The Traitor Queen Chapter 1

Aren spends thirteen days blindfolded and restrained while the Maridrinians haul him out of Ithicana. Throughout the ordeal, his thoughts keep circling back to Lara and whether what they shared was ever real. Only when they cross into Maridrinian territory do his captors finally remove the blindfold. 

The Traitor Queen Chapter 2

Lara is confined to a cell beneath Eranahl. When she tried to persuade Ahnna to help rescue Aren, the effort backfired, and she was arrested instead. Now the guards refuse to speak with her, and nobody will allow her to see Ahnna.

The Traitor Queen Chapter 3

As Aren’s blindfold comes off, he finds himself seated across from Silas Veliant, the Maridrinian king and Lara’s father. Aren lunges at Silas immediately, but a chain fastened to his waist yanks him back.

Silas tells Aren that Ithicana is finished and that his title carries no weight. He already knows about Eranahl and is certain it will fall. When Aren asks why he’s been brought there, Silas unsettles him by asking where Lara is. She never returned to Maridrina.

Then, Silas produces the document taken from Aren at the time of his capture, the one revealing Lara’s betrayal of both kingdoms, and demands to know where her loyalties lie. He also asks who killed Marylyn. Aren claims responsibility, but Silas doesn’t believe him. Silas argues that Lara killed her own sister solely to save Aren’s life.

Silas warns that he promised to kill Lara if she ever betrayed him, and he’s certain she’ll come for Aren now that she knows he’s a prisoner. Aren denies loving her and tells Silas he’ll hand him the sword himself. Silas laughs and walks away. Left alone in the garden, Aren silently tells Lara to run.

The Traitor Queen Chapter 4

Ahnna comes to Lara’s cell and gives her a chance to plead her case instead of handing her over to the city, which is demanding her execution.

Lara tells Ahnna everything about her childhood, her training under Serin, and how she was manipulated into betraying Ithicana without realizing her true enemy was her own father. Ahnna admits she knew Aren had released Lara, though she isn’t happy about it.

Then, Lara lays out her plan. Harendell is bleeding money because Maridrina’s alliance with Amarid gives Amarid preferential terms at Northwatch and on the bridge. That grievance can be exploited, but Harendell won’t risk war on goodwill alone. The only way to hold them to the Fifteen-Year Treaty is if Ahnna agrees to marry the Harendellian crown prince.

Ahnna doesn’t take that lightly. She’s never left Ithicana, and the weight of the decision shows. Still, she unlocks the cell and asks to hear the rest of the plan.

The Traitor Queen Chapter 5

Serin arrives with soldiers dragging a hooded, bloodied woman. Believing she’s Lara, Aren breaks down when Serin begins torturing her and gives up fragments of information about Eranahl’s defenses just to make it stop.

The woman wrenches free and pulls off the hood. It’s Emra, a young Ithicanian garrison commander who came to rescue Aren. She’s badly beaten and unable to speak, but the look she gives him is unmistakable. Aren snaps her neck before Serin can force anything more out of either of them.

Serin has Emra’s body strung up and tells Aren this was only the first rescue attempt. He’s about to bring out two more prisoners when a Maridrinian prince arrives with his own captive, Zarrah Anaphora, the empress’s niece. Zarrah breaks free from her guards and drops to her knees before Aren, apologizing for her role in Ithicana’s fall. The prince then moves on with Zarrah, and Serin shifts his focus back to Aren.

The Traitor Queen Chapter 6

Lara and Jor land on a Maridrinian beach. Jor wants to rescue Aren immediately, but Lara insists that her father will keep Aren alive as long as he believes Ahnna might surrender Eranahl to get him back. That surrender deadline is the real clock they’re working against.

Jor makes no effort to hide that he blames Lara for everything that happened to Ithicana. She doesn’t argue. She tells him she’ll return in a few weeks, and if she doesn’t, he can assume she’s dead. Then she turns toward Maridrina to search for her sisters, whom Marylyn had told her were still alive.

The Traitor Queen Chapter 7

Serin keeps Aren suspended by chains and questions him about Eranahl for days. Aren resists, but sleep deprivation wears him down until he blurts out one small, seemingly harmless detail. He tells himself it doesn’t matter, yet the anxiety follows him into sleep.

Aren jolts awake, convinced Lara is screaming, and shouts her name. But it’s only another of Serin’s mind games. Serin informs him that two Ithicanians were caught in the palace sewers overnight and invites Aren to watch what happens to them.

The Traitor Queen Chapter 8

Lara spends a week searching mountain villages for Sarhina and finally tracks her to a small hamlet. When Lara spots her sister, Sarhina is visibly pregnant and settled into a quiet life with her husband. Lara hesitates, suddenly unsure if she has any right to pull Sarhina back into danger just to fix her own mistakes.

Before Lara can decide, a blade presses against her throat, and a familiar voice calls her Marylyn.

The Traitor Queen Chapter 9

The blade at Lara’s throat belongs to Bronwyn. Sarhina and Cresta stand nearby. Lara disarms Bronwyn but steps back without striking, and the four sisters face each other for the first time in over a year.

Lara tells them she killed Marylyn to protect Aren and the rest of her sisters. She admits her feelings for Aren drove her to turn against their father, which is why he now wants her dead. Her sisters already know the truth about Ithicana and have no illusions about the role they were trained to play.

Sarhina cuts to the point and asks if Lara needs their help to reclaim Aren and her kingdom.

The Traitor Queen Chapter 10

The sisters gather at Sarhina’s cabin. Cresta and Sarhina tell Lara that when they woke, they searched through the dead for her before anyone thought to check their pockets for her note. They hold up their burn‑scarred palms as proof. Marylyn said little until they left the desert, then vanished. They only realized she had betrayed them when their father’s soldiers began hunting them down.

Lara tries to back out, saying it isn’t fair to drag them into danger to fix her mistakes. Her sisters refuse. They want their father to pay, and Lara’s warning that Serin knows how she thinks doesn’t sway them.

When Lara asks Sarhina to stay out of the fighting, Sarhina kicks her chair out from under her and makes clear she’s the one in charge. Lara agrees, and Sarhina tells Cresta and Bronwyn to pack.

The Traitor Queen Chapter 11

Aren is chained in a Maridrinian courtyard, surrounded by the bodies of eighteen Ithicanians who died trying to rescue him. Convinced that the only way to stop his people from dying on his behalf is to take his own life, Aren moves to act, but Prince Keris interrupts him and sits down across from him.

Keris reveals that he and Lara share the same mother, whom King Silas strangled after she tried to follow Lara when soldiers took her away. Keris asks Aren to stay alive, hinting that Aren is still useful in the longer game he’s playing against his father. Serin interrupts and sends Keris away.

Serin then has the body of Gorrick, one of Aren’s oldest friends, mounted on the garden wall. Aren notices that Keris left his bird book behind. The magpie entry reveals the harem wives gave Serin that nickname because he was the one who took their daughters. They’ve never forgiven him, which means they might help Aren.

Aren calls over a guard and accepts the king’s dinner invitation.

The Traitor Queen Chapter 12

Lara and Sarhina arrive at a rundown fishing village inn, where Marisol, a Maridrinian woman spying for Ithicana, works behind the bar. Marisol slaps Lara and holds her responsible for Ithicana’s fall, but after a brief standoff, she agrees to signal their contacts.

Jor and Lia arrive shortly after. Lia tells Lara that Gorrick, her lover and one of Aren’s oldest friends, grew tired of waiting and tried to break Aren out alone. He died in the attempt, and Lia blames Lara’s delays. Jor demands to know when Lara’s sisters will arrive. Lara admits she doesn’t have an answer.

Just as Lia announces she’s done waiting and turns to leave, she comes face-to-face with Athena. One by one, the rest of Lara’s sisters step out from hiding throughout the inn. Jor insists that rescuing Aren must take priority over settling scores with their father. Sarhina tells him they plan to do both.

The Traitor Queen Chapter 13

Aren is brought to dinner with King Silas, chained to his seat and placed beside Coralyn Veliant, one of the late king’s wives whom Silas inherited. Silas tries to publicly humiliate Aren, but Aren holds his own. 

Zarrah announces that Valcotta will boycott the bridge until Aren is freed, and Aren reinforces the point by noting that a bridge no one crosses earns no gold, which visibly rattles the Amaridian ambassador.

Coralyn slips a silver fork into Aren’s lap while one of the young wives dances to cover their conversation. Aren asks her to get word to someone who can stop his people from throwing their lives away on futile rescue attempts and gives her the address of an Ithicanian spy in the Sapphire Market. When Coralyn objects, Aren invokes his grandmother’s name, telling her to say that Amelie Yamure’s grandson sent her, hoping Coralyn will feel enough loyalty to act.

The Traitor Queen Chapter 14

Lara’s sisters slip into the back room of a jewelry shop run by an Ithicanian spy, joined by Jor, Lia, and Sarhina. Aren’s grandmother, Nana, arrives uninvited, makes her contempt for Lara clear, and argues that her firsthand knowledge of the palace makes her indispensable to the plan.

The group tries to find a way inside, but every option they consider falls apart. Servants are too loyal or too afraid. Guards won’t take bribes. Infiltrating directly means going in blind.

Then a harem wife arrives at the front of the shop with a six-guard escort, and the group assumes the worst. They move toward a rooftop trapdoor to escape. But the wife tells the jeweler to pass a message to the Ithicanians that she’s hiding that Amelie Yamure’s grandson sent her.

The Traitor Queen Chapter 15

Coralyn enters and recognizes Sarhina, then curtsies to Lara, who waves it off. Coralyn and Nana know each other from the harem decades earlier. Nana had vanished without a word, and Coralyn slaps her for it before they embrace.

Afterward, Coralyn tells the group that Aren is physically unharmed for now, since Silas is still using him as a bargaining chip. But Serin has been forcing him to watch captured Ithicanians rot in the palace gardens, and it’s taking a toll.

Lara demands help getting Aren out. Coralyn warns that getting in is manageable but getting out is another matter, and Nana backs her up from personal experience, having spent a full year trapped in the harem. Sarhina urges Coralyn to help with the entry at least, and Coralyn agrees, saying the younger wives will help because Silas and Serin wronged their children too.

With a way in taking shape, Lara says she has an idea for the way out.
