A Court of Mist and Fury Chapters 55–69 Summary

This Sarah J. Maas A Court of Mist and Fury chapter summary contains full spoilers.

A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 55

Feyre tells Rhysand she loves him and accepts him as her mate. He’s moved to tears, and they reconnect physically, moving from the painting table to the bedroom, then to the bath, and back to the bedroom again as the night unfolds.

In the quieter stretches between these moments, Feyre and Rhysand talk about when their feelings first took hold. Rhysand traces his feelings back to a moment when Feyre showed fearlessness and quick thinking during her first trial. Feyre admits she started to recognize her feelings on Starfall but was too frightened to acknowledge them honestly.

Before the night winds down, Rhysand tells Feyre they have to leave the following day because the queens have responded and will return in three days.

The next morning, Rhysand explains that the overwhelming pull he and Feyre are feeling is completely normal for newly mated pairs and warns Feyre that he may struggle to keep his composure around other males for a while. They briefly discuss the question of pregnancy and agree without much debate that they want to wait. Feyre puts it simply by saying she wants to live and travel and just be with Rhysand before thinking about any of that.

A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 56

Feyre and Rhysand arrive at the Illyrian camp, where Cassian wastes no time needling Rhysand about the mating bond. Rhysand snaps, and the two of them end up brawling in the mud for about an hour. Feyre realizes Cassian picked the fight on purpose to help Rhysand shake off the volatile edge he’d been carrying.

After Rhysand and Cassian finally wear each other out, Feyre and Rhysand share a private moment in the house. Then Feyre, Rhys, Cassian, and Mor winnow to Velaris.

At the House of Wind, the whole Inner Circle is already gathered for dinner. Mor, Azriel, Amren, and Cassian stand and bow to Feyre, formally pledging their loyalty to her. Feyre asks them to be her friends before anything else, and they agree to be both. Dinner is warm and easy, with everyone teasing one another back and forth.

Once dinner is over, everyone except Amren flies out across the dark water toward the mortal lands on the group’s way to reveal a long-guarded secret to the queens.

A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 57

The two queens return with their guards, and Rhysand and Feyre present themselves as a united couple. When the elder queen tries to pin the tension from their last meeting on Nesta, both Feyre and Nesta refuse to let the accusation stand.

Rhysand then asks Mor to use the Veritas, a truth-telling orb passed down through her bloodline, to show the queens Velaris. The vision depicts a city of art and peace that Rhysand has kept secret for five thousand years. The queens seem genuinely affected but still refuse to commit, saying they need time to consult with their companions.

Nesta steps forward and makes an emotional appeal. She argues that evacuation isn’t realistic and asks the queens plainly not to abandon the human lands. Cassian then tells Nesta directly that he would consider it a worthy end to die defending her people. As Nesta cries, Cassian wipes the tear from her face.

After the queens leave, Rhysand finds a box the golden queen left under her chair. The box contains the second half of the Book of Breathings and a note in which the golden queen says she believes Rhysand, instructs them to claim the Book was stolen, and warns that the sixth queen isn’t actually ill.

Rhysand gives Nesta and Elain the choice to stay or come to Velaris. Elain decides to stay, so Nesta stays too. Nesta then connects Feyre’s painted stars to the city she now knows exists.

A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 58

Feyre and her allies return to Velaris after retrieving the Book of Breathings, but Amren cannot decode it within two days. While Rhysand and Mor are away at the Court of Nightmares, Cassian takes Feyre to a symphony performance, and they walk home afterward.

On the bridge over the Sidra, Feyre senses something shift beneath the water, and she and Cassian look up to see an enormous force of winged creatures closing in from the sea, carrying Hybern soldiers with them. Cassian throws a magical shield over the city, but the creatures wear magic-repelling gauntlets and punch through it.

The Attor impales the golden-eyed mortal queen on a lamppost and announces that the mortal queens and Jurian arranged the attack. The queen dies within moments.

Feyre sends Cassian after the Attor and runs toward the town house, but Hybern’s soldiers have already taken over the streets. Feyre quickly understands that the soldiers are attempting to wipe the city out entirely. Across the river, Amren holds her ground against the invaders, wielding a dark power of her own.

Hearing screams from the Rainbow, the artists’ quarter, Feyre fights her way there instead of retreating. She draws the Sidra up into water-beasts that tear through Hybern’s soldiers in the streets, then drenches those who take to the air and freezes them so they fall and shatter on the cobblestones.

Feyre spots the Attor slipping away into the sky, grabs poisoned ash arrows from the ground, tells Rhysand through their bond that she’s exactly where she needs to be, and winnows up after the creature.

A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 59

Feyre tracks down the Attor as it flees toward the sea and winnows directly onto it, driving poisoned ash arrows through its wings to cripple it. The two go into free fall together above the city.

During the plunge, Feyre stabs the Attor three times with her dagger, dedicating each blow to Rhys, to Clare, and to herself. Just before they hit the cobblestones, Feyre winnows away and lets the Attor crash to its death.

Feyre slams hard into a nearby building wall and watches from the street as Rhys’s wave of darkness moves through the Rainbow district and clears out the last hidden soldiers. Rhysand then appears, kisses her, and calls her the Defender of the Rainbow. Feyre breaks down in his arms as the city mourns around them.

A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 60

After the attack, the group gathers in the early hours of the morning. Rhysand confirms that the wards are back up, but Cassian points out the bigger problem. Hybern knows where Velaris is, and nothing prevents them from coming back. Feyre adds that if everyone leaves for Hybern, the city will remain undefended. Amren volunteers to stay, and Azriel explains that the plan is to strike back once the group has rested.

Feyre finds Rhysand on the roof, where he’s blaming himself for what happened. She reassures him, and together they make peace with each other.

The next afternoon, Amren cracks open the Book of Breathings. To nullify the Cauldron, Feyre must physically touch it and speak a specific set of words. Amren warns the group not to combine both halves of the Book, because doing so would draw forces far older and more dangerous than anything the group has faced.

Cassian lays out the plan. Mor and Azriel will take the group to the Hybern coast, the team will fly into the castle while Rhysand waits at a safe distance, and Feyre will nullify the Cauldron. Once Feyre finishes, she contacts Rhysand through their bond, and Rhysand and Mor pull everyone out before Hybern can respond. Rhysand leaves the decision to Feyre, and she agrees to go.

Back at the town house, Rhysand tells Feyre that they’ll be sharing a room from now on and gives her his mother’s star sapphire ring. He explains that the ring was placed with the Weaver long ago as an unofficial test for whoever might become his mate.

Feyre decides not to wear the ring until after the mission, but she tells Rhysand that once the mission is complete, she wants everything. She wants the bond declared, a wedding, and a celebration with everyone in Velaris. Rhysand tells her he wants to go even one step further.

A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 61

The group meets in the foyer, armed and ready to infiltrate Hybern. Amren reminds them that the King of Hybern is ancient and warns them not to waste time. Rhysand says goodbye to Feyre, and both Cassian and Azriel vow to keep her safe. Mor grabs Feyre’s hand, and the two of them disappear.

Feyre, Cassian, and Azriel arrive in the air above a dark sea, and Cassian swoops in to catch Feyre before she panics. The three of them fly toward Hybern. The island feels ominous and still, with a crumbling bone-white castle clinging to the cliffs above the water. They land at a small sea door at the base of the cliffs, where Mor is already waiting with her sword drawn.

Azriel has cleared the guards ahead, so the group moves fast. Feyre can feel the Cauldron pulling her through the castle without needing to think about where to go. Cassian and Azriel handle any guards they encounter along the way while Feyre and Mor push deeper into the castle.

The group passes through an old dungeon and finds a stairwell leading farther down. Feyre points the group toward it. Cassian goes first, and once he signals that the way is safe, the others follow him into a round underground chamber. The Cauldron sits waiting on a dais in the middle of the room.

A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 62

Feyre and her companions make their way down to the chamber holding the Cauldron. Feyre approaches it and touches the rim, and a torrent of power washes through her. While holding the first half of the Book of Breathings, she makes contact with the Book and the Cauldron at the same time.

The Book urges Feyre to unite its two halves. Mor warns her not to, but Feyre does it anyway, reasoning that the halves are too weak apart to counter the Cauldron’s power. The moment she joins them, a huge wave of silent force tears through her. The spell Feyre came to speak slips out of reach as she gets lost in the current flowing between the Book and the Cauldron, and her nose starts bleeding. Azriel physically pulls her out of the current before she recovers enough to act.

Then footsteps echo from above. A brown-haired human man walks down the stairs, and Feyre recognizes Jurian by the distinctive color of his eyes.

A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 63

The group runs into Jurian, and Rhysand steps in to keep things from escalating. It quickly becomes clear that Jurian was never a real threat but a distraction, buying time for the King of Hybern to cast a spell that seals the group inside the castle and cuts off all their powers.

Things get worse when Jurian shoots Azriel through the chest with a poisoned ash bolt. With Azriel dying and no magic to fall back on, the group has no choice but to follow the King of Hybern upstairs to his throne room. Once there, the King of Hybern announces that someone has held up their end of a deal. Tamlin and Lucien appear.

A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 64

The King of Hybern corners Feyre and her companions in his throne room when Tamlin walks in. Tamlin has struck a deal with the king, trading passage through his lands for the king to hand Feyre back to him. The king also wants Rhysand dead and Rhysand’s allies exposed, which has been Jurian’s obsession for fifty years.

Tamlin orders Feyre to come home with him. She refuses. The king then tries to break the bond between Feyre and Rhysand so Tamlin can reclaim her as his bride. Feyre quietly talks herself free of the spell suppressing her magic, and when Tamlin lunges for her, she winnows out of his reach. Rhysand punches Tamlin to the ground.

When Tamlin gets up, he staggers and goes pale, and everyone in the room realizes that Feyre and Rhysand are mates. Tamlin’s fury turns on Rhys. Soldiers pour in through every entrance. Feyre tries to unleash her power on the king, but the spell suppressing her magic takes hold again. She threatens to destroy Tamlin and everything he loves if he takes her from her mate, and he dismisses her entirely.

Then the king makes his final move. Four of the five human queens enter the room, and their guards drag Feyre’s two sisters into the room, gagged and bound.

A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 65

The King of Hybern has Elain and Nesta brought into the hall in chains. He reveals that Jurian, now his ally, spent months persuading the mortal queens that the Night Court is the real threat. The queens are present to witness the Cauldron in action and to weigh the king’s offer of immortality.

Hybern then opens with a show of force, unleashing a blast of magic that knocks nearly everyone to the ground. Cassian’s wings are destroyed, and Azriel is left critically injured. The king warns that any movement will cost Azriel his life, which effectively paralyzes the group.

Elain is brought to the Cauldron first. Feyre begs the King of Hybern to stop, and even Tamlin protests that this isn’t what he agreed to, but neither of them can intervene. Elain is pushed under the water and surfaces transformed into a Fae, giving the mortal queens the proof they came for.

Then it’s Nesta’s turn. She fights every step of the way, and even as she’s forced under the water, she frees one arm and points a single finger at the King of Hybern in a direct promise of revenge. The king appears unsettled.

When Nesta surfaces, Feyre senses that her transformation is different from Elain’s, as though Nesta refused to go quietly and returned with something she took from the Cauldron itself. Nesta immediately pulls free, gathers Elain, and holds her as they both fall apart. In that moment, Lucien finally looks at Elain and realizes that she’s his mate.

A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 66

Nesta immediately denies Lucien’s declaration that Elain is his mate and physically shoves him. The King of Hybern takes advantage of the moment to tempt the queens into being Made, and the youngest queen steps forward eagerly.

Rhysand buys time by offering to bargain with the king. Feyre uses that opening to unleash a flash of her light power, disguising it as an emotional breakdown while secretly tearing through the king’s wards and leaving an escape route open for her companions.

Then Feyre throws herself into a performance, pretending to be disoriented and terrified as she backs toward Tamlin and begs him to protect her from Rhysand. She sends a silent plea to Rhysand through their blocked bond, hoping he understands what she’s doing. Mor and Cassian realize what’s happening and play along.

Feyre pushes the act further by dropping to her knees before the king and begging him to sever her mating bond with Rhys. Tamlin, fully taken in by the performance, demands that the king release Feyre’s sisters and break the bond. The king agrees. Despite Rhys’s desperate, repeated protests, the king breaks the bond, and the pain tears through both Feyre and Rhys.

A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 67

Feyre faints briefly, and when she comes to, Tamlin rips off her left glove to check for a tattoo. There isn’t one. Meanwhile, Mor pulls Rhysand away from the fight, and Rhysand crawls back to Cassian and Azriel, who are both badly wounded.

Through a silent look, Feyre lets Rhysand know the wards are down and tells him to take her sisters and leave. Mor moves immediately, shoving Lucien aside and grabbing Feyre’s sisters before winnowing them out. Rhysand grabs Cassian and Azriel and disappears without turning back toward Feyre.

The king is furious and demands to know who broke the wards and where Feyre’s sisters went. Feyre ignores the chaos and tells Tamlin to take her home. Then the king turns his attention to Feyre and demands the Book of Breathings, which he fully expected her to have. She tells him he was wrong.

As Tamlin’s magic gathers around Feyre and Tamlin to winnow them away, Feyre tells the king, Jurian, and the queens that she’ll light their pyres herself for what they did to her sisters. Then Feyre and Tamlin are gone.

A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 68

Rhysand and his badly injured companions arrive back at the town house, where Amren and Mor immediately work to keep Cassian and Azriel alive. Once the situation stabilizes, Mor fills in the gaps. Tamlin cut a deal with the King of Hybern to trap Feyre and drag her back to the Spring Court, but Ianthe betrayed Tamlin by tipping off the king about Feyre’s sisters. The king threw Elain and Nesta into the Cauldron and turned them immortal, which gave him the leverage to keep the Night Court powerless.

Feyre saw no good move left, so she faked breaking free from the mental hold Tamlin believed Rhysand had over her. She acted as though she wanted nothing to do with her friends and agreed to return to the Spring Court if the king released everyone. Feyre also asked the king to break her bond with Rhysand, but Rhysand explains that the king severed only their bargain and not the mating bond, which was beyond his power.

When Amren and Mor demand that Rhysand retrieve Feyre immediately, he refuses. Feyre entered enemy territory on purpose and will feed him information through their bond as a spy. Rhysand then reveals that the night before, he and Feyre found a priestess, and Feyre was formally sworn in as High Lady of the Night Court. She is not a consort or a wife but his complete equal. Rhysand tells his court to hold until the time is right.

A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 69

Tamlin brings Feyre back to the Spring Court, convinced he’s rescued her from Rhysand’s grip. Feyre plays the part of a shaken but grateful lover. What Tamlin doesn’t know is that the night before, Feyre secretly swore her vows to Rhysand and the Night Court. The bond between Feyre and Rhysand is very much alive.

Feyre then tells Tamlin that she broke free of Rhysand’s control on her own and asks to be included in plans to recover her sisters. Tamlin, moved and apologetic, agrees.

However, Lucien is a problem. He watches Feyre with open suspicion, and Feyre senses he’s not buying any of it. But Lucien is stuck since Elain is still in enemy hands, which means he can’t expose Feyre without consequences.

Tamlin apologizes for how he handled things before and promises a fresh start. It’s exactly the opening Feyre needed. As Tamlin walks her through the front doors of the manor, she’s exactly where she wants to be. She’s inside his court, she has his trust, and she’s ready to bring him down.
