House of Flame and Shadow Chapters 85–102 Summary

This Sarah J. Maas House of Flame and Shadow chapter summary contains full spoilers.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 85

Bryce, Hunt, and their allies crowd into a van on the edge of the Eternal City to record a broadcast for the people of Midgard. Bryce introduces herself as heir to the Starborn Fae and daughter of Ember Quinlan and Randall Silago, and Hunt speaks openly about leading the Fallen against the Archangels and the Asteri centuries earlier.

Together, Bryce and Hunt accuse the Asteri of lying to Midgard for fifteen thousand years, including secretly siphoning magic from the people of Midgard through a parasite concealed in the water supply. Bryce also claims responsibility for killing Archangel Micah, and Declan rolls the footage to back up Bryce’s claim.

The group then falls back to a safe house near the Eternal City wall. Bryce is uneasy, worried the location might be compromised now that most of Ophion is gone, but Hunt reminds Bryce that Declan and Flynn are keeping watch outside. The two spend the night together before the battle ahead.

Afterward, Hunt tells Bryce he can feel something of Bryce settled inside him, and Bryce realizes Hunt’s lightning has taken root in her the same way. They fall asleep in each other’s arms, with Hunt promising to stay with Bryce no matter what the next day brings.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 86

Ithan returns to the Den to find it nearly deserted. Perry tells him most of the wolves, including Amelie, have scattered out of fear, though Perry stayed behind to watch over the Prime’s body. Ithan tells Perry he’s going to the Eternal City to stand against the Asteri.

Perry warns that the moment Ithan acts, the Asteri will retaliate against the pack. Ithan gives Perry three hours to get the word out so everyone can find somewhere safe to hide. He then goes to bury the Prime and tells Perry the Under-King is dead and that everything they believed about the Bone Quarter was false.

Meanwhile, Tharion finishes packing and picks up the antidote vials from Hypaxia, who tells him she’s staying behind to keep producing them. When Tharion goes to find Sathia, he discovers she’s already slipped away, leaving a note that says she couldn’t abandon Colin. He heads for the Eternal City alone.

In a safe house, Ruhn and Lidia are holed up waiting for dawn. Then Declan sends out Bryce and Hunt’s video around midnight. Lidia, meanwhile, is spiraling with guilt over her sons being taken, convinced it’s her fault. Ruhn steadies Lidia and reminds her that she needs to step back into the role of the Hind to get them through the palace gates. They sleep together, and afterward, Lidia lies awake, unable to stop thinking about what the morning will bring.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 87

The group waits in an unmarked van in the Eternal City while Declan monitors the fallout from the video the group released. He confirms that the Asteri are locked in an emergency meeting over the video, which gives the group the opening they need.

Away from the group, Ithan buries the Prime and heads out alone after seeing news of Bryce’s video on Perry’s phone. Tharion has already gone ahead to the Eternal City to deliver the antidote to Bryce and the others before everything kicks off.

Back in the van, Declan gets into the imperial military controls and signals that the group is ready. The group arms up and goes over the plan, which comes down to unleashing Hel and the Fallen as a distraction while Bryce and Hunt slip into the palace and destroy the firstlight core. Rescuing Lidia’s sons, taking out Pollux, and eliminating the Asteri are all part of the plan too.

Lidia pulls Flynn and Declan aside and makes them promise to get her boys out of the city regardless of what happens to the rest of the group. Then Bryce rallies everyone, and the group steps out of the van and into whatever comes next.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 88

The group splits up inside the palace. Bryce and Ruhn share a quiet moment before going their separate ways, with Bryce echoing back something tender Ruhn had once said to her. Before heading off with Lidia to search for her sons, Ruhn tells Lidia he loves her and doesn’t wait around for a response.

Bryce and Hunt reach the throne room, where Hunt takes back his Umbra Mortis suit from the wall. Bryce puts on the Mask, and through it she can see that the wings of the Fallen pinned around the room still hold trapped souls. She commands the trapped souls, and the wings break loose. The souls pour out of the palace and into the sky above the city.

Then Rigelus walks in. Bryce doesn’t flinch. She directs his attention to a nearby hill, where the wings have come down to rest, and uses the Mask to raise the souls gathered there. As she does, the armies of Hel come swarming over the hill. Declan sends out a citywide evacuation alert to get civilians moving.

Rigelus isn’t surprised. He tells Bryce and Hunt that he knew about the Northern Rift the whole time and has been ready for them. He gives a signal, and the Asterian Guard floods into the streets.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 89

Rigelus reveals that he sent three legions of the Asterian Guard through the Rift the previous night, banking on Hel being left undefended. Bryce teleports herself and Hunt out of the palace to the hills beyond the city.

Meanwhile, Ruhn and Lidia search the palace for her sons. After getting nowhere, they use one of the mystics to learn that Pollux has hidden the boys beneath the palace near the firstlight core. Ruhn warns Lidia that it’s probably a trap, but she refuses to slow down. Unable to stop her, Ruhn shoots Lidia in the thigh to keep her out of what he’s certain is a death trap and goes alone.

Elsewhere, Tharion, carrying a bag of antidotes, makes his way through the city’s underground waterways toward the Asteri’s palace.

Out in the hills, Bryce and Hunt regroup with Aidas, Isaiah, and Naomi for Phase Two. They wait until the Asterian Guard marches past the city walls before Declan remotely kills the mech-suits from the van. Bryce puts on the Mask and calls the souls of the Fallen into the powerless suits. The possessed machines turn against the Guard, and the souls without suits take over nearby intact corpses. Isaiah and Naomi then lead the undead force toward the city gates.

Then the Asteri step onto the battlefield, and two of Hel’s princes move out to face them.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 90

Hunt, Bryce, and Aidas teleport onto the battlefield outside the Eternal City, where the three Princes of Hel are squaring off against five Asteri. The Fallen, now piloting mech suit bodies, pour into the fight and quickly overwhelm the Asterian Guard.

Polaris breaks away from the main battle and goes straight for Bryce. Bryce teleports in front of her and drives both the Starsword and Truth-Teller into Polaris’s chest. The power of Theia’s star binds the blades together and tears open a void at the point where they cross, which begins pulling everything nearby into it, including Bryce.

Hunt fires his Helfire lightning into the nexus of the crossed blades, and where it meets Bryce’s starfire, the combined force causes Polaris to implode and vanish into the void entirely. The moment it’s over, Bryce and Hunt both feel the weight of what just happened. Doing that five more times, with five more Asteri, is going to be hard.

Ruhn calls over the comms and tells Bryce and Hunt to get to the hall with the firstlight core because Ruhn’s team is in trouble. Bryce and Hunt teleport there immediately.

Bryce and Hunt land in a corridor swarming with deathstalkers. Bryce is drained, her nose bleeding, and Hunt is calculating whether they can afford to fight their way through. Before it comes to that, a wall of water comes crashing down the corridor toward them.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 91

Hunt and Bryce are trapped in a flooding hallway when Tharion swims toward them, having caused the flood. He seals Hunt and Bryce in a pocket of air long enough for them to breathe, but the current has ripped away Tharion’s bag of antidotes. Bryce refuses to wait and pushes ahead toward the firstlight core, telling Tharion to find the bag and follow.

Ruhn, meanwhile, is caught by Pollux, who reveals that the lead about Lidia’s sons was a lie Rigelus planted to lure the group into a trap. Pollux marches Ruhn at gunpoint back to the stairs where Lidia was left wounded, only to find that Lidia is already gone.

Tharion had found Lidia there along with the satchel. Only two vials of antidote survived. Lidia takes one without hesitation, her wound seals instantly, and her power returns. The two hide as Pollux prowls the hall with Ruhn as a hostage until Pollux produces Lidia’s two captive teenage sons. Lidia steps out and faces him.

Elsewhere, Bryce is still processing that she killed Polaris, banishing the Asteri from Midgard with the twin blades fueled by Bryce’s starlight and Hunt’s Hellfire. Bryce and Hunt blast through the archive doors and reach the firstlight core room, where five of the seven power pipes are still nearly full. Rigelus is already there, waiting.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 92

Bryce and Hunt are locked in a fight against Rigelus inside the palace. Bryce pulls out the Starsword and Truth-Teller while Hunt throws lightning at him, but Rigelus deflects everything. They figure out that the real target is the firstlight core buried beneath the crystal floor, and Hunt thinks his Helfire lightning might be able to warp and break through it. Bryce teleports them right in front of Rigelus to distract him long enough for Hunt to fire at the crystal. It works. The floor cracks and melts, and a tunnel leading down to the core starts to open.

On the streets outside, Ithan is running hard toward the palace through a city in total chaos. A brimstone missile goes off near him and sends him crashing into a building. When he recovers, he finds that the antidote vials intended for Bryce and Hunt have shattered in his pack. He gets up anyway, noticing crowds of ordinary humans flooding toward the battle, moved by something Bryce had said. He keeps going, now armed with nothing but the Godslayer Rifle.

Inside the palace, Lidia comes face to face with Pollux, with Ruhn unexpectedly at her side. Pollux reveals that he captured Lidia’s sons after threatening a mer spy into giving up their location. He taunts Lidia and Ruhn and makes clear that he intends to kill the boys in front of Lidia.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 93

Pollux has Brann and Actaeon on their knees in shackles and sends the two guards off to find Rigelus, leaving the group momentarily exposed. Tharion seizes the opening and fires a concentrated blast of water at Pollux, but Pollux dodges the attack and shoots Tharion in the chest, putting him down.

With Tharion out of the fight, Pollux tells Lidia to pick which of her sons dies first. She drops to her knees and begs him to name his price. Ruhn steps in and offers himself as a straight trade, then deliberately goads Pollux by revealing that Lidia is Ruhn’s mate, knowing the claim will wound Pollux’s ego and hold his focus. He promises to surrender without weapons or magic if Pollux lets Lidia, the boys, and Tharion walk free.

Before Lidia can respond, Ruhn tells her through their mind connection that he loves her, cuts the link, and turns himself over to Pollux.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 94

Pollux turns on Lidia’s sons and fires a killing blast at Brann. Lidia throws herself over Brann and unleashes her secret fire magic, sending Pollux flying. She orders Ruhn to get her sons and the badly wounded Tharion out, then hunts Pollux down, traps him in flame, and burns him to ash from the inside.

Lidia then races onto the battlefield and destroys Mordoc, his snipers, the dreadwolf pack, and a wave of Asterian Guard angels. When a full line of war machines locks onto her and her allies, she charges them, ready to die stopping the missiles. At the last second, three fire sprites melt the launchers from behind enemy lines, and Irithys appears alongside them. The four sprites and Lidia combine their fire and wipe out the remaining machines.

Back in the palace, Ruhn’s powers surge dramatically. He kills two angel guards with his shadow magic and, to his own surprise, heals Tharion’s fatal chest wound with a healing ability he never knew he had. He gets Tharion and Lidia’s sons out of the palace and runs into Ithan, who’s frantically searching for Bryce. Ruhn points him toward the palace and watches him go.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 95

Bryce and Hunt are barely holding on. They’ve been teleporting nonstop to dodge Rigelus while Hunt’s lightning slowly melts through the crystal protecting the firstlight core. The problem is that Bryce has pushed her power too far and can hardly stay upright. They need one last hit to break through, but Bryce has nothing left.

That’s when Ithan appears in the hallway with the Godslayer Rifle. He explains that the dead of Crescent City sent him, and Connor personally wanted Bryce to have the rifle. Inside is a single bullet carrying the dead citizens’ secondlight, which Bryce understands is essentially a bomb. Bryce hands Hunt the Mask, tells him to leave the palace, and teleports to the core room alone.

Bryce’s plan is simple. Bryce must fire the bullet into the hole Hunt opened in the crystal to finally release the firstlight. Bryce already knows what it will cost. The moment Bryce stops moving to line up the shot, Rigelus will hit her, and this time nobody will absorb the blow.

When Bryce arrives, Rigelus is no longer alone. Three other Asteri stand with Rigelus, cutting Bryce off from the core. Before Bryce can figure out her next move, Rigelus warns her that destroying the firstlight core would destroy Midgard along with it.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 96

Bryce still has the Godslayer Rifle trained on the firstlight core. Rigelus explains that the core is bound to Midgard’s survival and that destroying it will doom every living soul on the planet. He then shifts tactics and tries to bargain with Bryce, promising her power, freedom for the dead, and a reshaped world if she stands down.

Unmoved, Bryce fires anyway. As the bullet descends toward the core, Rigelus grabs her wrist, and his touch burns through her skin and bones. But instead of being destroyed by Rigelus’s touch, Bryce pulls his power into herself and recognizes it for what it truly is. It was never his. It was firstlight, taken from the people of Midgard all along, and now it belongs to her.

Bryce channels that stolen power through the Horn in her back and opens a portal just as the core ruptures and Midgard starts collapsing inward. She pushes the core and the growing void through the portal, then widens the portal enough to drag the Asteri in after them. Before Bryce can do anything else, the portal pulls her through too, and she ends up in deep space.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 97

Ruhn watches the Asteri’s crystal palace collapse and realizes Bryce has gone down alone to face the monsters inside. Ruhn takes the twins and Tharion and runs for the city gates, but a strange force drags the three of them back toward the destruction.

Hunt tries to reach Bryce when the palace comes down, but he must choose between Bryce and saving Ithan. He grabs Ithan and gets them both into the air. At the edge of a massive crater, Hunt sees an open void full of stars and spots Bryce’s starlight caught among the Asteri, all of them drawn toward a black hole on the other side.

Bryce is barely holding on inside the void, kept alive by the Horn. Bryce used the Starsword and Truth-Teller together to tear open a portal to a black hole and pull the Asteri and the firstlight core in with it. The core had been rigged as a kill switch that could destroy Midgard, so Bryce countered it with a black hole of her own. It works, and the core is gone.

The problem is that Bryce is now too far from the portal to get back. Bryce watches the Asteri get swallowed one by one. Rigelus manages to kick Austrus into the event horizon to buy himself time, but the force of the impact sends Rigelus straight into Bryce. Bryce wraps herself around Rigelus to ensure he crosses the threshold, knowing she’ll cross it too.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 98

Bryce has thrown herself into a black hole in the middle of the city, and Hunt is left outside with the Mask Bryce pressed into his hands. Aidas appears and tells Hunt it’s hopeless. Bryce is probably already dead, and Rigelus is pulling her toward the Void.

Then Hunt puts it together. Bryce left him the Mask on purpose, betting that Bryce’s Made essence inside him might be enough for him to wield it. Before Hunt can act on that realization, the soul of Shahar arrives piloting a mech suit and offers him a way through the portal. Hunt gets in and goes.

Oxygen runs out fast in the void of space, and Hunt puts on the Mask as a last resort. Hunt can see Bryce and Rigelus locked in a struggle near the event horizon, too tangled for a clean shot. Hunt fires the suit’s one remaining brimstone missile anyway. Shahar’s soul guides the missile into Rigelus and knocks him over the threshold and into the Void. Hunt reaches Bryce, pulls Bryce’s unconscious body against the suit, and burns the last of the suit’s firepower to get them back to the portal.

But the portal is already closing. Suddenly, Aidas and Apollion throw themselves against the portal to hold it open. Apollion catches Hunt’s rope of lightning and hauls Hunt and Bryce forward. Ruhn, Lidia, and nearly everyone they know add their power to keep the gap from sealing. It holds just long enough. Hunt and Bryce come crashing down onto Midgard, and Hunt tears his way out of the suit to get to Bryce. Bryce isn’t moving. The Mask tells Hunt what he hadn’t let himself believe. Bryce is dead.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 99

Bryce dies after going too long without oxygen, and even Hunt’s repeated attempts to restart her heart with lightning don’t work. Just when things seem hopeless, Hypaxia shows up wearing the Bone Crown and offers to try something. She tells the others that the Under-King is dead, which means any bargains he made are void and Bryce’s soul is finally her own.

Then Jesiba steps forward. She reveals that Apollion once cursed her with immortality, and she wants to give that long life to Bryce instead. Hypaxia will make the transfer possible. Jesiba says her goodbyes, and the ritual begins.

On the other side, Bryce finds herself somewhere warm and peaceful, and Jesiba is there with her. Jesiba lays out what happened and tells Bryce she has to go back. Jesiba then explains the Archesian amulet’s origins, connecting it to an ancient magic tied to Midgard itself. She also tells Bryce that the Parthos books and the gallery collection now belong to Bryce.

Before Bryce leaves, she spots Danika, Connor, the Pack of Devils, and Lehabah on a distant hill, all of them at peace. She and Danika call their old phrase, “Light it up,” to each other across the plain, and Bryce blows a kiss to Lehabah. Jesiba promises Bryce that everyone will be there when the time comes, then sends her back through a crystal archway toward life and toward Hunt.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 100

Bryce wakes up surrounded by her allies, who are overwhelmed with relief. She learns that Sabine is dead and that Ithan has become Prime. As the group begins to absorb the fact that the Asteri are gone, Bryce and Hunt share an emotional reunion.

Hunt heads out to the battlefield to pay his respects to the Fallen, whose souls powered the mech-suits. Isaiah finds him there and argues that Hunt should lead the angels through whatever comes next. Hunt turns him down and tells Isaiah that he should take the role instead, then flies back to Bryce.

Bryce travels to Nena with Hunt and opens a portal to the Fae world, where her parents have been staying with Nesta and Cassian. She tells them that Midgard is free and returns the Mask and Truth-Teller to Nesta, following through on the deal she made. Ember and Randall say warm goodbyes before stepping back through the portal.

On her way out, Bryce hands the Starsword to Nesta as well. She tells Nesta that the age of the Starborn has ended on Midgard and that the eight-pointed star Nesta carries might mean something worth figuring out. The portal closes behind Bryce and Hunt as they head home.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 101

Lidia and Ruhn watch from the pier as Renki and Davit arrive by transport pod. The reunion between the two men and the boys is warm and emotional, and both fathers take a moment to embrace Lidia as well, thanking her.

Brann, the more open of the two brothers, hugs Lidia and calls her “Mom,” then crosses to hug Ruhn and thank him for what he risked to save them. Ace is quieter and more guarded, but he thanks Lidia sincerely and tells her to take care of herself. The boys then board the pod with their fathers and head back to the Depth Charger.

Meanwhile, Bryce and Hunt are overseeing Hel’s forces crossing back through the Northern Rift. Apollion tells Hunt he owes nothing to Hel, and Bryce thanks him for standing by Midgard. Aidas lingers for a warmer farewell, and Bryce tells him she believes he’ll one day be welcomed into the afterlife that Theia inhabits. Both princes wave goodbye before Bryce seals the Rift shut behind them.

In the Meat Market, Tharion is looking for Sathia, despite the Ocean Queen offering him a commander’s role on the Depth Charger. He barely gets a block in before Ariadne steps out of the shadows and questions why he’d be foolish enough to return.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 102

Bryce arrives at the Autumn King’s villa and, with cameras rolling and Fae nobility watching, announces that her one and only act as queen is to dissolve the monarchy permanently. The Autumn King’s city properties will house people displaced by the attack on Asphodel Meadows, and the rest of the royal holdings across Valbara and Avallen will be sold off to fund the rebuilding. Bryce signs the documents using the Autumn King’s pen.

Meanwhile, Ruhn sets Lidia up in a new apartment just one floor below Bryce’s, with a room kept ready for her sons whenever they want to visit. Ruhn and Lidia talk about what a normal life might actually look like for people like them, crack open a couple of beers, and toast to figuring it out together.

Over at Aux headquarters, Lidia lays out the immediate problems facing the city, including the risk of the firstlight power grid collapsing and the likelihood that powerful Archangels will move to fill the vacuum left by the Asteri. Ithan, meanwhile, begins to find his footing as Prime.

At what will soon be the new Griffin Antiquities, Bryce tells Hunt that Hypaxia called to say the antidote could potentially reach everyone by early spring, though she needs more of Hunt’s lightning to keep production going. Bryce and Hunt then discuss next steps for the Fae, including setting up a democratic senate.

In a state of panic, Baxian calls from Avallen. A herd of winged horses has turned up on the island out of nowhere. Bryce suspects the horses were somehow kept hidden and preserved until it was safe for them to surface. She and Hunt head for Avallen at dawn.
