The Traitor Queen Chapter 49
Gamire is taken, and the prisoners are freed. Aren finds Taryn alive, kept captive after surviving the shipbreaker strike they all thought had killed her. When he tells her Lara saved her life, Taryn throws wine in his face and says it would have been better if Lara had stabbed her in the heart. Aren tells her Lara is only there to fight and will leave when the war is won.
Taryn walks away, and Lia follows. Aren searches the crowd for Lara. He had seen her earlier, but now she’s gone, and plenty of people on the island have reason to want her dead. He asks Jor where she is.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 50
Lara slips away from the celebration to treat a serious wound on her leg. She’s trying to stitch it herself in Nana’s empty house when Aren finds her and takes over. While he works, she begs him not to leave her behind when they move on. He tells her they’ll see how she is by morning. A few moments later, they end up sleeping together.
When Lara wakes hours later, Aren is already dressed with his back to her. He tells her he’s going on patrol. She tries to get him to stay, but he insists that what happened was a mistake and that he can’t be around her because he promised his people they were done. She tells him she loves him. He says he’s sorry and walks out.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 51
Aren makes his way back to the village fire, where Jor is waiting. Jor wastes no time letting him know he’s aware of what happened, then tells him he has to choose between Lara and Ithicana because Aren can’t hold onto both. Keeping Lara around will only make things worse, so he needs to end it now and not drag it out.
Rising from his seat, Aren tells everyone to get the boats ready. They’re heading to Midwatch that night.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 52
Lara wakes up alone. The village is deserted, and Aren is gone. She falls apart for a moment, then steadies herself.
From the south, a horn signal passes through, relaying news up the chain. The Valcottans have taken Southwatch. Ithicana has won its freedom.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 53
Aren and his forces retake Midwatch, but the victory comes at a steep cost. News soon follows that Valcotta and Harendell have secured the remaining garrisons, yet something feels off. The Maridrinian fleet has vanished, and most garrisons were left nearly empty.
Realization strikes Aren. Keris must have warned Silas, but a full retreat doesn’t fit what Aren knows of the man. Silas was never after the bridge. His true target was always Ithicana’s people.
Aren runs to the lookout tower and spots an enormous signal fire in the distance. Eranahl is in trouble.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 54
Lara leaves Gamire Island and walks south along the bridge toward Maridrina. The liberation of Ithicana doesn’t bring the relief she expected. With nothing left to work toward, she keeps moving, numb and without direction.
A massive signal fire catches Lara’s eye, burning from the highest peak in Ithicana. She knows what it means. Eranahl is in danger.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 55
Aren orders every able fighter into boats, and they push off toward Eranahl. When Jor wonders aloud if it might be a trap to draw them out, Aren tells him they already fell for it. Silas deliberately left just enough soldiers at the bridge to make them commit everything to retaking it, and now he’s going after Eranahl with their backs turned.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 56
Lara runs along the bridge toward Snake Island, where the boats were left, hoping they’re still there. With no safe way down through the island, jumping into the water is her only option. Lara marks her spot and leaps into the darkness. She surfaces, swims to the sandbar, and wades through the shallows until she finds a boat. She climbs in and heads for Eranahl.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 57
Aren arrives at Eranahl to find it surrounded by more than a hundred ships, the shipbreakers destroyed, and Maridrinians scaling the cliffs. He orders his soldiers to harass the fleet from the rear while his boat makes for the cave entrance. They get inside, but the mast catches on the portcullis, forcing them to swim under it. Lia takes an arrow to the arm and is sent back.
Inside, Ahnna holds the line with almost no arrows left. The last shipbreaker falls. Then, a storm wind moves through the cavern, and Aren recognizes it. The tempests are coming. He just needs to hold on long enough. He sends Ahnna to defend the cliffs, orders Taryn to get the breaker running again, and holds the gate with two boats to keep the enemy back.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 58
Lara arrives to find Eranahl overrun. Ships ring the island, soldiers cover the slopes, the shipbreakers are gone, and longboats row into the cave. She takes the last of her stimulant, sails straight into the chaos, and jumps for the cliff face at the last second as her boat smashes apart below her.
Climbing upward, Lara hears Maridrinian soldiers above. A rumble follows, and she realizes what the Ithicanians are about to do. She scrambles under a small overhang and presses flat against the rock as a rockslide tears down the cliff, crushing the soldiers and boats below. She tries to keep climbing, but a handhold breaks loose and she falls.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 59
Aren and his soldiers are out of arrows, fighting hand to hand through the portcullis bars while badly outnumbered. A wave flings his boat back, and in the gap, Aren sees two Maridrinian soldiers loop a thick chain through the bars and pass the ends to the boats packed in the tunnel. He gets back to the bars and tries to pull the chain free, but it’s no use. The longboats pull back, and the chain goes rigid.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 60
Ahnna pulls Lara up from the cliff but makes it clear she isn’t welcome. Before the tension resolves, a screech of metal sends them racing around the island, where they find a ship using ropes to haul the portcullis free from the cavern. Lara learns Aren is down there. If the gate comes loose, longboats packed with soldiers will flood in and overrun him. Taryn works on a damaged shipbreaker nearby but needs more time than they have.
The Amaridian ships flee ahead of the storm, but the Maridrinians hold even as sharks drag their men under. Lara wonders what could make them stay, and when she borrows a spyglass, she finds her answer. Her father is on the ship pulling the portcullis. He’s what keeps the fleet from running. She tells Ahnna she needs to get on that ship.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 61
Ahnna fires a bolt into the ship, and Lara slides down the rope on a hook. The line is cut before she reaches the deck, and she drops hard.
Lara tries to convince her father to retreat, warning him that the storm will destroy the fleet and the bridge will never be his. He refuses and orders her killed. She challenges him to a duel, and the soldiers watching leave him no choice but to accept.
Badly outmatched, Lara bleeds heavily on the rocking deck. The portcullis comes loose during the fight, and her father calls the attack, but his soldiers hesitate against the storm. Lara fakes a stumble and draws her father in. She drives her knife into his chest, and he dies.
The fleet retreats. The cadre led by Lara’s father advances, and she throws herself overboard. Sharks circle but don’t strike, and she clings to floating debris, forcing herself to swim toward the cavern. A wave suddenly hurls her into the wreckage of the portcullis.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 62
The Maridrinians retreat, but the portcullis, dragged forward by the ship, jams in the tunnel and traps dozens of enemy soldiers on Aren’s side. Aren offers surrender, they accept, and he orders them bound. He takes the surrender of soldiers on the island the same way.
Lia’s boat fights through to Aren. She tells him to open the portcullis, and when he says it’s impossible, she tells him Lara is in the water. Lara challenged her father to a duel, killed him, and broke the fleet. Aren screams for tools to cut the portcullis. Before they reach the gate, the sea surges into the cave and slams Lara against the twisted steel.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 63
Aren pulls Lara up and holds her against the portcullis as waves surge, trying to tear her away. She tells him to let her go, apologizes for everything she did to Ithicana, and begs him not to sacrifice its future for her. He tells Lara he loves her and has never stopped, then tries to force the portcullis back before accepting it won’t move. He makes her promise to hold on, then dives.
Moments later, Aren surfaces with a way through. There’s a gap at the bottom, too small for him but wide enough for Lara’s shoulders. He pulls her under and guides her through, but her belt snags on the bars. She tries to reach the buckle, but her body is pressed flat against the rock, and there’s no space. She has no air left.
Then, Lara inhales.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 64
Aren finds Lara’s belt snagged on the steel, cuts it in the dark, and pulls her through. He breaks the surface and fights the current dragging him back toward the portcullis until arms haul them both into the boat.
Under the torchlight, Aren sees Lara’s eyes open but unseeing. Jor tells him she’s gone and tries twice to pull him back, but Aren shoves him off and keeps going. He carries Lara up the harbor steps at a run, lays her on the landing, and works on her chest with shaking arms, screaming at her to fight.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 65
It takes everything Lara has, but she claws her way back through the darkness toward the sound of Aren’s voice. Her eyes open.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 66
After three days, Lara wakes in the room she and Aren once shared. The war is over. The fleets fled ahead of the storm, and with her father dead, the Maridrinians have largely surrendered. Aren plans to release the prisoners, trusting Keris to be a different kind of ruler than his father.
Lara tells Aren she’ll leave as soon as she can walk. He tells her he wants her to stay, then explains the Ithicanan tradition for trying traitors. The accused is suspended in the sea, the waters are chummed, and the sharks always feed, until Lara. Ahnna, Taryn, and Aster watched her swim, bleeding through hundreds of sharks untouched. No one calls her the traitor queen anymore.
Finally, Lara agrees to stay. When Ahnna comes to say the people are assembled, Aren tells Lara to rest. Lara rises anyway, cites her marriage vows as her reason, and walks out beside him.
The Traitor Queen Bonus Chapter: Sarhina
Sarhina lives in a remote mountain village with her husband Ensel, her sister Bronwyn, and her newborn daughter Oriana when two assassins come for them in the night. Sarhina kills them both. Her sister Athena arrives shortly with news that their father is dead at Lara’s hand and that Ithicana won.
Bronwyn leaves for Vencia to find Athena and check on Lara. Ensel tells Sarhina their life in the mountains is no longer enough for her and that he wants to fight at her side. Together, the family sets out for Vencia.
At a coastal inn, a spy tells Sarhina that Lara was confirmed as queen but has since fallen gravely ill, then hands her a letter. After reading it, Sarhina tells Ensel they need to keep moving. Whatever Keris is planning threatens to upend everything.
