As her marriage to Tamlin approaches, Feyre's hollowness and nightmares consume her. She finds herself split into two different people: one who upholds her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the feared Night Court, and one who lives out her life in the Spring Court with Tamlin. While Feyre navigates a dark web of politics, passion, and dazzling power, a greater evil looms. She might just be the key to stopping it, but only if she can harness her harrowing gifts, heal her fractured soul, and decide how she wishes to shape her future-and the future of a world in turmoil.

A Court of Mist and Fury Prologue
Feyre has just killed a young High Fae prisoner. She stands over the body, bloody dagger in hand, while Amarantha watches from her throne and orders Feyre to keep going.
The guards bring forward another prisoner, a female Fae who kneels with her hood still up. Feyre takes the second dagger and prepares to strike again.
When the guards pull back the hood, Feyre sees herself transformed with Fae features, hollow and despairing. She grips the female prisoner by the shoulder and drives the dagger into the prisoner’s heart.
A Court of Mist and Fury Part 1: The House of Beasts
A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 1
Feyre wakes from a nightmare and makes it to the bathroom just in time to be sick. When the worst of it passes, she sits on the cold floor and reminds herself that she’s real and that she survived.
Three months have passed since everything happened Under the Mountain. Feyre notices the tattoo Rhysand left on her arm, a physical reminder of the deal she struck with him. She thinks about how carefully she’s avoided mentioning Rhysand to anyone since coming home.
Feyre goes back to bed, where Tamlin is still asleep. Feyre knows that Tamlin has his own nightmares, so the two of them have settled into never talking about what happened Under the Mountain.
A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 2
Feyre wants to ride out to a nearby village to help with rebuilding efforts, but Tamlin refuses, citing a shortage of sentries and safety concerns. She then learns that Lucien had hunted down five naga the previous day and had lied to Feyre’s face about why he was limping at dinner. Eventually, she pushes back without success and doesn’t watch Tamlin ride off with Lucien and the others.
Feyre spends the afternoon with Ianthe, a High Priestess who has largely taken over wedding planning. They work through seating arrangements and the realities of Fae court politics. Ianthe is polished and capable, and Feyre is mostly content to let her lead.
Ianthe keeps steering the conversation toward Lucien, clearly interested in him. Feyre carefully redirects Ianthe without getting into the real reasons Lucien wants nothing to do with the priestess. When Ianthe suggests covering Feyre’s tattoos with gloves for the wedding, Feyre deflects without committing.
That night, Tamlin comes to Feyre’s room, and they become intimate. Afterward, he apologizes for keeping Feyre from the village and assures her that things will settle once they’re married. Then Feyre asks what people will call her after the wedding. Tamlin tells her that there’s no such thing as a High Lady. Feyre will be the Lady of the Spring Court.
A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 3
Feyre rides out with Lucien to check on a nearby village that’s been rebuilding. Before they leave, she confronts Lucien about the naga attack that he’d kept from her. Lucien admits that Tamlin ordered him to stay quiet.
During the ride, Lucien urges Feyre to be patient with Tamlin, explaining that Tamlin’s controlling behavior stems from trauma and fear of losing her again. Lucien also briefs Feyre on the upcoming Tithe, a tradition where Spring Court members bring payment to Tamlin in exchange for his protection, and warns her that she’ll be expected to sit beside Tamlin while he deals with anyone who fails to pay.
At the village, every person Feyre and Lucien approach turns down their offer of help. On the ride home, Lucien admits that he took Feyre there knowing that would happen, hoping it would discourage her desire to get involved. He then reveals that, during Amarantha’s rule, the court’s people weren’t kept Under the Mountain. Instead, Amarantha crammed them into dark underground tunnels beneath it, where thousands lived without light or food for fifty years. Some went mad. Some preyed on others.
Feyre is left with a deep sense of helplessness.
A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 4
In the days before her wedding, Feyre gets pulled through an endless series of parties and social gatherings at Tamlin’s court, feeling disconnected and out of place the whole time. During one of those events, two of Tamlin’s guards bring up Rhysand, and Feyre firmly defends him, catching everyone off guard.
That night, Feyre has nightmares about her time Under the Mountain and wakes up shaking. She tries to convince herself that everything will settle once the wedding is behind her.
The ceremony starts without incident. Feyre walks down the aisle toward Tamlin, but the sight of red rose petals scattered among the white ones sends her spiraling. She freezes a few steps from the altar, overcome by trauma and a growing sense of being trapped, and can’t make herself move forward.
Right as everything threatens to unravel in front of the crowd, a thunderous crack splits the air, and Rhysand steps out of the darkness and into the middle of the ceremony.
A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 5
Rhysand, High Lord of the Night Court, crashes Feyre’s wedding to Tamlin and invokes the bargain she made with him, demanding that she leave with him immediately. Tamlin and his men reach for their weapons but stop when Rhysand’s power pins them in place. Feyre begs Tamlin to intervene, but he backs down after Rhysand promises to return her within a week. Rhysand then whisks Feyre away through darkness to his mountain palace in the Night Court.
When they arrive, Feyre demands to be sent home, but Rhysand refuses and assures her that she’s a guest, not a prisoner. He shows Feyre to a lavish room and tells her to rest. That night, alone, Feyre breaks down in tears.
The next morning, Nuala and Cerridwen, Feyre’s two handmaidens from Under the Mountain, wake Feyre and get her ready for breakfast with Rhysand. Rhysand uses his mental bond with Feyre to summon her to the table, and she finds his use of the bond infuriating.
Over the meal, Feyre and Rhysand discuss how the Night Court works and how Rhysand can hear Feyre’s thoughts. He tells her he intervened at the wedding because he heard her silent plea for help. When Feyre finally gets him to explain what he wants from her during the week, he tells her he wants to teach her how to read.
A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 6
As part of their bargain, Rhysand proposes lessons in reading and mental shielding. Feyre resists but privately concedes that they’re necessary skills. Her inability to read nearly cost her life Under the Mountain, and the prospect of Rhysand having open access to her mind is reason enough to agree.
Rhysand proposes lessons in reading and mental shielding. Feyre resists but privately concedes that they’re necessary skills. Her inability to read nearly cost her life Under the Mountain, and the prospect of Rhysand having open access to her mind is reason enough to agree.
Before the lesson begins, Rhysand’s cousin Morrigan arrives for breakfast. She’s warm, disarmingly funny, and takes an immediate liking to Feyre. The three eat together before Rhysand pulls Feyre away.
Rhysand gives Feyre a sentence to read. She works through it slowly, then realizes the sentence is flirtatious and absurd. Without warning, Rhysand slips into her mind and freezes her in place, exposing just how defenseless she is. He holds her there until she forces him out and raises a mental wall. He leaves her to practice for an hour and returns to find that her shields are holding.
Later, Rhysand brings Feyre to a tower room where a large map covers one wall. Feyre notices the world is divided by the wall separating human and fae lands. She asks whether that division will last. Rhysand tells her plainly that war is coming.
A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 7
Rhysand reveals that the King of Hybern has spent over a century planning to reclaim the human lands south of the Wall. He also explains that Amarantha’s reign was never really about her but instead served as a test for the king to determine how easily a territory could be controlled. Prythian is the only thing standing between Hybern and the continent, and the king’s endgame is to bring the Wall down.
Feyre then learns why Rhysand brought her to the Night Court. Rhysand wants her to act as a go-between with Tamlin because Tamlin’s ties to Hybern could prove useful. Rhysand also hopes she’ll help track something down, though he withholds the full picture. On top of that, he reveals that Feyre may have absorbed power from all seven High Lords when they resurrected her.
For the rest of the week, Feyre works on the mental shielding exercises Rhysand assigned. Near the end of her stay, she overhears Rhysand and Mor discussing a brutal attack on a temple in Cesere where attackers slaughtered priestesses and robbed the trove.
Back home, Tamlin is relieved to see Feyre, but the reunion is brief. He immediately sits her down with Lucien and asks her to report everything she witnessed in the Night Court. When Feyre brings up Hybern and the possibility that she has powers, Tamlin shuts the conversation down. Tamlin forbids her from training and insists there won’t be a war. Feyre argues with him but ultimately drops the subject, though his dismissal doesn’t sit right with her.
A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 8
Feyre and Tamlin get one day together before he’s called away to the border, leaving her to spend the week alone, fighting off nightmares and illness. He comes back just in time for the Tithe.
The event drags on for hours until a water-wraith steps forward and tells Tamlin there are no fish left in the wraith’s lake. Tamlin shows no sympathy and tells the wraith she has three days to pay what she owes or bring twice as much next time. Feyre slips away from the dais, catches up with the wraith outside, and hands over her own jewelry so the wraith can cover her debt and still have something left over.
At dinner, Tamlin confronts Feyre. Tamlin says what she did undermined his authority and made him look weak in front of his people. Feyre argues back, drawing on her own memories of going hungry as a child.
When Lucien tries to smooth things over, Tamlin turns on Lucien for it. Suddenly, Feyre feels something strange surge through her, and she briefly slips into Lucien’s mind, catching a flash of Lucien’s thoughts and emotions. She pulls back almost immediately and recognizes the power as Rhysand’s. She leaves the table without a word, shaken, hoping neither of them noticed what just happened.
A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 9
Feyre notices burn marks in her room and wonders if she caused them. She also questions whether she slipped into Lucien’s mind. Her handmaid Alis appears and tells her that the water-wraith Feyre gave her jewels to will always be grateful and that the faerie community will hear of Feyre’s kindness.
Unable to sleep, Feyre seeks out Tamlin in his study. They both apologize for their fight earlier and briefly smooth things over. Tamlin gives Feyre a traveling paint kit as a gesture of goodwill, but she finds it deeply unsettling rather than touching.
Tension returns when Feyre asks whether she can roam the grounds freely while she paints. Tamlin confirms she’ll still need an escort. Feyre says she feels trapped and controlled, and she begs him to involve her in his work instead of keeping her at a distance. Tamlin refuses. She points out that she’s stronger and harder to kill now, but he reminds her that his own family was strong and still died.
The argument escalates, and Feyre tells Tamlin to marry someone who can live that way. Tamlin asks quietly whether she even wants to marry him. She says she does, but his constant restrictions make her feel slowly suffocated. Tamlin then loses control, and his power tears through the room, destroying everything inside, including the paint kit he’d just given Feyre.
A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 10
Tamlin destroys the study in a fit of rage while Feyre throws herself to the floor. Without meaning to, Feyre conjures a magical shield that physically holds Tamlin back. Tamlin falls to his knees and begs forgiveness, promising to do better, and Feyre accepts his embrace even though she has no real answer to give him.
Life settles into a fragile quiet after that. Tamlin pulls back some of the guards, and Feyre fills her days reading in the library and secretly practicing her magic. She and Tamlin make an effort with each other, and for a stretch, things feel almost normal.
That changes when Rhysand turns up at the estate, having slipped through the wards without any apparent effort. Rhysand and Tamlin face off in the hallway while Feyre gets dressed, appearing in her Night Court clothes.
Then Tamlin shocks Feyre by offering Rhysand whatever he wants if Rhysand will free Feyre from their bargain. Rhysand turns him down, and he takes Feyre’s hand and pulls her away before she gets the chance to say another word.
A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 11
Feyre returns to the Night Court. Rhysand tells her to join him for breakfast, clearly worried despite his usual banter. He tells her he felt a wave of fear through their bond and wants to know what happened. Feyre admits it was a fight with Tamlin but refuses to elaborate.
Rhysand brings up his offer again, asking Feyre to join him against the coming threat, but she refuses. He tells her about the fifty years he spent as Amarantha’s captive and asks her to help ensure nothing like that ever happens again. Feyre doesn’t respond.
For the next few days, Feyre keeps to herself. She practices blocking Rhysand out mentally, and when he tests her shields, they hold. Rhysand leaves her a stack of books and goes off on business.
When Rhysand returns, he tries to make Feyre see that she’s falling apart, but she won’t engage. He uses his power to seal Feyre’s book shut and finally gets a reaction from her. Feyre hurls the book at him in anger. The moment passes quickly, but Rhysand is relieved to see any genuine emotion from her.
The following morning, Tamlin is waiting, and Feyre leaves with him. Immediately after, he has Feyre recount everything she saw and heard during her time with Rhys, and by the next day, her guards are back in full force.
A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 12
Feyre is stuck at the manor while Tamlin and Lucien are away handling an unnamed threat. When Lucien returns, he pulls her aside and quietly asks about the uncontrolled magic Feyre has been experiencing. He promises to urge Tamlin to let her train.
That night, Feyre overhears a heated argument among Tamlin, Lucien, and Ianthe. Ianthe warns that rival High Lords may come after Feyre because of the powers Feyre absorbed, and Lucien argues that Feyre needs to learn how to use them so she can protect herself. Tamlin insists that keeping Feyre’s abilities secret is safer.
The following day, Tamlin and Lucien prepare to leave for the western border. Feyre begs to go along and says she’ll follow if Tamlin refuses. Tamlin responds by sealing the manor with an invisible barrier that traps only Feyre inside, then walks away without looking back.
Alone, Feyre is overtaken by a suffocating sense of being imprisoned. She reaches for her magic, hoping to escape, but nothing comes. Then Mor appears, having knocked out the guards to get in. Mor carries Feyre out of the manor, through a cave passage, and into open air on the other side, where Rhysand is waiting. Rhysand uses his power to calm Feyre, and she falls asleep.
A Court of Mist and Fury Chapter 13
Feyre wakes up in the Night Court to find Rhysand sitting across from her. Rhysand fills her in on what happened at Tamlin’s manor. Apparently, she’d been screaming and had somehow unleashed a wave of darkness that sent the whole household back in the Spring Court into a panic, though no one was hurt.
Because Rhysand couldn’t set foot inside Tamlin’s territory without risking an inter-court war, Mor had to go in alone, knock out the sentries herself, and physically bring Feyre across the border before Rhysand could step in.
Rhysand tells Feyre she has no obligation to go back to the Spring Court. When Feyre admits she has nowhere else to turn, he offers her a place to stay and a role in his court. Feyre decides she isn’t going back, at least not yet.
When Rhysand gets up to leave on court business, Feyre asks to go with him rather than sit alone with her thoughts. Rhysand agrees but makes the terms clear first. Where they’re going is one of the Night Court’s most protected secrets, and Feyre can never breathe a word of it to anyone outside his court, including Tamlin. Feyre agrees.
Rhysand tells Feyre their destination is Velaris, the City of Starlight, and the two of them winnow there. They land inside a cozy, clearly well-loved townhouse somewhere in the middle of a city.
