Crown of Midnight Chapter 51
Celaena arrives at the sewer tunnel and knows Archer is trapped by a closed grate. Before she can reach him, he attacks her from behind, and the two fight. Archer tries to justify Nehemia’s murder as something that had to be done to protect their shared cause, but Celaena refuses to listen. She eventually gains the upper hand and holds a blade to Archer’s throat.
Archer begs for his life and brings up Nehemia’s name, and something in that reaches Celaena. She sheathes the dagger and tells Archer to be gone from the city by morning. As Celaena walks away, Archer calls her a good woman, and she hears the smugness in his tone. She turns back, sees the triumph on his face, and kills him.
Crown of Midnight Chapter 52
Celaena kills Archer in the underground passage while Chaol watches. Back in Celaena’s chambers, a healer tends to Fleetfoot, then Dorian, then Chaol. Celaena sends Dorian away so she and Chaol can speak alone.
In that private moment, Celaena tells Chaol she has Fae blood through her great-grandmother, which gave her the ability to shift between human and Fae form. She lost that power when magic disappeared ten years ago. She also explains how she opened the portal using Wyrdmark spells in hopes of seeing Nehemia.
Celaena reveals that Archer was behind Nehemia’s assassination all along. Archer hired Grave while posing as Councilman Mullison, kidnapped Chaol to draw Celaena away, and planted the anonymous threat against Nehemia so that Celaena would blame Chaol for her death. Celaena no longer holds Chaol responsible but admits she cannot fully trust him or return to what they were before. She retreats into the passage and leaves Chaol alone.
Concerned about the danger Celaena faces at court if her Fae heritage is discovered, Chaol goes to his father and proposes sending her to Wendlyn on a mission to kill the royal family there. In exchange, Chaol agrees to resign as Captain and return home to Anielle. His father accepts the deal. What his father doesn’t know is that Wendlyn is the last Fae stronghold in the world, and getting Celaena there safely is all Chaol actually cares about.
Crown of Midnight Chapter 53
Celaena briefly tells Dorian about the portal and the Wyrdmarks, mentions someone in the tomb who might help him understand his power, and offers to take him there. Dorian thanks Celaena, and in that moment, she thinks Nehemia’s vision for a more just world might not be lost after all if someone like Dorian could one day lead it.
At the king’s council, Chaol proposes sending Celaena to Wendlyn to assassinate its king and crown prince and retrieve military intelligence. The king approves, secretly pleased that the plan also removes Celaena from Dorian’s orbit. While waiting for his Champion, the king thinks about the unsettling feeling that someone opened a portal the night before. He also reflects on Yellowlegs, who has disappeared, with her blood found in the ruined carnival wagon.
When the council brings Celaena in and explains the plan, she agrees without hesitation. The king tells Celaena she’ll leave the next day.
Once Celaena is alone, the reality hits her. She can’t fake the deaths of a king and his heir as she could with lesser targets, and she’s furious that Chaol acted without explanation. She goes to the tomb, where Elena tells Celaena the mission was Chaol’s way of getting her close to Doranelle and the Fae to protect her.
Celaena then raises something that has been gnawing at her. She wonders if Nehemia may have chosen her own death to force change. Elena neither confirms nor denies the idea and redirects Celaena to what matters. Celaena agrees. She’s going to Wendlyn.
Crown of Midnight Chapter 54
After the council meeting, Chaol avoids his father and Dorian as he tries to slip away. Dorian catches up and demands to know why Chaol is sending Celaena to Wendlyn. Chaol sticks to his cover story, claiming she’s become too unpredictable after the portal incident and needs to be out of the castle for everyone’s safety. He knows it’s a lie, but he lets Dorian believe it.
Part of Chaol even needs Dorian to be furious with him, because the angrier Dorian is, the easier it will be to eventually leave for Anielle without looking back. Dorian threatens that if anything happens to Celaena, Chaol will pay for it. Chaol tells Dorian that one of them needs to step up and actually lead, then walks away.
At dawn, Celaena goes to Nehemia’s grave before she sets sail. She kneels in the dirt and finally says everything she should’ve said when Nehemia was still alive.
Celaena admits she’s been a coward who kept running instead of fighting, and she promises to stop the king, to free Eyllwe, and to see Nehemia’s father get his crown back. She draws a dagger, cuts her palm, and presses her bleeding hand into the ground to seal the vow. She has no clear plan and no idea how long it’ll take, but she means every word of her promise.
Crown of Midnight Chapter 55
Dorian finds Celaena in her room packing for Wendlyn and asks if she was going to leave without saying goodbye. She asks Dorian to look after Fleetfoot while she’s gone, and he promises he will. Before he goes, she thanks him for his friendship and tells him she’ll come back for him.
At the docks, Chaol appears just before Celaena’s ship departs. She uses the little time she has to tell him what she’s learned about the Wyrdkeys and the threat the king poses. She gives Chaol her protective amulet and points him to the evidence she left in the tomb.
Celaena then whispers something in Chaol’s ear, something she says he’ll only understand later, and tells him it wouldn’t have changed how she feels about him. Chaol tells Celaena he loves her. She apologizes and boards the ship.
As the ship pulls away, Celaena watches Chaol on the dock until he’s no longer visible. The ship carries her away from Adarlan toward Wendlyn.
Crown of Midnight Chapter 56
Chaol stands on the docks long after Celaena’s ship has gone, turning the cryptic date she whispered to him over and over in his mind. He goes back to the castle and searches Celaena’s rooms, where he finds a collection of genealogy books and royal chronicles tucked away in the shadows of her desk.
The chronicle from ten years ago stops Chaol cold. The date Celaena gave him is the day the entire Galathynius royal family was killed, including the young princess Aelin, whose remains were never found.
Chaol digs into the genealogy books and follows Aelin’s mother’s bloodline back through Wendlyn, where he discovers that Aelin’s great‑grandmother was Mab, one of the ancient Fae Sister‑Queens. A poem scrawled in the margins of the family tree describes the Ashryver line as having vivid blue eyes ringed with gold, and the recognition hits him instantly. He has looked into those exact eyes countless times.
Celaena Sardothien is Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, the lost Queen of Terrasen. She also knows the secret behind the king’s power, and Chaol has just sent her straight to Wendlyn, to her mother’s people and to Queen Maeve of the Fae, her most formidable potential ally. Chaol sinks to his knees.
