells her not to cover the damage Maximus caused so the world can see what kind of man Lira’s father is. Lira also writes that Shadera can trust the captain. Shadera takes the painkillers and puts on the dress.
Greyson receives a matching note with the same message about Mikel. He and Shadera confirm they’re reading the situation the same way.
From the bedroom floor, Greyson pulls a hidden cache and arms them both. Some of the tension between them breaks as they joke about which of them will get to Maximus first.
Mikel appears in the doorway and tells Greyson and Shadera that the ceremony starts in fifteen minutes.
Daggermouth Chapter 38: The Vow
Before the ceremony, Lira calls Callum to tell him what she has kept from him. After the consummation, Maximus and his men assault the bride while forcing the groom to watch, a ritual meant to seal his submission to the Heart. Lira has a plan she knows Callum would try to stop. She asks him to alert the others and ends the call.
Greyson and Shadera speak their vows. When the golden veil descends, Callum discovers he’s been locked out of the Heart’s security system, and Farrow can’t cut power to the checkpoints, leaving Jameson’s teams unable to advance.
The veil rises to reveal Greyson and Shadera without their masks. A note slips from Shadera’s hand and lands at Maximus’s feet. He picks it up and reads Lira’s instruction for Greyson and Shadera to leave their masks off.
Lira holds Maximus’s gaze, removes her dress to reveal the white slip beneath, and lets her mask fall. Women throughout the plaza follow, shedding their gowns and masks to show years of scarring their clothing had concealed. Maximus demands to know what Lira has done. She steps in front of the media drone and tells the crowd the power of the Heart belongs to its women, and they intend to reclaim it.
Daggermouth Chapter 39: This Is What Hope Does
Callum learns Lira’s in danger and sprints to reach her, but every ally he contacts goes silent. Guards at the plaza checkpoint turn him away under presidential lockdown orders. He fights past them, kills two officers, and pushes through.
On the platform, Shadera, Greyson, and Captain Mikel all aim their weapons at Maximus, who doesn’t flinch. Instead, Maximus calmly reveals the rebellion is already finished. His forces have swept through the Entertainment District, dismantled the Daggermouths, and taken Jaeger, Kestrel Farrow, and Callum prisoner.
Then come two more blows. Brooker is alive and has been planted inside the rebellion for years, passing intelligence to Maximus and drawing the rebel leaders into the open. Greyson learns he isn’t Maximus’s son at all. His biological father is Mikel.
Before anyone can respond, gunfire erupts across the platform. Callum breaks free and runs toward Lira, but Brooker shoots him from behind. He falls and doesn’t get up. Lira throws herself over his body and takes a bullet in the shoulder.
Greyson, Shadera, and Mikel are overpowered. Maximus orders Lira torn from Callum and has Brooker taken to safety. He then stands over Greyson and raises his gun. Shadera screams as the shot goes off.
Daggermouth Chapter 40: Just Not For You
Mikel throws himself in front of Greyson and takes Maximus’s bullet. While no one’s paying attention to her, Elara picks up a fallen officer’s gun, kills the Veyra holding Shadera, then works through the remaining officers before turning on Maximus.
Elara removes her mask, orders Maximus to kneel, and pulls his mask from his face. She tells him he never broke her. While he built his power on dominance and control, she was learning everything she needed. She reveals she’s Python. Elara tells him a reckoning is coming for the city, but he won’t live to see it. Then she pulls the trigger.
