Throne of Glass Chapters 45–55 Summary

Throne of Glass Chapter 45
During training, Celaena pulls Nox aside and warns him that the Champions aren’t dying by accident. She lets him work out who she really is, and once he does, she tells him that he has nothing to lose by leaving and everything to lose by staying. He takes her advice and disappears from the castle that night.
Kaltain crosses paths with Cain in the hallway while she’s under the influence of opium. For a moment, she sees shadowy winged things hovering around him, then the vision fades, and she moves on.
That evening, Celaena plays chess with Dorian. When he leans in to kiss her, she deflects by bringing up his father, but eventually kisses him herself, more to stop thinking about Cain than anything else. They spend hours together before he finally leaves.
Once she’s alone in the early hours of the morning, Celaena can’t sleep. She stays awake waiting for whatever Cain might send after her, and eventually drifts off long enough to dream about being chased through the woods by something on horseback. She wakes at dawn, shaken but alive.
When word spreads that Nox has gone, the final Test is called off. Celaena will duel Grave, Renault, and Cain the next day, with her fate hanging on the outcome.
Throne of Glass Chapter 46
Dorian rides out to hunt in the frozen forest, but he can’t clear his head. He keeps thinking about Celaena and how he feels about her, even though he has no real sense of whether she feels anything in return. He comes across a stag, draws his bow, and lets the moment pass without shooting. With her duel tomorrow, Celaena is all he can think about as he rides on.
Late at night, Celaena stands at the balcony window, looking out over Rifthold. She turned away everyone who came to her door, including Chaol and Dorian. Her fight with Cain is the next day, and she’s thinking through what she knows about him. He’s stronger and has more stamina, but she’s quicker, so her best chance is to keep moving and hope her training with Chaol was enough to outlast Cain.
Celaena’s thoughts then turn darker. Winning means becoming the King’s Champion and killing on command, with no say in it, and she wonders if losing might actually be better. She thinks back to who she was when she left Endovier and recognizes how much has changed. She’s come to care about people in the castle and about the life she’s built, and it’s no longer just about earning her freedom. That’s what makes the duel feel so much heavier than it did before.
Throne of Glass Chapter 47
Kaltain waits outside for the duels to begin. While Duke Perrington briefly blocks her from view, she slips poison into Celaena’s goblet of wine, hoping to weaken her before the fight.
The Champions are brought out, and the king lays down the rules. There will be two preliminary duels, and the winners will face each other in a final bout to decide who becomes the King’s Champion.
Cain goes first against Renault the mercenary. It’s over in under three minutes. Cain beats him badly and holds his sword to Renault’s heart to claim the win.
Before Celaena’s duel, Chaol offers her his own sword. Then Nehemia steps forward with her staff instead, asking Celaena to let an Eyllwe weapon beat Adarlan steel. Celaena takes it, understanding that Nehemia wants her to use the position of King’s Champion to undermine the king from within.
Celaena thanks Chaol for making her freedom mean something. He holds her hand for a moment, then she walks into the ring to face Grave.
Throne of Glass Chapter 48
Celaena takes down Grave in the first duel in under two minutes. Before the second duel begins, Kaltain hands her a goblet laced with bloodbane, a drug that causes disorientation and hallucinations. Celaena drinks it without suspecting a thing.
Without time to rest, Celaena goes straight into the ring against Cain. She holds her own briefly, but the drug kicks in fast and she starts losing her footing and her strength. Cain already knows about the bloodbane, and he uses her weakened state to take control of the fight. Celaena realizes what’s happened but has no way out.
Cain dismantles Celaena physically. He breaks her staff, dislocates her shoulder, cuts her thigh, and slams her into the clock tower more than once. Between blows, he taunts her with details about her parents’ deaths that he should have no way of knowing, and the words shake her as badly as the beatings do.
Celaena ends up on the ground near the edge of the ring. Chaol kneels at the boundary and tells her to get up. She forces herself to her feet, but Cain shoves her straight into the clock tower again.
The bloodbane fully takes over. Celaena can no longer tell what’s real and sees demonic creatures swarming her. In the chaos, Cain rips the Eye of Elena from her neck. Visions of the dead overwhelm Celaena.
Throne of Glass Chapter 49
Celaena hallucinates mid-fight, thrashing on the ground while Cain beats her. Dorian and Chaol watch from the sidelines, helpless, since stepping in could cost her the match. Nearby, Nehemia drifts to the edge of the ring and begins making strange gestures with her hands.
In the hallucination, Celaena is surrounded by demons and the dead, with a shadowy version of Cain bearing down on her. She cries out, and Elena suddenly appears, scattering the dead and wrapping Celaena in protective light. Elena tells her she can’t share her strength, but she can draw the poison out, and she begins to do just that.
Cain breaks through Elena’s defenses and taunts Celaena, hinting that everyone at the competition was brought there on purpose as part of some larger, unfinished plan. Elena holds Cain off long enough for the poison to clear. She tells Celaena to stand, then vanishes.
Back in reality, Cain closes in on Celaena. Celaena grabs a broken piece of staff off the ground and, battered as she is, forces herself to her feet.
Throne of Glass Chapter 50
Celaena defeats Cain by driving a broken staff into his side and forcing him to the ground at knifepoint. The king announces Celaena as the victor and names her his Champion. She collapses from her injuries almost immediately, and Dorian rushes to her side.
What follows catches almost everyone off guard. Cain draws a dagger to stab Celaena from behind while she’s down, and Chaol is the only one who sees it in time. He kills Cain to save her, then stands in shock, staring at his bloodied hands, unable to process what he’s just done.
Dorian holds Celaena while she slowly comes back to herself. Despite the council watching their every move, he kisses her hair and stays close. Privately, he decides he’ll fight for her freedom no matter what it costs him.
On the other side of the courtyard, Kaltain goes straight to Duke Perrington and demands to know why the poison she gave Celaena didn’t work. Perrington immediately turns the situation against her, playing innocent in front of the council and the king, and has her arrested on the spot.
As Kaltain is dragged away screaming, neither the duke nor the king acknowledges her. She realizes she was used as a scapegoat from the beginning and that there was never any plan to protect her.
Throne of Glass Chapter 51
Dorian confronts his father, arguing that Chaol deserves no punishment for killing Cain, since Chaol defended Celaena against a dishonorable attack. The king agrees.
Afterward, Dorian challenges his father’s low opinion of Celaena, but in doing so reveals how much she means to him. The king now has a new way to control his son.
Before leaving, Dorian brings up Duke Perrington’s plan to use Nehemia as a hostage to suppress the Eyllwe rebels. He argues that it would backfire and spark a full rebellion and that winning Nehemia over would be far more effective. The king agrees to call off Perrington.
The next day, Celaena wakes badly bruised and barely able to move. Nehemia visits and comes clean. She’s understood the common tongue all along and kept it hidden as a precaution and a way to gather information people wouldn’t share openly. She also reveals she knows the Wyrdmarks and spent months secretly using them to banish the demons Cain summoned. The protective symbols Celaena found under her bed were Nehemia’s.
At the duel, Nehemia used the Wyrdmarks to open a portal and bring Elena through to save Celaena. Nehemia also admits she came to Rifthold to spy on the king for Eyllwe. The two part warmly, and Nehemia returns Elena’s amulet before she leaves.
Throne of Glass Chapter 52
Dorian visits Celaena while she’s still recovering from the duel. He admits that sleep has escaped him ever since it ended, and he apologizes for standing by while Cain hurt her instead of stepping in sooner. Celaena talks him down, and they end up resting together in her bed. Dorian tells her he had faith in her from the moment they met, and then he kisses her.
Meanwhile, the king weighs whether to formally name Celaena his Champion. Her relationships with Dorian and Nehemia make him uneasy, but with Cain gone, she’s the only real candidate he has. The king is also troubled by a strange mark he noticed on her and wants to understand it before committing to anything.
Finally, the king questions Duke Perrington about how he handled Kaltain. It comes out that she was essentially used to test what their obsidian rings could do. The king agrees to eventually pull her out of the dungeons once the situation cools down, and he tells Perrington to back off his plans around Nehemia before they attract unwanted attention.
Throne of Glass Chapter 53
Celaena is recovering from injuries she sustained in a duel a week earlier when Chaol shows up at her door unexpectedly. She thanks him for saving her life and for killing Cain, and Chaol admits that what haunts him isn’t the act itself but how easily and willingly he did it. She opens up briefly about the night her parents were murdered.
The conversation grows heavy, and Celaena pulls Chaol into an embrace, which he resists at first before holding her in return. Dorian walks in on them, and Chaol pulls away and leaves without much explanation.
Dorian brings news that the king has finalized Celaena’s contract and she’ll sign it the next day. He tries to resume their romantic involvement, but she stops him. She tells him that serving as the king’s Champion makes things too complicated and that when her four years of service are up, she’ll be free in a way she’s never experienced. Dorian accepts it, and they agree to stay friends, then he leaves.
Celaena stands alone at the window, turning the word free over in her mind.
Throne of Glass Chapter 54
Chaol goes looking for Dorian but can’t find him, so he ends up at Celaena’s dining room. She tells him she’s already ended things with Dorian, figuring a relationship with a prince doesn’t exactly fit her new role as King’s Champion.
The tension between Celaena and Chaol eases into something warmer, and they share a meal and a toast.
Later, Celaena dreams of the tomb and finds Elena waiting for her. Elena tells her she has far more potential than she realizes and that people are counting on her, Nehemia among them. She says Celaena’s position close to the king will matter more than Celaena understands now.
Before Elena disappears, Celaena thanks her for saving her life, and Elena hints that their bond runs deeper.
Throne of Glass Chapter 55
Celaena is brought before the king and his council to formally sign her contract as his royal Champion. The king confirms the terms Dorian originally negotiated, which promise four years of loyal service in exchange for her freedom.
Before Celaena puts her name to the page, the king pulls her aside and makes one thing very clear. If she fails a mission or disappears without returning, he’ll have Chaol executed. If she still doesn’t come back after that, Nehemia and her brothers will follow, and then their mother.
With no real way out, Celaena signs. The king dismisses her without ceremony, and she walks out of the chamber with Chaol at her side.
