Heir of Fire Chapters 13–24 Summary

This Sarah J. Maas Heir of Fire chapter summary contains full spoilers.

Heir of Fire Chapter 13

Rowan leads Celaena out of the fortress and up through the forest to the ruins of an old temple on a high ridge. He orders her to shift into her Fae form, but she refuses, saying she has no control over it. He attacks without warning, sweeps her off her feet, and pins her to the ground.

When Celaena still won’t shift, Rowan calls her a coward and tells her she’s spent ten years running while innocent people were slaughtered. The accusation breaks something in her, and she stops fighting entirely, lying still beneath him.

Afterward, Rowan pulls Celaena to her feet, and they move on. They don’t head back toward the fortress. Instead, they go deeper into the foothills, where they reach a field of ancient burial mounds.

Rowan tells Celaena that if she walks through the field alone and makes it to the other side, he’ll take her to Doranelle whenever she wants. He leaves her at the entrance to the inner circle, where the oldest barrow sits crumbling and open, its doorway nothing but darkness.

Celaena knows Rowan is using her impatience against her, expecting her to run. She doesn’t. She steps forward onto the dead grass.

Heir of Fire Chapter 14

Celaena crosses a field of barrows while Rowan watches nearby. She notices a wight lurking in one of the mounds but keeps moving. As she nears the central mound, she spots a strikingly beautiful man standing behind it, a dark torque at his throat. The instant she sees him, everything goes black.

Trapped inside the darkness, Celaena hears something breathing close behind her and tries to run, but there’s nowhere to go. The creature drags her into her worst memories, beginning with her parents’ murders and then Nehemia’s mutilated body. She manages to elbow it and break free, then sprints back across the field toward Rowan, completely undone.

Celaena wakes up in the forest, where Rowan tells her flatly that she failed. He admits the creature was nothing he’d ever seen before, not a wight or anything else he could name. Celaena refuses to go into detail about what happened, only saying the darkness forced her through her worst memories. She demands to return to the fortress, and Rowan walks her back without much argument.

Back at Mistward, Rowan shows Celaena to the female baths, tells her to be ready in the kitchens at first light, and leaves.

Heir of Fire Chapter 15

Chaol’s father arrives twenty minutes late to their meeting and immediately pressures Chaol to return to Anielle as promised. Chaol refuses to leave until he finds a proper replacement as Captain of the Guard. His father reveals that he has deliberately kept the king in the dark about Chaol’s planned departure as leverage. Chaol reiterates that he won’t leave until he finds a replacement.

In reality, Chaol has been showing up at Aedion’s tavern parties, trying to catch the general slipping away somewhere suspicious, but he keeps missing him. Chaol is also planning to track down the rebel group Celaena once investigated, hoping they can help break the king’s suppression of magic and support Dorian.

Eventually, Chaol and his father negotiate until Chaol agrees to two months, though his father frames the deal as a debt owed rather than a straightforward agreement.

Meanwhile, Sorscha is summoned to treat Dorian’s injuries. She has carried feelings for Dorian since they were teenagers, and treating his split lip up close doesn’t help. Dorian draws her into conversation and asks where she comes from. Sorscha reveals that soldiers destroyed her village and killed her parents during Rifthold’s immigrant purge. Dorian is clearly shaken and apologizes, though she insists it wasn’t his fault.

The next morning, a messenger arrives asking for the name of Sorscha’s village. Dorian wants it added to his personal map of the continent.

Heir of Fire Chapter 16

Manon and the Thirteen are at the Omega training facility, where the three Ironteeth Clans are competing to claim the best wyvern mounts. In the mess hall, Iskra cuts in line and tries to unsettle Manon by questioning whether the Thirteen will embarrass themselves on their first flight. Manon shuts Iskra down and walks away.

Later, Manon leads the Thirteen off a cliff face in a free-fall called the Crossing, a plunge between two mountain peaks that ends only when the wyverns pull out of the dive. Manon goes first, the rest follow in tight formation, and they all make it through into open sky. The triumph feels sweeter when Manon spots that the Yellowlegs coven has already cleared out rather than watch her succeed.

That evening, Manon’s grandmother summons her privately, praises her leadership, and issues a directive to win the upcoming war games and become Wing Leader of all the Ironteeth armies. Once the Matrons eventually turn on each other, Manon must already be in command.

Before dismissing Manon, Mother Blackbeak warns her not to get careless with her own safety, pointing to the murder of Baba Yellowlegs as proof that even the most powerful witches can be caught off guard.

Heir of Fire Chapter 17

Celaena wakes up battered from the uncontrolled shifting she forced on herself the day before. At dawn, she heads to the kitchen, where Emrys and Luca are shocked by how bad she looks. Malakai passes through, sizes her up, and tells her plainly not to make more work for Emrys. Celaena accepts it without much reaction, and the moment passes.

Training goes nowhere. Rowan tells Celaena to shift, but she refuses, and he offers nothing in return. They spend the entire day sitting exposed on the mountainside while Celaena tries and fails to get her magic to respond. A storm moves in, and Rowan keeps her out in it well past the point of comfort before finally letting her go back inside.

That night, Celaena goes to the kitchens for food and finds the whole settlement gathered there for stories by the fire. She hangs back in the stairwell, eats, and watches as Emrys tells a faerie tale that unsettles the room. Before Celaena slips away, she notices a hawk watching silently from the kitchen doorway and realizes it’s Rowan.

When the story ends, Emrys invites Celaena to share something from her homeland. Celaena turns him down and goes back to her room. She no longer feels she has any right to those stories. What she remembers of Terrasen has broken apart into fragments she cannot reassemble.

Heir of Fire Chapter 18

Dorian has been using sparring injuries as an excuse to visit Sorscha in the healers’ catacombs. During one visit, Sorscha admits she has pieced together that someone covered up details about the creature attacks from months ago. Dorian confirms that two creatures were involved and warns that his father would punish anyone connected to the events.

When the conversation shifts to what the king might do to Celaena and Chaol, Dorian loses control, and his magic bursts outward, shattering glass and coating the floor in ice. Sorscha crouches under the table until it passes.

Once it’s over, Sorscha calmly tells Dorian she won’t say anything, and together they tip over the worktable to make it look like an ordinary accident. She promises to look into whether there’s a way to suppress his magic, and when other healers arrive to check on the noise, their cover story holds.

Sorscha is then called in by her supervisor Amithy, who reprimands her for the mess and warns her not to get too close to Dorian. Sorscha listens quietly and leaves.

Elsewhere, Chaol secretly follows Aedion, who slips out of a tavern party unnoticed. Aedion meets a cloaked stranger and is led to a heavily guarded building in the slums. Chaol recognizes the setup as a rebel hideout. Before Chaol can act, someone presses a dagger to his side.

Heir of Fire Chapter 19

Chaol is captured by rebel sentries and brought before Aedion, Murtagh, and Ren Allsbrook, a scarred young man Chaol recognizes from a previous run-in. Before the situation escalates, Chaol notices Aedion’s ring. Aedion admits freely that the ring is a fake replica of the king’s control rings. He sensed something wrong with the real ring, had a copy made, and dropped the original into the sea. Aedion has been deceiving the king the entire time.

Aedion gives Chaol a simple choice. Chaol can speak willingly, or he’ll be tortured and killed either way.

Out of options, Chaol makes a desperate gamble and reveals to Aedion that Aelin Galathynius is alive. Ren beats him anyway, partly to test whether he will break, but Chaol refuses to speak to anyone except Aedion. Aedion eventually clears the room, and the two end up alone on a dock by the river.

There, Chaol lays out the whole story. Aelin spent years hiding as the assassin Celaena Sardothien, survived a year in Endovier, served as the King’s Champion, and was sent to Wendlyn for her safety. Aedion’s first question is whether she’s coming back. Chaol says he honestly doesn’t know.

Both men weigh whether to trust each other. Aedion asks about the king’s rings, and Chaol insists on striking a bargain before giving anything else up.

Heir of Fire Chapter 20

Celaena spends her first week at the fortress washing dishes and chopping wood, failing every day to shift into her Fae form. She keeps mostly to herself. Luca tries to reach out, hinting that he’s there if she ever wants to talk. She shuts him down, and he doesn’t push again.

Training with Rowan goes nowhere. When Celaena refuses to return to the barrows, he backs off but vents his frustration by making her chop wood whenever she’s in a foul mood.

On the eighth day, Celaena asks Rowan to show her how he shifts. He transforms into a hawk and back again so fast she can barely track it, clothes and weapons included. She tries to do the same and gets nothing.

The session turns ugly fast. When Celaena mocks the queen, Rowan grabs her tongue between his fingers to shut her up. She bites down and reaches for his daggers, but he shoves her against a tree and clamps his teeth on her neck, hard enough to draw blood.

Something changes in Celaena at that. She pushes Rowan off, and the transformation finally tears through her. She ends up roaring at him in full Fae form, canines bared.

Heir of Fire Chapter 21

After Rowan bites Celaena to force her into her Fae form, she shifts, and her fire magic surges wildly out of control. Rowan pulls the air from her lungs to smother the flames. Celaena collapses and shifts back to her mortal form.

When Rowan pushes Celaena to shift again, she loses herself in grief for Nehemia and can’t focus. Rowan goes further and tells Celaena the world would’ve been better off if she’d died ten years ago. Celaena announces she’s leaving and walks out.

Rowan intercepts Celaena on the trail and accuses her of running from hardship. Celaena snaps back that she’s fighting to honor a vow she made to save a friend’s kingdom. Rowan pushes harder until Celaena breaks and screams that Nehemia is dead, and she’s stuck with a worthless life. Rowan lets her go.

Celaena walks until nightfall, carves crude weapons from branches, and shelters in a shallow cave. A storm rolls in just as she gets a fire going. She eats what little food she has and convinces herself she made the right choice by leaving. Celaena plans to follow an old road toward the plains come morning, then falls asleep. She’s jolted awake by a sudden silence.

Heir of Fire Chapter 22

Celaena is sheltering in a cave when the forest goes quiet, and a foul smell drifts in from outside. She slips out and spots three towering, inhuman figures near the entrance. Celaena recognizes them as skinwalkers. She tries to move quietly but eventually breaks into a full run.

In the dark, Celaena collides with Rowan. Rowan pulls her into a hollowed tree and tells her she must shift into her Fae form if she wants to survive, because mortal speed won’t be enough. She manages to shift just as the skinwalkers close in.

Rowan hands Celaena two daggers and tells her there’s a river nearby they can run for and that mortal weapons are useless against skinwalkers. Rowan uses his wind magic to send the creatures chasing a false trail, and they bolt for the cliff. A fourth skinwalker ambushes them on the way, but Rowan cuts it down without breaking stride.

Celaena and Rowan reach the edge and jump. Before they hit the water, Celaena turns and unleashes a blast of blue wildfire that burns the three pursuers to nothing.

On the riverbank, Rowan works to put out the fires spreading into the surrounding forest. Celaena and Rowan talk about the risks of burning through magic too fast. Then Rowan tells Celaena she’s not leaving and tosses her his dry cloak and jacket. They walk back to the fortress together.

Heir of Fire Chapter 23

The witches gather to pick their wyvern mounts, with each beast brought out one at a time for the covens to claim. Manon sets her eye on Titus, the biggest and most dangerous bull, but the other two heirs want him as well. Before Manon can act, Iskra shoves her off the platform, and she drops forty feet into the pit.

Manon survives, but Titus bears down on her. She draws her sword and tries to reach the gate, but Titus catches her with his tail and sends her skidding across the dirt. Manon ends up near the wall where a battered, scarred wyvern sits chained, used as a punching bag for the stronger bulls during training.

Instead of attacking Manon, the chained wyvern squares up against Titus. Manon cuts his chain, and the two wyverns fight. Against all odds, the smaller one kills Titus.

Manon claims the wyvern on the spot and names him Abraxos. Her grandmother is furious since Abraxos has never left the ground and nobody knows if he can fly. Asterin is publicly whipped for letting Manon fall into the pit, and Manon herself takes a beating for her choice of mount. She ignores all of it and decides to train Abraxos herself, convinced she saw something in him worth backing.

Heir of Fire Chapter 24

Chaol makes a deal with Aedion and the rebel faction, exchanging information about the king’s dark power for what they know about their queen. Together they sneak into Celaena’s old tomb, where Chaol reveals that Celaena is actually Aelin Galathynius, the lost queen of Terrasen, and shares what she uncovered about the king’s power.

What Chaol and Aedion don’t realize is that Dorian has been sneaking down to the tomb on his own and overhears the entire conversation. Dorian confronts them, furious at being shut out. Chaol tells Dorian the secrecy was partly to protect him and explains that the rebels might hold the key to freeing magic and saving his life. Dorian agrees to keep quiet but refuses to take part in any of it and leaves.

Aedion then slips out to meet Ren and his grandfather Murtaugh at the docks. They urge him to reveal where Aelin is, but Aedion refuses. Murtaugh delivers grim news that almost nothing remains of Terrasen’s old court, with only four members of the inner circle confirmed alive and the fate of a young girl named Elide still unknown. Aedion decides their best move for now is to reach out to two young lords in the coastal city of Suria and hold off on everything else.
