The Traitor Queen Chapter 16
Aren finds Keris in the courtyard, where Keris draws his attention to an angry crowd beyond the palace walls. Aren realizes the Maridrinian people have turned against the bridge. Silas has given them nothing except the burden of defending it. Trade has collapsed, and the coffers are empty. The people who once celebrated Aren now resent what his capture has cost them.
Keris wants Aren to arrange Zarrah’s escape, since she has promised to supply Eranahl with enough food to outlast Silas’s siege. Because Serin keeps Keris under close watch, he can’t reach the Ithicanians directly. The harem won’t help free a Valcottan, but they will help free Aren. Keris proposes that Aren use the harem to arrange his own escape and bring Zarrah out with him.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 17
Aren has spent days deliberately triggering the palace defenses and testing every possible route to map out exactly what he faces. Every attempt leaves him battered, and the conclusion is always the same: escape is impossible under his guard’s watch.
During a walk through a covered walkway, Aren hurls himself and a guard over the railing, cushions his fall with the guard’s body, and races toward an open sewer grate in the garden before soldiers swarm him.
Silas appears, threatens to skin Lara alive in front of Aren, and departs with his wives. Aren looks up at the tower, and something shifts. He’s been thinking like Silas, searching for weaknesses the way an enemy would. What he needs is to think like an Ithicanian.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 18
Lara and Bronwyn wait at a confectioner’s shop, passing the time sampling sweets while Lara’s nerves build. Coralyn arrives, dismisses her escort at the door, and steps up to the counter beside them. As the confectioner turns away to fetch an order form, Coralyn slips a piece of paper into Lara’s hand and murmurs that Aren has come through. It’s time to move.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 19
Lara and her sisters enter the dining room disguised as harem wives and perform a dance for Silas. When the dance ends, Lara leaps onto the table and reveals herself. Her sisters cut down the guards, and the room erupts in fighting.
Amid the chaos, Coralyn unlocks Aren’s chains. As the main doors begin to splinter, she hurls a smoke bomb, and Aren blasts through the window bars with hidden explosives. He tosses chemical bottles into the garden fountains below, adding to the mist from the harem’s planted jars, and the group climbs the palace wall under its cover.
In the stairwell, the group runs into Keris, who pulls Zarrah aside to slip her out separately while Aren’s group draws pursuit. Zarrah promises supplies for Ithicana if she survives, and Aren punches Keris to make it look like a struggle before racing on.
At the top, the group discovers a crossbow and cable hidden inside a framed artwork. Sisters who split off earlier have seized the exterior guard tower and flash a signal. Ithicanian explosions in the city throw soldiers into confusion below. Aren threads the bolt through the narrow guard tower window to anchor the zip line. Lara goes first and clears the wall unseen. Aren follows.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 20
Aren reaches the exterior guard tower while Lara helps her sisters cross one by one. As they wait, he tells her coldly that rescuing him changes nothing and he wants no part of her once they’re clear.
The mist begins to thin as a storm rolls in. Bronwyn is last on the line, and as she passes over the inner wall, guards spot her and raise the alarm. Lara calls for the gate to be blown earlier than scheduled. The explosion hits just as Bronwyn crosses overhead.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 21
The group hides in the stables while soldiers ride out chasing decoys, then takes the remaining horses and slips through the damaged gate. They head toward the eastern gate, where an explosion draws soldiers as a diversion, then double back west. When Lara’s horse takes an arrow and collapses, she dismounts, picks off pursuers from a rooftop, and leaps onto Bronwyn’s horse.
At the west gate, Aren tries to bluff their way through, but the guard holds firm on the password. Lara drives a knife into his throat, and her sisters cut down the rest. They force the portcullis open and escape to the cliffs.
Aren refuses to go farther with Lara and insists on returning to Ithicana alone. She urges him to trust every Ithicanian behind the plan, and he relents.
Halfway up the cliff face, Bronwyn takes an arrow to the shoulder and begins to slide. Aren climbs back down and carries her up while Lara and Cresta cover them. They reach the top, and Lara falls back to buy the others time to reach the horses.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 22
Lara takes down the pursuing soldiers, mounts the remaining horse, and draws a second group of riders toward a small coastal town. At the docks, she shouts Aren’s name, cuts the mooring lines to scatter the fishing boats, and drops into the water while soldiers take the bait and call in the navy to search the sea.
Once the soldiers move off, Lara crawls out along the rocky beach, skirts the town, and follows a trail of glowing algae markers upstream to a cave in the hills. The horses are tethered outside, and bloodstains mark the rock, but when she calls out and steps inside, the group is still there.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 23
Aren and Cresta reach the cave with the injured Bronwyn, where Nana and Sarhina wait. Lara arrives soon after, drenched and battered. Nana removes the arrow while Lara assists.
Outside, Aren calls Lara a traitor, and Sarhina presses a knife to his throat. She tells him they joined the rescue because they love Lara and rejects the idea that Lara chose betrayal, arguing that what Silas and Serin did was closer to poisoning than to persuasion.
When Lara comes out, she lays out the next steps for Aren. Ahnna has gone to Harendell to invoke the Fifteen-Year Treaty and bring them in as allies for retaking Northwatch. Securing Southwatch requires a second ally, which means Aren and Lara must ride south to repair Ithicana’s relationship with the empress of Valcotta.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 24
Lara says goodbye to her sisters, then she and Aren ride south toward Valcotta. Along the way, Aren tells her that Silas killed her mother after she tried to go after Lara and bring her back.
Later, Aren confronts Lara about the letter that gave away Ithicana’s defenses. She explains that she tried to destroy all the stationery the night she chose him, but one page slipped past her. He barely hears it. What’s driving his anger isn’t really Lara at all but himself, for trusting her and bringing her to Ithicana in the first place.
Before the argument can go further, they pick up the sound of dogs and hooves closing in. Soldiers are converging from multiple directions, cutting off any route to the coast. With nowhere else to go, Lara leads Aren east into the Red Desert.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 25
After days in the desert with soldiers on the horizon, the horses finally collapse, and Lara and Aren continue on foot. Hours of walking through punishing heat bring them to the crest of a massive dune, where a sandstorm looms ahead and eight soldiers on camels close in fast from behind.
Fighting is out of the question. Lara and Aren are out of arrows, barely able to lift their weapons, and nearly out of water. Lara sees the storm as their only chance and runs straight toward it.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 26
The storm overtakes Lara and Aren before they reach the oasis, and Aren collapses. Lara drags him into a building within a walled compound she recognizes and realizes he’s dangerously dehydrated. She braves the storm alone to reach a nearby spring, retrieves water, and gets enough into him for him to regain consciousness. Once he’s stable, she tells him they’re at the place where everything began.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 27
Aren wakes to find himself and Lara huddled together and realizes she saved his life by dragging him to shelter and braving the storm alone to retrieve water. When the storm passes, he explores the compound and discovers it filled with bodies, the remains of everyone her father killed to protect his secrets.
Lara wakes partially blind from the storm, and Aren leads her to the kitchen and flushes her eyes with filtered water. As he tends to her, she explains that she took Marylyn’s place after learning their father planned to kill all his daughters once Marylyn was officially chosen. Aren then burns the letter Marylyn gave him.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 28
With no food and a long journey south to Valcotta ahead, Lara proposes ambushing a merchant caravan for supplies, arguing that leaving witnesses would expose them to her father’s soldiers. Aren refuses to kill innocent people, and the argument remains unresolved. They’re interrupted by the sound of hooves, hide, and prepare to attack, but Aren runs around the corner and stops short, telling Lara to see for herself.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 29
A stray camel wanders into the compound with a dead soldier tangled in the saddle. Aren examines the body and concludes the man was one of their pursuers, killed in the storm. The saddlebags hold enough dried food and water to sustain them for several days, and Lara checks the camel and finds it sound. They agree to rest and set out that night.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 30
Lara explores her old room and retrieves a box of childhood keepsakes, including a sapphire necklace her mother gave her before she died, and breaks down over it.
Aren finds Lara, and they talk. He tells her that during his captivity, Serin used the threat of capturing her against him. Lara shares that a girl named Alina vanished after repeatedly defying Serin.
When Lara asks Aren about her brother, he describes Keris as intelligent but difficult to read. Lara warns him not to trust Keris. At sunset, they head out.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 31
A week into crossing the Red Desert, Lara and Aren are running low on food, and Aren is visibly weakened from captivity. Lara convinces him to ride their camel and runs ahead to the oasis town of Jerin. There, she steals a skewer of meat and uses it to lure two dogs into a group of tethered camels, sending the animals stampeding through town and sparking a brawl between Maridrinian and Valcottan merchants.
In the chaos, Lara fills her waterskins at the lake and grabs food from overturned market stalls. Just as she’s about to slip away, someone seizes her from behind and calls her a thief.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 32
Aren wakes tied to the saddle, with Lara nowhere in sight, and realizes she has gone ahead to the oasis alone. He tries to turn the camel back, but Jack refuses, straining toward the water. Aren pulls the animal to a stop and waits. As the sun climbs higher with no sign of Lara’s return, he concludes something has gone wrong.
