The Traitor Queen Chapter 33
Lara is locked in a pillory in the market, stripped and left to bake in the sun as punishment for the theft. Suddenly, Aren rides in posing as a ruined merchant, and a man named Timin offers him safe passage to Valcotta in exchange for use of his camel. Aren accepts and walks away without looking at Lara, leaving her to fear he has abandoned her.
Aren spends the day drinking with the merchants, stops at the pillory once to tell Lara he has her poison vial, then departs with the caravan at sundown. Lara realizes her captor has drunkenly knocked against the pillory and loosened it from the ground, and she sees her chance to escape.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 34
Aren leaves with Timin’s caravan while secretly staying sober. After about an hour, Timin pulls a knife and reveals he intends to rob and kill him. Aren draws his sword and cuts down Timin and his two partners, ties up the boy who had been minding the camels, and heads back to the oasis to free Lara.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 35
Lara spends hours rocking the pillory to loosen it. When her captor and two other men suddenly collapse in the market, the chaos gives her the opening she needs to tip the frame over and pull herself free.
Aren appears and guides Lara into the lake to hide from the searchers. While they wait in the water, he kisses her and tells her he’ll come for her no matter where she is, though Lara knows she won’t be staying with him. Once the search moves away from the shore, they climb out and run until Lara loses consciousness.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 36
Aren carries Lara to the camels and heads south into Valcotta. She’s severely ill for days but recovers once they clear the desert. They make camp and fall into easy banter, though Aren privately wrestles with his feelings, knowing a future together is impossible. Lara tells him plainly that she’ll travel with him as far as Pyrinat, then she’ll go. She loves him, but it has to end, and they both know it.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 37
Aren and Lara travel to Pyrinat by riverboat, arriving nearly a month behind schedule. Despite her resolve to end things, Lara struggles with her feelings for him throughout the journey.
At the Nastryan Hotel, whose owner is an Ithicanian spy, Lara asks the clerk about messages and is told there are none, but he directs them to someone already waiting in the coffeehouse.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 38
Aren reunites with Jor in a private room at the coffeehouse. Jor tells him that Eranahl is still holding but ringed by Amaridian ships, and morale is so low that most people plan to leave for Harendell once storm season arrives. Harendell’s king has agreed to support Ithicana only if Valcotta commits as well, and Ahnna has already promised to marry the Harendellian crown prince to secure the deal. Everything now rests on Aren persuading the empress within the next few days.
Lara learns her sisters came through safely, and Aren shaves before preparing to meet the empress.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 39
Aren announces himself at the palace gates, and Zarrah, who is present in Pyrinat, confirms Lara and Aren’s identities and leads them to the empress.
The empress confronts Aren over his decision to side with Maridrina against Valcotta, and Aren argues that the arrangement had actually benefited Valcotta and that she had left Ithicana with no good options. Neither concedes. The empress then orders Lara to wait outside while she speaks with Aren alone. Lara refuses, and the empress instructs her soldier to subdue her.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 40
In a private meeting, Aren asks the empress for Valcotta’s help in retaking Southwatch and offers to reveal its vulnerabilities as part of an alliance. The empress suggests killing Lara as the price of Valcotta’s support. Aren refuses, and the two argue without resolution. He announces he’s sailing to Ithicana that night and walks out.
Downstairs, Aren finds Lara playing a board game with the soldier sent to subdue her and tells her they need to go.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 41
The empress agreed to help only if Lara was killed, a condition Aren flatly refused. Back at the hotel, Lara pressed him to accept, insisting Ithicana was lost without Valcotta’s navy and that her life wasn’t worth more than his kingdom.
When Aren kept refusing, Lara tried to walk out and handle it herself. She hauled the door open and found Zarrah already standing there. Zarrah stepped inside and warned them that soldiers were coming to put them on a ship out of the city. Aren, unsurprised, told Lara he had a different plan all along. He intended to negotiate an alliance with Zarrah directly.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 42
Zarrah lays out the empress’s plan: wait for Maridrina to bleed itself dry holding the bridge, then invade and conquer it entirely, with Ithicana’s destruction treated as a price worth paying.
Aren reveals he suspects Zarrah and Keris have been working together to end the war between their nations, and Zarrah confirms it. Lara points out that tipping Keris off would spark a far larger war between Maridrina and Valcotta.
Zarrah then proposes a way through. She’ll sail back to Nerastis with them, crew the captured Maridrinian ships with her own soldiers, and retake Southwatch while leaving no living witnesses to Valcotta’s involvement. She admits she had the chance to warn Ithicana before Southwatch fell and did not. She isn’t asking for forgiveness, only the chance to fight until it’s made right. The alliance is struck, and they sail for Nerastis that night.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 43
When Lara, Aren, and Jor board the ship, Zarrah announces publicly that the king and queen of Ithicana are being transported to Nerastis. Lara realizes at once that the declaration is deliberate, meant to mislead the Maridrinian spies in the city and keep the true plan hidden.
Later, Lara slips out to the deck after getting seasick, and Aren follows with ginger candies. He tells her that sitting with what Keris said convinced him that both Keris and Zarrah want peace, which is what led him to trust Zarrah would help. Lara tells him she plans to part ways with him and Jor when they reach Nerastis in three days. He doesn’t argue. He pulls her close, tells her he forgives her, then stops himself before saying more and goes back inside.
Alone, Lara finishes the thought Aren left unspoken.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 44
The group rows ashore at Nerastis. Zarrah heads back to the city before sailing north to anchor her fleet and wait for the signal to move on Southwatch. Jor breaks off to find a boat.
Left alone on the beach with Aren, Lara admits she plans to find and kill her father. Before they can settle it, Aren spots the glint of a weapon and they run. Keris appears on horseback, warns them to flee, then wheels around and orders his soldiers to chase the Valcottan raiders.
Lara and Aren fight their way toward the water as Maridrinian reinforcements pour onto the beach. When Lara is badly outnumbered, Aren lets go of the boat and goes back to fight beside her.
Zarrah’s longboats hit the shore in time, her soldiers driving the Maridrinians back. In the chaos, Lara and Aren push the fishing boat into deeper water. Lara lets go and turns toward shore, but Aren hauls her back in and tells her it’s time to go home.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 45
Lara, Aren, and Jor reach a hidden lagoon where the surviving Ithicanian soldiers are camped, gaunt and worn but still armed. Aren and Lara keep their hoods up at first, but when hers slips down, every weapon goes up.
Aster, the garrison commander, has distrusted Lara from the start and demands her death. Aren steps between them, tells his soldiers Lara freed him from captivity, then lays out the full plan. Valcotta and Harendell will coordinate with Ithicana to retake the bridge. The soldiers waver but listen.
When Aster asks how Lara fits in, she speaks for herself. She admits the deception, the manipulation, the betrayal, and says she isn’t asking forgiveness, only the chance to fight. The soldiers agree, but only if she leaves when it’s over.
To get Lara out alive, Aren tells the Ithicanians she’s no longer his wife or queen and accepts the terms. Aster tosses him a horn. Aren raises it and calls Ithicana to war.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 46
Over three days, surviving Ithicanian soldiers come one by one to tell Lara what they lost in the invasion. Aren stays buried in planning and barely looks at her, and his words to Aster that she’s no longer his wife or queen linger in her mind.
When the time comes, the group sets out by boat through heavy mist toward Gamire Island, where Maridrinian soldiers are holding Ithicanian prisoners. Lia, who joined them recently, is meant to dive beneath a pier, swim up through a hidden opening, and drop a rope for the others. A patrol on the bridge forces the group to pull back.
With the timeline at risk, Aren points to one pier that will still get them there in time. Jor refuses before Aren finishes speaking. Lara volunteers instead. She sprints across Snake Island with a rope as hundreds of snakes converge on her. The crews throw fish and fire arrows to draw them off, but the snakes keep closing in.
Something strikes the back of Lara’s leg just as she reaches the pier. She doesn’t stop. She climbs. When she hauls herself over the top, she hears voices that don’t belong to the Ithicanian prisoners below.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 47
From the water below, Aren watches Lara reach the top just as a Maridrinian patrol stops directly above. Rather than wait, she climbs onto the bridge and kills them. One soldier falls to the beach, another into the water. Lia finishes the one in the water before he can make noise.
Then the rope drops. Aren climbs up first and finds Lara among the dead with nothing worse than a split lip. He checks her leg. The snake hit hard enough to leave a mark but never broke the skin.
The team moves toward Gamire, killing one more patrol on the way. Aren releases poisonous smoke into the bridge interior and traps soldiers behind a jammed hatch.
On Gamire, a decoy attack on the far side draws the bulk of the Maridrinian forces away from the shipbreakers. Lara, Aren, and Jor kill the four left on guard. Jor ties ropes to the shipbreaker and throws them down the cliff. The Ithicanian boats move in, and within minutes, Aren is surrounded by his own soldiers. He leads them across the island to take Gamire.
The Traitor Queen Chapter 48
During the journey across Gamire, Lara and Aren spot Taryn, Aren’s cousin, whom they believed dead, bound at a shipbreaker with her wrists tied. When a soldier raises his sword to kill Taryn for refusing to cooperate, Lara ignores Aren’s signal to hold and throws a knife into the soldier’s arm. Aren calls the attack, and the fight erupts.
Lara puts herself between the soldiers and Taryn, buying her time to cut her wrists free. When a wounded soldier makes a last move at Taryn, Lara takes the hit. Taryn kills him, then raises her sword at Lara. She holds it there for a moment, then lowers it, says killing her won’t change anything, and runs into the battle.
