Heir of Fire Chapters 59–68 Summary
This Sarah J. Maas Heir of Fire chapter summary contains full spoilers.
Heir of Fire Chapter 59
Celaena and Rowan arrive in Doranelle and are brought before Maeve in her palace. Rather than give Maeve what she wants upfront, Celaena demands answers first. Maeve obliges, up to a point.
Maeve says the Wyrdkeys can never be destroyed, only placed back into the gate, and even she never figured out how to do that. She also confirms that fire and light work against the Valg princes, though back in Adarlan, where magic is locked away, the only real option is to sever the collar by cutting off the head.
Additionally, Maeve reveals a surprising piece of history. The mark on Celaena’s brow was originally the bastard’s mark, carried by unclaimed children, and Brannon himself was a nobody before Mala chose him.
The conversation turns dangerous when it shifts to the third Wyrdkey. Celaena denies knowing where it is, but Maeve turns to Rowan and compels him to tell the truth. Rowan can’t stop himself from admitting that Celaena does know.
Maeve orders Rowan’s companions to seize and whip him while she waits for Celaena to break. Rowan endures the punishment and manages to look at Celaena long enough to tell her not to speak. That defiance finally pushes Celaena over the edge, and she unleashes her fire magic on the entire room.
Heir of Fire Chapter 60
Doranelle burns under magical wildfire as Celaena confronts Maeve with everything she has pieced together. Maeve killed Athril, Brannon took the Wyrdkeys from her, and Maeve has spent thousands of years avoiding Brannon’s heirs out of fear. To drive the point home, Celaena pulls back every flame at once and leaves the city in complete darkness.
Celaena refuses to give up Goldryn and opens her mind to show Maeve a vision of Maeve ruling as an immortal, godlike queen who has reshaped the world with the Wyrdkeys. The vision rattles Maeve.
Then Celaena produces Athril’s ring. She found it hidden inside Goldryn’s scabbard weeks earlier and kept it quiet, saving it for exactly that moment. She offers the ring in exchange for Rowan’s release from his blood oath. Maeve agrees, dissolves the oath, and frees Rowan.
Before Celaena can object, Rowan drops to his knees and swears a new blood oath to her. Celaena resists at first but eventually relents. They exchange blood, the oath binds them, and Maeve dismisses them both before vanishing.
Celaena and Rowan leave Doranelle that night. The next morning, Celaena asks Rowan to tattoo memorial markings over her scars. As Rowan works, Celaena speaks aloud prayers she’d carried for a decade, grieving her parents, her uncle, Marion, Nehemia, and Sam. It’s the first time Celaena has truly mourned them, and the grief she buried for so long is finally released.
Heir of Fire Chapter 61
The War Games open with all three Ironteeth Clans taking to the skies. Manon leads the Blackbeaks toward the Blueblood nest first and splits her forces so part of the coven doubles back to hold the Blackbeak nest against the Yellowlegs. The Thirteen reach the Blueblood egg quickly, and the home guard surrenders it without much of a fight. The Blackbeaks regroup and trap the combined Blueblood and Yellowlegs forces between two wings of their host.
Manon then turns toward the Yellowlegs nest. The Thirteen fragment the defenders into disorder, and the Blackbeaks push through the gap. Just as the nest comes within reach, Petrah appears and dives straight for it. Iskra intercepts Petrah midair, and the two heirs clash as their wyverns lock together.
Iskra’s wyvern clamps its jaws around Keelie’s neck, and Manon orders Abraxos to take the unguarded egg while everyone is distracted, but Abraxos refuses. Iskra commands her wyvern to release Keelie, and the injured wyvern drops toward the canyon below with Petrah unconscious and dangling from the saddle.
Petrah’s mother screams from the mountainside. Abraxos dives. As Manon closes in, she sees Keelie is still alive, spending what little strength she has left to steady the fall for Petrah’s sake. Abraxos is too small to break Keelie’s descent, but they have a chance to pull Petrah free if they time it right. Keelie steadies herself one last time, and Manon unbuckles her harness and leaps from Abraxos toward Keelie.
Heir of Fire Chapter 62
Manon saves Petrah during the War Games by cutting Petrah free from her dying wyvern, Keelie, and leaping off the saddle mid-canyon. Abraxos swoops in and catches both riders. Keelie crashes into the canyon floor and doesn’t survive.
The Blackbeaks win the Games, and Manon is named Wing Leader. Her grandmother is furious that Manon showed mercy to a rival and beats her for it that night. Manon refuses to apologize.
At the victory celebration, Manon’s grandmother produces a captured Crochan witch as a gift and orders Manon to kill the prisoner and take her red cloak.
The Crochan uses her final moments to address the entire room. She declares that Manon sits at the top of the Crochans’ kill list. She then says the Crochans pity the Ironteeth because they were shaped into cruelty rather than born with it, and Manon’s mercy toward Petrah proves something in her resists that fate. Manon kills the Crochan and takes the cloak.
Later, Manon leaves the celebration and flies with Abraxos to a remote mountain peak. Sitting beside him under the night sky, she realizes she never learned the Crochan’s name or anything about who the witch was. For the first time, Manon feels something close to real regret, and the moment leaves her with a strange, unfamiliar awareness of her own mortality.
Heir of Fire Chapter 63
Chaol meets Aedion on the rooftop of Celaena’s apartment. He had planned to tell Aedion about the king’s spell but held back, still unsure how Aedion would use that information. Before Chaol leaves, Aedion asks if Chaol has any message for Celaena. Chaol tells Aedion to say they barely spoke and that everyone is fine, then walks away.
Sorscha lies awake next to a sleeping Dorian, uneasy about what’s coming. She has made peace with the idea that she could never be queen, but she isn’t ready to let go of what they share just yet.
Over the following two days, Chaol and Aedion arrange for Dorian and Sorscha to leave the castle. The plan is for the couple to depart the next morning alongside Chaol as he heads for Anielle, using his farewell as cover. Chaol also submits his formal recommendation for a new captain of the guard.
Then the king summons Chaol to his private council chamber. Chaol arrives to find Aedion already there, surrounded by unfamiliar guards, and the king grinning widely.
Dorian hears about the summons almost immediately and runs to Sorscha, urging her that they need to leave now. Before they can go anywhere, Amithy appears in the doorway with unfamiliar guards and tells Dorian and Sorscha that the king wants to see them both at once.
Heir of Fire Chapter 64
The king summons Aedion, Chaol, Dorian, and Sorscha to the council room to reveal that his spies have been watching each of them. He confronts Aedion about his secret movements through Rifthold and his closeness with Chaol, then turns on Dorian for allegedly planning to run away with Sorscha.
To force a confession, the king orders Sorscha to be forced to her knees with a sword at her neck. Dorian tries to negotiate her safety but admits he doesn’t know why Aedion and Chaol were meeting. The king reveals that a spy has been passing intelligence to rebel leaders, though he clearly doesn’t know exactly who’s responsible.
Before Chaol can step forward, Aedion takes the fall. He claims he’s the spy, invents a story about Chaol blackmailing him for information, and openly declares his loyalty to his queen before taunting the king to his face. The guards shackle Aedion, and the king announces he’ll delay the execution to use him as bait, hoping to draw Aelin back to Rifthold.
The king then turns to Sorscha. She admits she’s been a rebel spy for years and tells Dorian she loves him. Dorian drops to his knees and begs his father to spare her, offering anything. The king refuses and orders Sorscha’s execution on the spot. Dorian screams as he tries to reach her.
Heir of Fire Chapter 65
Sorscha is executed in front of the court. Chaol draws his sword and refuses the king’s command to go home, declaring that Dorian is the rightful ruler and that a queen in the north will keep defeating him because she stands for something the king can never destroy. The king orders Chaol and Dorian killed.
Dorian reveals his magic for the first time. He freezes a crossbow bolt in midair before it reaches Chaol and drives the king back with ice and wind. Dorian tells Chaol to flee and return one day to raze the castle. Chaol tells Dorian he loves him, then runs while Dorian stays behind to hold his father off.
Meanwhile, Aedion is being taken to the dungeons in chains. He had stepped forward voluntarily to draw attention away from Chaol, out of loyalty and an unwillingness to face Aelin if Chaol died for them.
Dorian fights until he’s spent. The king pins Dorian to the floor and locks a Wyrdstone collar around his throat. Dorian loses consciousness as he reaches toward Sorscha’s body.
Chaol escapes through a secret tunnel with Fleetfoot, stopping at a hidden tomb to collect a sacred sword, some gold, and a satchel of magic books. He reaches a safe house where Ren is waiting. After hearing what happened, Ren reveals that Sorscha had been his informant. Chaol and Ren agree to find a way to free Aedion and Dorian.
Heir of Fire Chapter 66
Manon’s grandmother tells her that the king has ordered her to take half the host south to Morath to serve the duke, while the remaining witches stay under Iskra’s command to keep watch over the north.
When Manon asks where her grandmother will be, her grandmother snaps at her. Manon recovers by framing the question as concern about being separated, but her grandmother calls her out as a liar. Her grandmother explains she’ll stay behind for now and come to Morath in the summer. The covens fly out the next day.
The next night, Manon leads the host south through the dark, keeping close to the mountainside so anyone below can’t get a clear count of their numbers. Asterin and Sorrel ride at her sides. The plan is to cut across Oakwald where it meets Morath’s mountains, then push up past the cloud line and complete the journey out of sight.
Heir of Fire Chapter 67
A cloaked man stands on a dock in the Rifthold slums at dawn. He pulls out a sword with an eagle pommel, thinks about what it once meant, and then throws the weapon into the Avery River, where it vanishes beneath the water. At his side rests a different blade, one that belonged to an ancient king. The man has lost his name and carries only the titles traitor and oathbreaker, but he’s determined to restore the world that old blade once stood for, whatever it costs him.
Heir of Fire Chapter 68
Celaena and Rowan spend the two-week walk to a Wendlyn port arguing about her next move. Rowan thinks sailing back to Adarlan alone is reckless and wants her to go to Varese with him to find her mother’s mortal relatives instead. Celaena refuses. She insists she’s going back as Celaena, not as Aelin, and she lays out her plan to get the Wyrdkey from Arobynn, find the captain, and then head north to build her court and raise an army.
At the docks, Celaena and Rowan say their goodbyes. Rowan tells her he’ll head back to help repair Mistward. Before she boards, Celaena asks what Rowan had actually prayed for before they went into Doranelle. Rowan explains that his first prayer was for her survival. He admits that his second prayer was something more personal, and Celaena understands the rest without him saying it.
Celaena boards the ship as night falls, and once they’re out to sea, Rowan flies past in hawk form and brushes his wing against her cheek one last time before he turns back to shore.
Out on the open water, Celaena traces the scar on her palm from the oath she made to Nehemia. She’s determined to reclaim the Wyrdkeys, destroy the king, and free her people, no matter how long it takes. At last, Celaena fully owns who she is as Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, Queen of Terrasen, and “she would not be afraid.”
