A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 41

Helion, High Lord of the Day Court, arrives on his prized black pegasus after Rhysand refuses his original plan of a golden chariot and four horses. Once inside, Rhysand and Feyre tell Helion about the pregnancy, partly because they need access to his libraries.

Then Helion examines the two captured Autumn Court soldiers and tells the group that whatever is controlling the soldiers’ minds feels less like a spell and more like a fog with nothing to grab onto or break. Feyre connects it to the Crown, one of the Dread Trove items, and the group concludes that Queen Briallyn has likely been using it to bend people to her will.

When Helion sees the Mask, he’s clearly unsettled by it. Feyre asks him to ward the room where it’s stored, and he ties the wards to Nesta’s blood. Afterward, Nesta refuses to learn the unlocking spell because she doesn’t want to carry that knowledge in case Briallyn ever captures her.

Rhysand then says he wants Nesta and Cassian to visit Eris the following day to address what happened to Eris’s soldiers. Azriel wants to send spies into the human lands to confirm that Briallyn has the Crown, but Feyre refuses and orders him to pull everyone out. He agrees, reluctantly.

That night, Cassian visits Nesta’s room with some books. She asks why he hasn’t returned since the first time they slept together, and they end up in bed again.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 42

Cassian is called to Rhysand’s office at dawn, where Rhysand shows him three weapons that a local blacksmith delivered in a panic. The blacksmith wanted nothing to do with them, convinced they were dangerous, and left them for the Inner Circle to deal with.

When Cassian mentions that Nesta hammered all three blades at the shop, Rhysand and Amren piece together what happened. Nesta’s power seeped into the hot metal and turned the weapons into something entirely new. Amren is alarmed enough to classify the weapons as a new Dread Trove and insists that the Inner Circle keep Nesta in the dark. Cassian and Azriel object, and Rhysand settles the argument by agreeing to let Feyre make the final call.

Shortly after Amren leaves, Rhysand admits to Cassian and Azriel that Feyre’s life is in serious danger. The baby’s Illyrian wings make a safe delivery nearly impossible. Every lead has gone nowhere, and Rhysand still hasn’t told Feyre how bad things really are.

Cassian then convinces Rhysand to use his magic to unsheathe the blades rather than touch them directly. The great sword practically hums with raw power, while the other two give off a sharp cold and a simmering heat. Amren returns, having expected Cassian, Rhys, and Azriel wouldn’t be able to resist, and mentions a rumor that Amarantha once destroyed an ancient magic sword called Narben rather than hand it over to the King of Hybern.

Amren then urges Rhysand to use the three blades to claim the title of High King and unite the courts. Rhysand refuses, and Amren warns him that the Cauldron’s patience has limits.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 43

Nesta and Cassian meet Eris in the Spring Court to deliver news about his soldiers. Cassian tells him that most of the soldiers were killed in the Bog of Oorid after Briallyn and Koschei enchanted them, with only two surviving.

Eris responds with cold contempt, implying Cassian didn’t try hard enough to spare the soldiers. Nesta cuts in and asks why Eris’s men were carrying banned ash arrows, suggesting he may have been stockpiling them for use against a High Lord and that he could even be playing all sides. Eris insists he isn’t their enemy. Cassian ends the exchange sincerely by offering to help the families of the soldiers who died.

Before Nesta and Cassian can leave, Tamlin shows up in his beast form. Nesta steps in front of Cassian and confronts Tamlin, telling him that his choices led to her and Elain being thrown into the Cauldron. She warns Tamlin to stay quiet about seeing them, and she and Cassian fly off.

That night Nesta can’t sleep and ends up at the library railing, where she notices something shifting in the dark pit below. Cassian finds her there, and she shrugs it off as shadows. They talk about the day, and Nesta tells him she didn’t appreciate how Eris treated him. Both Nesta and Cassian also agree that Tamlin never deserved Feyre.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 44

During training, Cassian notices the priestesses using Mind-Stilling breathing and reveals that he learned to recognize it from fighting alongside the Valkyries centuries ago. He tells them about the Battle of Meinir Pass, where most of the Valkyries died in a battle they always knew they wouldn’t survive. He adds that his superiors had restrained him to keep him from going to their aid.

When Nesta half-jokingly suggests merging Illyrian and Valkyrie fighting styles, Cassian takes the idea seriously and asks Gwyn to bring him Merrill’s manuscript on Valkyrie techniques so they can start building something new.

That evening at the river house, the group discusses what to do with the weapons Nesta forged. Everyone agrees Nesta deserves to know, and Cassian volunteers to be the one to tell her.

Elain then shares two stories about Nesta. At fourteen, Nesta deliberately charmed a visiting duke away from a cruel heiress who’d been tormenting Elain. Long before that, their mother had taken Nesta’s love of music and dance and shaped it into a social tool rather than something Nesta could enjoy for herself.

The stories stay with Cassian long after dinner. He realizes that training gives Nesta an outlet, but it won’t be enough, because Nesta needs music too.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 45

Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie are in a brutal training session with Cassian when he keeps nudging Nesta about what she’d name a sword. Nesta finds the question oddly specific but lets it go until they finish.

Afterward, Nesta corners Cassian and demands a real answer. He tells her that when she visited the blacksmith, she unknowingly poured the power of the Cauldron into three blades, two swords and a dagger, forging weapons with a kind of power that had been absent from the world for ages. She has essentially created a new Dread Trove.

Before that can sink in, Nesta catches something in Cassian’s phrasing. He says they still have no idea what the blades are capable of, and she zeroes in on the word “we.” Cassian admits that the Inner Circle knew and had held a vote on whether to tell her.

Nesta learns that Rhysand and Amren voted against telling her. Rhysand she expected. Amren is a different wound, because Nesta had quietly hoped that her relationship with Amren wasn’t completely lost.

Without a word, Nesta heads back to her room and shuts down completely. She runs the bath and waits Cassian out until he stops knocking and leaves. Then she slips out and makes her way down into Velaris alone.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 46

Nesta storms into Amren’s apartment and confronts her for voting against telling Nesta the truth about her own power. Varian leaves at Nesta’s insistence, and the two women argue bitterly about loyalty and betrayal. Amren had been the one person Nesta believed was truly in her corner, and learning that Amren voted against telling her the truth cuts deep.

Feyre arrives to break up the fight. Nesta turns on her and reveals what the Inner Circle has been hiding. The baby’s Illyrian wings would be too large to pass through Feyre’s Fae body during labor and would likely kill both Feyre and the baby. Rhysand has known for weeks without telling his own mate. Feyre is shattered. Amren confirms that the group kept the secret on purpose. Nesta sees the fear and love on Feyre’s face, realizes she’s gone too far, and runs.

Meanwhile, Cassian pieces together what led to the situation with Nesta. He had told Nesta everything rather than lie to her when she grew suspicious, then made things worse by giving her space instead of talking things through before she disappeared. He goes to the river house looking for her and finds Rhysand instead. Rhysand is eerily calm, but the fury underneath is unmistakable. He tells Cassian what Nesta has done and orders him to get her out of Velaris before Rhysand does something Rhysand cannot take back.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 47

Cassian spots Nesta running through the city and swoops down to grab her before she can get far, carrying her off into the sky. On the way out, Azriel intercepts them just long enough to pass along a packed bag, and then Cassian flies for hours until he and Nesta reach the mountains and set down for the night. Nesta doesn’t speak or fight him. She just curls up against the rock and goes to sleep.

Once Nesta is out, Feyre reaches Cassian telepathically. She tells him Rhysand has calmed down and acknowledged he went too far, and she wants both Nesta and Cassian to come back. Cassian says no, at least not yet. He tells Feyre that he and Nesta are going to stay out in the wilderness for a few days and that Nesta is going to hike whether she likes it or not. Feyre passes this along to Rhys, who’s annoyed in principle but privately pleased. They wrap up the conversation, and Cassian goes back to keeping watch over Nesta as she sleeps.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 48

Cassian wakes Nesta at dawn, hands her breakfast, and tells her they have a full day of hiking ahead. Because his wings make carrying a pack impossible, he hands the heavy canvas bag to Nesta, and they set off up the mountain.

The hike is brutal. Nesta struggles under the weight but keeps going without a word, pushing through the climb and then a punishing descent toward the river valley. At midday, they stop at the Gerthys River, where Nesta drinks deeply and collapses on the bank to rest. Cassian gives her thirty minutes before they push on.

The rest stop shakes Cassian. When he casually mentions the danger of falling off the mountain, he catches something in Nesta’s expression and understands that she isn’t afraid of that at all. She’s in a darker place than he realized.

Cassian lets Nesta rest, then leads her onward. Walking ahead of her through the peaks, he thinks back to something Mor once told him about that region being a place where people came long ago to heal after physical and emotional hardship. He wonders if some instinct brought him here for that reason, and whether the place will be enough to reach Nesta.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 49

Nesta and Cassian are making their way through a mountain range on foot. The first night, Cassian calls a halt at a rocky lookout and sets up camp while Nesta collapses on the ground, completely spent. She wakes in the dark to find food Cassian left for her.

The next two days pass in near silence. Nesta stops drinking water because every halt leaves her alone with her thoughts, something she’s desperate to avoid. By the third day, she faints on the trail. Cassian rushes to her side, gets water into her, and carries her the rest of the way to camp when she can’t manage the walk herself.

The following morning, Nesta and Cassian push on. Cassian mentions that they’re heading for a lake where they can rest for a day or two. When they finally reach it, a wave of grief and self-loathing hits Nesta so hard that she drops to her knees on the rocky shore and breaks down in tears.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 50

Nesta collapses by a mountain lake. When Cassian touches her shoulder, she asks him not to show her kindness, then confesses what she has been carrying. She says she let her father die, that he died while she hated him, and that she was cruel to him her whole life. She also admits that she can’t take back what she said to Feyre about the pregnancy and doesn’t know how to fix any of it or herself.

Cassian pulls Nesta into his lap and holds her. He tells her that her father’s death wasn’t her fault. Instead of listing his own failures, Cassian tells Nesta that she’ll get through it only if she fights for herself the way she fights for the people she loves. He also makes it clear that she doesn’t have to become someone softer or different and that the sharpness in her is something he values.

Nesta touches Cassian’s face. Cassian leans into her touch, and she thanks him.

Cassian then sits with what he’s learned. He realizes that Nesta has been hearing her father’s neck snap every time a fire crackles near her, and he pieces together moments when she was suffering without his knowing.

Nesta and Cassian stay by the lake until the moon rises. Then Cassian hands her his Illyrian blade and asks her to perform the eight-pointed star. She executes every movement perfectly. He tells her to perform the sequence again, and she begins with a smile he has never seen on her before.

A Court of Silver Flames Part 3: Valkyrie

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 51

Nesta returns from a week in the mountains with Cassian, and Emerie and Gwyn immediately notice that she can now handle a real sword. At training, Gwyn introduces an old Valkyrie test involving a hanging ribbon that must be sliced cleanly in half with a single stroke. Cassian invites the women to try. Emerie goes first and fails. Cassian then slices the ribbon in half without effort, which rankles Nesta.

After training, Nesta and Cassian fall into bed together, and that pattern carries on for several weeks. They keep things purely physical and always part ways afterward, neither willing to close the emotional distance between them. Meanwhile, Nesta repeatedly walks down the stairs toward the city intending to visit her sister Feyre, but she never makes it past the halfway point before turning back. The ribbon challenge also remains undefeated at every training session.

In the library, Nesta asks Gwyn if she can attend the priestesses’ evening music services. She opens up about the year after the war, when she drank constantly and slept with strangers as a form of self-punishment, and explains that music was the one thing that gave her peace. Gwyn listens without judgment, hints at a painful history of her own, and tells Nesta that she’ll always be welcome.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 52

Nesta attends a sunset service at an underground sanctuary and spots her friend Gwyn among the priestesses leading the ceremony.

As the singing begins, Nesta gets so caught up in the music that she slips into an involuntary scrying vision. She finds herself traveling through a dark mountain prison and into a hidden chamber beneath it, where a golden harp sits alone on the floor. The Harp speaks to Nesta, urging her to play it, but the song ends and pulls her out of the vision before she can reach the instrument.

Nesta had immediately found Cassian and told him what happened. Cassian then flies to Rhysand to pass along the news that the Harp is somewhere beneath a place called the Prison and that Nesta may have woken the instrument in the process.

Rhysand explains that he placed a magical shield around the Prison to stop Beron from releasing its inmates and that it will take him a full day to safely bring down the shield so Cassian can enter. Before Cassian leaves, Rhysand hands him a powerful sword that Nesta had previously made and tells him to bring the weapon on the mission.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 53

Nesta and Cassian enter the Prison to retrieve the Harp. Nesta leads Cassian through the dark tunnels until she spots the hidden chamber from her scrying. Ancient wards protect the chamber, so Nesta goes in alone while Cassian watches from the archway.

The moment Nesta picks up the Harp, it pulls her into a vision of Fae being sealed alive inside stone. Then she suddenly comes face to face with Briallyn, who’s wearing the Crown. Briallyn tells Nesta that she knows exactly where Nesta is and who her friends are. Meanwhile, the Harp’s magic pins Nesta to the ground, and she can barely move.

Nesta manages to reach the Harp mentally, bargaining with the instrument until it agrees to free her. She plucks one of the Harp’s strings, and the weight lifts. Nesta makes her way back to Cassian and fills him in on what happened, including the fact that Briallyn now knows her location.

As they head out of the Prison, Nesta tells Cassian she thinks of him as a friend. Cassian says he has always been her friend. Nesta starts to say something more, but Cassian shoves her behind him before she can finish. The door to Lanthys‘s cell is standing wide open.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapter 54

Cassian faces Lanthys’s open cell knowing the situation is dire. He buys time by taunting the creature while waiting for an opening to get Nesta out safely. Nesta pieces together that she accidentally freed Lanthys when she commanded the Harp to lift the wards around Lanthys, and that she may have unlocked the entire Prison in the process.

Moments later, Cassian lunges at Lanthys, throws Nesta his Siphon for light, and orders her to run. On her way to the gates, Nesta realizes that the Harp can move her through space, not just open doors. She then comes face to face with Autumn Court soldiers sent by Briallyn and Koschei, and she uses the Harp to jump back to Cassian instead of fleeing.

Nesta finds Cassian badly wounded and still fighting. Lanthys hurls Cassian into the wall, knocks him out, and flings Nesta aside. She gets up, stands over Cassian, and attacks Lanthys with Ataraxia. The blade shocks Lanthys into his physical form, and he begins to retreat. He tries to win Nesta over with visions of shared power and glory, but she sees through the manipulation. Once Lanthys moves close enough, Cassian throws a dagger into his chest, and Nesta decapitates him with Ataraxia.

With soldiers closing in, Nesta uses the Harp to transport herself and Cassian to Feyre’s house in Velaris, where Cassian collapses on the lawn.
