This Sarah J. Maas House of Flame and Shadow chapter summary contains full spoilers.
House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 34
Bryce spends the day wandering the villa while the Autumn King remains shut away in his study. The villa is well stocked but sealed off from the outside world. Bryce eventually finds Ruhn’s old bedroom, frozen in time from when he left. A tub of burn salve tucked in Ruhn’s desk drawer breaks her, and she sits on his bed feeling utterly alone with no way out.
Meanwhile, Hunt, Ruhn, Baxian, and Lidia are on the run after a major strike against the empire, one Lidia made possible by freeing Irithys. Their escape car hits a dead end near the coast, so Lidia tells Hunt and Baxian to take to the air and carry Ruhn between them. Lidia plans to stay behind to draw Mordoc and the dreadwolves off the group’s trail.
Lidia shifts into her deer form, nuzzles Ruhn goodbye, and bolts into the trees. Hunt and Baxian get airborne with Ruhn hanging between them. Ruhn watches the wolf pack close in on Lidia and begs Hunt and Baxian to go back, but they push on. An aerial legion approaching from the east forces the three males toward the sea even faster. The last thing Ruhn sees before they clear the mountain is a sheer cliff on the seaward side, with nothing below Lidia but a fatal drop to the ocean.
House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 35
Hunt, Baxian, and Ruhn make it to the Depth Charger as it surfaces, with Tharion waving them down from the hatch. Ruhn is in bad shape and has lost a hand, but his only thought is Lidia, who’s still stranded on the cliffs. He pleads with Tharion to go after her, and Tharion, despite knowing the odds, strips down and dives into the sea.
Meanwhile, Lidia is racing up the mountain in her deer form, with Mordoc and the dreadwolves closing in fast. She finds a ledge curving around the cliff face, but the ledge leads nowhere except a sheer five-hundred-foot drop to the ocean below. She shifts to human form, and Mordoc’s snipers draw their rifles. He taunts her by comparing the moment to the night she shot Sofie Renast off a similar cliff.
Lidia knows that surrendering means being dragged back to the Asteri for a slow, brutal death. The cliff offers something quicker. She pulls off her silver torque, throws it in the dirt, and runs straight for the edge. The dreadwolves fire, but she weaves through the shots until she clears the drop and leaps. A bullet catches her in the chest on the way down, and she dies before hitting the water.
House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 36
Jesiba pulls Ithan out of the bar the moment he reveals who he wants brought back to life. He wants a necromancer to raise Sigrid Fendyr, and the guilt over Sigrid’s death is eating him alive. Jesiba agrees to find someone for the job, but she has conditions. Ithan must work for her first, helping sort and ship goods from her inventory, and she’ll see if he earns the favor. He has no choice, so he gets started.
Meanwhile, Bryce has been dodging the Autumn King all day, but he catches her on the stairs while she’s carrying dinner back to her room. She confronts him about his past choices and the damage he’s caused, and he admits that he lives with the regret. Bryce offers him a chance to do better if he helps free Hunt and Ruhn from the Asteri dungeons. The Autumn King tells Bryce they already escaped that morning. She had no idea, and he’d known the whole time. She hurls her plate at him.
The Autumn King threatens to point Rigelus toward Bryce’s family if she refuses to cooperate, then reveals something far more significant. The Starsword and the knife Bryce brought back can apparently be merged to open a void. The Autumn King found references to it in the Avallen Archives centuries ago but doesn’t know how to trigger it. Bryce wants to read the research herself, but the archives have never allowed women past the entrance, and Bryce would need an invitation from Morven to cross into Avallen. Neither option is available to her.
Bryce tells her father that she needs to lie down and walks away. Instead of returning to her own room, she ends up in Ruhn’s room.
House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 37
Ruhn refuses to leave Lidia’s bedside after she flatlined twice while he slept across the ship. Flynn tries to get him to rest, but Ruhn won’t move. Ruhn confesses that the last thing he said to Lidia was that she was dead to him. Before drifting off, he reaches out to Lidia telepathically and gets nothing back.
In the mess hall, Hunt finds Tharion and thanks him for the rescue. Hunt has been having nightmares about the dungeons and can’t stop worrying about Bryce stranded in another world. He asks Tharion to arrange a meeting with the Ocean Queen so Hunt can share what Bryce uncovered about the Asteri. Tharion agrees to contact Commander Sendes.
Hunt then finds Baxian alone in the gym, working through an intense weightlifting session to quiet his dark thoughts. Hunt and Baxian talk briefly about what comes next and agree on one thing. The Asteri have to go, and they’ll need Lidia on her feet when that time comes.
Tharion goes to Sendes and asks about arranging that meeting with the Ocean Queen. Sendes tells him the Ocean Queen is already on her way and arriving tomorrow, but the visit won’t be a warm one. Both the Viper Queen and the River Queen are threatening war over the group being harbored on the ship, and the Ocean Queen isn’t pleased.
House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 38
Ithan spends his time in Jesiba’s office unpacking crates and cataloging items until one of Jesiba’s magical books tries to escape through the door. After a short struggle, Jesiba re-wards the shelf, and the book settles back into place.
During that stretch, Ithan learns that Tharion, Flynn, and Declan have broken Hunt, Ruhn, and Baxian out of the Asteri’s dungeons. The news brings relief, though Ithan soon feels guilty because he had no part in the rescue.
Ithan then asks Jesiba about the Parthos books. She explains that the library was real and that roughly a hundred thousand humans marched to defend it from the Asteri, buying the priestesses enough time to smuggle the books onto ships. Most of the ships were caught, but one ship, the Griffin, made it through and eventually reached Valbara.
When Ithan asks how Jesiba knows all that so intimately, Jesiba reveals that she was one of those priestesses. Before the Griffin could reach safety, Apollion intercepted the ship. He was convinced the books contained some hidden weapon and cursed Jesiba to remain unchanged until she handed it over. His power also left a mark on her, and over time, she discovered that she had abilities far beyond what any human priestess should have. She’s been living with both the curse and those powers for fifteen thousand years.
Ithan asks if Jesiba ever wants it to end. Jesiba says not yet, not until the books have somewhere they can truly be safe.
House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 39
Bryce finds the Autumn King in his study examining the Starsword and Truth-Teller. She distracts him with a story about her stepfather Randall, then snaps a gorsian shackle onto his wrist to neutralize his power and seizes both weapons.
With the blades pointed at the Autumn King, Bryce gets what she came for and learns that the Starsword and Truth-Teller together can open a portal to “nowhere” and that there’s a place on Midgard where she can find out more about them. She then marches the Autumn King down to the basement and locks him in a fireproof closet.
Back in the study, Bryce grabs her phone and experiments with the Autumn King’s prism device. She finds that her starlight has changed and that it now carries a thread of darkness she absorbed from Silene’s power. She uses both prisms to bounce the light between them and absorb the resulting burst of energy, then teleports away.
On the Depth Charger, Ruhn has spent the night watching over Lidia. She finally wakes, and after a brief, disoriented exchange, she suddenly rips out her IV and takes off running. Ruhn chases her through the ship as she tears down hallways, pressing her face to the windows of classroom doors. She stops at the Year Nine room. Inside are two boys who look unmistakably like Lidia. When Flynn assumes they’re her brothers, Lidia corrects him quietly. They’re her sons.
House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 40
Hunt, Tharion, and Baxian are escorted into a tactical room aboard the Depth Charger to await the Ocean Queen. None of them have ever met her, and when she walks in, all three are thrown by how small she is. Her power, however, is another matter entirely, and the Ocean Queen is clearly not someone to underestimate.
Elsewhere, Ruhn and Flynn are with Lidia when she finds herself outside a school where her twin sons, Brann and Actaeon, are students. She wants to go in immediately, but the school director, Kagani, talks Lidia out of it and suggests they wait until the school day ends and involve the boys’ adoptive parents. Lidia agrees, then collapses in the hallway.
Back in the tactical room, the Ocean Queen turns her attention to Tharion without delay. The Viper Queen has put a bounty on his head, anywhere from three to five million gold marks depending on whether he comes in dead or alive. The River Queen is also threatening war unless Tharion is surrendered for execution.
When Tharion tries to bring up his family, the Ocean Queen dismisses his concern since the two queens only want Tharion. She sees no reason to refuse either of them. Things look bleak until Bryce walks through the door and announces that Tharion answers to her, claiming him on the spot.
House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 41
Bryce teleports onto the Ocean Queen’s ship, declares herself Queen of the Valbaran Fae, and reunites with Hunt. Hunt backs her up and vouches for Tharion in the process, but the Ocean Queen isn’t moved and keeps Bryce, Hunt, Tharion, and Baxian aboard as her involuntary guests.
Then Bryce reveals that the Asteri seeded a parasite in Midgard’s waters when they first invaded, which forces everyone to perform the Drop. Skip it, and you lose your powers and eventually die. The Ocean Queen admits that she’d always found it strange that her people still needed the Drop even deep underwater, but she never had an answer until now.
Bryce then outlines her plan. She wants to challenge the Asteri directly, bring Hel’s armies in as allies, and unite Ophion’s remaining forces. The Ocean Queen questions whether Hel can be trusted, but Hunt sides with Bryce.
Turning to the next step of her plan, Bryce says she needs to reach Avallen to search its archives. The Ocean Queen objects to playing ferry, but Bryce calls her out for stalling. The Ocean Queen then proposes using the Horn to evacuate people to the Fae homeworld and seal the passage behind them for good.
Bryce refuses. She didn’t come back to abandon Midgard so a chosen few could escape, and she calls the Ocean Queen a coward to her face. The Ocean Queen is furious but agrees to take them to Avallen. Her only condition is that if Bryce’s plan falls apart, Bryce promises to bring as many of the mer through the gate as she can.
House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 42
Bryce reunites with Hunt, Tharion, Baxian, and eventually Ruhn aboard the ship. Ruhn brings startling news that Lidia has woken up and revealed she has children, and whether Pollux fathered the children remains an open, troubling question.
Then Bryce spends about an hour walking everyone through what happened to her in the other world. She covers her escape with Azriel and Nesta, what she discovered about the Asteri’s parasites corrupting Midgard’s water supply, how she claimed Silene’s power, and how she took Truth-Teller from Azriel. She leaves out anything involving the Mask and the Trove.
After hearing what the others went through while she was away, Bryce slips into the hallway, unable to hold it together. Hunt follows her, and they have a raw, tense exchange. He blames himself for everything that happened, and she insists the Asteri are the only ones responsible. The conversation gets briefly sharp before Bryce and Hunt both let it go without really resolving anything.
The group has set their sights on Avallen, where Bryce believes the Archives hold information about a portal that could be used to destroy the Asteri. When Hunt questions whether King Morven will actually let the group in, Bryce pulls out the Autumn King’s notebook, using his secrets as leverage.
House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 43
Lidia meets her twin sons for the first time in fifteen years in Director Kagani’s office, with their mer foster fathers, Davit and Renki, present. Brann is warm toward her, but Actaeon is cold and hostile, accusing Lidia of serving the Asteri and killing rebels. The argument between the brothers escalates until Director Kagani intervenes and ends the meeting. Lidia says her goodbyes and slips into the hallway before she falls apart.
Renki follows Lidia into the hallway, apologizes for how the meeting went, and fills her in on who Brann and Actaeon have become. He reassures her that Actaeon’s anger isn’t the whole picture, hands her his contact information, and promises to help Actaeon come around over time.
Before Lidia can catch her breath, a messenger delivers a summons from the Ocean Queen. The queen is furious that Lidia brought high-profile fugitives aboard the city-ship and put the operation at risk. She orders Lidia to leave the following day and return to her post.
In the hallway, Lidia crosses paths with Ruhn. She gives him short, flat answers about her reunion with Brann and Actaeon. When Ruhn tries to get her to open up, Lidia calls him out for only wanting to listen now that he knows her tragic backstory. They argue, and she shuts the door in his face.
House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 44
Ithan is helping Jesiba pack artifacts when she receives a phone call and has him take the Godslayer Rifle from the wall. She leads him to a packed stone chamber, where the Astronomer confronts Ithan and demands the return of what Ithan took. Before Ithan can respond, Queen Hypaxia Enador intervenes and shuts the Astronomer down, stating that the Astronomer has no claim over the Fendyr heir.
On the Ocean Queen’s ship, the group discusses their arrival on Avallen. Flynn warns that Morven is dangerous and not to be underestimated. Ruhn explains the restrictions on the archives and the Cave of Princes, including that women are barred from both locations. Bryce says she wants to visit the cave because she thinks it holds information about the Starsword. They decide to split up between the two locations.
Lidia then announces that she’s joining the group, convinced that stopping the Asteri’s new pilotless mech-suits is a lost cause.
After dinner, Bryce and Lidia meet with the sprites Sasa and Rithi to report that Queen Irithys has escaped, but no one knows where she is. They ask the sprites to find her and bring her into the fight against the Asteri, and the sprites agree without hesitation. Later, alone with Hunt, Bryce admits she has no real plan for handling Morven beyond offering him the Autumn King’s notes.
House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 45
The Astronomer threatens legal consequences over the missing wolf, but Hypaxia points out that the wolf was never legally enslaved. Jesiba pays the ten-million-gold-mark fine without flinching.
Hypaxia then reveals her own crisis. Morganthia Dragas overthrew Hypaxia, seized her crown, and ordered her execution. To survive, Hypaxia pledged loyalty to the House of Flame and Shadow.
Meanwhile, Lidia meets her sons before leaving on a potentially fatal mission. She tells them how dangerous things are, leaves them a ruby ring, and says goodbye. Actaeon is cold and resentful. Brann is warmer, and Brann’s parting words are the only kindness Lidia receives.
Back at the House, Hypaxia admits she surrendered her crown rather than fight for it. Jesiba tears into Hypaxia, reveals that she’s second in command of the entire House, and then sends Hypaxia off to swear her oaths at the Black Dock before sunrise.
Alone with Ithan, Jesiba reveals that Apollion transformed her centuries ago, so she’s spent years paying the Astronomer to find a way to free her soul from Apollion’s grip. She also tells Ithan that the Asteri bred the Fendyr wolf line for their own purposes, that Micah eliminated Danika once Danika grew too powerful, and that the Asteri are keeping Connor’s soul because of what Connor means to Bryce and Ithan.
Jesiba then tells Ithan that Hypaxia has finished her vows and is waiting for him in the morgue with Sigrid’s body.
House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 46
The group gathers on the Depth Charger just outside the wall of mist surrounding Avallen. Commander Sendes tells them the ship can go no further because an invisible barrier blocks passage beneath the water. He explains that the mist itself appears to be something the world produced on its own, not the result of any magic cast by hand.
When the question of how to get through comes up, Ruhn tells Bryce that the Starsword is essentially a key. Bryce draws the sword, and a triangular opening appears in the mist. A white boat then sails out through the opening with its prow carved in the shape of a stag. A voice from the boat welcomes Bryce by name.
Everyone boards, and the boat begins to move. Tharion was supposed to stay behind, but he throws himself over the ship’s railing at the last second and lands in the boat. Flynn follows him. Commander Sendes calls out from the rail that the Ocean Queen will kill Tharion, but the boat is already swallowed by the mist, and any consequences for Tharion will have to wait until the group reaches the other side.
House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 47
Ithan is in a morgue with Jesiba and Hypaxia, where they’re preparing to resurrect Sigrid’s decapitated body. Hypaxia looks drained from recently swearing allegiance to the House. She explains that they need to physically reattach Sigrid’s head before anything else, after which a firstlight injection will complete the healing. Hypaxia then starts the ritual by chanting.
Meanwhile, Hunt’s group arrives by boat at the castle of Fae King Morven. The realm is gloomy and old-fashioned, nothing like the group expected. Tharion has tagged along despite defying the Ocean Queen’s orders, a decision that puts everyone on edge.
The audience with Morven goes sideways fast. He dismisses Ruhn as disowned, takes a shot at Bryce for being female, and looks down on Hunt as a Fallen angel. Bryce fires back with sarcasm, and Flynn tries to use his standing as his father’s heir. Morven responds by bringing out two powerful guards known as the Murder Twins. Between the twins stands a Fae woman named Sathia, who turns out to be Flynn’s sister.
House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 48
Flynn’s sister Sathia is held by two Fae lords known as the Murder Twins. Morven says he’s been sheltering Valbaran Fae refugees, but he requires any unwed women to marry before granting them protection. Sathia has refused, and Morven threatens to send her back to Lunathion, where the Asteri want Sathia’s entire family detained because of Flynn’s involvement in Ruhn’s escape.
While that confrontation plays out, the Murder Twins attempt to slip into the minds of Bryce’s group, but Bryce blocks them with a psychic barrier of starlight while the others hold their own.
Then Bryce asserts her right as a Starborn Princess to access the Avallen Archives and the Cave of Princes. She draws both the Starsword and a mysterious dagger, and their combined power clearly rattles Morven. She sweetens the negotiation by offering Morven the Autumn King’s private journal, and Morven concedes on the archives.
Bryce also pushes for Sathia’s release from the marriage ultimatum so Sathia can leave with the group. Morven refuses to accept Flynn as Sathia’s chaperone, and the standoff stalls until Tharion steps in and offers to marry Sathia himself.
Elsewhere, Hypaxia finishes a grueling hours-long ritual to resurrect Sigrid. Sigrid sits up but isn’t breathing, and Sigrid’s eyes burn with an unnatural green glow. Jesiba recognizes that Sigrid has become a Reaper.
House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 49
Tharion agrees to marry Sathia to spare her from a forced match with one of King Morven’s Murder Twins. Flynn warns him that Fae marriages are permanent and that walking away would leave Sathia socially ruined among her people. Tharion goes through with the marriage anyway, and Morven immediately summons a priestess to make it official.
Elsewhere, Ithan and Hypaxia learn that Sigrid has become a Reaper. The Under-King appears and explains that because Sigrid never received a proper burial rite, her soul was his to claim. He had offered her a choice, presenting his deal as freedom compared to what Hypaxia was offering, and Sigrid accepted. Before leaving, Sigrid tells Ithan that he killed her and that she won’t forget it.
Shaken, Ithan urges Hypaxia to find a way to undo it. Hypaxia says there might be a solution involving thunderbird lightning, which could give Sigrid another chance to choose differently. The only viable source is Sofie, a thunderbird who died some time ago but whose body may still hold enough power to make it work.
Jesiba leaves to track down the body and returns thirty minutes later with mixed news. She knows where Sofie’s body is, but retrieving it won’t be easy because the Stag King on Avallen has it in his possession.
House of Flame and Shadow Chapter 50
The group heads to the Avallen Archives, where Bryce opens the sealed lead doors and they begin searching the card catalog for anything related to the blades or the island’s history. Declan finds old maps revealing that during the First Wars, the waters around Avallen were filled with islands that vanished within a century. The group links the discovery to Bryce’s knowledge that Fae strongholds lost surrounding land around the time the Asteri arrived, and she instructs the archives team to keep digging. Hours of searching turn up nothing else useful.
At dinner, away from Morven’s court, the group eats alone. Baxian asks Lidia how long she’s been a spy. She sidesteps the question, and Baxian shares that meeting his mate Danika was what drew him to the cause. When Hunt and Baxian thank Lidia for saving them, Lidia tells the two males that if they manage to kill the Asteri, it will settle the debt between them.
Back in their room, Bryce admits to Hunt that she fears they won’t find what they need in time. Hunt reassures her but confesses that he doesn’t know if he can live with making decisions that get people killed again. Bryce talks him through it. They end up in bed together, and afterward, they discover something unexpected. Bryce and Hunt have exchanged powers.
