Kissed by the Gods Chapter 64
Leina and Vaeloria are mid-battle against the Kher’zenn. Leina loses blood fast from a wound on her arm and swaps her scythe for her daggers before she loses her grip entirely. Vaeloria climbs in a tight spiral through the Veil, folds her wings at the peak, and they drop straight down before shooting out the other side in a flat horizontal run right through the Kher’zenn rearguard. Nobody on the ground sees them coming. Vaeloria carves through eight draegoths on the pass while Leina throws her daggers one by one into the others.
The Kher’zenn start pulling together for a counterattack, and Leina checks their front line, which is barely holding. The Elder catches her eye and waves her over. She and Vaeloria slip back into the Veil and emerge in the space between Ryot and the Elder. The Elder looks satisfied, as if everything is going exactly the way he expected. Ryot looks ready to explode.
Kissed by the Gods Chapter 65
Ryot fights in the middle of a desperate battle alongside thirteen men, their beasts, and Leina, who was supposed to have already left for safety. Leina suffers from a serious arm wound, so Ryot tosses her aldersigh to treat it. True to form, she treats her faravar before herself.
The enemy hits hard, nearly overwhelming Ryot and Einarr. A soldier named Drennek intervenes, touches Ryot’s shoulder, and channels a power called fire-giving into him. The surge pulls Ryot back from the edge and restores his strength.
The Elder gives a surprising order. Instead of forcing the Kher’zenn into open air as they normally would, he tells Leina and Vaeloria to push them into the storm. Aruveth calls it madness, but the Elder doesn’t waver, and Leina agrees without hesitation.
Before Leina rides out, Ryot tells her she’s made him whole. She smiles, says they aren’t finished yet, and she and Vaeloria disappear into the sky.
Kissed by the Gods Chapter 66
The plan to drive the Kher’zenn back through quick Veil raids falls apart fast. The Kher’zenn are too disciplined, adjusting their tactics on the fly and using their whips to cut off Leina and Vaeloria’s path. They refuse to be pushed around.
Vaeloria’s offhand comment about predators not being herded flips the plan. If the Kher’zenn won’t respond to pressure, they’ll respond to weakness. Leina and Vaeloria slip back into the Veil behind them, and Vaeloria performs a struggling, faltering flight. Blood already pours from her wings, and Leina’s genuine fear for her makes the act convincing enough.
The Kher’zenn abandon discipline the moment they see it. They strike hard, driven by pure instinct at the sight of weakened, stumbling targets. Leina and Vaeloria wheel toward the storm as if in a panic, and Leina admits the panic isn’t entirely manufactured. She’s badly wounded, half-blinded by blood, and losing her grip on the Veil. She isn’t sure whether Vaeloria’s stumbling is part of the act or real.
The Kher’zenn follow Leina and Vaeloria straight into the storm, eager because it’s where they hold the advantage. As Leina and Vaeloria breach its edge with the Kher’zenn closing in, Leina makes it clear this was the plan all along. They were never the hunted. They were the trap.
Kissed by the Gods Chapter 67
The battle has completely broken down. The Kher’zenn push through the defenses and flood into Amarune, cutting down civilians in the streets. Caius holds the line below, fighting to protect the people sheltering behind him, but a draegoth strikes from behind and drives a spear through his side. He falls from his mount and doesn’t get up.
Faelon drops after Caius but can’t reach him in time, and grief turns instantly to fury as he throws himself into protecting the survivors Caius was shielding, firing arrows faster than seems possible.
Elsewhere, Thalric and Oryndel are surrounded above a temple square, both badly wounded, holding off a tightening circle of Kher’zenn while covering a family sheltering behind the columns. Nyrica breaks from Ryot’s line without a word and heads for Thalric. Ryot tries to push the shield far enough to reach Thalric but falls just short.
Then Leina and Vaeloria come into view, both bleeding. A shredwhip opens a wound across Vaeloria’s leg, and Ryot makes the call in an instant, sending the shield toward Leina. Thalric falls under a wave of wings and blades.
Kissed by the Gods Chapter 68
Badly wounded, Leina and Vaeloria lose ground to the Kher’zenn, who close in fast enough that capture feels inevitable. A magical shield suddenly flares around them, giving just enough of a window to slip through the Veil and escape.
Leina and Vaeloria come out beneath the storm, where Leina finds the Elder and his faravar Sigurd in the thick of battle. The Elder calls down lightning on the Kher’zenn in wave after wave, tearing through dozens and killing the enemy commander. The Kher’zenn keep pushing forward anyway, and the effort of sustaining that much power starts to wear the Elder down.
The Elder fights through the strain and unleashes one final, devastating burst that destroys what remains of the enemy force. The cost is immediate. Sigurd’s wings fail, and the Elder goes limp against his neck. The two of them drop toward the ocean.
Leina and Vaeloria dive to intercept, nearly reaching the Elder and Sigurd in time, but the Veil tears open and pulls Leina back at the last second. The Elder falls beyond her reach.
Kissed by the Gods Chapter 69
The Veil ejects Leina and Vaeloria somewhere unfamiliar, far from the battle and Amarune. They land on a small volcanic island surrounded by ocean, barren down to the rock with lava crawling down its far side. The ash-covered ground is soft and punched through with enormous predator tracks, each one large enough for a person to curl up inside.
Leina is running on empty. As she drops to her knees, she catches a vision through the Veil of a second Kher’zenn formation bearing down on Amarune, twice the size of the first wave, and knows the city won’t hold. Vaeloria is already panicking, but not because of the Kher’zenn. She isn’t even looking at them.
Turning, Leina sees a figure standing in—or maybe hovering above—the ash. The figure has no face, but whatever passes for her gaze cuts straight through Leina. She calls her “Strider,” and the Veil closes around Leina and Vaeloria, pulling them back in.
Kissed by the Gods Chapter 70
Einarr and Ryot stay behind to search the sky for Leina and Vaeloria after they vanish through the Veil. The rest of the Altor have already gone back to Amarune to look for survivors, so it’s just the two of them patrolling the stretch of sky between the fortress and the ocean. Eventually, the air shimmers and Leina and Vaeloria fall through, both out cold. Einarr dives after them.
Kissed by the Gods Chapter 71
The battle is over, but the cost is staggering. Thousands of civilians are dead, Caius and the Elder among them, and Thalric clings to life while Nyrica races to stitch him back together. Ryot spends the aftermath holding a blade to a healer’s throat, refusing to let the man abandon Leina, who returned from the Veil barely alive.
Leina does wake, but only long enough to deliver bad news. She coughs up black ash and manages to warn the group that the Kher’zenn are coming again, in even greater numbers, before she passes out a second time.
The group knows they won’t survive another assault. Nyrica suggests pushing into the Peaks, where the cold would stop the draegoths from following. Aruveth points out that the climb alone would kill the civilians. Ryot breaks the deadlock by proposing they move through the adamas mines instead, and Aruveth agrees.
Before the group leaves, Faelon wades into the ocean and releases Caius’s body to the sea, then rejoins them without a word. Ryot settles Leina and Vaeloria together under Einarr’s protection and turns his attention to preparing for the evacuation.
Kissed by the Gods Chapter 72
Leina wakes disoriented in the Mines of Faraengard with Ryot beside her. He tells her Vaeloria is safe, but the Elder and Caius are gone. The news guts her.
Ryot carries Leina through the tunnels as she struggles with her grief. Nearing an exit, she feels a strange pull drawing her the opposite way and insists they follow it. They find an abandoned stope turned into a training room, and while exploring, they come face to face with King Agis. Leina moves to kill him immediately, but Ryot blocks her. He then reveals that Agis is his father. The revelation leaves Leina feeling used and betrayed.
Leina goes for the king again, stepping through the Veil to slip past Ryot’s shield. A hooded man intercepts her and knocks her scythe aside. Agis orders his men to kill Leina and spares Ryot before walking off. Ryot places himself between Leina and the hooded man.
Then the man drops his weapon. Leina realizes the pull that led her there had nothing to do with the king. The man pulls back his hood, and she recognizes him as someone she believed long dead. She whispers his name: Alden.
