House of Sky and Breath Chapter 27
Bryce redirects Hunt from their planned gym session to the Meat Market, where she believes Emile might be hiding. She has already recruited Fury and Juniper to help, and the four split up to search different sections.
After thirty minutes, no one finds anything. Bryce takes this as useful information. If Emile isn’t at the Meat Market, the Bone Quarter becomes a stronger lead and gives them more grounds to approach the Under‑King directly. As they leave, Hunt pulls Fury aside and learns that Juniper’s brother was once enslaved by the Viper Queen, became addicted to her venom, and died in one of her fights. His body was dumped on the family’s doorstep afterward. Fury explains that Juniper came tonight purely for Bryce.
While Bryce and Hunt are in the apartment gym, Hunt uses his shadow abilities to sneak up on her. He cuts the security cameras, and they become intimate. In the moment, Bryce tells him she loves him, and he says it back.
Later that night in bed, Bryce and Hunt confirm they both meant it. Hunt explains that he realized his feelings during his imprisonment, when Sandriel forced him to watch a slideshow of photos of himself and Bryce. They discuss what to call each other and settle on “mate,” though Bryce notes that for the Fae, the word carries serious, permanent weight. Hunt says he’s comfortable with that, and they agree on the label.

Ruhn slips into contact with Agent Daybright while unconscious on Bryce’s couch, which suggests the crystal they used before was only needed to establish the initial connection.
Daybright gets straight to the point: a supply train leaves the Eternal City in three days, headed north along the Spine, carrying a mech‑suit prototype along with a massive shipment of brimstone missiles, guns, and ammunition. She tells Ruhn that Ophion should destroy all of it rather than try to take anything, and warns that roughly a hundred wolves and a small aerial escort of angel scouts will guard the train.
When Ruhn tries to fish for information about Pippa and Sofie, Daybright shuts both inquiries down and ends the meeting.
The next morning, Ruhn briefs everyone. Hunt suspects a trap or a double agent feeding them false intel, while Bryce argues the mission belongs to Ophion and has nothing to do with them. Cormac bypasses the debate and declares he’s reporting to Command regardless.
Before Cormac and Ruhn head out, Ruhn asks Ithan to join them, and Ithan agrees after a brief hesitation. Bryce and Hunt remain behind to prepare for their trip to the Bone Quarter to confront the Under‑King about the Reaper attack and search for any trace of Emile.

Bryce and Hunt head to the Bone Quarter by boat after dropping their Death Mark coins into the river. Baxian catches them at the dock before they leave but doesn’t stop them or report it, at least not right away.
Once on the island, Bryce strikes the Starsword against one of the obelisks to draw the Under‑King out. She and Hunt confront him about the Reaper attack on her, and the Under‑King denies sending them, even swearing on Cthona’s name. He claims the Reapers defected to Hel on their own, which puts Apollion back in the frame.
Bryce asks if Emile and Sofie could be hiding there, but the Under‑King makes it clear that nothing living enters the island without his knowledge. The Bone Quarter is officially ruled out as a hiding place.
When Bryce asks about Danika and the Pack of Devils, the Under‑King admits the peaceful afterlife he once showed her was a fabrication. The dead simply wait on the island until the living stop thinking about them, then they’re funneled through the Dead Gate as energy. He takes a cut for himself along the way.
The Under‑King shares this with Bryce and Hunt only because he never planned to let them leave. He wants to consume Bryce’s light.

Ruhn, Ithan, and Cormac arrive in Crescent City for a covert information drop. Ruhn uses his shadow magic to keep them concealed while Cormac meets with a disguised agent nearby. The city feels tenser than usual because the Hind has arrived with her dreadwolves, the Asteri’s most feared soldiers. After the drop, the agent warns them that the Asteri suspect Emile is somewhere in the city, which likely explains the dreadwolves’ presence.
Before Ruhn, Ithan, and Cormac can leave, Mordoc—one of those wolves—wanders into the alley and tracks them by scent. Ithan reveals that Mordoc is Danika’s estranged father and a bloodhound, making him nearly impossible to hide from. Since Cormac can only teleport one person at a time, he takes Ithan first. When he returns, his sudden appearance distracts Mordoc just long enough for Ruhn to drop his shadows and bolt for the street, where Cormac grabs him and teleports them both out.
Meanwhile, Bryce and Hunt face their own nightmare when the Under‑King unleashes a massive demon hound on them. Hunt fights it off with lightning while Bryce runs, but the hound splits into three creatures and the mist separates Bryce from Hunt. Bryce crashes into a crystal archway, loses the Starsword, and ends up pinned to the ground with one of the hounds bearing down on her.

Cormac drops Ruhn and Ithan off at a bar in FiRo to give them a documented alibi after their encounter with Mordoc. While they’re there, Ruhn invites Ithan to move in with him and his housemates. Ithan doesn’t refuse, only saying he’ll think about it. Before the conversation can go further, the Hind and the Harpy walk in and sit down, and the mood shifts sharply.
Across the city, Hunt battles two demons that keep merging into a single massive creature. He wraps his lightning around it, but the creature breaks free and tears off into the mist toward Bryce.
Bryce is in serious trouble near the Dead Gate. Reapers surround her and chant something that makes the Gate glow and build energy, seemingly to drain her power, while three demon hounds close in. She throws herself to the ground, slides under the hounds as they leap, and grabs the Starsword. One catches her back on the way over. The wound is bad enough that she can barely stand, but she forces herself to her feet and lifts the blade.
Hunt touches down beside Bryce, his lightning burning hotter and bluer than she’s ever seen. He fires at the hounds, but Bryce throws herself into the path of the strike with the sword held out, betting on an idea she hasn’t fully worked out yet. The lightning connects with the blade, and everything goes white.

Bryce throws herself in front of Hunt’s lightning, absorbing it into herself and the Starsword, then tears into the Shepherd and its hounds. She kills one beast, but another’s tail catches Hunt and slams him into the Dead Gate.
While trying to get back on his feet, Hunt notices the Gate pulling firstlight in and out and wonders if he can drain it the same way the Renast siblings channel energy. He presses his hand to the brass plaque and pulls power directly from the Gate, then sends it into Bryce. She drives it through the Starsword, and together they destroy the Shepherd.
Meanwhile, Tharion meets with the River Queen and updates her on two more murdered Vanir, pointing to Pippa as the likely killer. The River Queen orders him to find Emile and ensure Ophion Command never learns they have him.
After destroying the Shepherd, Bryce and Hunt run for the river, where Tharion waits on a wave skimmer. Sobeks attack on the way out, but Tharion holds them off, and the three make it back to Bryce’s apartment.
Once they’re safe, Bryce and Hunt confirm Emile and Sofie were never in the Bone Quarter. Bryce calls Ruhn and Ithan, but neither answers, and the silence rattles her. Hunt then sees on his phone that Ephraim and the Hind have arrived in Lunathion.

With a deck of cards in hand, the Hind steers Ruhn and Ithan into a poker game, using it to probe Ruhn about his whereabouts and make clear she’s been watching him. The Harpy tries to put her hands on Ithan, and he shuts her down fast.
The Hind then shifts her attention to Ithan and starts reading out his buried feelings for Bryce with cold precision until he cracks and tells her to shut up. She wins the poker hand, delivers a parting line telling Ruhn to pass her love to Cormac, and walks out. That final comment makes it obvious she knows far more than she has shown.
Back at the apartment, Ruhn and Ithan regroup with Bryce, Hunt, and Tharion. Hunt reports that Emile and Sofie are not in the Bone Quarter but that something significant came out of the search.
Bryce, still rattled from what she endured, hugs Ruhn before anyone can get into details. Hunt then gets pulled away to the Comitium because Ephraim has arrived in the city. He and Bryce share a brief moment before he leaves, and the rest of the group settles in to compare notes.

Hunt joins Celestina in her private study before her formal meeting with Ephraim. The meeting turns stiff immediately. When Ephraim leans in to kiss Celestina’s cheek, she turns at the wrong moment and the greeting lands awkwardly on the side of her head. Isaiah steps in, officially welcomes Ephraim and his triarii, and the gathering settles into an uneasy reception.
Across the city, Bryce finishes telling Ruhn, Ithan, and Tharion what she uncovered in the Bone Quarter. The truth about where souls actually go after death shakes everyone.
Before the group can process it, Sabine bursts in, seizes Bryce by the throat, and hurls her across the room. Sabine is furious that Bryce has been sheltering the exiled Ithan and accuses her of meddling in wolf affairs.
Ruhn draws his gun, and Tharion helps Bryce to her feet. Ithan faces Sabine, and she taunts him by invoking his dead brother. Tharion offers to stand witness if she wants to fight. Ruhn quietly notes that Ithan wouldn’t survive it. Bryce texts Hunt to warn him that Sabine is there.
Back at the reception, Hunt reads the message, and Isaiah urges him to go, covering for him by pulling Baxian into a conversation. Hunt slips out through the veranda. Celestina sees him leave, and her expression makes clear she isn’t pleased.

Sabine shows up at Bryce’s apartment looking for a fight with Ithan. Ithan catches her off guard by dropping a bombshell she clearly didn’t expect him to know. He reveals that Mordoc, the Hind’s captain, is Danika’s biological father. Bryce adds pressure by suggesting she could throw her weight behind Ithan as a rival for Sabine’s leadership over the wolves.
The combination rattles Sabine just enough to shift the power in the room. Hunt arrives with a gun trained on her, and Baxian walks in behind him. Baxian’s presence visibly unnerves Sabine. She backs down and leaves.
Once things settle, Bryce confronts Ithan about Mordoc, and Ithan confirms it. He explains that Danika chose to keep it hidden and that he had no right to tell anyone while she was alive. Ithan then tells Ruhn he’s accepting the offer to move in with him and heads out.
Baxian stays behind long enough to share something deeply unsettling about Mordoc. After visiting the Den, Mordoc came back in such a rage that he killed and partially ate a human couple on the street. The incident is a grim reminder of how dangerous he is. Baxian then leaves as well.
That night, Bryce and Hunt decompress in bed, talking through everything that happened. Hunt tells her that wherever she ends up after this life, that’s where he wants to be.

Ruhn gets home and tells Flynn and Declan that Ithan will be staying with them. Neither of them makes a big deal out of it.
That night, Ruhn connects with Day in their shared dream space and reports that the intel drop went through, though they nearly got caught by Mordoc, the Hind, and the Harpy. Day is visibly unsettled hearing those names and makes clear how lethal they are.
The conversation turns personal as Ruhn and Day admit to having abusive families and to feeling the weight of their work. Ruhn starts to feel something real between them. Before she disappears, Day tells him the mech‑suit prototype is the only thing worth targeting on the Spine shipment and persuades him to let go of bigger ambitions, noting that Ophion has taken serious losses and lacks the capacity for a larger operation.
The next morning, Ithan asks Tharion to take him across the river to check on his brother, whose soul may have been consumed by the Dead Gate. Tharion refuses because the river beasts make it too dangerous and suggests the mystics might help them both, since he also needs to track down Emile. He tells Ithan to bring gold marks and adds that Bryce is coming too, whether Ithan likes it or not.

Bryce and Juniper are in ballet class when Juniper learns that Korinne Lescau, a far less experienced dancer, has just been promoted to principal at the CCB. Juniper has been passed over, and the company is clearly punishing her for publicly criticizing its leadership. After class, Bryce asks their instructor Madame Kyrah to intervene, but Kyrah says she has no power to change anything. Bryce then calls the CCB director herself and uses her title as Princess to get past the receptionist.
Over at the Comitium, Hunt is pulled from a training session to see Celestina. The Archangel is cold and direct with him. She’s upset that he left her private celebration the night before without permission to help Bryce, and Ephraim took it as a slight. As punishment, Celestina orders Hunt to stay in the barracks for two weeks. Hunt accepts the order, though he privately knows he would make the same choice again.
On his way out, Hunt runs into the Hind. She asks casual but pointed questions about his friends Ruhn, Ithan, and Tharion, and makes it clear she finds it suspicious that such an unlikely group keeps turning up at Bryce’s apartment. Before she can dig deeper, Baxian intervenes and lets Hunt walk away. The exchange leaves Hunt shaken, aware that the Hind is closing in on the truth.

Bryce, Tharion, and Ithan visit a mystic’s shop in the Old Square, run by an elderly figure known only as the Astronomer. Bryce is reluctant but goes along. Inside, she notices fire sprites trapped in glass‑domed rings on the Astronomer’s hand and struggles to contain her anger.
The shop houses three mystics floating in tanks of cloudy water, deep in an unresponsive trance. Ithan pays the Astronomer and asks whether his brother Connor’s soul remains in the Bone Quarter or has passed through the Dead Gate.
The Astronomer says the question requires bloodsalt, a rare substance made from blood collected at both birth and death, so he adds it to the tanks. The floor beneath the room opens up to reveal seven descending levels of darkness, and the search begins. Bryce wants to leave, but Ithan persuades her to stay.
The mystics make contact with something deep in what appears to be Hel. The entity confirms that no wolf named Connor has ever set foot there. The session takes an unexpected turn when the mystic discloses their identities to the entity. It introduces itself as Thanatos, the Prince of the Ravine, and demands to see them. At that moment, the male mystic’s eyes open in his tank.
House of Sky and Breath Chapter 39
Thanatos recognizes Bryce and tells her she killed the Shepherd, a creature he had planted in the mortal world to spy on the dead. He then confirms that Connor remains in the Bone Quarter, though some unknown authority has ordered that the souls there be left undisturbed.
Tharion asks about Emile, and when that gets no response, he reveals that Emile is a thunderbird. Thanatos claims no knowledge of the boy, but the exchange destabilizes the connection. Thanatos seizes one of the mystics and begins feeding on the man’s soul. When the machines fail and the respirators shut down, Ithan jumps into the chamber and pulls all three mystics to safety before they drown.
The Astronomer is furious, and the mystics beg to return to their tanks rather than face the waking world. On the way out, Bryce notices the fire sprites trapped in the Astronomer’s rings again. She wants to act but has no real authority and cannot risk involving the law, not with Hunt’s position at stake.
Outside, Bryce and Tharion argue, and she tells him they’re finished working together. Ithan goes pale when he spots Mordoc watching them from the shadows.
