House of Flame and Shadow Chapters 17–33 Summary

This Sarah J. Maas House of Flame and Shadow chapter summary contains full spoilers.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 17

Bryce, Azriel, and Nesta step through a star door into a dark tunnel, which slams shut behind them. The star on Bryce’s chest fades. Azriel conjures faelight to guide the group forward, and at the end of the passage, they find a vast circular chamber covered in carved symbols. Nesta recognizes the chamber as the Prison.

Meanwhile, Ithan waits in the Viper Queen’s fighting pit with Flynn, Declan, Tharion, and Sigrid. When the Viper Queen arrives, she reveals that Ariadne has taken work elsewhere rather than go through with hurting Ithan. The Viper Queen then announces that the Fendyr heir will be Ithan’s actual opponent.

Back in the Prison, Bryce fakes a warning about a threat behind Azriel and uses the distraction to slip past the ward line before he can stop her. Neither Azriel nor Nesta can follow.

Alone, Bryce studies the carved floor and recognizes it as a map of her world’s planets and constellations. She asks Nesta about a harp that once sat on the chamber’s central eight-pointed star. Nesta explains that the harp was a Made object capable of transporting people across distances and stopping time. Bryce suspects the Asteri were behind such creations and wonders aloud whether a Made horn ever existed in this world as well.

Bryce concludes that the chamber was a waypoint for someone who could read the map and understand its purpose, and that the tunnel carvings are an invitation to find the truth. She steps onto the star.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 18

Hunt, Baxian, and Ruhn are left hanging in chains while Pollux is away. Hunt urges Ruhn to attempt an escape. Ruhn swings toward a nearby weapons rack, hoping to grab an iron poker with his feet and force his chains apart. Hunt kicks Ruhn mid-swing to extend his range, but the rack remains just out of reach. Out of options, Ruhn suggests that someone bite off his hand so he can reach far enough. Baxian volunteers, sparing Hunt from the task.

Meanwhile, Lidia uses her cycle as an excuse to steal a few moments alone and plan her next move until Pollux walks in and informs her that Rigelus and the others have revived the Harpy.

In the other world, Bryce steps onto an eight-pointed star that projects a hologram of a dark-haired young woman named Silene. Nesta crosses through the wards to stand beside Bryce, while Azriel remains at the tunnel entrance and quietly notes that Silene resembles Rhysand’s sister.

Silene then draws Bryce, Nesta, and Azriel into a vision that reveals the Daglan enslaved the High Fae for five thousand years, extracting a portion of the Fae’s power each year as tribute to fuel the Daglan’s strength and keep the Fae weak. The vision ends on a golden-haired Fae woman who once served at an Asteri’s side, and Bryce recognizes the woman as Theia.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 19

Lidia learns from Pollux that the Harpy is close to being revived, possibly within a day or two. It’s a serious problem for Lidia, since the Harpy saw what really happened the night Lidia killed her and could expose Lidia if she wakes up.

Elsewhere, the Viper Queen puts Ithan and Sigrid in an impossible position, telling them they have to fight each other in the ring or she won’t help the group with their rescue mission. Ithan refuses, but Sigrid agrees to fight him.

Meanwhile, Bryce watches a vision narrated by Silene that walks through the ancient history of the Fae. Silene’s mother, Theia, stole the Dread Trove from the Daglan and helped bring them down, then claimed the power for herself.

Later, Theia’s ally, Pelias, secretly made contact with a surviving Daglan and manipulated Theia into using the Horn and Harp to open a portal to Midgard. Theia had no idea she was leading her people into a trap. The Daglan had set the whole thing up to get their hands on the Trove and leave Theia’s home world defenseless.

Once the Fae arrived on Midgard, they slaughtered the native humans and seized their land. Bryce is shaken to realize she comes from that bloodline, but she keeps listening, hoping the history will eventually reveal something that can help Bryce save Midgard.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 20

Ithan is forced to fight Sigrid in a ring controlled by the Viper Queen while Flynn, Declan, and Tharion watch. The fight is brutal and competitive. Tharion spends most of it drowning in guilt, knowing the situation is entirely his fault and that the Viper Queen traded Ariadne away because of him.

Partway through the match, the Viper Queen reveals that the fight must end in death, not a knockout.

In the other world, Bryce watches visions from Silene that reveal the true origins of the Asteri and show how Theia, once she understood the threat the Asteri posed, opened a portal and sought help from Prince Aidas and the forces of Hel.

Meanwhile, Hunt, Ruhn, and Baxian attempt a desperate prison escape. Baxian bites through Ruhn’s wrist to free him from his chains, but just as the three of them begin to believe they might actually make it out, Rigelus appears in the doorway.

Back in the ring, when Ithan finally gains the upper hand, Sigrid thanks him for pulling her out of the tank. Ithan lowers his claws, ready to walk away from the bargain.

Sigrid uses that moment of mercy to lunge for Ithan’s throat. She keeps coming with full Alpha aggression until Ithan realizes she’ll really kill him. He swings for Sigrid’s shoulder to bring her down without finishing her, but she shifts at the last second, and his claws go through her throat instead.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 21

Silene explains that Aidas had been tracking the Asteri for years through spies in Midgard. Aidas and Theia made contact through a portal and began planning together.

Theia took her daughters to Parthos to recruit humans and Fae, where the group learned a devastating truth. The Asteri had contaminated the water with parasites that burrowed into magical beings and let the Asteri harvest their power through a coming-of-age ceremony. Anyone who skipped the ritual would slowly waste away.

Eventually, Theia had gathered ten thousand Fae, and Aidas had contributed fifty thousand soldiers from Hel, but the war turned against them. On the night before a major assault, Theia gave the Horn to Helena and the Harp to Silene, pushed some of her magic into both daughters, and ordered them to open a portal home and seal it behind them. Afterward, Theia rode out to battle.

As the sisters fled, crowds of their own people followed, hoping to get through. Helena decided to turn back and lead the wolves away so Silene could reach the portal. Helena shoved Silene through the portal with the Harp and never followed. Down the mountain, Pelias struck Theia down and took the Starsword.

Silene landed on the other side, sealed the portal, and left everyone behind. Silene spent the rest of her life erasing all public record of what had happened while privately passing the true history down through her descendants to preserve that knowledge.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 22

Rigelus offers Hunt a deal. If Hunt hands over a sliver of his lightning, all three prisoners go unharmed. Hunt refuses, so Rigelus tells him to choose which friend dies instead. Hunt can’t bring himself to do it, but the moment Hunt reaches inward toward his power, Rigelus takes that as consent. Rigelus presses a quartz crystal to Hunt’s arm and rips the lightning out. Then Rigelus orders one prisoner killed anyway as punishment for Hunt’s initial refusal.

After the others leave, Lidia injects healing potions into Hunt and Baxian’s spines, telling Pollux and the Hawk that the treatment will let their wings regrow so their enemies can use those wings against them again. But the truth is, Lidia actually needs Hunt and Baxian able to fly. Once she’s alone with the prisoners, she lowers them from their chains and tries to reach Ruhn through their telepathic connection to warn him of her escape plan. Ruhn doesn’t respond.

Elsewhere, when Azriel moves for the tunnel to get reinforcements, Bryce taps into an ancient power Silene left behind in the stone, seals the exit, and raises spikes from the ground to hold Azriel and Nesta back. Nesta warns that pushing too far risks freeing the creatures locked inside and threatens to cut the Horn from Bryce’s skin. Bryce stomps her foot, and the ground collapses beneath all three of them.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 23

Lidia arrives at the Mystics hall and waits until the Mistress leaves before approaching Irithys. Lidia tells Irithys that Hunt Athalar is in the dungeon and asks for help breaking Hunt and two other prisoners free. After some resistance, Irithys agrees.

Then Lidia brings in Hilde and promises Hilde freedom in exchange for removing the tattoo that binds Irithys’s power. Hilde only cooperates after Lidia puts a gun to Hilde’s head. Once the tattoo dissolves and Irithys’s full power returns, Irithys immediately incinerates Hilde.

With that done, Lidia asks Irithys to burn her arm badly enough to support a cover story that Irithys broke free on her own. Lidia gives Irithys a route out of the palace through camera blind spots, along with instructions on where to hide and when to strike as a diversion. Irithys agrees and burns Lidia.

In the other world, Bryce has just survived a collapse with Nesta and Azriel. The power Bryce absorbed from Silene has permanently fused with her own, tied to the shared light both women inherited from Theia.

In the chamber below where the trio landed, Bryce finds a quartz coffin holding a preserved dark-haired woman inside. Bryce concludes that the site was once an Asteri palace and that Theia’s warning about evil sleeping beneath them was never a figure of speech. Something ancient is entombed right beneath their feet.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 24

After falling into a hidden chamber beneath the Prison, Bryce, Nesta, and Azriel find a crystal coffin with a sleeping female inside. The female wakes up, declares herself their god and master, and orders Azriel to kill Bryce, but he refuses. The female recognizes the Trove item on Bryce and accuses Theia of stealing the Horn and giving the rest of the Trove to Nesta. That’s when Bryce realizes the female is an Asteri, one of the ancient rulers who once controlled that world.

Meanwhile, Ithan had accidentally killed Sigrid at the Meat Market when Sigrid dodged directly into the path of his blow. The group then escapes in a waiting car, and as they drive away, they learn the sprites burned the Meat Market down behind them. Ithan is devastated and barely speaks.

Back in the chamber, Bryce taunts the Asteri by revealing that Theia and the other Asteri have been dead for fifteen thousand years. The Asteri explains that Theia tricked her into entering the coffin and sealed her inside to starve. Bryce decides the creature might hold answers Bryce urgently needs, so she strikes a deal to release the Asteri in exchange for information. Despite Azriel’s protests, Bryce unlocks the coffin.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 25

Bryce releases an imprisoned Asteri named Vesperus from her coffin and takes the Starsword from Azriel to arm herself. Instead of attacking, Bryce sits down with Vesperus to question her, while Nesta and Azriel hold their ground nearby with weapons drawn.

Vesperus explains that the Asteri originally came from a dying world and traveled between worlds looking for magical sustenance. She tells Bryce that her kind created the Cauldron and the Dread Trove by combining their power, and that the Cauldron is now bound to this world so deeply that destroying one would destroy the other.

Bryce mentions that Rigelus poisoned Midgard’s water supply to drain magic from its people, but Vesperus refuses to help Bryce reverse the damage.

Then Bryce threatens Vesperus with Apollion the Star-Eater, which rattles Vesperus, but the Asteri steadies herself and rises to her feet. She reveals that the Asteri stashed reserves of their power beneath sacred mountains across the land, and that this island holds one of those caches. She then gloats that Theia never found the firstlight core buried beneath her old palace here and starts pulling from it to restore her strength.

Before Vesperus can fully recharge, Nesta drives Ataraxia through Vesperus’s chest from behind, killing her.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 26

As Ithan, Tharion, Flynn, Declan, Marc, and the sprites travel to the docks at Ionia, Ithan wrestles with guilt over accidentally killing Sigrid, who was crucial to the future of the Valbaran wolves. The group hopes to board a ship called the Depth Charger.

Elsewhere, Bryce, Nesta, and Azriel are in the middle of a fight with Vesperus. Nesta draws first blood with Ataraxia but can’t finish Vesperus off. Bryce grabs both the Starsword and Truth-Teller at once and drives them into Vesperus, and while the combined power weakens Vesperus, it still isn’t enough to kill her.

Vesperus absorbs Azriel’s magic attack, tears the blades free, and is about to retaliate when Nesta decapitates her with Ataraxia and keeps driving the blade into Vesperus’s severed head until she stops moving.

Back at the docks, the group makes it to the boat. Tharion goes to stand beside Ithan, who’s staring out at the horizon. Suddenly, Ithan shifts and runs back toward Crescent City, leaving only a vague comment about needing to fix what he’d done. The rest of the group boards in stunned silence. Tharion blames himself for everything and wonders if he’ll ever see Valbara again.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 27

Bryce freezes for a moment after Vesperus dies. Nesta burns the Asteri’s remains with silver fire, and Bryce picks up the sword and dagger before turning on Nesta and Azriel, furious that they’ve destroyed their only source of answers. Nesta pushes back, and Azriel tells Bryce she’s coming with them through the passage. Bryce refuses.

Drawing on her power, Bryce carves a glowing warning line into the stone floor at Azriel’s feet. She swears on her mate’s life that she won’t reveal anything about that place, but Azriel steps over the line anyway and makes clear he can extract information whether she cooperates or not. In response, Bryce turns her power on the crystal sarcophagus. It darkens into a pit, and Azriel’s expression shifts when he notices she’s holding both blades.

Backing toward the opening, Bryce leaps through just as Nesta unleashes a wave of silver fire. The gate seals shut above Bryce, and she falls through the dark, heading home.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 28

Hunt wakes in the dungeon and notices that both his wings and Baxian’s are regrowing at an unnatural rate, which unsettles him. Aidas then appears in the form of a cat and proves his identity before telling Hunt that he’s searching for Bryce. When Hunt asks why Rigelus wanted his lightning, Aidas suggests that Rigelus sought it for the same reason others once pursued Sofie Renast‘s lightning. They wanted to resurrect the dead. The revelation shakes Hunt because he’s already given Rigelus some of his power.

Aidas then confirms that Rigelus has chosen Ruhn to die, knowing that losing Ruhn would hurt both Hunt and Bryce the most. Before vanishing, Hunt asks Aidas to deliver a message to Bryce if Aidas finds her, but Hunt can’t bring himself to finish the thought. Aidas tells Hunt that he understands and disappears.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 29

Bryce crash-lands back on Midgard directly in her father’s private study. The Autumn King moves fast and clamps gorsian shackles onto her wrists before she can react, cutting off her powers and taking the Starsword, Truth-Teller, and her phone.

Finding out whether Ruhn and Hunt are still alive is Bryce’s first priority, but the Autumn King brushes past the question and interrogates her about where she’s been. He already knew she’d left the planet, and the combination of that knowledge and Truth-Teller allows him to piece together that she visited a world he’s long wanted to reach himself.

The Autumn King has sealed the villa, sent everyone away, and plans to keep Bryce’s return secret until she gives him what he wants, while the threat of handing her over to the Asteri hangs between them.

Meanwhile, Ithan runs back to Crescent City alone. He couldn’t bring himself to leave with Tharion and the others, and now he moves through the city trying not to think too hard about what that decision means. He ends up at a black marble building near the Black Dock and knocks on a door covered in crude, ancient markings. The door swings open by itself, and Ithan walks down into the dark. He has entered the House of Flame and Shadow.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 30

The Autumn King holds Bryce captive with no phone, no TV, and no way to contact the outside world. At dinner, Bryce and the Autumn King agree to trade answers, one question at a time.

Through this back-and-forth, Bryce learns that Hunt and Ruhn are alive but locked in the Asteri’s dungeons and that she was gone for five days. She also learns that Ophion is essentially dead as a resistance force and that Cormac was killed.

In exchange, Bryce confirms that she traveled to the Fae home world, tells her father that the Asteri have been draining power from Midgard’s Fae through the Drop, and admits that she has the knife called Truth-Teller. When the Autumn King ends the dinner, Bryce leaves.

Meanwhile, Ithan descends a pitch-black staircase in the House of Flame and Shadow with no idea what waits at the bottom. He walks blindly until he crashes headfirst into a door. The door swings open to reveal Jesiba Roga standing on the other side.

House of Flame and Shadow Part 2: The Search

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 31

Jesiba brings Ithan to the House of Earth and Blood headquarters, and the two end up at the bar. Over drinks, Ithan gets to the point. He needs a necromancer. Jesiba assumes the request is about Ithan’s dead brother, but Ithan corrects her. Ithan needs to raise a lost Fendyr heir instead.

Meanwhile, Bryce probes the Autumn King for what he actually wants from her. The Autumn King opens up slightly, explaining that Fae bloodlines have been weakening for generations and that his obsession with preserving those bloodlines predates Bryce entirely.

Bryce presses the Autumn King about the Starsword and Truth-Teller, suggesting that the blades’ reunion fulfills an ancient Starborn prophecy. The Autumn King brushes off Bryce’s interpretation but doesn’t deny that the blades matter. He’s clearly been researching the Asteri privately and has a plan involving Bryce’s power, though he reveals nothing.

Then Bryce explains that the Asteri have been feeding on firstlight and secondlight through the Drop, slowly siphoning power from the people of Midgard over centuries. The Autumn King concludes that the weakening bloodlines are a direct result.

After a while, the Autumn King dismisses Bryce.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 32

Hunt, Ruhn, and Baxian are pulled from the dungeons and forced to make their way to an audience with Rigelus, escorted by Mordoc and his dreadwolves. All three are in terrible shape. Ruhn can barely stay on his feet and ends up being dragged by two soldiers for part of the walk.

When the group reaches the elevator, they find the Hind already inside. Lidia dismisses Mordoc and most of the unit, sending them upstairs to wait. The moment the doors close and only the Hawk and two soldiers remain with the prisoners, Lidia shoots the Hawk between the eyes.

House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 33

Lidia shoots the Hawk and two dreadwolves, frees Ruhn, Hunt, and Baxian from their shackles, and gets the group moving with under two minutes left to reach the getaway car.

The group piles into an imperial jeep in a parking garage. Baxian takes the mounted gun, and Lidia drives the jeep through guard station after guard station before punching through the main bridge gate despite twelve armed soldiers.

Flynn meets the group just outside the palace walls in a van and lays down cover fire. Over the radio, Lidia gives the order to blow the Spine, a string of imperial weapons depots running the length of the continent.

Irithys touches off the first blast, and the explosions tear through the whole line one after another, pulling every soldier’s attention away from the escape.

Flynn breaks off to cover the highway while Lidia pushes toward the city gate, which is already grinding shut. The group scrapes through just before the gate seals behind them.

Out in the countryside, Declan radios in with bad news. Mordoc and two dozen dreadwolves slipped out before the gate closed and are closing in fast, less than ten minutes behind the group. With only a single sidearm between them, Lidia tells Declan to have the ship ready for an aerial landing.
