Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she's struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Worse, she can't seem to move past the horrors of the war with Hybern and all she lost in it.

The one person who ignites her temper more than any other is Cassian, the battle-scarred warrior whose position in Rhysand and Feyre's Night Court keeps him constantly in Nesta's orbit. But her temper isn't the only thing Cassian ignites. The fire between them is undeniable, and only burns hotter as they are forced into close quarters with each other.

Meanwhile, the treacherous human queens who returned to the Continent during the last war have forged a dangerous new alliance, threatening the fragile peace that has settled over the realms. And the key to halting them might very well rely on Cassian and Nesta facing their haunting pasts.

Against the sweeping backdrop of a world seared by war and plagued with uncertainty, Nesta and Cassian battle monsters from within and without as they search for acceptance—and healing—in each other's arms.

A Court of Silver Flames Book Summary

This Sarah J. Maas A Court of Silver Flames book summary contains full spoilers for all 80 chapters and a prologue.

A Court of Silver Flames Prologue

Nesta is dragged to the Cauldron by the King of Hybern’s guards, knowing no one is coming for her. She catches a glimpse of Elain, already transformed and lying on the floor, and of Cassian, badly wounded but still trying to reach her. Before she goes under, Nesta locks eyes with the king and raises one finger at him, a silent promise that he’ll pay for this.

The transformation is agonizing. It burns through Nesta’s human blood and reshapes her bones like molten metal poured into a mold. But instead of surrendering to it, she fights back. Nesta tears into the Cauldron’s power with everything she has, ripping out pieces of it and forcing them into herself until the Cauldron bucks and recoils beneath her.

A Court of Silver Flames Part 1: Novice

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 1

Cassian shows up at Nesta’s shabby apartment early in the morning to escort her to Feyre’s new riverside home. Nesta makes him wait while she deals with a man whose name she can’t even remember and makes herself presentable. Once she’s ready, Nesta and Cassian head over together.

Nesta and Cassian arrive to find Feyre, Rhysand, and Amren gathered in a study. The mood turns hostile fast. Amren goes after Nesta about how she’s been living, Rhysand tries to flex his authority, and Feyre has to cut him and Nesta off before Feyre can get a word in. She tells Nesta she should’ve stepped in sooner and that things can’t continue the way they’ve been. When Nesta demands to know what exactly is supposed to change, Feyre defers to Cassian, who tells Nesta she’ll be coming with him to train.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 2

Feyre tells Nesta she’s being relocated to the House of Wind, where she’ll train with Cassian every morning and spend her afternoons working in the library.

Amren delivers the ultimatum, leaning on an obscure point of court law to establish that Nesta is technically still an official member of the Night Court. Amren explains that Nesta’s apartment has already been cleared out and that her options are limited to going along with the plan or returning to the human lands.

Nesta pushes back, but nobody budges. She accuses Feyre of ruining her life by pulling her into this world. Feyre tells her that Elain has agreed to everything.

When the others step out and the two sisters are finally alone, the conversation gets ugly quickly. Feyre points out the staggering amount Nesta spent gambling and drinking the night before. Nesta tells Feyre that she has no right to get rid of her apartment and her things. Feyre explains that the apartment building itself is being torn down and repurposed as housing for families still displaced by the war. She then walks out without resolving anything.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 3

Rhysand and Cassian meet in the study, where Rhysand tells Cassian that his work keeping the Illyrians in line was a test and that Cassian is now ready for more. Rhysand wants Cassian to train Nesta at the House of Wind and quietly investigate the human queens, who may be scheming again. Mor will fill Cassian in on the details.

When Cassian reaches the entry hall, Feyre is there with a silent, stiff-backed Nesta. Mor arrives earlier than expected from Vallahan, clearly bothered by something Mor won’t explain yet. She winnows Nesta and Cassian to a spot above the House of Wind, where Cassian catches Nesta mid-drop and flies her down to the veranda, since the wards prevent anyone from winnowing directly inside.

Cassian walks Nesta to her old room and tells her she needs to eat. Nesta says she isn’t hungry and won’t train. Cassian makes it clear that her only real alternative is returning to the human lands, which isn’t a workable option. He then lays out the plan. Nesta will rest for the day, then train at Windhaven in the morning and work in the library with a high priestess named Clotho in the afternoon. Nesta goes into her room, pulls the curtains shut, and gets into bed.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 4

Cassian meets Mor at a riverfront café, where she debriefs him on her failed mission to Vallahan. The king and queen refused to sign the new peace treaty, citing the human queens, whose army was never properly dissolved. Mor suspects that Vallahan wants another war as an opportunity to push into human territory and that Montesere and Rask likely share the same ambition.

Rhysand needs intelligence on what the human queens are planning, and he assigns the job to Cassian. Cassian and Mor agree that the best way in is through Vassa, the exiled human queen. Mor flags Lucien as unreliable. His closeness to Vassa and Jurian has compromised his objectivity, so Cassian will need to go directly to Vassa rather than work through Lucien.

Later that night, Nesta wakes up disoriented in the House of Wind. She stands at the window, caught in memories of childhood poverty and of a man named Tomas who had hurt her badly. Eventually, Nesta returns to bed.

Cassian is also awake. He hears Azriel come home in the early hours and can’t get back to sleep. Rhysand checks in telepathically, and Cassian confirms that Nesta has been asleep since she arrived at the House of Wind. Rhysand reminds Cassian that Nesta’s first lesson is tomorrow. Cassian lies in the dark, already dreading it.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 5

Nesta refuses to touch the breakfast set before her, and the standoff only breaks when Cassian brings up her father’s death, sending her shooting to her feet in fury. She eventually forces herself through the meal and heads for the door. Cassian stops her, and the two trade sharp words before Nesta warns him not to read anything romantic into their training arrangement. Cassian fires back that she’ll be the one coming to him, leaving Nesta rattled even as she tries to play it off on her way downstairs.

Mor arrives, and Cassian flies her and Nesta past the wards. Mor winnows the group to Windhaven and disappears as soon as they arrive. A warrior named Devlon meets Nesta and Cassian with open hostility toward Nesta, demanding that any weapon Nesta touches be buried afterward. Cassian argues with him but lets the matter drop when Devlon refuses to give ground.

Cassian walks Nesta to an empty training ring, but she drops onto a nearby rock and makes clear she’ll show up and do absolutely nothing else. Devlon and his men drift back over to watch. Cassian holds Nesta’s gaze, and for a moment, something close to pleading crosses his face, but Nesta doesn’t move. He finally turns away and starts his morning exercises alone while Nesta stays exactly where she is.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 6

Nesta spends the morning sitting outside while Cassian trains, doing nothing herself. When Mor shows up, she wastes no time telling Nesta that people like Nesta don’t deserve the patience and goodwill that someone like Cassian extends to them. Cassian wraps up his session and leaves with Mor and Nesta.

Back at the House of Wind, Cassian doesn’t say a word to Nesta. She eventually finds a note under her door telling her to go to the library at one. There, Nesta meets Clotho and gets put to work organizing books for the afternoon.

Nesta gets through her shift without incident and checks back in with Clotho at the end of it. Clotho thanks her, tells her to return tomorrow, and mentions that Feyre has said good things about Nesta. Nesta brushes it off and leaves.

That evening, Nesta eats dinner alone. The House refuses to give her wine and serves her water instead, so Nesta gets up and decides to find some herself.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 7

After a disastrous training session with Nesta, Cassian arrives at the Band of Exiles’ manor, sent by Rhysand to play diplomat. He’s caught off guard to find Eris already there. Eris reports that a unit of his soldiers has gone missing and that someone left strange human-like scents at the scene.

Vassa names Briallyn as the likely culprit, a human queen whom the Cauldron punished by turning her into a withered crone. Briallyn has despised Nesta ever since. Briallyn may be working with Koschei, an immortal sorcerer who held Vassa captive and is the Bone Carver’s older brother. Cassian realizes Koschei is probably orchestrating events from his lake in a bid to break free and seize power.

After the meeting, Eris pulls Cassian aside and admits he already knew Briallyn was behind the disappearances. He used the group discussion only to gauge how far her reach extended. He also reveals that Beron, his father, has secretly pledged his forces to Briallyn. The missing soldiers were the very ones who traveled with Beron to meet her. Eris believes she took them to secure leverage.

Eris then threatens to bring the matter to other courts, knowing they might hand Nesta over to secure Briallyn’s goodwill. Cassian has little choice but to agree to share information. Eris promises to keep him updated on Beron in return, then winnows away and leaves Cassian bound to an alliance he never wanted.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 8

Nesta tries to sneak down the House’s ten-thousand-step spiral staircase to reach the city and find a drink. But she only makes it about a hundred steps before dizziness and exhaustion overwhelm her. She turns back, and by the end, she’s dragging herself up the last stretch on her stomach. Cassian is waiting at the top and wastes no time making fun of her. But he tells her that if she’s sick of being that physically weak, training is there whenever she wants it.

The next morning, Nesta wakes up barely able to move and heads to the dining room early to avoid giving Cassian the satisfaction of watching her hobble in. He figures it out the moment he sees her. Azriel is with him, and Nesta tries to get under Cassian’s skin by saying she’d rather train with Azriel instead. Cassian agrees, which she wasn’t expecting. He then makes a remark with an obvious double meaning that catches her off guard. She walks out before he can see that it affected her.

Once Nesta is gone, Azriel warns Cassian that he’s heading into dangerous territory, and Cassian knows he’s right.

At the Illyrian camp, Nesta refuses to train. She sits on a rock in the cold for an hour while Cassian exercises alone. Afterward, her face is pale and her lips have turned an unhealthy shade. Cassian points her toward the nearby house to warm up by the fire while he deals with camp matters.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 9

Nesta stops into a small clothing shop in the Illyrian camp in search of something warmer than her fighting leathers. The shopkeeper, Emerie, is direct and unsentimental, and the two fall into an unusually honest conversation. When Nesta admits that she’s been cut off financially, Emerie brushes it off and offers to track down a price for her anyway. When Nesta introduces herself, Emerie confirms that she already knows who Nesta is and responds with plain approval.

Back at the House of Wind, Nesta checks in with Clotho and is sent to Level Five to shelve books. During a break, she crosses paths with Gwyn, a young acolyte who piles more books onto Nesta’s cart and tells her to get back to work. The two are blunt and a little combative, but they part on better terms than the exchange probably deserved.

When her shift ends, Nesta complains to Clotho about Gwyn. Clotho is unmoved and tells her that Gwyn has been through a great deal herself and that if Nesta had a problem with the way Gwyn treated her, she should’ve said so to Gwyn directly.

Nesta returns to her private library and, after some reluctance, asks the House for the soup it had been trying to give her all day. The House brings soup, bread, and water. She thanks it.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 10

Nesta is eating alone in the library when Cassian wanders in and helps himself to most of her cake, using the moment to nudge her toward training. Nesta refuses, and Cassian leaves.

That night, Nesta wakes from a nightmare tangled up in Elain’s kidnapping and her father’s death. Before she’s fully thought it through, she heads down the stairs toward town. She loses her footing after the sixty-sixth step and grabs blindly at the wall, pressing her hand into the stone hard enough to leave permanent furrows. The rock glows beneath her hand and goes dark when she pulls away. Shaken, Nesta sprints back up to her room.

The next morning, Cassian casually brings up Nesta’s fall on the stairs, admitting he knew she fell but didn’t step in because she caught herself. He tries again to get her into the training ring and even says please, which stops her short because she’s never heard him use that word. Nesta wants to get up and take his hand. But she can’t make herself move, and Cassian walks away without pushing further.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 11

Nesta tries to get into the private library. But the House refuses to let her in, seemingly in retaliation for skipping the meal the House left out earlier. Hungry and fed up, Nesta goes to the dining room, where Cassian and Azriel are already eating.

The meal is tense from the start. Azriel’s upcoming mission connected to Vassa comes up briefly before the conversation shifts to Nesta’s black eye and refusal to train. Azriel asks about Nesta’s fading black eye, and Cassian says she fell down the stairs. Things escalate quickly. Cassian tells her everyone hates her, she throws a cutting remark about his feelings for her, and he walks out. Nesta leaves shortly after and returns to the library to spend the night shelving books alone.

Later, Feyre finds Cassian sitting on top of the mountain after Rhysand sends her to check on him because he’d noticed something was off. They talk through what has been going on with Nesta, and Feyre fills in some of the history between the sisters. She reassures Cassian that Nesta doesn’t actually hate him, even if it looks that way. Cassian admits he’s at his wits’ end, and the two agree that library work alone won’t be enough to reach Nesta.

Cassian then glances down at the training ring below, and something clicks. He tells Feyre that he should’ve thought of it sooner and resolves to give Nesta one last chance.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 12

Cassian brings Nesta to the rooftop training ring at the House of Wind instead of Windhaven, since Mor is away and can’t transport them. When Nesta hesitates to train, Cassian offers her a bargain to get her moving. One hour of training in exchange for a favor of whatever size she wants. Nesta agrees, they shake on it, and magic seals the deal with matching tattoos appearing on both their spines.

The training itself turns out to be far more unglamorous than Nesta expected. Cassian walks her through basic footwork, balance drills, and breathing exercises, and she struggles through all of it. He guides Nesta without mocking her, and something about the rhythm of the breathing settles her in a way she didn’t expect. Nesta ends up staying for a second hour without any bargain attached.

When Nesta heads inside afterward, Cassian stops her to take back his comment from the night before about everyone hating her. Nesta insists it’s true, but Cassian tells her it isn’t, and she quietly admits she’s never hated him. Then Nesta goes inside and leaves him standing there.
