House of Sky and Breath Prologue

Sofie Renast spends two weeks undercover in the Kavalla death camp searching for her younger brother Emile. When she finally finds him, she cuts through the electrified fence that night. Then she leads Emile and eleven other starving children out of the camp to a van driven by her rebel ally, Agent Silverbow.

Silver rushes the group to the port city of Servast, where a rebel ship called the Bodegraven waits. Imperial soldiers close in just as they reach the docks. Sofie sends Silver and the children ahead to the ship and stays behind to hold off the dreadwolves. She lures them into a flooded market square and uses her thunderbird power to electrocute them in the water, then sprints for the ship.

The Hind, a feared imperial spy-hunter named Lidia Cervos, waits with a sniper who shoots Sofie in the leg before she can reach the gangway. Sofie collapses on the dock as the Bodegraven pulls away. She unleashes all her power to destroy the imperial submarines closing in and helps the ship escape.

Sofie is captured and taken out to sea by the Hind, who demands to know which person she shared stolen intelligence with. Sofie insists she didn’t tell anyone. The Hind believes her and decides the information will die with her. She orders Sofie thrown overboard in chains, and Sofie drowns.

House of Sky and Breath Chapter 1

Bryce Quinlan attends the Crescent City Ballet with her parents, Ember Quinlan and Randall Silago, to watch her friend Juniper Andromeda perform. While they wait in the lobby, Ember asks Bryce about her job at the Fae Archives and her relationship with Hunt Athalar. Randall steps in a couple of times to keep the conversation from boiling over, but Bryce eventually shuts it down herself.

Hunt arrives late to their private box, delayed by a work case. A satyr brings over complimentary champagne from Juniper, and Hunt drops a test pill into Bryce’s glass to check for poison before letting her drink. Once they’re seated, Ember takes another jab at Bryce about Hunt, who brushes it off with easy confidence.

As the lights dim and the orchestra settles in, the star mark on Bryce’s chest suddenly blazes with light. The crowd stares, the Fae nobility across the theater sneer, and Bryce rises to leave. Hunt covers the mark with his hand to contain the glow, cracks a joke to ease the tension, and the moment passes. The conductor steps onto the stage, the curtain lifts, and Bryce settles in to watch Juniper dance.

House of Sky and Breath Chapter 2

Bryce and Hunt arrive at what Ruhn Danaan promised would be a small get-together, only to find the entire Old Square has shown up. They catch up with Ruhn, Tristan Flynn, Declan Emmett, and Declan’s new boyfriend, Marc, before finding Juniper and Fury Axtar in the living room.

Later that night, Bryce tells Hunt she keeps catching herself enjoying things and then feeling guilty about it, as though she doesn’t deserve to after everything that happened in the spring. Hunt understands and says people need nights like this to recover and find some normalcy again.

The conversation takes a sharper turn when Hunt receives an email from Isaiah Tiberian with news that two new Archangels have been named to replace Micah and Sandriel. 

The one that worries everyone is Celestina. She has spent her entire career overseeing a tiny, sparsely populated territory with almost no real authority, so her sudden appointment to Valbara, one of the most strategically important regions, doesn’t sit right with Hunt. His gut tells him the Asteri are installing a figurehead so they can push Valbaran troops into the worsening war in Pangera without resistance.

Hunt is scheduled to meet Celestina the following evening. Bryce tells him to go in with an open mind, skip the intimidation act, and aim for what she calls an “Approachable Asshole” vibe instead.

House of Sky and Breath Chapter 3

Ruhn is in his bedroom, hooking up with a faun he met at the party, when Flynn bursts in and tells him to come downstairs and bring his sword. Declan’s security system has detected unusual energy moving around the perimeter of the house. Ruhn heads down and spots Bryce and Hunt near the living room archway, both armed and alert.

The front doors fill with swirling shadows, and a figure walks into the foyer. Ruhn quickly realizes it isn’t a portal to Hel but recognizes the shadows as familiar. He also notices the scar on Bryce’s chest glowing. A golden-haired Fae male steps out of the darkness, and Ruhn knows whatever comes next won’t be good.

House of Sky and Breath Chapter 4

Prince Cormac of the Avallen Fae crashes Ruhn’s party and wastes no time making his purpose known. The Autumn King and the Avallen High King have arranged his engagement to Bryce, and Cormac has come in person to confirm she actually has her Starborn power. Bryce refuses him outright. Ruhn orders him to leave, and Cormac disappears back into his shadows with a parting promise that he’ll see Bryce at their wedding.

Once the party empties, Bryce shifts into damage-control mode. She wants her parents out of the city before word of the engagement spreads, and Marc puts his law firm to work digging through Fae legal precedent for any way to fight it.

Outside, Bryce and Hunt try to figure out what the Autumn King is really after. They agree the engagement is probably just the first piece of a longer play and that it may have been timed deliberately to coincide with the new Archangel Celestina’s arrival. They head home still turning it over, and when they reach their apartment, they find the door open and smell blood. Hunt draws his weapon, but no threat waits inside. Instead, they find Ithan Holstrom bleeding out on their floor.

House of Sky and Breath Chapter 5

Tharion Ketos, a mer captain under the River Queen‘s command, sails a stormy stretch of the Haldren Sea in search of a dead rebel spy. The River Queen sent him after her water-connected senses pointed to the general area where Sofie had been submerged with lead weights by the Hind.

After hours of combing the seafloor with a remote submersible, Tharion finds the weights. The chains are still attached, but Sofie is gone, and the restraints were deliberately released rather than forced open.

Tharion reports back to the River Queen, who concludes Sofie is probably still alive. She reminds him that Sofie already broke her brother Emile out of Kavalla, so she’s most likely trying to find him again. The River Queen wants both Sofie and Emile, pointing out that Emile carries the same rare ability as his sister, which makes him just as valuable to capture.

House of Sky and Breath Chapter 6

Bryce patches up Ithan after finding him badly beaten, with broken ribs, a broken arm, and facial wounds. He tells her that a pack member named Perry Ravenscroft brought him to the apartment and explains what led to the beating. 

A reporter had published an article in which Ithan defended Bryce and criticized Sabine Fendyr, and Sabine responded by having the pack beat him and throw him out. Bryce insists Ithan stay the night, then slips away to call her parents and convince them to leave the city before news of her betrothal spreads.

Bryce and Hunt argue over the sleeping arrangement when she decides to put Ithan in her room. Hunt takes his own bed alone, annoyed and jealous, though he trusts her completely. He pulls up the article on his phone, reads what Sabine said about Bryce, and struggles to keep his temper. A message from Isaiah reminds him to behave when Celestina arrives the following evening. 

Meanwhile, Bryce and Ithan talk in the dark. Ithan mentions that Danika Fendyr had given him access to the apartment before she died, which is how he got in. Bryce explains that Danika served as her Anchor during the Drop and that Connor Holstrom and the Pack of Devils held off Reapers to make it possible. Ithan reveals that Connor, his brother, had considered Bryce his true mate. When Bryce asks why he quit sunball, Ithan shuts down. 

House of Sky and Breath Chapter 7

Ruhn confronts his father, the Autumn King, in the middle of the night over the arranged marriages he has brokered. Cormac is present. Ruhn argues against forcing Bryce into anything, but his father shuts him down.

Cormac hints that Ruhn doesn’t know the full picture about his betrothed Hypaxia Enador. The Autumn King fills Ruhn in. Hypaxia is a necromancer, and her half-sister is the Hind. Ruhn takes it in stride, but his father makes clear the marriages are moving forward regardless.

Ruhn continues to object to marrying Bryce off to Cormac, pointing out that she’s with Hunt and that standing between them would be a serious mistake. His father dismisses this, noting that Bryce hasn’t fully bonded with Athalar.

The Autumn King then states his position plainly. He wants Bryce’s Starborn power passed down through her children with Cormac and sees the union as a way to strengthen ties ahead of an oncoming war. Ruhn argues for other options but gets nowhere.

Cormac taunts Ruhn before walking out. The Autumn King delivers the final blow. Ruhn’s failure to understand why any of this is necessary proves he was never the son his father wanted. Cormac is the son the Autumn King wishes he’d had instead.

House of Sky and Breath Chapter 8

Hunt is in the kitchen, steeling himself for a big day, when Bryce wanders in and offers to join him for the appointment of Lunathion’s new Governor. He turns her down but is genuinely touched. They talk about Ithan, and Bryce says she has no intention of handing him over to Sabine. Ithan, who has appeared in the doorway, is relieved.

The three share coffee, and Bryce and Ithan swap a fond, bittersweet memory of Danika. Once Bryce heads off to shower, Hunt warns Ithan that bringing trouble into their home will have consequences. Ithan takes it in stride and turns it around on Hunt, noting that Connor spent five years trying to get a date with Bryce and barely managed it. Hunt is only at month five.

Later, Bryce works in her subterranean office at the Fae Archives, still mourning Lehabah, the fire sprite who died protecting her. She calls her former employer Jesiba about authenticating an artifact. But the conversation shifts when Jesiba reveals she already knows about Bryce’s arranged engagement to Cormac Donnall. Jesiba suspects Bryce’s father set it up to control Bryce and urges her to weigh the political angles before refusing outright. Bryce listens, says little, and hangs up without tipping her hand.

House of Sky and Breath Chapter 9

Bryce is at work when Hunt calls with no news on the new Governor’s delayed arrival. She ends their conversation abruptly when her scar starts glowing, a sign that Cormac is nearby.

Cormac tells Bryce the glow means their union is predestined, backed by an Oracle’s prophecy, and that she’s expected to marry him, have his children, and move to Avallen. Bryce wants no part of it. She makes clear the Fae are no people of hers and shuts the door in his face.

Later, Hunt meets the new Governor alongside Naomi Boreas and Isaiah. Celestina sets a completely different tone from Micah right away. She asks to be called by her first name, views the triarii as partners rather than subordinates, and tells Isaiah she doesn’t consider him a slave. Hunt stays skeptical the whole time, convinced it could all be performance.

Then Celestina mentions that Sandriel’s former triarii will be joining their depleted ranks. Before the news can settle, the door opens, and Pollux Antonius, known as the Hammer, and the Helhound Baxian Argos walk in. Their arrival unsettles everyone in the room.

House of Sky and Breath Chapter 10

Hunt sees Pollux among the new arrivals and immediately jumps him.

Back at Bryce’s apartment, Ithan deals with the aftermath of his beating. He tries shifting into wolf form, but the reality of being packless hits hard, and he shifts back. Perry, the only member of his former pack who bothers to check on him, texts asking if he’s alive. Ithan replies with a simple yes. He decides to take things one step at a time, and when he offers Syrinx a walk, the chimera holds out for a belly rub instead.

Bryce shows up at the Comitium and finds Hunt roughed up in his cell. She then goes to Pollux and trades barbs with him until he lunges for her throat. She hits him with her power, and he backs off.

Baxian stops by long enough to say he’s glad someone killed Micah, then leaves without further explanation. Celestina has been watching through the intercom the whole time and tells Bryce that Hunt is free to go.

Bryce and Hunt leave together while Pollux stays behind bars.

House of Sky and Breath Chapter 11

Tharion digs through Sofie’s email account and finds a mysterious exchange with a sender called BansheeFan56. The emails mention something called Dusk’s Truth and a project named Thurr, and one message points her toward a secure hiding place in Lunathion. When Tharion traces the sender, he discovers it was Danika Fendyr.

Then, a field report arrives about an abandoned boat in the Nelthian Marshes carrying a life vest from the Bodegraven, the ship Emile had been on. Tharion heads out to investigate. The boat shows signs that a young boy had been staying there, and in the reeds nearby, he finds a severed arm belonging to an Ophion rebel from their elite Lightfall unit, killed by one of the sobeks that nest in the marshes. The discovery tells him the rebels had already sent people after Emile.

A map left on the boat has the marshes marked along with a second location near Crescent City. Tharion pieces it together and figures Emile ditched the boat and made for the city on foot. He sends officers to pick up the trail but tells them to hang back and watch rather than move in, hoping the boy will eventually lead them to Sofie.

House of Sky and Breath Chapter 12

Bryce and Hunt are in a park eating ice cream when Hunt confesses that Sandriel forced him to sabotage rebel mech-suits during the war, an act that cost many human soldiers their lives. They discuss the threat Pollux and Baxian now represent, and Bryce asks Hunt to keep his temper in check going forward. As they leave, a Reaper glides off the river and drifts past them through the city, unsettling them both.

Tharion spots Bryce and Hunt and pulls up on his wave skimmer. Back at Bryce’s apartment, he explains that the River Queen has assigned him to find Sofie Renast and her brother Emile, both of whom carry thunderbird powers despite passing as human. Sofie broke Emile out of the Kavalla death camp but was captured by the Hind in the process. Emile escaped and is believed to be heading toward Lunathion, while Sofie’s fate remains uncertain. Tharion also reveals emails linking Danika to Sofie, suggesting Danika had offered her a safe place to hide in the city.

Hunt warns that rebel involvement could get him and Bryce executed, given the Asteri’s direct order to lie low.

Ruhn arrives and joins the discussion. Tharion later hands Bryce copies of the emails before leaving. Bryce announces her intent to find Emile regardless.

Hunt retreats to the shower, rattled by how closely the situation mirrors his past with the rebellion. Later, Flynn and Declan show up uninvited, and everyone shares pizza. Hunt then confirms he’s staying in Bryce’s room while Ithan takes the couch.

House of Sky and Breath Chapter 13

Bryce has a rough night sleeping beside Hunt and wakes to a call from her mother, who has already heard about the fake engagement to Prince Cormac. The conversation turns ugly. Bryce loses her temper, tells her mother to stay out of it, and Ember hangs up.

Hunt then asks why Bryce never mentioned that Cormac had shown up at the archives. The exchange is tense, but neither pushes too far. They agree to talk things through properly before making any moves to find Emile.

Bryce meets Fury at a tea bar in the Old Square and lays out everything, including Sofie Renast, Emile, the River Queen’s mission, Ophion’s hunt for him, and the cryptic references to Project Thurr and Dusk’s Truth buried in Danika’s old emails.

What Fury tells her catches Bryce off guard. Danika was a bloodhound, someone who could scent a person’s true bloodline up close. Fury had known for years but stayed quiet during the murder investigation because it seemed irrelevant. Bryce begins to wonder whether Sofie knew about this gift and whether it was the reason the two women were ever in contact.

Bryce tells Fury that finding Emile was never only about helping a kid in danger. She wants the full truth about what Danika was caught up in before she died.
