House of Flame and Shadow Chapters 68–84 Summary

This Sarah J. Maas House of Flame and Shadow chapter summary contains full spoilers.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 68

Hypaxia has converted a morgue into a makeshift lab and put Ithan to work collecting water samples from multiple sources around the city, including the sewers. She’s also collecting some of Ithan’s blood so she has a reference point for what the parasite looks like inside a living host.

On his way back inside the House of Flame and Shadow, Ithan crosses paths with a Reaper, and the encounter gets him thinking. He brings the question back to Hypaxia. Since Reapers are dead and no longer consume anything, does the parasite survive in them, or does the parasite die with the host? Hypaxia immediately sees the potential. If Reapers simply lack the parasite altogether, they could be a useful tool for isolating it. Hypaxia tells Ithan that she needs him to bring her a Reaper.

Meanwhile, on Avallen, Bryce stands in a field near the ruins of Morven’s castle, watching a helicopter come in. Fury and Juniper are at the controls, and stepping out after them are Syrinx, Randall, and Emile, who now goes by Cooper. Then Bryce’s mother climbs out and wastes no time demanding to know what all this talk is about Bryce jumping between worlds.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 69

Jesiba summons a Reaper to the morgue, and Ithan waits nervously while Hypaxia examines the Reaper. Hypaxia reads the Reaper’s mind and finds no sign of a parasite, which supports the direction of their theory. Her next step is to compare what she sensed in the Reaper with what she already found in Ithan’s blood, hoping to pinpoint where the parasite is hiding.

Over on Avallen, Bryce sorts through the supplies Fury brought by helicopter as Bryce and the others prepare to head to Nena. Bryce has a genuine moment with Fury and Juniper, apologizing to Juniper for past wrongs. Before parting ways, Bryce runs through what Fury and Juniper should do if Bryce doesn’t come back, and she gives Fury a photo of their old friend group to hold onto. Fury gives the photo back and tells Bryce to take it with her.

Bryce then finds her mother, Ember Quinlan, standing over the place where the Autumn King is buried. Bryce and Ember share an emotional moment, and Ember tells Bryce how proud she is of her. Hunt eventually signals that it’s time to leave, and Bryce pulls away from Ember and heads for the helicopter.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 70

Ithan finds Hypaxia slumped over her desk in the morgue, completely drained. Hypaxia has already cracked the cure, working from the synth antidote as a base and using Hunt’s lightning to hold it together. The downside is that the cure is fragile and won’t last. Midgard’s water is still contaminated, so the parasite will keep coming back, and a single dose might only hold the parasite off for weeks or months at best.

Before Hypaxia can test the antidote on herself, Ithan grabs the vial and drinks it. He briefly loses consciousness, then comes to completely changed. His senses are sharper, his shifting is faster, and the mental block that had kept him submissive is gone. Most surprisingly, Ithan can summon ice and snow out of thin air, a kind of elemental power no wolf has ever been known to have. He decides it’s time to start making plans, with Sabine clearly on his mind.

Meanwhile, Bryce, Hunt, and Bryce’s parents arrive at the Northern Rift. The guard station is completely abandoned and frozen solid, which is a bad sign. The group manages to get one heater going in the booth and locate the switch to open the gate. Just before Bryce, Hunt, and Bryce’s parents head through, Randall calls them back to look at the security footage, and whatever Randall shows them convinces Hunt that they need to move to the Rift right away.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 71

Ithan bursts in on Jesiba with news, but she makes him pack crates while he talks. He tells her he wants to go to the wolf Den before he and Hypaxia leave for the Eternal City. He wants the wolves to know the truth about Sigrid and understand that they have a real alternative to Sabine.

Jesiba warns that Ithan will be killed without an invitation and that the wolves will assume his new powers are some trick of Bryce’s. Ithan insists the wolves deserve the chance to choose differently. He then remembers the research papers Danika left behind that questioned the Fendyr power structure and decides to bring them as supporting proof. Jesiba is skeptical but lets him go.

Ithan sneaks through the sewers to Bryce’s apartment, retrieves Danika’s papers, and confirms they say what he remembered. Standing in the empty apartment, he glances toward Bryce’s bedroom and decides he won’t walk into the Den empty-handed.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 72

Bryce gets her parents through the gate and fills them in on the Harpy, explaining that the Asteri used Hunt’s lightning to turn the Harpy into something far worse than before. Hunt flies Ember to the Rift while Bryce teleports Randall, who doesn’t handle the experience well. At the center of the walled ring, they find a massive quartz arch the Asteri built around the Rift to contain or control it. Randall asks whether opening the Rift is a good idea, and Bryce admits it probably isn’t, but she has no better plan.

Across the city, Ithan slips into the wolf Den through the sewers and talks Perry into letting him address the pack. He tells them something they’ve never been told. The Asteri planted a parasite in wolf brains to cut off the wolves’ real magic, keeping them limited to basic shifting and strength so they’d remain loyal, controllable enforcers.

Ithan produces ice from his hand to prove it, showing the elemental magic that had lain dormant until Hypaxia reversed the parasite’s effects. He also reveals the truth about what actually happens to wolf souls in the Bone Quarter.

As Ithan starts to announce that there’s another Fendyr heir, Amelie moves to shut him down. Suddenly, Sabine appears, and she isn’t alone. Beside Sabine stands Sigrid, the daughter of Sabine’s late brother.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 73

Sabine arrives with Sigrid, who has now fully transitioned into a Reaper, and the Astronomer backing her up. The Astronomer tells the crowd that Ithan kidnapped Sigrid and turned her into a Reaper. Sabine accuses Ithan of murdering Sigrid in cold blood and claims she has video proof. She then declares Sigrid her new heir and announces that Sigrid is defecting to Earth and Blood.

The Prime appears and stops everything. He tells the crowd that what Ithan said is true, admits that he spent years looking away from that truth himself, and names Ithan his heir on the spot, stripping Sabine of her title and rank.

Before Ithan can respond, Sabine snatches the sword from her father and kills him. Sigrid immediately moves in and devours the old wolf’s soul, and Sabine cuts off her father’s head.

Sabine then turns the sword on Ithan, who quickly shifts. When Sabine swings the sword in what should be a killing blow, Ithan charges straight into the blade, catches it in his jaws, and breaks it.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 74

Ithan destroys the Fendyr sword and tells Sabine it was never anything more than a piece of metal. Sabine lunges at him, and Ithan slides under her and guts her with a shard of the broken blade.

While that plays out, Sigrid kills the Astronomer, ripping out his heart and draining his soul before vanishing.

Ithan approaches the wounded Sabine, and after a short, bitter exchange, he kills her in wolf form before Sabine can get another word out. The bloodlust takes over, and Ithan loses himself until Perry pulls him back by dropping to her knees and baring her throat in submission. Amelie follows Perry’s lead, and Ithan accepts both submissions.

Amelie then declares Ithan Prime of the Valbaran Wolves out loud, and howls spread across the city and into the wilderness in response. Ithan howls back and thinks he can hear his dead brother answering from the Bone Quarter.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 75

Ruhn and Lidia move through the sewers toward the Comitium while Flynn and Dec break off to check the Aux headquarters for any sign of Isaiah and Naomi. The goal is to catch Isaiah and Naomi before the group has to hunt the two triarii down elsewhere, then find somewhere private to fill them in. Along the way, Ruhn and Lidia quietly confirm they’re officially a couple, and they kick open a tunnel door that leads them closer to the Comitium.

Meanwhile, Tharion and Sathia reach the river and find it overrun with imperial warships. Tharion is furious and briefly tempted to sink the fleet himself, but Sathia pulls him back on task. They’re there to get an audience with the River Queen and ask her to take people in. Tharion bribes an otter messenger to carry the request down to the Blue Court, and then they wait.

Elsewhere, Bryce stands at the Northern Rift ready to open it so the demon princes can cross through from Hel. Her parents are there and rattled by the whole thing. Bryce asks Hunt to power the opening with his lightning rather than risk testing her new abilities on something that consequential. Hunt thinks briefly about what Apollion revealed to him about the true nature of his power and about the thunderbirds now lost forever. Then he counts to three and fires.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 76

Bryce channels Hunt’s lightning through the Horn and her star-shaped mark to force the Northern Rift open somewhere other than Hel. The plan works, and through the void Bryce and Hunt see a woman named Nesta sitting by a fireplace. Bryce greets her through the portal.

Meanwhile, Tharion and wife Sathia stand before the River Queen in an underwater control room. Tharion asks for asylum in the Blue Court for the people of Crescent City, acting on behalf of Bryce, who now rules the Fae. Sathia does much of the talking, holding her own against the queen’s pointed questions with striking composure.

When Tharion reveals that Bryce is allied with the Princes of Hel, the River Queen grows suspicious, but he argues that refusing to help would make her complicit in the Asteri’s slaughter. The River Queen seems about to answer when her daughter storms in, clearly furious.

Back at the Rift, Nesta greets them with a dagger drawn and silver flame building at her fingertips. Bryce reassures Nesta that she means no harm and introduces Hunt as her mate. When Nesta demands Bryce get to the point, Bryce asks her for the Mask.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 77

Bryce begs Nesta to let her borrow the Mask to take down the Asteri. Nesta refuses, and things get tense as Rhysand’s darkness starts closing in around the portal. Bryce tells Nesta that the Asteri have been slaughtering civilians in her world, including children, specifically to punish her and Hunt for defying them.

When words alone aren’t enough, Bryce offers Ember and Randall as collateral, promising to leave them in Nesta’s world until she returns the Mask. It’s clearly not an easy thing for Bryce to do, and Nesta seems to recognize that. Nesta agrees and passes the Mask through the portal to Bryce.

Hunt then uses his wind power to force Ember and Randall through before they fully understand what’s happening. Bryce closes the portal immediately using the Horn, cutting off her mother mid-shout and leaving her parents stranded on the other side.

Bryce and Hunt barely have a moment to process it before the Harpy ambushes them from above, her white-painted wings and clothing letting her hide almost invisibly in the snow and mist.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 78

The moment the River Queen’s daughter learns that Tharion married Sathia, she dissolves into tears. Tharion loses his temper and points out that civilians are dying while the River Queen and her daughter fixate on his personal life. He then apologizes to the River Queen’s daughter for leading her on and offers to divorce Sathia and marry her in exchange for the Blue Court taking in refugees. The River Queen refuses, saying she no longer wants her daughter tied to him.

The River Queen then reveals that she and her sisters remember the world before the Asteri and have quietly worked against them for centuries. She sent Tharion to find Sofie and her brother to keep them from the Asteri, not to use them for herself. Tharion admits that Emile turned out to be an ordinary human and that he hid the boy to protect him. The River Queen eventually agrees to take in anyone the Blue Court can bring down before the warships notice.

At the Northern Rift, the Harpy waits, having returned from the dead through Hunt’s lightning. Celestina arrives with Isaiah and Naomi, trapping Hunt and Bryce between two threats. Bryce puts on the Mask, commands the Harpy to stop and kneel, then tells her to rest. The Harpy’s body withers and decays, leaving Celestina, Isaiah, and Naomi staring at Bryce in stunned silence.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 79

Ruhn calls Flynn and Declan to report that Isaiah and Naomi have vanished from the triarii barracks, and no one has seen either of them for days. They agree to keep looking and set a meetup time for sunset. Suddenly, Lidia gets a message that stops everyone cold. Pollux has taken her sons.

Up north, Hunt and Bryce run into Celestina, Isaiah, and Naomi, who defied Asteri orders to track down the resurrected Harpy on their own. Hunt is furious over Celestina’s past betrayal and unleashes his lightning on her. In the process, he figures out how to break his own enslavement halo and then shatters Isaiah’s as well. When Hunt is about to kill Celestina, Bryce pulls him back, telling him they need Celestina alive. Celestina yields and swears on Solas to help them.

Bryce lays out the plan. She’ll use the Mask, powered by Theia’s star, to call back the souls of the Fallen and place them inside the Asteri’s pilotless mech-suits at Mount Hermon. Isaiah and Naomi will command that army to keep the Asteri occupied while Bryce and Hunt go straight for them. Celestina gets a separate job of keeping Ephraim far away from the capital.

Hunt channels his power into the Northern Rift to force it open, and Prince Aidas walks through onto Midgard.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 80

Ithan, now Prime of the wolves, goes straight to Jesiba and asks her to get him an audience with the Under-King. He wants one last chance to see Connor after hearing his brother’s howl coming from the Bone Quarter. Jesiba agrees to look into it and tells Ithan to bring Hypaxia along.

Then Jesiba passes along a message from Bryce, who wants Ithan to bring the antidote and a contingent of wolves to the Eternal City the following day. Jesiba advises Ithan to get the vulnerable wolves out of Lunathion and into hiding first, then bring only the strongest fighters.

Meanwhile, Bryce slips into a guard booth for a quiet moment after sending her parents through to the Fae world. It’s a choice she knows was selfish, but she doesn’t regret it. The moment doesn’t last. Ruhn calls with bad news. Pollux ambushed a ship near Avallen, killed several mer, and now has Lidia’s sons in custody at the palace. Ruhn is already on his way to the Eternal City with Flynn and Declan.

Bryce agrees to go immediately and heads outside, where Hunt, Aidas, Isaiah, and Naomi are waiting, with the full armies of Hel spread out behind them across Midgard. She tells Ruhn to inform Lidia they’re coming and that Bryce and Hunt will have backup.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 81

Ithan and Hypaxia meet at the Black Dock and throw their Death Marks into the river to call for the Under-King. While they wait for the boat, they talk briefly about the people they’ve lost and the weight those absences still carry. When the boat finally arrives, it takes them across to the Bone Quarter, where Ithan and Hypaxia appear before the Under-King in a temple to Urd.

Inside the temple, Ithan gets straight to the point and asks to speak with his dead brother Connor. The Under-King needles Ithan about the request but agrees and gives him seven minutes instead of the five Ithan asked for. The Under-King points toward the temple exit, and when Ithan turns around, Connor is already standing in the doorway.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 82

Ithan sits with Connor’s ghost on the temple steps while Hypaxia speaks with the Under-King inside. Ithan quickly discovers that Connor can’t speak at all. The two brothers try to communicate through gestures and expressions. Ithan catches Connor up on everything, and Connor responds with clear pride rather than judgment.

With time almost gone, Connor secretly produces a black bullet made from the same metal as a Death Mark and tries to communicate something urgent about the object. Before Ithan can grasp Connor’s meaning, the Under-King returns, and Ithan pockets the bullet before the Under-King notices it.

When the Under-King declares their time is over, Ithan’s temper breaks and he starts arguing. Then something ancient wakes up inside Ithan, a power that recognizes the Under-King as an old enemy, and an uncontrollable cold begins radiating from Ithan’s body. Ithan channels that power into the Under-King until the Under-King is completely encased in ice on the temple steps.

Connor moves to stop Ithan, but Jesiba steps out from inside the temple and tells Hypaxia to act. Hypaxia picks up an unlit brazier and smashes it into the frozen Under-King, breaking him apart completely.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 83

Ithan and Hypaxia kill the Under-King together. Because Hypaxia struck the killing blow, Jesiba tells her that leadership of the House of Flame and Shadow now falls to her. Hypaxia accuses Jesiba of orchestrating the whole thing, but Jesiba brushes off the accusation and urges Ithan and Hypaxia to move fast before Rigelus catches wind of what happened.

With Hypaxia now holding authority over the dead, Connor’s ghost can speak. Connor leads the group to the Dead Gate and tells them that the souls there spent their time crafting a bullet for Bryce to use with the Godslayer Rifle. He says the dead have already started funneling their secondlight into the Gate. Connor says his goodbyes and steps into the Gate, then Ithan collects the light inside the bullet.

Hypaxia stays behind to handle the Reapers and puts Jesiba in charge of assisting her. Jesiba then sends Ithan to Pangera to deliver the bullet to Bryce.

Elsewhere, Tharion and Sathia finish setting up a refugee evacuation plan with the Blue Court. The moment they step outside, the Viper Queen corners them in an alley with a group of Fae assassins. Sathia recognizes one of the assassins as Colin McCarthy, someone she clearly knew before, and the Viper Queen reveals that Sathia’s father handed Colin over to her. When the situation turns dangerous, Tharion offers himself up so Sathia can walk away.

Before anything worse happens, Hypaxia and Ithan arrive.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 84

The Viper Queen and her guards have Tharion and Sathia cornered until Hypaxia steps forward and declares herself Head of the House of Flame and Shadow. She warns that harming Tharion and Sathia will bring serious consequences. Ithan backs her up by revealing that he’s the Prime of the Valbaran Wolves. The Viper Queen isn’t thrilled, but she backs off, refusing to lift Tharion’s bounty entirely, though she agrees to let him go for now.

Once the tension breaks, the group catches up. Tharion mentions that Bryce is in Nena, which unsettles both Ithan and Hypaxia, and they agree they need to reach her as soon as possible. On the way inside the House of Flame and Shadow, Sathia tells Tharion that losing Colin was her Ordeal, something she only understood after the fact.

In Jesiba’s office, Tharion tries to reach Bryce and the others, but reception is nearly useless. Hypaxia suspects that demonic magic is scrambling communications as the Rift opens. The group turns its focus to figuring out how to reach Bryce and Hunt before things escalate with the Asteri.

Ithan then shares two pieces of news. Hypaxia has found something that can counteract the Asteri’s parasite, and Ithan produces a dark, strange bullet that feels ancient and unlike anything Tharion has encountered. Ithan says they need to get the bullet to Bryce and that the bullet came from those no longer living.
