Crown of Midnight Chapter 12
At the masquerade, Celaena arrives with Archer, who has brought her there to investigate a man named Davis. Archer explains that Davis has grown paranoid and secretive, and Archer suspects him of being a key figure in a group claiming loyalty to the exiled queen Aelin Galathynius. Archer doubts their loyalty, though, and believes the group is after influence and a ruler they can control. He then slips away to fulfill his obligations to Madame Clarisse, who oversees the party’s courtesan arrangements.
Celaena sneaks into Davis’s office. Most of what she finds is unremarkable, but on a bookshelf she discovers a book filled with Wyrdmarks, ancient symbols tied to a lost magical tradition. Inside the back cover, someone has written a strange riddle: “It is only with the eye that one can see rightly.” Celaena memorizes it and plans to ask Nehemia what it means.
Davis walks in before Celaena can leave. She plays the part of a weeping, jilted woman, but when Davis moves closer to escort her out, he pulls a dagger. Celaena disables him quickly, though the blade slices a shallow cut on her arm. The weapon is coated in gloriella, a paralytic poison Davis claims will keep her down until his guards can take her somewhere private. Celaena kills Davis with his own dagger and climbs out the window.
The gloriella takes hold of Celaena’s body as she runs back toward the castle. She enters through the barracks, reaches Chaol’s office, and manages to get out the name of the poison before collapsing.
Crown of Midnight Chapter 13
Bloodied and barely conscious, Celaena shows up at Chaol’s office. Chaol panics, cuts open her dress expecting stab wounds, and realizes she’s been poisoned with gloriella instead. With the help of a trusted guard, he gets her back to her rooms, brings in healers, and stays with her through the night while she recovers.
Once Celaena is stable, Chaol sends men into the city to find out what happened. The men return with news that a businessman named Davis was found dead, apparently killed by his own weapon. Chaol pieces it together and realizes Celaena had been caught snooping in Davis’s office and was drugged during the encounter.
When Celaena wakes, Chaol confronts her. He tells her he won’t report anything to the king, that his men will stay quiet, and that he already burned the dress to get rid of the evidence. He makes it very clear that if she ever puts him through something like that again, she’ll end up in the dungeons.
Crown of Midnight Chapter 14
Celaena goes to the royal library, armed and on edge after a disturbing encounter there a few nights earlier. She wants to identify what the strange creature had been after. After hours of searching the outer walls, she finds a dark red tapestry in the back corner that conceals a hidden door and a spiral staircase. She heads down and discovers the lower level contains only old castle records.
Deeper inside, Celaena finds a second staircase, its walls carved with ancient Fae imagery. At the bottom, she reaches a long hallway with a single iron door that has no keyhole. She slides a dagger underneath and uses the reflection to peer into the darkness beyond. Two pale, glinting eyes flash for an instant. Celaena convinces herself it was a rat, but the encounter rattles her. She leaves, resolved to return better prepared, and suspects the Wyrdmarks connect to whatever sealed that door.
Meanwhile, Dorian jolts awake from a nightmare and finds his room inexplicably freezing. He thinks he sees a ring of frost on the couch where he had been sleeping, but it vanishes before he can get a proper look.
Crown of Midnight Chapter 15
At dinner in the Great Hall, Celaena joins the other guests to hear the celebrated singer Rena Goldsmith perform. Chaol sits beside her with several of his men. Rena dedicates a song about a Fae woman with immense power to the royal family, and Celaena is moved to tears. Chaol takes her hand under the table, and they share a brief but tender moment.
From the royal table, Dorian watches Celaena and Chaol and realizes she has never looked at him the way she looks at Chaol. He makes peace with that and decides to let his feelings for her go.
Later that night, the king seizes Rena and has her brought to a dungeon, where her companion has already been executed. He condemns her for singing about magic, which is a capital offense. Rena explains that she devoted a decade to earning enough fame to get inside the castle, all so she could sing those forbidden songs in front of him as a deliberate act of defiance.
As the executioner prepares to strike, Rena names the people she loved who died under the king’s persecution, and the ax falls before she finishes.
Crown of Midnight Chapter 16
Nehemia challenges Celaena’s role as the King’s Champion over breakfast, saying she can no longer defend their friendship to her parents. Celaena confesses she hasn’t actually killed anyone on the king’s list. She’s been staging their deaths and helping them disappear. She also explains her arrangement with Archer, who’s feeding her information about the king’s true enemies in exchange for a clean disappearance.
Afterward, Celaena takes Nehemia to the secret tomb, where Nehemia studies the star patterns on the floor, identifies them as constellations, and follows the trail to a carved eye on the wall with a small opening in its center. The catch is that it’s only visible when she stands on the stag constellation. Celaena looks through it but sees nothing, just a blank wall, and Mort refuses to explain what it means.
Back upstairs, Celaena wonders if the riddle from Davis’s book points to her amulet or the eye in the tomb, but Nehemia dismisses both ideas as coincidence. They agree to start Wyrdmark lessons the next morning.
A letter from Archer arrives with names tied to Davis and his movement, so Celaena spends the day tracking them in the city but comes up empty.
Back at the castle, a note from Chaol delivers the unwelcome news that Celaena has guard duty at the royal ball that night.
Crown of Midnight Chapter 17
Chaol is posted inside the royal ball while Celaena keeps watch outside on the patio. When he goes to check on her, he finds that she has slipped away and is waltzing alone in the garden. Instead of scolding her, he asks her to dance, and they share a quiet, unspoken moment in the moonlight.
Dorian spots Celaena and Chaol from a ballroom window. Nehemia joins him and tells him to leave them be, noting that she and Dorian carry burdens and responsibilities that people like Chaol and Celaena will never have to bear. Dorian says he has already made peace with moving on.
Nehemia then tells Dorian that Roland has been pressuring her to secure her father’s backing for expanding the Calaculla labor camp, and that a council vote is scheduled for the next day. She asks Dorian to stand against it. He says he can’t, so she challenges him directly, asking whether he would act if Celaena were the one suffering in those camps instead of thousands of nameless strangers.
Before leaving, Nehemia places her hand on Dorian’s chest and tells him he has a power inside him that hasn’t yet woken and that she’ll be there when it does. For the first time, Dorian feels something deep inside himself shift.
Crown of Midnight Chapter 18
Celaena visits Archer at his townhouse to ask for details about the rebel movement’s plans. He stalls and asks for more time, but she gives him six days and makes it clear her next visit won’t be so civil.
Across the castle, Dorian sits through a council meeting where Roland pitches an expansion of the slave camp at Calaculla. Dorian speaks out against the proposal, votes no, and walks out. He wanders into a forgotten hallway and punches the wall in frustration. The stone fractures, cracks spread outward, and a nearby window shatters.
When Dorian looks at his hand, he doesn’t have a single scratch, and he notices the broken glass has fallen in a wide ring around him, leaving the spot where he crouched completely clean. The implication hits hard enough that he drops to his knees and is sick.
That evening, Celaena spends time with Chaol in his rooms. He slips off to the kitchens to steal chocolate cake for her, and afterward they settle on the couch together until he falls asleep. Celaena sits with her feelings for him for a moment before slipping out.
On her way back to her own rooms, Celaena finds Dorian sitting on the hallway floor. He claims he was looking for Nehemia, deflects her concern, and leaves without saying what’s actually wrong.
Crown of Midnight Chapter 19
Chaol meets with the king, who tells him someone has made an anonymous threat against Nehemia. The king wants her quietly watched but insists the matter stay secret, even from Nehemia herself. Chaol agrees.
Meanwhile, Dorian spends the morning sparring, unable to shake the possibility that he might have magic. Roland finds him and apologizes for pushing the labor camp vote the day before, claiming he called it off. Dorian remains skeptical but starts to think Roland might be worth keeping close as a counterweight to their fathers.
That afternoon, a carnival arrives at the castle. Chaol, Celaena, and Dorian wander through it together and end up at the last wagon, where an old woman named Baba Yellowlegs announces herself as an Ironteeth witch. The encounter rattles Celaena, and they leave quickly after the witch shouts a parting warning about fate.
The three drift over to the stables, where Dorian surprises Chaol with an Asterion stallion as an early birthday gift. When Dorian asks about Chaol’s birthday plans, Celaena jumps in to say she already has something arranged. The moment becomes awkward between Celaena and Dorian.
Afterward, Celaena slips away to the tomb on her own to test whether her amulet fits the eye‑shaped hole in the wall, planning to keep the whole thing from Nehemia.
Crown of Midnight Chapter 20
Celaena tries to use the Eye of Elena amulet on a hole in the tomb wall, convinced it holds the key to uncovering the king’s power. No matter how she angles or positions it, nothing happens. Mort mocks her and insists she still hasn’t asked the right question. She storms out in frustration.
That night, Celaena has a dream she’s had before. She’s standing at the edge of a bottomless ravine with a white stag watching from the opposite side. The stag inches closer as if inviting her to cross, but the gap only grows wider. She stays where she is, and eventually the stag turns and vanishes into the forest.
Celaena wakes before dawn, unsettled, and stands quietly in the dark with her dog Fleetfoot before leaving the castle early.
When Celaena skips training, Chaol goes looking for her and finds Nehemia in Celaena’s rooms instead. Nehemia explains that Celaena has taken the day for herself and has probably ridden as far from the city as she can, because the date marks ten years since her parents died.
